THE leader of the dragon riders ordered his men to land, and before Jie could think properly, they were all on the ground with their weapons aimed at them.
“We will kill everyone if you don’t surrender the holder of the Creation Orb!” The leader gestured with his hand, and suddenly, a red flame materialized from his palm.
Jie swallowed in silence. He could hear his loud heartbeat, but he still held his head high. It wouldn’t hurt if he tried to negotiate.
“Let me talk to him.” Jie strolled past Aelec.
“Be careful, but I trust you. Only you can handle them.” Aelec was so serious that Jie’s jaw almost dropped. Why did this man trust him so much?
If it was hand-to-hand combat, Jie was confident he’d surely have an edge in a fight. But these men looked menacing, especially when their beast appeared tamed. How was it even possible?
“We don’t know what you’re talking about. We are just a small village trying to survive under these harsh conditions on the island.” Jie sauntered toward the leader. He was just buying time. At the corner of his eyes, he was trying to take a glimpse at Nyssa, who finally got inside the cave because Kali forced her in.
“I will not repeat myself. This island is uninhabitable, and it’s obvious that this oasis was made by the Creation Orb. It reeks magic in case you are not aware.”
Jie clenched his jaw. He just confirmed that these people were after Nyssa.
“That is not true. This place existed even before.” Jie sounded adamant. He prayed that he was convincing enough to make them believe his lies.
The leader chuckled. “We are not ignorant, like you! Savages! I know the holder is...” he paused. The man smirked and turned his head towards the cave’s entrance, “hiding inside that.” He motioned his hand to his men to check the cave.
Jie almost lost his cool. He thought of several ways to evade casualties since they couldn’t face these warriors. They’d just be slaughtered like animals.
“Wait! I’ll trade myself. I’m an orb holder, too!” Jie sprinted near the leader but immediately paused as the hundreds of spears pointed at him suddenly lit their tips with raging flames.
Oh, crap!
The leader scrutinized him from head to foot. “You’re just a lowly human. Back off!”
The dragon riders went inside the cave. Jie followed them, hoping that Nyssa had hidden in a safe place. However, before he could check everyone inside, the leader came back carrying Nyssa unconscious.
No! Jie fretted out.
“Put her down!” Jie warned. His vision caught Kali lying motionless on the ground; she was bleeding, while Tarian was tending to her.
“I said put her down, damn it! You can have me instead of her. She is just a child!” Jie tried to negotiate one last time, trying to put his trepidation in place.
The leader glared at Jie. “I am Commander Semme of Vatre’s Aerial Army, and I have an order to kill everyone on sight here except this orb holder if anybody shows resistance!”
Meanwhile, Herlan and Zuri refused to listen. They saw an opportunity to hit their enemies at close range.
Zuri gazed at his cousin, knowing the consequences of their actions. “Let’s do it!”
Determination was all over Herlan’s face. “Now!”
The two adjusted their aim, but as soon as they released their arrows, the dragon riders used their fire magic with a swift incantation. It was led by a man wearing a monocle.
“Zuri! Herlan!” Jie felt like a bucket of cold water was poured all over him when he saw his two friends burned to ash when they tried to fight sneakily despite Aelec’s objection.
Now, they were all surrounded and kept as hostages, waiting to be slaughtered without mercy if they acted irrationally.
The hatred that gathered inside Jie’s chest grew even more. Zuri and Herlan were killed just like that! They couldn’t even mourn the deaths of their comrades.
“Xeric, burn this place along with everyone if their filthy mouth won’t stop blabbering nonsense!” Semme was nearly losing patience.
“Yes, commander!” The flame in Xeric’s spear went larger, which made Jie flinch.
Jie glared at the commander and his second-in-command. “We are not savages!”
“Ethros, please don’t do anything stupid!” Finn warned him. Tears were slowly forming in his eyes.
Jie inhaled and exhaled sharply, trying to calm his raging mind. For the past few months that he’d been with these people, he considered them his family, especially Nyssa, who believed he was still Ethros. He’d do everything to protect this little innocent girl who sacrificed a lot for their survival.
“You will pay for this!” Jie finally let everything loose. “I will avenge my comrades you killed and I won’t let you take her!”
“I warned you.” The commander turned to his men. “Make this place ablaze until everything turns to ash!”
Aelec and his men sprinted to safety when the ball of fire rained from the sky. However, Ethros firmly stood on his ground, uncaring of the catastrophe that befell them.
