Chapter 9

" Why don't we go to my house?" Selena suggested as they got to the carpark, she still had her rickety car they could take home. 

Dominic shrugged before nodding slowly." Okay." It wasn't as though he had a place to stay since he and Diana were no longer together. 

Together, they entered her car and she smiled at him as she threw the car keys at him. He caught them with ease. 

"Will you drive?" She asked him before furrowing her eyebrows as she stared at him, "I'm sorry, can you drive?" 

Dominic nodded, he didn't blame her for thinking that he wasn't capable of handling a car. " I can manage." He said and ignited the car. 

Selena smiled, " I trust you, but I don't want to die." She said. 

He grinned and Selena was taken aback by his handsomeness. Diana missed a gem and she was happy that she was the one who got it. 

" I can feel your eyes on me." He said and Dominic smiled as he navigated the car home. Then he suddenly brought the car to a halt causing Selena to be startled.

" Why did you stop the car?" Selena asked with her eyes widening a small fraction. " Is everything okay?" She inquired worriedly as her eyes raked over his form searching for what could be happening to him. 

He shook his head slowly, "I don't want you to return to that house. I want to get you a new apartment." He said and reached for her hand gently. " I mean us, we are going to get married soon so it's imperative that we stay somewhere else." 

Selena's eyes widened like large saucers, if anyone had told her that Dominic had a treasury of wealth, she would have laughed them to scorn but as it stood right now, it was getting realer than real could get. " Just like that?" 

" Yes." He bobbed his head and watched her try to comprehend what he was saying.

" I'm sorry, do you know how much getting a building is in this economy?" She asked him to be sure in case he didn't know what he was about to do.

" It's pretty expensive." 

There she went again with her disbelief, " I know, that's a good idea right?" Dominic replied, staring deep into her eyes and Selena bobbed her head, she was still in a daze at his offer. 

Selena noticed that she was just staring at him and it was becoming awkward so she squeezed his hand and smiled at him, " Okay, I think that's a good idea but I don't want you to spend too much.  Where do you want to buy the house?" She asked. He was already going to spend a lot of money for their wedding. Adding this to it would not be a good idea. 

" I can take care of it." He said and she stared at him in surprise.

" Just how rich are you?" She inquired. He wasn't even flinching at the thought of purchasing a house in this economy. It was still a surprise that he worked odd jobs when he was filthy rich. 

"Sufficient to take care of you, I hope that's okay?" Dominic inquired as he turned on the ignition again, a little smirk played on his lips. She gained his admiration with her questions. If it were to be Diane, she wouldn't have hesitated to receive the gifts. She wouldn't have bothered to ask about how he was coping.

Selena touched his hand again slowly, " I don't want you to go broke trying to prove anything to my family. I am fine with staying in my house till we can get something more comfortable." 

" I can handle it." Dominic said ending the conversation.

" Okay, then." She said warily, she didn't know what job he did yet but she was going to find out. 

" Will you take me to your company?" She asked, stroking his palm softly as he drove on 

" Company?" Dominic replied, a half smile crossing his lips as he realized that he had not told her the nature of his job. Yet another reason he was beginning to fall in love with her. She was not willing to spend money that she couldn't guarantee the source. 

" Yes, there must be a place you are working to be able to have such an amount of money to splurge, wait can you tell me the reason you hid your identity from your wife? Also, why did you agree to work those odd jobs and endure such humiliation." She fired at him.

" I can't answer all those questions at once." Dominic said and Selena stared at him. 

" You can answer from the top." She replied. She needed to assuage her conscience, she had not paid too much attention to what happened between Dominic and Diane.

"I am what you can call a soldier, I am just a young guy with a few connections." He said, although it was the half-truth, she didn't have to know that.

"In what army?" 

" Victoria?" 

Selena furrowed her brows in confusion. Was that the name of his cantonment?

" Victoria?" She repeated.

" Yes." 

She didn't say anything for two minutes as she tried to figure out if he was serious or not.

" I was searching for true love " 

Have you found one? She wanted to ask but changed her mind, " So, what about  now?" She asked.

" I am getting married to you, that should account for something." Dominic replied cryptically, and she tried to figure of what he must mean by that.

Was he in love with her? He couldn't be in love with her as they just began their relationship. Unless... he had been eyeing her when he was still married which she highly doubted. 

Another thought flashed into her mind as she tried to understand what was going on, "you've not answered the last question." She said. 

Dominic groaned inwardly, he thought she'd forget about that. " I don't know, I guess...." His phone rang interrupting their conversation. " Excuse me." 

" Sir, your attention is needed back at Victoria."

" I don't know why you are calling me, I thought I told you that I wouldn't be coming home soon, why the disturbance then?" Dominic replied in a professional voice taking Selene by surprise. 

Gone was the timid man who never spoke, his demeanor changed and it was obvious that he was a man of authority. 

" Yes, sir. I know but we have a problem that only you can solve." Eleanor replied, watching the commandant from the corner of her eyes. 

Dominic groaned, " Tell me what the issue is and I'll tell you what to do, I cannot leave my base right now." 

Eleanor sighed, she had told her other superior that Dominic would refuse to return, although she hid the fact that he was about to get married to another woman. " It's about the Windsor palace." 

" What do they want?" He asked as he continued driving. 

Selena tapped his left arm gently, " Park by the wayside." She said and he removed the phone from his ear. 

"Hold on a minute." He ordered.

" Yes, sir." Eleanor replied with gusto. She imagined that he must be with his wife to be that was why he was telling to hold on for him. That useless woman lost a gem and an opportunity for life. Now another woman was reaping where she sowed because of impatience. She was glad anyway because she never liked Diane in the first place. 

Dominic sought a convenient place to park and put the call on hold. " Sorry, I have to pick this call." He said begrudgingly.

Selena waved her arms in dismissal, " Oh, that's a little thing. Go ahead, you don't want to keep her waiting. It seems urgent." She said.

Dominic sighed, he was lucky to snag a gem. Although she didn't know who was calling, she maintained calmness and that was the kind of person he wanted in his life. It seemed as though a scale had fallen from his eyes and he wondered what he ever saw in Diana. 

" Hello, sir." Eleanor said when Dominic lifted the phone from the hold option. "Can you hear me sir?" Eleanor asked and he didn't say anything for the first two minutes.

" Are you in a meeting?" Eleanor inquired.

" What did you say happened to Windsor Palace?"  He changed the subject.

Eleanor, who knew that her superior was trying to avoid the question, " There is a pending war between them and Victoria. Rumors should have gotten to that place." She said, wondering why he hadn't heard about the threat.

" I have been busy. Send threats back to Windsor telling them that we don't want trouble, but if they refuse to stop, we wouldn't mind dealing with them." He said. 

"I'll do that immediately, sir." Eleanor replied and waited for him to hang up.

Dominic hung up and rubbed a hand over his forehead, " Is everything okay at Victoria? Who is Eleanor?" Selena inquired softly with her eyes roaming over his face.
