CHAPTER THREE: DIVORCE.

"How about you ask the useless man you married!" Summer spat in disgust.

"What the hell did you do to my mum, you lowly piece of shit?!" Betty yelled.

Lucian walked past her to the kitchen to wash off the sting from his eyes. When he returned, he stared at her, heat flushing through him.

"First, you ignore my calls, next, you flirt with this man that cost me my job and now you stand there unremorseful, questioning me? Betty, why are you allowing your wealth to get into your head! Tell me why you're doing this?!"

"Because I hate you!" She screamed. "The only thing I regret in my life is getting married to a scumbag like you. I regret our marriage!"

"What..?" Lucian chuckled dryly. "But we loved each other way before you inherited your father's company that brought you this far. I've always loved you, hoping that maybe one day, our marriage would work,"

"Well, I grew up, save your love for the trenches, Lucian, I'm done! Your stupid love cannot pay my bills or buy me expensive things that John here gets for me,"

"And my sister? How about the money you promised,"

"Your sister can die for all I care…!"

Lucian staggered backwards, a blinding pain twisting the insides of his chest. The way she said those words like it were nothing tugged at him that he flinched in disgust. He regretted the day he set his eyes on her.

Betty brushed past him to the drawer and brought out stack of papers which she tossed on the center table. "Those are divorce papers, sign them! I'm done with you!"

"What?" Lucian said, but the words came out like a whisper.

"I want a divorce, Lucian, do you want me to scream for the entire neighborhood to hear?"

Lucian blinked. "Have you never loved me? Was our entire marriage fake to you…?"

Betty chuckled at the expression on his face. "Oh, poor Lucian, so you couldn't read the room after all these years,"

She smirked. "The only reason why I got married to you was because all my age mates were getting married at that period. I thought I could manage you even when you were poor, but no, your poverty disgusted me from our first week of marriage. I've realized my worth!"

"But…but I tried my best, I did all I could to make you happy and this is what I get?" Lucian couldn't believe his ears. Was this Betty's true colors? Was this how shabby she thought of him?

"Your best is never good enough, your best is always foolish, so despicable, annoying. Your best only gave me a miserable life"

Lucian laughed, a dry bitter laugh. "Why am I getting to know all of this now? Are you choosing to ignore my sister because you hate me?"

"Lucian, I need a real man, an ambitious man who can meet up to my standards and dreams. A pathetic loser like you is a shame to me,"

"Oh, now I'm a shame? How about explaining this heartless behavior of yours?" He snorted in disbelief.

"Please save your stupid questions for your foolish sister in the hospital and go ahead to sign the fucking papers? I already signed my part a long time ago just so you know that I have no regrets for my actions,"

"Gosh, sometimes I wonder if you're not only useless, but deaf as well. Can't you hear that she isn't interested in you? Stop being so clingy!" John raged.

"Stay the hell away from this!" Lucian countered, passing John a furious look.

"You need some beating? I bet you'd love to see your sister sooner in the afterlife!" John said marching towards Lucian in anger.

"I'm warning you to stay away from this!"

"Sign the divorce papers this instant and free my daughter from your cage!" Summer barked in authority.

Lucian swallowed painfully and with a brief nod he picked up the pen and signed his own part of the papers. His heart was heavy as Betty stood there staring at him without affection.

There was a sting in his eyes as he finished signing. Anger flushed through him so much that he clenched his teeth. "You will regret this, Betty, I promise you,"

"No, I won't." She sneered. "You're in my past now, but once in a while, I might call you if I need cleaning services,"

"And my sister? How about we set our differences aside and help save her life?"

"No." Betty cut him short. "I don't have a dime on me. I spent my cash to get a Camry for my expensive babe here," she said, caressing John's hair.

"Neither do I have any cash for you, it's such a pity." John said, the sarcasm in his voice thick.

"Well I suppose you should let her die since you cannot take care of her. It'll be better that way with less mouths to feed, don't you think?" Summer laughed.

"Y'all will regret this..," Lucian said, water forming in his eyes.

"Oh, lest I forget, I'll throw your clothes out on the streets when I have the chance, so you can come back later for them"

John winked evily. "Goodbye Mr potty head. Don't bother going to work tomorrow or the day after or forever, you're fired!"

It was not their Indifferent attitude towards him that made his heart bled, it was the insensitivity towards saving a life that made his heart shatter in thousand tiny pieces. It made him wonder how Betty had lost her sense of sympathy, how she could throw away two years of their marriage as if it were nothing.

He sought for answers, none came, instead Betty's voice reached out to him.

"Bye, Lucian, close the door behind you." She said before locking her mouth with John and leading him to the bedroom.

A beep in his phone distracted him and he peered into the screen of his phone to find a message.

His heart made a painful lurch as he read the text out in a near whisper.

"Hi, Mr Lucian, your sister's surgery was successful. Please come to the hospital immediately to get the results."

"What?" Lucian muttered, dashing out of the room.