“I will kill every one of you!” Jie’s voice reverberated. Clouds started to form in the sky, obstructing the illumination of the full moon. And then there was thunder.
“Commander, beware! He must be the holder of a minor wind orb!” Xeric warned.
Jie was unaware if it was his doing. All he felt was the surge of anger engulfing his body, and he began shaking. The feeling was familiar because he had been through this that night in Ardhi Village when the monsters attacked.
“Give Nyssa back to us!” Jie commanded. There was another thunderstorm. The bolt of lightning made the dragons squeal.
Aelec saw the same Ethros he witnessed that tragic night. His natural emerald eyes now glinted in crimson, and his mouth was uttering incomprehensible words that seemed like an ancient spell. It was like he transformed into a different person. The kind and gentle Ethros was gone; all he could see was a young boy filled with malice and ready to kill.
When the forest was ablaze, the ground trembled and everyone fell, aside from Commander Semme, who still firmly held Nyssa’s body. His face was void of emotion as he observed the boy with crimson eyes.
“Fascinating,” the commander murmured.
Aelec’s eyes widened when they heard the familiar roar coming underground.
The creatures of the Abyss were trying to break out!
Jie let his body move as his consciousness began to fade, heedless of what was going on. In his mind, he could vividly see the monsters below them trying to free themselves, but they couldn’t resurface because a glowing red seal that bore an unfamiliar crest prevented them from doing so.
As the ground violently quaked again, Commander Semme waved his palm, and a fire shackle emerged. He threw it in the air, and it landed perfectly on Jie’s neck, creating burn marks with a distinctive circular pattern.
“Impeding Shackle!” The commander snapped his fingers, and Jie fell hard on the sandy surface. “Bring him as well. He’d be a useful slave in the mines.” Commander Semme even appeared bored and not threatened at all.
“Yes, commander!” Xeric dragged Jie and brought him up to his dragon. "The Luominen is ours!"
“Ethros, no! Oh, goddess. Please help us!” Amri’s eyes burned with hopelessness. He tried to reach for his crossbow, but Aelec stopped him.
“Don’t get too emotional, Amri. We’ll surely find ways to save them.” Aelec tried to sound optimistic even though he knew it was nearly impossible to do so. “For now, let’s do everything we can to put out the fire.”
“They’ll kill them, Aelec!” Finn didn’t mind the heat that slowly engulfed them.
Aelec’s jaw clenched. “And they’ll slaughter us, too. We just lost two of our comrades. I can’t let us be extinct just because emotions cloud our judgments. We can always rebuild this place once they’re gone. But if we lose our people, no magic can revive the dead.”
They couldn’t do anything to get Ethros and Nyssa. Their difference in power was overwhelming. All they could do was stare at the dragon riders mounted on their beasts and fly away.
Meanwhile, inside the cave, Kali slowly opened her eyes, and tears fell.
“Nyssa, I’m sorry,” Kali whispered. “Ethros…”
It was not long before Kali found that they had lost two comrades and Ethros, too. It broke everyone’s spirit.
Aelec began to question himself. How could he save them? Could they come on time?
