It was the day of the party, and D’Oriental Hall had been booked out by the Robinson, the event was overflowing with different elite individuals who were elegantly dressed, donning expensive outfits and jewelry.
Waiters were dressed impeccably in white and black outfits and a bowties, walking up and down different aisles trying to cater to the needs and requests of the guests.
One of such waiters was Alphonse who hurried up and down attending to different guests and answering the orders of those who called him. He was utterly embarrassed, to say the least, but his only consolation was the promised night which he was looking forward to, the thought of entering into the promised land was his motivation for the night and was what had him going.
Engrossed with the thought of the night, he didn't see Sophia approaching him with a disdainful look on her face,
Splash!
“Did you not hear me call you all day you fook?! Why would you dare to leave our table and guests unattended to?! Huh?!”
She bellowed loudly, drawing attention to herself,
The wine she had splashed on Alphonse’s dripped down his face, temporarily blinding his eyes due to the alcohol. Sophia ignored his dazed look and continued her screaming after garnering people’s attention,
“Sometimes, I often wonder what sort of crime my family committed, that made us saddled with someone like you as a husband for my sister!!! You're nothing but a burden moocher, a freeloader, that's what you are!”
While she spoke, some of the guests around let out loud gasps while a few offers had their eyes widened,
“I knew it!”
“Oh my goodness! To be burdened with such a creature as a son-in-law
“He can't even afford to feed himself, they feed him. He has to work for that somehow!”
A lot of guests were beginning to give their two cents as they watched the display. Alphonse’s cheeks had turned crimson, mixing with the wine on his face and he had his head lowered, his chin touching his chest.
Sophia wasn't done with roasting him, as she continued with a glint in her eyes, she was enjoying this more than she ought to,
“Who even named you?! Imagine having a name like yours, Alphonse, such a ridiculous name, as ridiculous as its bearer!” her lips curled upward while she spoke.
Hearing her observation, the guest all busted out in loud laughter, snickering behind their palms, emboldened by their reactions, she further went on,
“Tell me how do you sleep at night?! Not only are you a freeloader to this family, but there's nothing you're good at, you can't get or keep a job, can't do household chores properly, and you certainly can't perform your husbandly duties!”
She said with a knowing smirk and a gleam in her eyes, before she leaned her face, and used her finger to lift his chin up,
“So tell me, what are you good for? You good for nothing bastard!”
No one had noticed Alphonse’s clenched fists and jaw, he was boiling within and he was enraged that he couldn't do anything to defend his honour for no one seemed to be on his side. He subtly glanced around the room looking for his wife, but she was nowhere to be found.
For a moment, Alphonse was inclined to make a retort,
‘I'm good for nothing and I agree, but you who's good for something cannot seem to keep a man for more than a month as they all leave your sorry ass!’
His throat ached to let out those words and throw them at Sophia’s face, but he refrained himself for the year of the crowd that was on her side, and for the fear of her landing a slap on his face, she had been known to do that occasionally.
Meanwhile, Lady Margaret who had been standing and listening nearby, she alongside her friends was so entertained that she felt Sophia didn't need to have all the fun at Alphonse’s extent,
With curling lips, she approached the duo, avoiding the drying puddle of the wine stain on the floor, she faced Alphonse and smiled smugly before putting up a melodrama,
“Dear son-in-law, I'm currently cash strapped, and I need just a change of a hundred bucks quickly, please hand it over so I can sort the situation out”
She stretched out her hand, and arched a brow at him, her eyes gleaming. The guests once more began to laugh and snicker among themselves,
“Where does he want to see such money from, I'll be stunned if the impoverished fool has a penny on him!”
“Oohh Lady Margaret doesn't play fair, I wouldn't like to be in her bad book. I'm sure she knows the wretched fool doesn't have any change on him, yet she's asking him”
“If the dunce so much as produces a cent, I'll make sure to give the Robinsons an extra thousand bucks with my gift!”
