PRESIDENTIAL VILLA
Adrian closed his eyes and sighed heavily. He knew that his death was close by. He opened them slowly and stared hard at the Japanese painting on his wall. It was one of the most beautiful and famous paintings in the world and was very rare. There were only four paintings like it in the world but only three had ever been found. No one knew what happened to the fourth one. The three paintings were shared between him, and his two old friends, John and Adam. It had been years since he really spoke to any of them. They separated in order to protect the next heir of the Knight Consortium and had only communicated once in a while to exchange important information.
The next heir was supposed to be John’s grandson. He remembered the promise he made back then to his two close friends back at high school. They all took one of the paintings as a symbol of their friendship and loyalty to one another.
High school was one dreadful experience. He didn't really want to remember it but he also had fun sometimes. Adam was the strongest of the three of them and learned faster than anyone in the school. John was the quiet one. He rarely talks and he specialized in making herbal essences. He was the one among them with leadership qualities, which was why he had ventured into politics and now he was the President of the country. But what use was his position when he had recently lost his two friends and he was close to death himself.
Though, there were days Adrian wished he had gifts like John who was blessed with the gift of using nature to cure basically any sickness on earth. Like the day his mother died. If he was gifted with the power of speed, he would have brought John sooner and maybe she would have made it. Even when his father brought in another woman immediately after his mother died, he would have struck both of them with volts of electricity and probably he wouldn't have had to suffer the way he did for the next five years before he moved out of the house. But all that was in the past.
What was more important was the present and the future. With John and Adam gone, it was up to him to prepare the way for the next medical god of the knight consortium. He tried to stand up but his legs failed him. He turned to his bedside and pulled out a card. He had kept the card for years, waiting patiently for the day it would glow. The card was given to him by John, Adam also had one while John had the Heir’s ring so he didn’t need a card. The ring was supposed to glow when the knight consortium came of age and was ready to take his place and the cards would also glow when that happened. So many years gone and nothing had happened. He wondered what the delay was. John used to be the Knight’s Consortium’s medical god but he gave up his power in order to save his grandson from assassins after they killed his own son. Had all their sacrifices been for nothing?
The Knight Consortium Medical god was the most important position in the whole of history. When John stepped down and the whole magic pillars fell out of balance because it was not yet his time to step down. Each magic pillar held an essential part of the Universe’s essence and only the medical god could wield or control all of them and keep the balance. That was why they all sacrificed a lot to save the next heir and to ensure that he was ready and also strong enough to be able to take the position. Because if the position fell into the wrong hands, mankind was doomed. The ring would glow when the next heir was ready. But that wasn't going to happen anytime soon and the sickness already took its toll on him. He was like a vegetable and couldn't move around without the help of his daughter, Malessa. He tried back to hold his tears. How was he going to fulfill his sacred duty? How was that supposed to happen? Without order, the pillars would fall into chaos and the earth would be destroyed by it.
"Dad? Are you crying again?"
He turned to the door. It was Malessa, holding a bowl of water and with a towel hung over her shoulder.
"No, no." He turned to the other side and hurriedly cleaned his tears.
"I saw you already. Are you still worried about finding the true Knight Consortium heir? I’ve told you to stop worrying so much, it’s bad for your health."
"I know at the right time, he will definitely be found. But I do fear that I might not be alive to see him. Malessa, I'm far gone and you know this. This sickness is killing me slowly and there's nothing I can do about it. Not even John can help me at this point even if he was alive because he gave up his gift."
He sighed heavily and looked at the card. Still black as usual. No changes. Malessa stretched out her hand and collected the card, placed it on the bedside table next to the bowl of water, turned back to him and held his hands and kissed it.
"I can help you find him if you want. I can help keep your promise to your old friend if you die but I know you're not going anytime soon. You're stronger than this, father. You don't want Alex and the others to see you cry. They would be disappointed at their grandfather and how weak he has become. You know, I told him lots of stories about you and your brave friends."
She stopped and kissed his hands again.
"Can I bring them here sometime? It's been two years since they last saw you. You banned me from bringing them here and it hurts them so much especially since they’re being forced to live on an isolated island."
Adrian slowly removed his hands from his daughter's hand.