AMIDST the busy capital city of Vatre, the Idhair Guild was celebrating their successful retrieval mission. Commander Semme let himself relax while drinking his favorite beer. “Commander, are you certain that the human child is the new holder of the creation orb?” Xeric asked. They were at one table while the others were drowning themselves in alcohol. Among everyone, the lieutenant appeared so wasted for drinking too much that his monocle was out of place. Semme chugged his beer. “My mana detection has never failed. Among those savages, that girl was emitting a very strong energy that can intimidate anybody if properly harnessed.” “Aren’t you wondering as to why the Luominen chose a little girl? She’s not even of royal status!” Xeric clicked his tongue and drank from his mug. “Sometimes the logic of this world is strange. Isn’t it?” Semme took a deep breath. “That’s also a mystery to me. But it doesn’t matter; at least we succeeded on Taftani’s given quest, although we took that l
KAFLE was amused to see him rant. "I'm surprised you don't know about it." Shock crossed Jie’s face. “Is there such a thing? I knew that guy did something nasty!” He remembered the commander who kidnapped Nyssa. “It seemed you had no idea how magic works.” Kafle appeared puzzled. “Every citizen of the Learaf Archipelago can wield magic. However, it isn’t as strong when you’re a royal. Since they possessed the mother orbs.” “Learaf Archipelago?” It caught Jie’s attention. Now would be the perfect time to know more about this world. Kafle surely knew many things that the Ardhians did not. Kafle did not conceal how perplexed he was. “Tell me, young boy. Are you from an isolated tribe since you seemed shocked to learn about the Shackle Curse?” “If I told you I came from another world, would you believe me?” Jie chuckled. Kafle shook his shoulders. “Anything is possible.” Jie gaped at the elf. “Seriously? Do you know how I can travel back?” The elf tapped his arm. “I’m just k
TAFTANI gazed intensely at the crystal full of green luminous liquid as if it were a state of the art. He was proud of himself since they successfully retrieved the Creation Orb, and it would not be long for it to be in their possession. Once the new holder lost her will to live, the orb would be transferred to the empty round casket he made.Nyssa was inside the crystal; at a glance, one would think she was in peaceful slumber. But it was the complete opposite. For the young girl, every apparatus connected to her body that was meant to extract the power of the orb brought excruciating pain. The scream that wanted to come through Nyssa’s throat was muffled by a mask covering her mouth. She could not explain the searing torment that went through every vein in her body. She was stripped of her clothes as soon as she was brought into this chamber.Brother, I will wait for you... Tears cascaded down Nyssa’s cheek that couldn’t be seen because of the green liquid.I want to live… She had a
AWAKEN with the sensation of a gentle touch to his wounded back. Jie felt it was soothing, yet he couldn't move his body.“Ouch!” he grunted.“Stay put. Izora is healing your injuries.” Kafle held Jie’s shoulder to prevent him from moving.“Thank god, I'm still alive.” Jie let out a sigh of relief. But he grimaced in pain with just a slight movement. He was lying on a thin mat on the cold floor. The three of them were inside a small cell, and scent was tolerable compared to the first chamber he was brought into.“You’re barely alive,” Kafle faced his daughter. “How's his healing progress?”The little elf shook her head. “Not good. But the healing orb I have is enough to stop the bleeding.”Jie gaped at the child. “You got a healing orb and didn't surrender it to the guards?!”The young elf glared at him and whispered. “Ungrateful bastard!”“Hey, kid! Watch your mouth. I'm older than you.” Jie again felt the searing pain in his back.Izora rolled her eyes. “Dimwit!”“Kafle, teach your
JIE voluntarily surrendered himself at night when he couldn’t mine an orb. He toughened himself despite seeing dead bodies around him; some were severely injured from the flogging while the others were being carried in the stretchers coming from the arena and going to the iron lift descending to the depths of Dreqin.“Ethros, please don’t do it.” Kafle persisted in persuading him, knowing his idea was suicide.Jie silently swallowed. His decision was firm. He’d rather take his chances to see what the fight was all about. Aside from his curiosity, it was his way of making penance because he couldn’t save Nyssa, no matter how hard he tried.“If I get killed, please tell my sister what happened here.”“Ethros…”“But I'll make sure to stay alive, so I'll be the one to tell her. That sounds better, isn’t it?” He stepped down the stairs and strolled towards the fighting chamber.Kafle could see that he was determined. The elf carried his daughter and scurried behind the young man.“Be caref