One by one, all of them opined while looking at Alphonse, Alphonse was praying for the ground to open and swallow him or for him to suddenly develop some sort of invisible or telepathic skills,
With a sadistic smile, Lady Magaret tutted, giving a long hiss
“I'm waiting precious son in law”
Alphonse gulped and lost all the colour in his face,
“Of course, you would not be able to afford it! When you cannot afford the basic things for yourself!! We feed you, clothe you, house you, and even pay the bills of your wretched mother!!! I wonder who cursed us with someone like you!”
Every word she spoke was like a bullet, jabbing Alphonse as he flinched back at each attack, wincing as he did, but Lady Margaret was far from done,
“Your useless mother lies ill in the hospital, unable to help herself and her equally useless son leeches off us, unable to care for his mother, such useless family dynamics, tell me, dear son-in-law, can anything good come out of your family?!”
The crowd sneered, sniggered, and laughed at the rhetorical question while Alphonse only stared with a dazed look on his face.
Lady Margaret with Sophia still beside her, sneered and got in Alphonse’s face, with her lips stretched in a forced and false smile and her eyes shooting daggers, she asked through gritted teeth,
“What can you do? You useless nonentity!”
Alphonse closed his eyes tightly, he could feel her cold breath on him and could do nothing but move back, he could feel the tears brimming in his eyes, even as his throat burned, His mother-in-law continued her subtle threats in his ears while sneering at him, he subtly opened his eyes and was disappointed to see the same hateful look in her eyes.“Sooner or later we’re going to throw you and your miserly belongings out the door to the streets where my precious picked your worthless self up from!” She paused, as though she was trying to catch her breath before she went on,“You're nothing but an absolute fool who keeps taking advantage of my daughter's kindness, but all of that is going to end soon!”Alphonse couldn't help but notice the knowing smirk and glint in her eyes with what she had uttered, knowing he could not get any answer from her, Alphonse hunched his shoulders and drooped his head to his chin. Lady Margaret had stepped back a little and was now glaring at him, daring
Before she spoke, she let out a scornful laugh, and then straightened herself up,“You're the one without any shame Alphonse! You don't have any money to your name and yet you dare to raise your hands to someone who can afford your entire generation, someone who isn't in your class or league!”She huffed and then continued, this time with narrowed eyes and clenched fists,“Who do you think you are to question me and interrupt us?!” she glanced behind her smirking lover and pointed between themselves,Although Alphonse was taken aback, causing him to flinch back, he raised himself to his full height,“I’m y-your husband”He tried to sound confident although his voice was cracking, Vivian on the other hand sent her head back and laughed to her heart’s content, “You're not only delusional but hilarious, you think someone like me will be saddled with your kind?! One who has nothing, and I'll leave a man who can afford to get me all the niceties of life, take care of my needs, and buy me
The next morning, Alphonse awoke with a heavy heart. After the humiliating events of the previous night, he barely slept. As the sun rose over the city, he knew what he had to do; return home and confront his so-called family. He walked slowly through the streets, dreading what was to come. As he approached the grand house that was once his home, he stopped to steal himself, taking a deep breath, he marched up the front steps and knocked firmly on the large wooden door. Moments later, the door swung open to reveal Vivian, Her lips curled into a sneer at the sight of Alphonse,"What do you want?" she spat. Behind her, the rest of the Robinson family had gathered in the foyer. Margaret stood with her arms crossed, glaring at Alphonse. Tyler leaned casually against the bannister, a smug grin on his face. Sophia stood beside her new boyfriend, both looking at Alphonse with disdain. Alphonse clenched his fists, trying to keep his composure,"I've come to speak with you, Vivian. Alone
