“Me and my mother demand that you give us an additional €300,000.”

In Oakheart City, ten years ago, Ezekiele Moretti was disowned by his family. They cut off all ties with him and threw him into prison. Dejected and forsaken, Ezekiele had no choice but to serve a sentence for a crime he didn’t commit. Fast forward to years later, he came out and, with no one to turn to for help, started to rebuild his life.

Starting from scratch, he painstakingly worked his way back up and was now a Great Marshal, respected and revered by many, with a massive amount of wealth.

But the thing was, although people knew of the Great Marshal, not a lot of people could put a face to the name. Apart from his close contacts, everyone else knew him by the fake alias he created, Ezekiele Moretti. They had no idea of his real identity.

Keeping it a secret was deliberate. Ezekiele’s plan? To pay back all the people who made an impact in his life, whether positively or negatively.

Number one on the positive list was Emilia.

In the darkest days of his life, she suddenly appeared, giving him the much needed strength that allowed Ezekiele to pick himself up. For that reason, he vowed that he would love and cherish her all the days of his life. Now he was about to marry her. What he didn’t expect was that she would turn out to be so materialistic.

From his dressing room, the sound of the hired band playing the wedding song could be heard, but he couldn’t focus on that joyful sound because Emilia stood in front of him, glaring at him with her arms crossed. Standing next to her was her mother, Maddalena, wearing a similar expression.

“An additional €300,000?” Ezekiele’s eyebrow went up in surprise.

Not too long ago, he’d given that very amount to Emilia and her mother as dowry. There had been no complaints then, so he wondered why they were asking for more. Ezekiele watched Emilia carefully, sensing a shift in her attitude.

“Why do you need the additional money? I asked you to wait until we got married, then I would show you all the wealth. Don’t you trust me anymore?”

Emilia and her mother exchanged looks, then both women scoffed at the same time.

“Nevermind all of that, Ezekiele.” Under his gaze, Emilia’s sour expression changed to a smile. “Well, if you must know…The Great Marshal’s Comeback Ceremony is in a matter of weeks. My mother and I need to buy new clothes now that our reputation in the society is about to rise. Heaven forbid we wear the same old clothes to the ceremony!”

After Emilia finished speaking, Ezekiele didn’t say anything. He was thinking. The Great Marshal Comeback Ceremony was an event he planned to officially reveal his identity to the world. Of course, he’d given Emilia an invitation because she was about to become his wife. He was going to reveal it especially for her sake, but now he was a bit taken aback at the change in her attitude.

“Isn’t that wasteful? I’m sure the Great Marshal won’t notice if you wear new clothes to his ceremony,” Ezekiele said these words, hoping she would change her mind.

What he got in response was a sneer from Emilia. She and her mother, Maddalena, mocked Ezekiele with a laugh.

“What would you know about class? Even if the Great Marshal doesn’t notice, there’s bound to be other important guests, who will definitely do.” Emilia explained in a condescending voice. “Anyway, you have no right to speak because you weren’t even worthy to receive an invitation from the Great Marshal.”

Again, Ezekiele didn’t respond. He stared at his bride-to-be for a number of seconds, until a voice interrupted him. It was a voice that had remained quiet all the while they were speaking.

“Emilia, you shouldn’t act this way.” The voice belonged to Lucia, Emilia’s bridesmaid. “Ezekiele is right. Buying new clothes to attend the ceremony seems wasteful. Moreover, if you need to have this conversation, have it after the wedding. The guests have been waiting for a long time now.”

Ezekiele didn’t know much about Lucia—He only knew her as someone who acted timid around Emilia—but he was grateful for her coming to his defense. He was about to thank her when he heard a loud sound. Emilia had just slapped Lucia!

“Shut up, you!” In truth, Emilia held no fondness for Lucia. The reason she kept her around was due to the fact that Lucia never went against her words. She was usually obedient, just the way Emilia preferred. “What do you know?” An ugly expression crowned Emilia’s beautiful features.

A hand to her face, Lucia didn’t say anything.

“As a matter of fact, take back this piece of junk you gave me!” Reaching for the necklace hanging around her neck, Emilia pulled it off with great force, and hurled it at her bridesmaid. “I only kept you around because I pitied you!”

Emilia was still droning on, but Ezekiel had long stopped listening. His eyes were locked on the ‘piece of junk’ Emilia threw at Lucia, which was now on the ground.

Years ago, when he first met Emilia, he gave her a jade pendant so that he would recognize her when they met again!

Quietly, he bent at the waist and picked up the pendant. “Who do you say this belongs to?” His question wasn’t directed to anyone in particular, but Emilia was quick to answer.

“Lucia gave it to me as a sign of her loyalty to me.” A scoff followed Emilia’s words. “But it’s just trash. Not worth anything at all!”

“It’s not trash,” Lucia protested quietly, not daring to raise her voice at Emilia.

In the midst of this, none of the women in the room noticed that Ezekiele’s face had turned white. The reason he asked Emilia to marry him was because he recognized the pendant as the one that inspired him to rebuild his life. He didn’t expect that it was the wrong woman.

All these while, he thought she was the owner, but he couldn’t be more wrong. No, it wasn’t Emilia who helped him all those years ago, it was Lucia!

