CHAPTER SEVEN: TURN OF EVENTS.

The next day, Lucian walked into the event with Anthony and two bodyguards by his side. The crowd bristled with a feeling of unfamiliarity, there was no sign of Betty anyway. He sighed and brought out his phone to type a message.

"Where the hell are you?"

A reply came almost immediately. "What the heck are you implying? You should be begging me to keep you waiting, don't you think?"

He typed. "I'll leave in the next minute if you're not careful with your words. Afterall you need my services, don't you?"

"The audacity…" an audible voice sounded in his ears and when he turned around, Betty stood beside him, a wild look on her face, dressed as usual like a model.

"Ah, here she goes, don't you think it's unwise and ugly to be this grumpy?" Lucian smirked.

"The tables belonging to the dignitaries, especially that of the president of Howards, I want them sparkling clean," she snapped, a little bit surprised at the expensive clothes that he wore.

"Text me when you're done. I'll pay the day after tomorrow." She smacked and walked past him without giving him a chance to say a word.

Lucian picked up the towel from one of the tables and began to clean casually while noting the celebrities and reporters that had stormed the event.

"Master Lucian, it's an hour behind schedule, people are beginning to panic about your whereabouts. Will you continue to clean?" Anthony frowned.

In response, Lucian took out his mobile phone and was surprised at the number of messages he got from people who were anxiously looking for him. He sighed, set the phone on do not disturb mode and continued cleaning.

"You don't have to worry, Mr Anthony, I've got this under control." He tried to hide his smirk as he saw Betty in a corner fidgeting and looking panicked.

Sweat broke out on the back of her neck and tickled inside her blouse. Like every other person, she was anxious about the president and whether or not he would honor the invitation.

Many dignitaries attended this business event just to meet with the new president. If anything fell through, then she'd take the blame.

She could not afford for that to happen.

"Gather up any news about the president immediately!" She yelled to one of her employees.

"And you over there, will you stop nosing around and try to pacify the guests!"

"Yes, ma." The two men scurried away.

Lucian observed the crowd, everyone seemed to be on a hot seat, and some dignitaries had begun to confront Betty. The view was ridiculous. The president was right here in the hall and no one knew?

He turned to Anthony. "Mr Anthony, please give my number to the organizer of this event, and…"

He could not complete his statement when a rude voice yelled at him.

"You worthless piece of shit, how dare you slack around when you're supposed to do your job!"

It was Betty, her face was a mask of anger. He looked at her and allowed himself a half smile.

"Why don't you take it easy on yourself," he smirked.

"Do you think this is some foolish joke? You have no idea how to run a business, that's why you mop and clean all day long!"

"Is that so? He chuckled dryly. "Why can't you trust that I'll do a good job?"

Betty scoffed. "Why the hell will I have to trust you, I'll rather put my trust in a butterfly. If the new president arrives at this event now and sees an ordinary man like you joking around, I'll make sure he makes your life miserable. Do you have the slightest idea of how much I have invested into this event?!"

"And you're taking the credit for that, I guess!" He snorted, trying to ignore his disgust for her.

"Stop kidding with me!" She screamed, picked up his phone from one of the tables, and tossed it into the trash can behind her.

"This is the last piece of warning, idiot, respect yourself, hurry up to do your job, or else I'll punish you!"

She strode off, the heels of her shoes making a loud connection with the ground.

"The audacity…" Lucian muttered, passing a look at his phone in the trash can. Could Betty not ever learn to be human? Well, he would teach her.

The way she had blatantly refused to pay for his sister's bills even when she had the money played in his mind like a nightmare. It made his eyes blaze with a fury he could not describe.

He scoffed darkly, his hate for her could fill a drum.

At that moment, Betty walked up to the stage wearing the best smile. She clutched a paper in her hands as she took the mic. For a brief moment, she looked so nice, perfect, like she was not capable of hurting a fly when Indeed she was a beast.

"Ladies and gentlemen," she began. "Please settle down and put your worries aside because I've got the solution to all out problems,"

Silence breathed over the crowd, as each waited for what she had to say.

"I'm glad to announce that I have the private number of the new president of Howards. I'm going to call him right here and now to listen to what he has to say," She beamed.

Excited murmurs swept the hall and reporters thronged forward with their cameras.

Betty pressed a few buttons on her phone and put the phone on speaker. There was a pause, then the ringtone rang from the phone in the back of the room.

All eyes turned to the direction of the ring and when it was discovered, a shocked whisper escaped from Betty.

The phone was ringing from the trash can.

Betty gasped loudly, how could the phone that she tossed into the trashcan a few minutes ago be the mobile phone of the president?

Wait, how was Lucian connected to all of this…?

Her heart skipped a thousand beats in one brief moment. "This cannot be happening." She muttered under her breath.