"I told you the reason why you shouldn't bring them. There are people after me because I am in support of the true heir of the Knight Consortium and if they find out that I have grandchildren, I fear that they will be after them. If anything happens to your children, I will never forgive myself. Even being here is a risk for you."
"I understand, but they don’t. Reina understands too because she’s the oldest, but the kids don’t understand why they can’t see Grandpa when he’s sick. I’ll talk to them. And later, I’ll set up a video call so you can speak to them. Rest now."
Malessa sighed and dipped the towel in the water. She helped her father lay his head on his pillow and placed the towel on his head. He was already burning up again. That was probably because of his overthinking nowadays. She wondered why it was so important for her father to find the next medical god. He hadn’t told her the details of everything because he insists that she would be safer if she knew less about everything. But even without the medical god, the Knight Consortium was still doing well, they were the top health company in the world and were expanding even more. Wouldn’t it be better to just accept things as they are instead of joining what could cause a war? She wished she knew more about everything, if only so she would understand why he was so obsessed with his mission. What was even more confusing was that her father and his friends already knew who the next heir was, but they had to wait for him to come of age or something like that. What did that even mean? From what she knew the heir was already a man, was he supposed to get old first or what?
She dabbed his head and face with the wet towel till his temperature subsided. He closed his eyes but she knew that he wasn’t asleep yet, and Malessa smiled sadly at him. His face was all covered in wrinkles and it was difficult for him to breathe. It was hard to see him like this, weak and frail and sick when she remembered how agile and strong he used to be. Tears pricked her eyes and she stared at him for a minute more before she stood to leave the room.
She turned to pick up her bowl from the table and saw that the card she had dropped beside it was glowing.
"Father, father." She called.
Adrian slowly opened his eyes and was perplexed.
"The card, It's glowing, Father."
Adrian couldn't believe his eyes. Finally, the heir was ready. After all these years. With tears of joy in his eyes, he held Malessa's hands firmly and said,
“Go, my child. Follow the card, find the true heir and bring him back. It’s time for him to take his rightful place as the KNIGHT CONSORTIUM HEIR.”
"Grandfather, why are you giving me the ring? You're not dying anytime soon, you have to stay with me." Grandfather smiled sadly and patted his head. "Though I'll be gone physically, but I'll always be with you, in here, in your heart." Xaden's face was filled with tears. He wiped them with his hands. "Don't go, grandfather. Don't leave me alone." Grandfather stood up and began to walk into the darkness, leaving Xaden in tears. Xaden tried to follow but he seemed to be stuck though he could see no chains. "When you truly need me, I will come to you. It’s your time now, Xaden. Destiny has found you, make sure you win. Trust no one." His voice echoed in the darkness. Xaden woke up immediately. He was covered with sweat, blood and bandages. What kind of dream was that? It started out as a memory he had with his Grandfather when his Grandfather gave him the ring before dying, then ended with his Grandfather giving him advice and a warning. "Where am I?" he muttered. He turned to
What is this? He rubbed his eyes and looked again. It was still there. Was he going nuts? Maybe he hit his head too hard yesterday and now he was hallucinating.More words appeared.“The president is sick and can only be cured by you, keep him alive or you won’t be able to get your inheritance. Curing the President=20 xp. Earning your inheritance=50 xp. You have three days to find all the ingredients and make a potion. Each ingredient found before the time expires=5 xp. Read closely and pay attention to each name, they can only be found if you pay attention to your surroundings. Flexir, Elixir, Talpin, Ronine and lastly, the Walxir. Each ingredient is very different and serves different purposes. Take note." With that, the screen disappeared.Find ingredients? For the president? His inheritance? He was getting more confused. Grandfather never mentioned that the ring he gave to him was special or anything. He heard footsteps approaching, and someone was about to enter the room. Xaden
Adrian was sleeping when Malessa and Xaden walked in. Malessa smiled at her grandfather even though the sleeping man couldn’t see her, and nudged Xaden to move closer to Adrian. She was happy that her grandfather won’t be worried about Xaden’s whereabouts anymore. And now there was hope that Xaden would cure her father with his new found powers. She closed the door after her. Xaden was now alone with the old man. He walked around the room and noticed that the old man had a lot of antiques but there was something that caught his attention. It was a Japanese painting that hung directly above the bed. It was the same as the one his Grandfather had and also one that Adam Miller had which still hung in the Miller’s mansion. The woman might be right after all. The president must have been friends with his grandfather. "Lovely painting, right?" a voice asked behind him. Xaden was startled. He didn't hear anybody walk in. He turned round to see and it was the old man that was lying down on
