Chapter 7

“How cheap! I can't believe my elder sister sold herself for $10 million,” Camara mocked, and Selena's countenance changed. She was angry but chose to hide her anger so she wouldn't ruin her grandma's birthday celebration.

Dominic took a deep breath, his tone firm but measured. "Camara, that comment is disrespectful and uncalled for. Selena and I are married because we love each other, and the decision was based on more than just financial considerations. Let's focus on the joyous occasion and show some respect.”

Camara faced Dominic, ready to fight back. She was angry that he didn't have the right to reprimand her like a child, but Silas quickly stopped his wife from reacting to Dominic. He was afraid and didn't want his wife to mess with Dominic, realizing he could be the son of a very rich and influential person in the state.

Clearly envious, Silas swiftly searched for Dominic's name to check if he was a celebrity he wasn't aware of. Finding no matches, he became suspicious of Dominic.

After calming his wife, Silas proceeded to text Mark, his friend and police chief, asking for help in investigating Dominic's identity.

Every gesture and interaction between Dominic and Selena seemed to intensify Silas's unease. Silas discreetly watched Dominic as the celebrations unfolded, and the exchanged glances and shared laughter only deepened his suspicions. He couldn't understand how someone like Dominic could win over the typically arrogant Selena.

He had countlessly offers to help Selena using his Uncle’s position to brag on helping her with her company but she has abruptly refused his advances.

Unable to hold back his curiosity, Silas approached Dominic with a seemingly friendly demeanor. "Dominic, my man, I must say, you've really caught Selena's attention," he commented with a forced smile.

Dominic, sensing the underlying tone, responded calmly, "Thank you, Silas. I truly care for Selena and want to make her happy."

Silas chuckled, but there was a sharpness to it. "I just find it interesting, you know? You don't exactly fit the usual mold of those associated with the Alexiou family. What's your background, Dominic?"

Dominic, composed, replied, "I come from a different city, and I've worked hard to establish myself. My focus is on making Selena happy and building a life together."

Unsatisfied with the response, Silas pressed on. "And what about your connections? You must have some powerful allies to save Selena's company."

Choosing his words carefully, Dominic said, "I've worked with various people, but my priority is Selena. I'm not here to impress or gain favors. My intentions are genuine."

Silas raised an eyebrow, still skeptical. "Well, let's just say, I'll be keeping an eye on you, Dominic. We can't have any undesirable elements around my family."

Dominic smiled to himself as he watched Silas, he was sure his presence intimidates him and quickly shrugged off the feeling as they prepared for the family dinner.

The family soon gathered around the lavish dinner table for dinner, a setting that starkly contrasted Dominic's usual lifestyle. The opulent room spoke of wealth and status, which impressed Dominic.

Grandma, with a stern demeanor, peered at Dominic over her glasses. "So, young man, what is it that you do for a living?" she inquired with a hint of disdain.

Dominic responded, with a calm smile, "I work in Selena's company." Dominic's response caused a murmur of disapproval to pass through the room. Grandma scoffed, "Selena's company? It sounds like a little venture. And the people there, are they even worth mentioning?”

Rose, Selena's mother, attempting to smooth things over, chimed in, "Oh, mother, this is how the wealthy experience life. Casual work, but when needed, they can throw around millions to solve problems. It's quite normal."

Rose was simply taking sides to win his favor, hoping that he was as wealthy as Selena had described earlier. She believed in keeping the rich in-law close to her, with the expectation of being offered a significant project, similar to what her mother had experienced.

Grandma remained unimpressed, her disapproval eminent in her gesture. She turned to Dominic again and asked, "And what about real estate? Surely someone of your standing owns some property." But Dominic's response was unexpected. "I've always rented an apartment in this city," he admitted casually.

Rose raised an eyebrow. "Renting? Not a homeowner? Are you sure you're not some wealthy man from another city?"

"Yes, I am originally from another city," Dominic said firmly, maintaining his composure. Grandma's dissatisfaction was palpable.

The disapproval in her eyes deepened, but before she could voice her thoughts, Silas interjected. "Well, actually, he's not some hidden rich man," he declared, with a smug smile playing on his lips.

The room fell silent, and all eyes followed Silas in anticipation. He basked in the attention, relishing the moment. Confirming his suspicion, Richards replied that Dominic was just an ordinary guy juggling part-time jobs. Silas glared, hoping to gain Selena's admiration, and he felt a sense of pride in himself.

"He's just a regular guy. No hidden riches, no secret fortune. Just a common man," he continued, revealing Dominic's identity.

Selena glanced at Dominic with a sigh. Dominic didn't seem to flinch, but all eyes fell on him, making him feel exposed.
