The next day. When Andres was talking with the manager of a Myers’ store, four masked guys knocked the guard unconscious, burst into the store and stole costly products. Andres attacked them even though they had knives, but they used their knives effectively and made sure to leave unscathed. Andres couldn’t even complain to the police because he realized that it was the same four guys he had made a deal with. But it didn’t stop there. When Andres went to the restaurant for lunch, the same four guys sat at a different table, wearing mouth masks and focusing not on food but on him. “I gave three thousand dollars to these fuckers,” Andres gritted his teeth. “Instead of being grateful, they want to intimidate me like this, probably for demanding more money. Charles woke up in the middle of the night, sweating and huffing. It was another nightmare, but he was the one doing the killing. He had taken sleeping pills already, but they clearly didn’t have any effect. He was able to fall asleep when he wasn’t even trying during the daytime, but he wasn’t able to sleep properly at night when he was trying his best to sleep. All this was quite irritating if not unsettling. At this point, he felt like he shouldn’t call himself a murderer anymore because he had killed too many people for whatever reason. His conscience didn’t allow him to justify his actions, let alone see himself as innocent. “Once I get my revenge… I’ll just jump from a cliff.” He told himself. “Yeah, that’s the only thing that can stop the monster in me.” A second of silence, and he doubted himself. “Jumping from a cliff will kill me, right?” He walked out of the apartment. Sophie was sipping the beer alone, as Charles had left a couple of minutes ago. She looked somewhat sad and also felt regretful. “It was the most meaningful conversation I had with someone in a long while. I should have at least taken his number. I should have persuaded him more. Even if he seemed eight or nine years older than me, I’m fine with it.” “Not only is he handsome and brave, but he’s also got a character.” She put her hands under chin and exhaled. “I want a husband like him. Her lifeless eyes were looking right at the entrance, where he stood. Her eyes were still open from the shock. There was no life in her eyes. Her heart had also stopped beating. There was no saving her. He remembered her talk with her, and it was her who made him wear the cape and mask and told him he looked good. Though he didn’t give her his number when she had asked him, he hoped she would find a partner who would take good care of her. Now, he felt like a fool. Clenching fists, he went up to her, squatted down and closed her eyes. “I’m sorry, Sophie. If only I took things more seriously…” If only he had acted when the Four Harassers had tried to kill him, this wouldn’t have happened. As for the deaths that had taken place on the streets, the blame was put on the terrorists. However, there wasn’t a single mention of the man in a red mask and a cape, neither on the television nor in the newspapers. In a random church, an old pastor was giving his Sunday speech. “All people are flawed, but some are deeply flawed, and these people make relationships suffocating. For instance, take those whose understanding of love is very limited. They will stick to you if you take them shopping and buy them things, but when you stop giving them what they want, they won't ever let you come near them. Unfortunately, these kind of deeply-flawed people make the same mistake over and over again, some knowingly and some unknowingly. What should you do if you’re in a relationship with such a person? A classy BMW stopped, and a tall Croatian actress gracefully stepped out and tossed the keys into the hands of a valet and swanned her way into the luxury restaurant. “It’s Sofia Bacic!” even the rich customers who frequented the restaurant were surprised. The workers also murmured. “Isn’t she the model who made millions from her sex tape years ago?” Sofia sat at a table and waited. “Who’s she waiting for?” many wondered. Charles was also looking at her with a rigid expression, but when Laurel entered the scene, he stood and smiled before sitting at the same time she did. “You didn’t order anything?” she asked, as the table was empty. “Ladies first,” he replied, slightly tilting his head. She chuckled. “Alright.” She then ordered over a dozen top-quality items for both of them. Charles returned to his room and rested on his bed. His heart was beating slowly and heavily. A shade of gloom covered his face. Just after the lunch had finished, Laurel gave him an envelope. He opened it. There were pictures of Sofia meeting other guys at various restaurants and clubs. That was a shocker for him, even though he knew what type of woman she was. “She’s been doing this for months,” Laurel said, almost in a pitying tone, “and you’re just one of the many. I’ve heard that her husband also ran away, though they tell the world a different story.” Laurel’s words deeply hurt his heart as well as his pride. He felt foolish for thinking he could already be Sofia’s priority given how she came after him. “I didn’t want to show you this right now,” Laurel continued, “but I wanted you to know how most of the rich women are. I’m different, though. I’m seeking for that one person I know I should adjust with and put some of my comforts aside if necessary, but I doubt Sofia comes

Sofia had always put Carlos through physical and mental abuse. Moreover, she had the audacity to say ‘Whatever you’re going through, I’m going through worse after marrying you.’ He used to be an alpha of sorts, but her lies and manipulation repeated often enough ended up dissolving his confidence as if it was never there to begin with. His heart had slowly eroded after marriage. It might never fully recover again, but right now, Carlos was on the mission to get it back on the right track.
