CHAPTER 3- The Rookie Detective

Rachael's POV

I stared down at the mug of coffee sitting on my table. I picked up the air conditioning remote and pressed a button.

Wrapping myself with my hands, I shivered. Not at the chilly air in my room, but the current situation at hand.

Today, staring at those bodies only brought painful memories, from the past.

Everyone in the family had thought it was stupid of me to want to be a cop when there were many other careers I could pursue.

In fact, we had a family business where I could work and have millions flood my account every week but then......

The strong will power to make sure no one was unjustly killed like my mother, helped keep me focus.

I was eight while my older sister was eleven when our mother had died.

Before then, she fell really ill and was admitted in the city's Local hospital. Things became even tougher when our father divorced her on her sick bed.

I still hate him for that though.

Luck found us when she started getting better. My sister was happy she wouldn't have to visit the hospital again and take the harsh treatment of our family relatives for handling the hospital bills.

But as for me, I was happy to have my mother back. I could sleep in her warm embrace again.

The next day after school, I went with my sister, in my aunt's car, to visit my mother, only to be told the sad news of her death.

I yelled out a million questions, pulling the tall doctor by his white coat.

He had pet me that day, promising to get the police involved.

I so wanted to know how she had possibly died. I mean, we had visited her the night before and she was better than perfect.

We later got to know that someone had tampered with her air pump and she had suffocated to death for lack of oxygen.

I was mad with rage. I had never felt so angry in my life.

Who would want to hurt someone like my mother?

Someone so dear, kind and loving.

Just who?

The police waved off the case, saying it might have been some sort of accident.

They didn't seem the least interested in that case, just like Dolores.

My mother had been unjustly killed and the police didn't come to bring justice to her death.

Instead, they warded us off.

For this reason, I decided to become a cop, to help the less privilege. Those who didn't have the power, authority and influence to command the attention of the cops.

Someone must have had a reason for intentionally killing my mother. Whoever has killed these two women, must have a reason for doing so too.

" Damn." I sighed, resting my back on the chair.

For over twelve years already, I couldn't find a reason as to why whoever would kill my mother.

Just how am I going to find that killer(s) reason for brutally killing these women.

I want to solve this case, I need to catch this killer before he kills anyone else, if we're dealing with a serial killer.

I hadn't been able to gather some evidences, to prove to Dolores that we were dealing with a serial killer and someone else's life might be in danger.

The second victim didn't even have neighbours we could interrogate.

This would even be more difficult.

Whoever was killing these people, was really smart.

Judging from what Tina's neighbor's had said about her recent behavior before her death, she had definitely known about her death.

I picked up my marker and walked to the interrogation board in my room.

" The mind. " I wrote boldly at the top right side.

I drawed an arrow under which I wrote " day of the death."

Tina was reported to have been laughing too loudly in stores and speaking to herself.

What if the killer had been stalking her and she had known about it?

What if he just wanted Tina to be mentally unprepared when he attacked?

I so wanted to work with this theory of mine but then, a part of me felt like this wasn't the right theory to use.

What if it wasn't the same for the second victim?

Shit!

This case is more frustrating than I had anticipated.

Why did he even think of killing his victims like this?

Was he trying to pass a message?

What was he driving at?

My thoughts were interrupted by the creak of the bathroom door.

I twisted my body to stare at my boyfriend who had just taken his bath.

" Hey." Christian cooed, walking toward me, clad only in his towel.

" Hi." I managed to smile at him, rising to my feet.

He leaned toward me and placed a quick kiss on my lips before hugging me.

I rose on my toes, wrapping my hands around his wet body.

" Does it still bother you?" He asked me, rubbing my back.

" Of course it does Chris. Why should any human be killed like that?" I sighed,my hands dropping from his back.

" So far, any progress?" He asked, disengaging from the hug and walking to the closet.

" We didn't even have a lead on the first case before the second dropped right on our plate." I yawned, falling to the bed.

" Maybe there's something y'all are just not doing." He said, buttoning his shirt.

Maybe it was because of how chilly the room was tonight, but I also wanted to wear one of Christian's shirt.

" Dolores owns the case. There's nothing I can do."

I hated that I had to follow her command.

" Do you have to tell her everything you do about the case?" Christian asked, hovering over me.

I sat up immediately; " No?"

I didn't have to tell her everything,or anything.

" Babe, I think you should go out of your way. What matters is that the case is solved, right? You don't have to sit around and wait for Dolores to make a move." Christian said, playing with my hair.

He was right!

Very right!

I don't need to wait for Dolores to make a move so I could follow suit, I could make my move as long as this case is solved.

" Oh my goodness! That's so right Chris! Gosh! Why did I wait this long?" I face palmed myself.

" Better late than never." Chris responded.

" So what's gonna be your move now?" He asked, staring at me with his puppy brown eyes.

" I have to know if this killer left something behind. You know, something I could use to track him down."

" I'm going to the last crime scene."