MAGIC had taken a toll on Jie’s body. He’d been unconscious for two full days, which made Kafle worried.“Do you think his body can withstand it? I've been dying to ask him how he did that. Does that mean the shackle curse did not affect him?” Kafle kept walking back and forth near Jie while Izora pressed a small orb to Jie’s chest.“His heartbeat is stable now, unlike yesterday. But he can't be going on like this. Sooner or later, Revie will retake him to entertain themselves until this boy surrenders and dies.” Izora quickly grabbed the orb when she heard incoming footsteps. He sat beside Jie, whose body was shaking involuntarily while sweating hard.“He's in a convulsive state again.” He held Jie’s forehead. “His temperature is dropping.”Captain Revie showed up and followed two guards into their cell. They got in and checked on the three of them.“Is he dead?” Revie checked Jie’s face using his foot. “I guess he won't last another day. Too bad, I was impressed by how he defeated th
KING Malik scrutinized the elf child and the human young boy, who looked terribly sick. He couldn’t care less, even if he died. He never felt even the slightest pity for them. They were just lowly peasants.“What sorcery did you use to defeat my favorite executioner?” the king asked Izora. The young elf gazed up and met the eyes of the king, yet she didn't say a word. As if completely unconcerned by the king's royal presence, Izora sneered.King Malik raised his hand, and it landed on Izora’s cheek. “Insolence!”The young elf lost her footing and immediately got up, but Thora grabbed Izora’s hair.“How dare you look straight into the eyes of the king! Bow down!” The concubine forced the Izora to kneel. The king turned to Ethros. “Who is this useless brat? If he can't mine, just throw him up to the wasteland for the azugaurs to feast on!”Captain Revie crep
DAMIEN commanded his enormous falcon to land at a safe place on the outskirts of Ankhe City. It took him a while to reach Vatre because he had to take extra precautions. He made sure to arrive at the Nebe Festival while the aerial army patrolling the sky was smaller so he could sneak in. “These Vatreans are so careless as hell amid every festivity,” Damien said with a smug grin as he removed the green cloak covering his body. He pulled out a white handkerchief from his pocket and whispered a few spells to write a report about his arrival in the empire. “All right, Habicht, you can go now. Bring this to General Mord.” He tied the handkerchief in a knot on the side of the bird’s magic leash. Habicht squeaked before it flew back into the sky and disappeared. It was not long when four other men gathered, wearing the same green cloak with an embroidered crest on the chest. They were in the darkest part of an abandoned town near the border of Dezertus District. Damien breathed out. “
CRISTON’S dumbfounded expression turned into awe as a series of flickering blue lightning countered the attackers. It was not long until it was revealed that a platoon of military elves consisting mainly of mages was positioned in proximity of the border for defense.“Indeed, the military might of the Southern Hanum is state of the art. Look at that? In just a blink, the aggressors retreated. That’s the famous Starlight Regiment, stationed on the borders. Their sole task is to kill all enemies on sight.” Xylas shook his head as he chuckled, and he added, “General Ibri is surely ruthless. Rumors had been circulating that he secretly trained private elite armies of mages defying the order of the late queen.”“That’s why Advani remained untouched. General Ibri is the head of the war council after all. The Supreme General of Hanum. We’re lucky; even though they vetted on us, General Mord did everything so we could have easy access in this territory.” Criston stared at the magnificent view
ON THE rocky shore of West Advani, Pearlie crawled with her severely injured body while carrying Nyssa on her back, while Damien remained unconscious near them. The huge waves had helped them reach the island. The dawn was breaking, but the sounds of the night insects could be heard around, along with the turbulent splash of the waves and lightning piercing from the sky.“We are safe now.” Her tears kept falling from her eyes and turned into pearls as she recalled Tiedus’ heroic sacrifice for everyone to reach the shore of Advani.“Captain, wake up. We’re here,” Pearlie whispered through her dried throat. She felt her body was on fire.Pearlie fought hard not to lose consciousness, knowing they might meet their demise with the wild animals around if no one could rescue them. Fortunately, as her vision started to get blurred, she witnessed two gigantic birds—a falcon and a raven hovering above them.“It’s them!” said the man riding the giant falcon. It was Criston holding his golden gr
AS TZEITEL scurried to return to her villa to check on Izvern, she was not expecting to see his brother waiting on the entrance without his usual two guards. Agni seemed agitated.“Brother, what are you doing here? I thought you left since I haven’t seen you in the banquet hall.” She turned to her ladies-in-waiting behind her, headed by Marina. “Leave us. I need some time alone with my seventh brother.”“Yes, Princess.” Marina stepped back before she turned along with the other four maids.“What are you up to?” Agni stared at her eyes as if he saw through there the dangerous things she did.Tzeitel looked down. “What do you mean? Come in. So many prying eyes around.”“Do you think I will not notice how restless the imperial armies are around the estate? I sneaked to the nearest military camp; everyone seemed to be in chaos searching for something. I know how schem
