The stern man looked worse than stern. His disguise was stiff as rosewood. What further could he give, did he have to butcher his kin with his own hands to keep her? He saw himself a man of character, he did not renege pledges. He did not drop promises. He'd sworn to cover the girl till she was no more or maybe him no more. One and nine decades after his woman 's departure, he still felt bond to that deathbed oath. He still saw the child as alive and that made him responsible.