In the dimly lit boutique, Alphonse dedicated himself to his work, the soft swish of his mop a constant in the quiet store. He had taken the job out of sheer necessity, the weight of his mother's medical bills and his own survival pressing down on him. Each stroke of the mop was a silent vow to overcome the hardships that had befallen him, to rise above the scorn and betrayal of those he once called family. As he moved with a quiet intensity, lost in his thoughts and the monotony of his task, he failed to notice the entrance of a couple. The boutique, known for its exclusive clientele, was the perfect shopping ground for those draped in wealth and arrogance. Alphonse, absorbed in his work, inadvertently pushed his mop bucket into the woman's path. The collision was minor, but the woman's reaction was anything but."Argh!" She let out a shriek that pierced the calm atmosphere of the boutique, drawing the attention of everyone present. Alphonse's head snapped up at the sound, his eyes
Alphonse had hoped for fairness, perhaps a chance to tell his side of the story, but reality had other plans."But I didn't—" he began, his voice tinged with desperation, trying to find some understanding in the manager's eyes, but the manager simply raised a hand, cutting him off."The decision is final," the manager stated, a note of regret in his tone that did little to soften the blow, "You need to leave now."At a nearby table, Vivian and Geoffrey shared a look of victory, their scheme having worked flawlessly. The other customers started murmuring, their voices a mix of sympathy, judgement, and indifference."Can you believe that?" whispered one customer to another,"Thrown out just like that.""I heard he was causing trouble," someone else chimed in, eager to spread the rumor.A woman shook her head, whispering to her companion, "Seems harsh. Didn't even let him explain."And from a corner, a man muttered to his friend, "Drama's always good for business, eh? Makes the day g
Alphonse and Peter made their way through the rain-soaked streets, the silence between them thick with anticipation. The plush interior of the limousine felt suffocating to Alphonse, each second stretching longer as his mind swirled with doubts and questions. Was this all a joke? Or a prank? He couldn't help but roll his eyes at the absurdity of the situation, his heart pounding against his chest."Are you okay?" Peter's voice broke the silence, laced with genuine concern.Alphonse clenched his fists, trying to steady his shaking hands, "I don't know," he admitted, his voice barely above a whisper,"This all feels like some twisted joke."Peter nodded, understanding the turmoil that Alphonse was going through. "I know this is a lot to take in," he said, his tone soft. "But I assure you, it's all true."The limousine pulled up to the hospital, and they quickly made their way inside. The hospital's sterile smell and the sound of distant beeping machines did little to calm Alphonse's
Stepping out of the room together, Peter guided a lost Alphonse to a corner, assuring him that all would be fine."Your mother is brave. You don't have to be worried about her condition. She'll be alright.""Hmm, " Alphonse responded, looking back at the room his mother was in.His head was still welled with the sudden revelation of his identity, leaving him wondering where he has to start from on what to do next.As if Peter Understood his thoughts, he placed his hand on Alphonse's shoulder, gaining the young man's attention back on him. When he looked at Peter..."It's time for you to claim what is rightfully yours, Alphonse. Do come with me and sign on the necessary documents. It's important they are attended to now, " Peter suggested. This felt like a dream to the young man."So, once I sign the papers everything will be..." He paused, trying to accept his new life that's about to change."Yes, everything will be in your name from now onwards. You're your father's heir after all,
Having his mother back home after a long period at the hospital, pleased Alphonse to the core. He couldn't stop himself from giving her all the food she wanted and the care. And Hannah got tired of the care, to the point of pleading with her son to stop."You just returned from the hospital. At least have some more...""No Alphonse. I'm okay my son. I'm really full, " She pleaded, stopping him from spoiling her any further. Her face brightened with smiles as she gave out a chuckle, taking hold of Alphonse's hands. He was already grumbling with her refusal but smiled when he swe her laughing at him."My dear boy. I'm okay. All I need is rest now. Trust me," She said, assuring her son. "Okay " He said, accepting her request. With the help of the maids in the mansion, Hannah was taken to her room to rest, while her son remained back at the living room with his late father's butler, Peter. The two were alone watching Hannah leave, until she was out of sight.Once she was gone, Peter p