DESPITE the current predicament of the Elsher Estate losing their precious captive, the marriage alliance between Cariux and the third princess still pushed through. The noble feast was held a day before the wedding, and several members of the imperial family had come to Kaitseri, including King Malik.Princess Tzeitel pretended to warmly welcome her family. Her two older sisters came to her just to assert their dominance since, just like her, they were married off to the powerful families to support the empire.“I can’t believe our youngest legitimate sister is getting married now,” Princess Gweyr giggled. She was the first princess. She came along with their second sister, Princess Eletha. They were in the receiving hall, and all the ladies from aristocratic families had gathered there, and some of them showcased their music skills. The festive sounds reverberated around.Eletha playfully touched Tzeitel’s hair. &ld
SURV Elsher gathered all the members of the family in the private hall of his residence to discuss their current dilemma. His old face was fuming in anger and scolding everyone.“Father, calm down!” Lord Filus tried to pacify the Elsher patriarch. “It already happened. An ordinary person could not even set foot in this estate, let alone abduct our source of healing power.”“What are you trying to say, Filus? If you were not so lax around here, this would not have happened!” Surv pointed his finger to his eldest son. “If that creature managed to return to Hanum, how would we answer to the empire?”“We control a military might in the North, we have the strongest armies. Who would dare to provoke us? I heard the intruder used an advanced technique of portal magic. Only Iridessa is capable of doing it.” Lord Filus sounded calm.Surv gritted his teeth. “A mere rebel dared to trespa
TZEITEL observed the three of the Elsher siblings gathered in the courtyard of the main house, drinking in celebration for the upcoming wedding, which would be held in two days. Using her portal magic, she could hear their conversation from a distance. Hidden on the roof of her villa, she prepared to return to the forbidden dungeon.“How’s the feeling of tying the knot, little brother? I heard Grandfather punished you the other day for having a tryst with your lover. How brave you are to disobey our elders while you're with the third imperial princess!” Fenton laughed as he teased Cariux. He raised his wine glass and clicked it to Halix’s glass.Halix chuckled upon hearing the words of their oldest brother. “I can’t believe you’re this immature, brother. You're carrying this duty, a task specifically given to you. You can’t mess this up.”Cariux chugged his wine. “Am I not fulfilling my du
TIEDUS reinforced the water bubble while Pearlie tended to Damien, who was still unconscious. They were traveling southward, holding out not to use their last resort to swim, as it could easily lead to their demise. “Captain Winward will kill us if he finds out we left the lieutenant to die,” Pearlie’s body trembled, remembering Hisila’s sacrifice. “The dead will remain dead. Why would we drown ourselves in regret? It’s useless! This is war, Princess. Thousands of lives will be the collateral. And now we have no choice but to cross the Lightning Sea. Maybe it’ll be our turn to die next.”“I know,” Pearlie gazed down. “Perhaps I’m too young to understand these things.”“Don’t worry, I’ll make sure you reach Advani safely.” Tiedus strengthened his resolve, knowing the very low probability of survival. Crossing the Lightning Sea was a suicide. The water bubble came to a halt for a moment as they witnessed the sudden change of turbulent rift in the water from a distance. The roar of thu
BAHARINI quickly checked Hisila’s pulse, praying that she could feel even a faint throb, but there was none. It was difficult for her to accept that the lieutenant had already passed away. Silently, she blamed herself for her immaturity; had she heeded Kafle's advice to avoid wasting time in the pit, she might have avoided capture. This tragedy may not have fallen on Hisila if they had followed their plan.“She’s gone,” Baharini’s voice cracked. “It's my fault.”Kafle did not say a word. He looked around to check if he could find Damien and the others, but they weren't there. “We need to keep going,” Kafle said as his face was void of expression. Baharini turned to wipe her tears. She gazed down at Ethros, who seemed frozen on the ground. “Can we give her a proper send-off?” The princess suggested. “I'm afraid we don't have time. Our enemies are approaching. I can't risk your life.” Kafle had to make a hard choice, knowing time was of the essence.Jie finally came to his senses. H
ISLAND OF ASTRAEAIRIDESSA kept pointing to the island of Kaitseri on the map as she conversed with her deputy chief inside the war room. They had just finished discussing war strategies with other officials a while ago since the grand fleet of the Empire initiated an attack on the West Astraean shore.“Aren’t you worried we might lose this main base?” Nacht mused. He crossed his arms as he studied the cold expression of the liberalist chief.“You’re not helping, Nacht.” Iridessa heaved a sigh.“Take it easy, Chief. We’ll find a way to save your adoptive daughter.” Nacht teased her again.Iridessa rolled his eyes. “Tzeitel can fend on her own. I’m just waiting for her report.”“Her wedding is approaching. With the Elshers keeping her hostage, how can we guarantee her safety?”Iridessa scoffed. “Worry about your kids, Nacht. If you are not too foo