"First of all, how on earth am I supposed to find those items listed? Elixir, Talpin and the rest? All those names? I don't even know where to find them. That was the first task I was given by the system. I can’t even use any special ability or ask help from the system because I don’t have points to use. I was granted 100 xp for unlocking the system and then had to use 80 xp to hide myself when the assassins came to find me." Xaden said, as he was munching on a piece of cookie. “Assassins?” The president asked with a shocked expression. He knew they would come after Xaden eventually to try and take his powers and the system away, but he hadn’t expected them to make their move so soon. How did they even find out that he was at the hospital? “My daughter never mentioned any assassins to me.” “They left before she came for me and brought me here. The system saved me.” Xaden replied. "Malessa told me that you said something about hearing a familiar name. Flexir, was it?" Xaden nodde
Adrian called for his daughter, Malessa and she came back into the room to join them.“Have all your questions been answered, Xaden?” She asked him and he sighed.“I doubt you both would be able to answer every question I have but for now I have enough information to work with so that should suffice. You have to understand that all this is a shock for me. All this might be normal for you but it isn’t for me. I went from thinking the world was normal to finding out that magic exists, or should I say, Manna. I went from being dirt poor to finding out I’m the heir to a grand fortune. Now I have a system that can grant me unbelievable power and I’m talking to the president of the whole country and his life is in my hands when I don’t really know how to wield the power available to me. It’s all overwhelming and it will all take a while to get used to.”“I understand, trust me. My father may have known about all this for a long time, but I recently found out as well when one of the council
Underneath the shade of an ancient tree that was in the large backyard, Malessa and Xaden began their training sessions some time later. It was the same place where her father had trained her when she first started to learn about Manna and being back here filled her with fond memories. The air resonated with the rhythmic sounds of each movement of the leaves as the wind made the branches sway, a dance of discipline and strength. Malessa, with her wisdom etched on her face, guided Xaden through the fundamental stances, emphasising on balance and precision.“Many people like to see Manna as something to bend to their will to achieve their selfish interests. In doing so they make it a slave and claim to be masters. This might seem like the way because after all, the aim of using Manna is to master it and use it to its full potential. But there is a difference between gaining mastery of an art and proclaiming yourself master over it. Manna is the very fabric of the universe, the heartbeat
Adrian was so proud of him and gave him a pat on the back when he returned to the house. He was now ready to go hunting for the ingredients needed for the cure. It was still very early in the morning but Xaden didn’t want to rest. Now that he could access Manna, he could fortify his body to go for a long time without sleep or food. Using the map, he was able to trace the location of Doctor Flexir, Xaden moved through the shadows towards the imposing residence of the Doctor. He accessed the Manna present around the compound and used it to shield himself with the darkness. He wasn’t invisible, but unless someone pointed a direct stream of light in his direction, it would be almost impossible to see him. He was only left with one day to complete his task and this evening, the president's health had deteriorated. He had to succeed at this task by all means. With each step, his heart pounded in sync with the urgency of his task but he forced himself not to let doubt make him lose focus on
[I choose to break the curse on the Alchemist.] He replied to the system. For a few seconds, there was no response from the System, then a list of instructions appeared.[To break the Alchemist’s curse…Access MannaLocate the dark curse binding the core of his powersChannel Manna to the core of his powersDirect the dark curse from his CoreAbsorb the curse.]He was fine with all the instructions except the last one. Absorb the curse? Won’t that be harmful to himself? He didn’t argue though, he knew that he just needed to focus on accomplishing his task.“Before you try to break the curse, let me give you a tip. You’re new to Manna and all it entails so you need to have an anchor.” The Doctor began to speak and Xaden looked at him in confusion.“An anchor? I don’t understand.”“When you access the Manna around you, using it for something small will be of no consequence. But for something of this magnitude, a curse that even I couldn’t break despite my expertise, you need to be groun
