AS NYSSA continued to speak incomprehensible incantations, plants sprouted from the ground. It grew so fast that it immediately bore fruit. The cave was suddenly filled with different fruit-bearing plants and trees.
“Holy shit!” Jie was astounded by what he had just witnessed.
The unexpected growth of greenery outside their lair appeared to have stunned even the dragon in its slumber. It persisted for a short while, altering the scenery entirely.
When the villagers became conscious again and saw Nyssa, they rushed forward and bowed down as if she were a deity.
“The goddess!” a villager almost cried as he exclaimed. He quickly grabbed a fruit near him and ate it.
The cave rocked hard, and some had lost their footing. Nyssa continued to levitate and motion her hands. Suddenly, the familiar roar of the dragon resting atop it echoed. It hung around a few times until it landed on the main entrance of the cave.
Unlike before, when the creature was wild and untamed, it appeared menacing. Now it looked curious, staring at Nyssa.
Aelec and the hunting team prepared themselves to defend, just in case the fire breather became aggressive.
“Take it easy. I don’t think it will attack. Look at its eyes.” Jie weighed his decision to stop his companions or if he would just let them. However, based on his observations, the beast seemed to be attracted to Nyssa’s magic.
Jie was right. It was not long before the dragon bent its massive feet as if bowing down to Nyssa.
Meanwhile, Nyssa, who seemed oblivious to her surroundings, persisted with her chant as she slowly soared towards the dragon.
Everyone gasped when Nysa patted its head as if she had already tamed it. Then it growled and went back to its feet as it stepped backward and flew up in the sky.
The ground shook again, more violently than before. It continued for several minutes until it stopped, but Nyssa passed out. If Jie hadn’t been fast enough, the little girl would’ve fallen hard to the ground.
“Nyssa!” Jie lightly tapped her plump cheek.
Kali and Tarian rushed to check on Nyssa.
“She’s just unconscious. But her vitals are stable,” Tarian said after checking her pulse.
Kali was still taken aback by Nyssa’s extraordinary magic. She gazed around the cave, full of edible fruits.
“I didn’t believe it when Nyssa told me she acquired a magical orb accidentally. And it’s so strong!” Kali exclaimed.
“Yes, it’s so strong that her small body could not hold it. Please let her rest somewhere safe,” Tarian requested.
Jie put her down on a soft bush that was a little elevated. The blue fireflies swarmed above Nyssa again.
“Please look after my sister. We will just check the vicinity outside this cave.” Jie stood and turned to Aelec. “Let’s do some reconnaissance.”
Aelec nodded. “Sure!”
“I’ll come with you!” Finn hurriedly ran towards the two. “Magic is amazing, isn’t it? I wonder if I’m lucky enough to be a holder of even a minor magical orb.”
The three young girls, who were eager to see the stars before, came to them as well. They were cousins named Aundre, Yera, and Trada. They all had distinctive tangerine-colored hair.
“Can we go after you check if it’s safe? We’re dying to see the sky outside,” Aundre said.
Aelec veered toward the girls. “You may, but it’s not guaranteed.”
The three scowled at him.
Jie and his companions went out of the cavern. It was already nighttime, and they were still wary of the dragon’s fire strike. Fortunately, it appeared that Nyssa had succeeded in taming the beast. It drifted around but did not attack. They waited until it went back to its nest.
“Oh, goddess! What kind of sorcery has she acquired that is capable of this?” Finn could not believe his eyes.
Although Jie was equally surprised, he didn’t show emotion. Just like Finn, he also wondered what sort of orb could perform a miracle of this kind.
“Everything shifted,” Jie murmured.
Everyone gasped as they witnessed the spectacular changes. The landscape outside was altered. Different kinds of trees stood mightily around the rock formations, creating a dense forest. A lake was also formed, coming from a waterfall.
The same blue fireflies swirled above the lake. For Jie, it was the definition of magical. A series of vegetation was planted around, and everything bore fruits and colorful flowers. Luminous, multi-colored butterflies could be seen around, as if enjoying the sweet nectar of the rare flowers on every side.
“How is this even possible?!” Herlan and Zuri couldn’t contain their excitement.
Jie continued to carefully examine the area for a possible threat. Even though he was also speechless about the sudden change in the surroundings, he managed to stay rational.
“I bet Nyssa obtained more than just an ordinary orb,” Aelec said while gazing around. “It appears she couldn’t wield it yet, which resulted in this, and the consequence exhausted her small body.”
“Magic, indeed.” Jie breathed out. “Aelec, can you teach Nyssa how to harness her power? While she could be helpful for our survival, it’s evident that magic would take a toll on her health. There must be a way to wield it without this kind of drawback.”
