a Mother's warning

The moment Aidan stepped through the door of their apartment, Clara was waiting for him. Her arms were crossed, and her face was pale but furious, a storm brewing behind her eyes.

“You went to see him again, didn’t you?” Clara’s voice was sharp, her hands trembling.

Aidan dropped his keys on the counter, trying to avoid her gaze. “I needed answers.”

“You had no right!” Clara snapped, her voice breaking. “I told you to leave it alone. Why can’t you just listen to me?”

Aidan spun around, his frustration boiling over. “Because you’re not telling me everything! You’ve been keeping secrets my whole life, and I’m sick of it!”

Clara took a step back, her face twisting with pain. “You think I did this to hurt you? Everything I’ve done has been to protect you!”

“Protect me from what?” Aidan shot back. “The truth? My own father?”

Clara’s hands clenched into fists. “He is not the man you think he is. His family—those people—are dangerous, Aidan. They don’t care about you. They never did.”

“Then why didn’t you tell me that before?” Aidan demanded, his voice rising. “Why did you let me believe he just abandoned us?”

“Because I wanted to spare you the pain!” Clara’s voice cracked as tears filled her eyes. “I didn’t want you to grow up hating someone who wasn’t worth your anger.”

---

Aidan paced the room, his hands running through his hair in frustration. “You don’t get it, do you? I don’t just hate him—I hate not knowing who I am. I’ve spent my whole life feeling like something was missing, and you let me live like that!”

Clara sank into a chair, burying her face in her hands. “You think it was easy for me? Watching you struggle, knowing I couldn’t tell you the whole truth? I wanted to, Aidan. But every time I tried, I thought about what they might do if they found out about you.”

Aidan froze, her words hitting him like a punch. “What do you mean, ‘what they might do’?”

Clara looked up at him, her face streaked with tears. “William’s family—they’re ruthless. When they found out about me, they threatened to ruin me. When I told them I was pregnant, they told me I’d never see William again if I didn’t leave.”

“And you just… left?” Aidan’s voice was laced with disbelief.

“They didn’t give me a choice,” Clara said bitterly. “They had power, money, connections. They made it clear that if I stayed, they would destroy us both.”

---

Aidan sat down across from her, his anger giving way to confusion. “But William… he didn’t try to fight for you? For me?”

Clara hesitated, her hands twisting in her lap. “He promised he would. He told me he’d find a way to make it work. But then one day, he was just… gone. No calls, no letters. I thought he had given up on us.”

Aidan shook his head, the pieces of the puzzle refusing to fit together. “That’s not what he said.”

Clara’s head snapped up. “What do you mean?”

“He said his family forced him to leave,” Aidan said. “He told me they made threats against you, against me. He said he didn’t have a choice.”

Clara let out a bitter laugh. “And you believe him? A man who’s lived his entire life surrounded by lies and manipulation?”

---

Aidan stood, his fists clenching. “I don’t know what to believe, Mom. But I can’t just take your word for it anymore. I need to find out for myself.”

Clara rose to her feet, her voice trembling with desperation. “Aidan, please. I’m begging you. Leave this alone. Those people… they will destroy you if you get in their way.”

“I’m not afraid of them,” Aidan said stubbornly.

“You should be!” Clara shouted. “You have no idea what they’re capable of. I do.”

Aidan stared at her, his jaw set. “I can’t live my life in fear because of them. I have to know the truth, no matter what it costs.”

---

The argument ended in silence, the air between them thick with tension. Clara retreated to her room, slamming the door behind her, while Aidan sat on the couch, his mind racing.

He pulled William’s business card from his pocket, turning it over in his hands. He knew his mother was trying to protect him, but her warnings only fueled his determination.

---

The next morning, Clara found Aidan sitting at the kitchen table, staring at the card. She hesitated in the doorway, her face etched with worry.

“Are you really going to see him again?” she asked softly.

Aidan looked up at her, his expression resolute. “Yes.”

Clara’s shoulders sagged, and she sank into a chair across from him. “If you go down this path, there’s no turning back.”

“I know,” Aidan said. “But I need to do this.”

Clara reached out, placing a trembling hand on his. “Promise me one thing. Be careful. And if you feel like you’re in danger, walk away. Please.”

Aidan nodded, but his resolve didn’t waver.

---

Later that evening, Aidan left the apartment without a word. Clara watched him go from the window, her heart heavy with dread. She knew she couldn’t