“I wish I could help. But my knowledge about magic is very limited. We Ardhians only relied on our physical strength.” Aelec sauntered to continue his survey. “This small forest is abundant in food; if we could stabilize the outside threat, we could live here in peace.”
“How about we find someone who can teach Nyssa to properly wield her magic?” Jie thought. He was sure that there must be that kind of person in this world.
“The surface world is vast. According to what I heard from the village chief, the surface was divided into several islands after the great catastrophe.”
“Interesting, an archipelago.” Jie nodded his head and added, “We must scale the entire desert as soon as possible. I’m starting to wonder if this is an isolated island because we have not encountered even a single human being aside from us.”
“I share your sentiment. If you still have your memories, then you’d understand why we are all ignorant about the surface. Our ancestors kept us isolated, maybe for a reason.”
Jie chuckled. “Isolated for what? To be food for those monsters?”
Aelec did not say a word. He kept on studying the new landscape around them.
WHILE inside the cave, Kali lets Tarian check on Nyssa. However, the apothecary seemed disturbed.
“What’s the matter, Tarian? Is she all right?” Kali checked Nyssa’s pulse on her wrist; it was steady yet very slow.
“The magic has drained her energy. I’m worried about whether her body can withstand it.” Tarian gazed down.
“I’m sure she will. Maybe her magic can help.” Kali remained optimistic even though Nyssa’s condition seemed worse than she imagined.
Tarian heaved a weary sigh. “If only our people were taught about magic, our knowledge wouldn’t be limited like this.”
“It is what it is, Tarian. Let’s do our best to help Nyssa. She had been sick since she was born. Look at her, she’s already nine but her body seemed to be of a seven-year-old.”
Tarian nodded and gently held Nyssa’s pale face. She wished her knowledge of medicine would be enough to cure her.
It was not long before Ethros and the hunting team got back. Finn’s face radiated exhilaration as he greeted the three girls, who were patiently waiting.
“It’s safe outside, and it’s so magical!” Finn’s eyes couldn’t hide his emotions. “You all deserve to see it!”
The girls restrained themselves because they were waiting for Aelec and Ethros’ go signal.
Aelec spoke. “It is safe... for now. You can see and watch the night sky, but with guards. We can’t be complacent in this hostile environment.”
“Aelec is right. Always take extra precautions,” Ethros said. He came to his sister in haste after he noticed that Nyssa’s skin was still pale and almost translucent.
The girls went out with Finn and the others. Kali had no choice but to watch everyone, unsure if Nyssa’s magic was a miracle or a curse.
“Can she make it?” Ethros worriedly asked the apothecary.
Tarian lowered her gaze. “Her condition is critical.”
TERRA ISLAND One kingdom in the east was on the verge of crumbling because of an unforeseen attack. Inside the council chambers, the elders who held prominent positions in the estate were in a heated argument. They were all seated on an enormous oval table. “This is unacceptable! It had been weeks since the prince died, and yet you couldn’t find traces of the remains of his magic.” It was Rangye, a man in his fifties, who served as an adviser to the ailing king. He was scolding Mord, the general of the army. “My apologies, we are trying our best—” “Try harder, General! Once the news about these spreads out in the archipelago, this island will cease to exist.” Rangye’s face was red, fuming in anger. “Rangye, don’t lose your cool. Why blame General Mord for your negligence?” Another elder with long white hair mused. He was Embir, the king’s brother. “Embir is right. You’re the one tasked with overseeing the prince’s progress, yet you failed to notice that one of his guards had been
SIX MONTHS LATER Jie stood dumbfounded on a nearby shore, observing the surging of the waves as big and high as the skyscrapers where he came from. “I knew it!” he cursed in silence. It had been months since he was transmigrated into this world, and all the questions that bogged him were still left unanswered. Although he tried his best to strengthen himself, especially since they kept surveying the entire desert to draw a map. Now he just confirmed that they were on a massive, isolated island surrounded by raging waves that were impossible for a ship to cross. “We finally have the map of this island,” Aelec said, looking around. “And we’re the only humans here, aside from the handful of desert monsters on the surface.” “I can even see sea beasts swimming in the waves!” Finn pointed out his finger. Everyone saw them as well. “What’s your plan now, Ethros?” Aelec’s eyes were questioning. Jie heaved a sigh and glanced up at the sky. “Those who want to leave this island will have
THE leader of the dragon riders ordered his men to land, and before Jie could think properly, they were all on the ground with their weapons aimed at them. “We will kill everyone if you don’t surrender the holder of the Creation Orb!” The leader gestured with his hand, and suddenly, a red flame materialized from his palm. Jie swallowed in silence. He could hear his loud heartbeat, but he still held his head high. It wouldn’t hurt if he tried to negotiate. “Let me talk to him.” Jie strolled past Aelec. “Be careful, but I trust you. Only you can handle them.” Aelec was so serious that Jie’s jaw almost dropped. Why did this man trust him so much? If it was hand-to-hand combat, Jie was confident he’d surely have an edge in a fight. But these men looked menacing, especially when their beast appeared tamed. How was it even possible? “We don’t know what you’re talking about. We are just a small village trying to survive under these harsh conditions on the island.” Jie sauntered toward t
AMIDST the busy capital city of Vatre, the Idhair Guild was celebrating their successful retrieval mission. Commander Semme let himself relax while drinking his favorite beer. “Commander, are you certain that the human child is the new holder of the creation orb?” Xeric asked. They were at one table while the others were drowning themselves in alcohol. Among everyone, the lieutenant appeared so wasted for drinking too much that his monocle was out of place. Semme chugged his beer. “My mana detection has never failed. Among those savages, that girl was emitting a very strong energy that can intimidate anybody if properly harnessed.” “Aren’t you wondering as to why the Luominen chose a little girl? She’s not even of royal status!” Xeric clicked his tongue and drank from his mug. “Sometimes the logic of this world is strange. Isn’t it?” Semme took a deep breath. “That’s also a mystery to me. But it doesn’t matter; at least we succeeded on Taftani’s given quest, although we took that l
KAFLE was amused to see him rant. "I'm surprised you don't know about it." Shock crossed Jie’s face. “Is there such a thing? I knew that guy did something nasty!” He remembered the commander who kidnapped Nyssa. “It seemed you had no idea how magic works.” Kafle appeared puzzled. “Every citizen of the Learaf Archipelago can wield magic. However, it isn’t as strong when you’re a royal. Since they possessed the mother orbs.” “Learaf Archipelago?” It caught Jie’s attention. Now would be the perfect time to know more about this world. Kafle surely knew many things that the Ardhians did not. Kafle did not conceal how perplexed he was. “Tell me, young boy. Are you from an isolated tribe since you seemed shocked to learn about the Shackle Curse?” “If I told you I came from another world, would you believe me?” Jie chuckled. Kafle shook his shoulders. “Anything is possible.” Jie gaped at the elf. “Seriously? Do you know how I can travel back?” The elf tapped his arm. “I’m just k
TAFTANI gazed intensely at the crystal full of green luminous liquid as if it were a state of the art. He was proud of himself since they successfully retrieved the Creation Orb, and it would not be long for it to be in their possession. Once the new holder lost her will to live, the orb would be transferred to the empty round casket he made.Nyssa was inside the crystal; at a glance, one would think she was in peaceful slumber. But it was the complete opposite. For the young girl, every apparatus connected to her body that was meant to extract the power of the orb brought excruciating pain. The scream that wanted to come through Nyssa’s throat was muffled by a mask covering her mouth. She could not explain the searing torment that went through every vein in her body. She was stripped of her clothes as soon as she was brought into this chamber.Brother, I will wait for you... Tears cascaded down Nyssa’s cheek that couldn’t be seen because of the green liquid.I want to live… She had a
AWAKEN with the sensation of a gentle touch to his wounded back. Jie felt it was soothing, yet he couldn't move his body.“Ouch!” he grunted.“Stay put. Izora is healing your injuries.” Kafle held Jie’s shoulder to prevent him from moving.“Thank god, I'm still alive.” Jie let out a sigh of relief. But he grimaced in pain with just a slight movement. He was lying on a thin mat on the cold floor. The three of them were inside a small cell, and scent was tolerable compared to the first chamber he was brought into.“You’re barely alive,” Kafle faced his daughter. “How's his healing progress?”The little elf shook her head. “Not good. But the healing orb I have is enough to stop the bleeding.”Jie gaped at the child. “You got a healing orb and didn't surrender it to the guards?!”The young elf glared at him and whispered. “Ungrateful bastard!”“Hey, kid! Watch your mouth. I'm older than you.” Jie again felt the searing pain in his back.Izora rolled her eyes. “Dimwit!”“Kafle, teach your
JIE voluntarily surrendered himself at night when he couldn’t mine an orb. He toughened himself despite seeing dead bodies around him; some were severely injured from the flogging while the others were being carried in the stretchers coming from the arena and going to the iron lift descending to the depths of Dreqin.“Ethros, please don’t do it.” Kafle persisted in persuading him, knowing his idea was suicide.Jie silently swallowed. His decision was firm. He’d rather take his chances to see what the fight was all about. Aside from his curiosity, it was his way of making penance because he couldn’t save Nyssa, no matter how hard he tried.“If I get killed, please tell my sister what happened here.”“Ethros…”“But I'll make sure to stay alive, so I'll be the one to tell her. That sounds better, isn’t it?” He stepped down the stairs and strolled towards the fighting chamber.Kafle could see that he was determined. The elf carried his daughter and scurried behind the young man.“Be caref