Ezekiele was only now realizing the mistake he almost made. And he had Emilia to thank for that. If it hadn’t been for Emilia and her mother asking for a higher dowry just now, Ezekiele would have married her without knowing the truth of the matter! For five years, he’d doted on Emilia and loved her dearly, but that had been a mistake. “Lucia, can you confirm that this pendant is yours?”Still looking terrified, and having a hand covering the spot on her face that Emilia slapped, Lucia was scared to look up at Ezekiele, but she responded with, “Ye-Yes…Yes, the jade pendant belongs to me.”Ezekiele’s eyes lingered on the trembling woman for a couple seconds before moving into action. Without much ado, he turned at Emilia, who was still seething, and it was like the veil covering his eyes had finally been removed. Exhaling a deep breath, he addressed Emilia and her mother. “I almost made a costly mistake, but thanks to you, Emilia, I didn’t. With that said, from this moment, I’m call

How did Father have a heart attack?” Hearing those panic-stricken words from Lucia, Ezekiele quickly turned to look at her. “This is all because of you!” Anna yelled at her daughter through the phone. It happened like this. She and her husband, Daniele, had been hosting some friends for lunch. Naturally, they were bragging about how their daughter, Lucia, was going to marry Giacomo Hamiliton, a wealthy man, very soon, when a neighbor ran in suddenly asking if they’d seen the news. As it would turn out, their daughter had suddenly gotten married to a nobody! Unable to bear the news, Daniele slumped from heart failure. “We’re on the way to the hospital right now. Meet me there!”Before Lucia could respond to her mother, the older woman hung up. The phone fell from Lucia’s ear, hitting the floor of the car with a loud thud. “My father…My father

“Listen, Lucia, I can help your father, but you also need to do me a favor, don’t you think?”Lucia froze inwardly at Giacomo’s insinuation, but she didn’t make any reaction on the outside so as not to alert her mother. For the entire time they’d been engaged, which was less than six months, Giacomo had always made it clear what he wanted from her the most: her body. Lucia was fully convinced that the reason he remained engaged to her for so long was that. Confirming her words, Giacomo continued, “I’m at Palace Hotel for a meeting I have with clients in the evening. If you agree to spend the night with me, I’ll send a driver to pick you up.” The truth was Giacomo had no intention of helping Lucia’s father. It was as Lucia thought. Why he stayed engaged to her was not because her family had anything to offer him. Well, they had one thing, a pretty daughter who made Giacomo’s blood boil with want. He was never going to marry Lucia. Even now, after getting what he wanted from her, he

“It can’t be!” One glance was all Anna spared Ezekiele before she willed herself to forget his existence. There was no way that man saved her husband’s life. How could it be when he wasn’t even a doctor. Moreover, it had to be Giacomo’s doing. “Right, Lucia? You called Giacomo not long ago, so it had to be him.”“Giacomo?” The hospital director perked up at that name. “Do you mean Giacomo Hamilton? That’s impossible! I watched Master,” he gestured at Ezekiele, “himself carry out the operation. I believe your husband can attest to this too.” At his words, Anna faced Daniele. Her eyes seemed to be pleading with him to refute the hospital director’s words. “No way. Lucia, call Giacomo this instant. Let’s get to the bottom of this!”Even before her mother gave the order, Lucia had begun to dial her ex-fiance’s number. Four pairs of eyes waited in anticipation. When the call connected, Lucia put it on speaker. “Hello, Giacomo, my father’s operation was successful and he has woken up. T

As Emilia watched, she grew green with jealousy. Was Ezekiele such a gem? If he was, then she couldn’t possibly let him go like that. She had to find a way to turn the tables around. “Ezekiele, dear.” In front of everyone, Emilia rushed to Ezekiele, wrapping her hands around him in a tender embrace. “If I had known you were like this, I would never have let you go. Can’t you forgive my mother this once? Instead of this nobody, why don’t you make her the hospital director?” Lucy felt her heart pierce as she watched the two of them, but Ezekiele remained unfazed. Prying Emilia away from his body, he moved so that he was standing next to Lucia, showing ownership. “Did you forget that I’m married to Lucia?” Ezekiele asked in a voice so cold, it put shivers in the hearts of everyone who heard it. Not one to back down easily, Emilia forced on a fake smile. “Back at the wedding hall, I might have said a few things that I regret, but you did the same. You can have me back, all you need t

Back in the hospital, a couple minutes after Lucia and Ezekiele took their leave, Emilia stormed out with angry steps. Before she reached her car, she was already dialing a number. “What is it?” A bored voice answered. It was Giacomo. He and Emilia had been working together for quite some time now. Emilia was impatient as she asked, “Have you done what I asked? Have you withdrawn the contract from that witch’s steel mill?” She was referring to Lucia. “Of course. I did that as soon as you called me. And I also spread the word to others. By now, I don’t think she should have any more customers.” Giacomo’s voice was full of glee as he explained it to Emilia. “Hmm.” Hearing that, Emilia’s anger was abated briefly, but as the memory of Ezekiele defending Lucia came to mind, her anger was rekindled. It wouldn’t be enough to simply ruin Lucia’s business dealings, she had to destroy the business completely. “There’s another thing we need to do. To end it cleanly, we should make sure she

Seeing the obvious defeat, Emilia didn’t need to be told twice to disappear from the scene. The men Giacomo sent were all muscles and fat, with arms almost five times bigger than hers! So seeing Ezekeile take them out like they were nothing, fear went down Emilia’s spine. Maybe they were much weaker than they looked, Emilia tried to convince herself, but even then, Ezekiele took out ten men!As she drove away to a safe place, Emilia called Giacomo for the second time in two days. “So, how was it?” His sing-song, excited voice made Emilia forget her fear and flare up in anger. “How was it?” It was ridiculous just hearing that! “What kind of men did you send, huh? They’re so weak! Ten of them can’t take out a single man!”“Wait-Wait…” Giacomo seemed to be shuffling around. He was trying to find a quieter place. He

Emilia had long since gotten to her feet and was now scheming. The business agreement with Giacomo didn’t seem to matter as much to her now. There’s no need to pay me more than is due.”Emilia almost scoffed at those silly words from Lucia. If only she knew her eye was now on Ezekiele, then maybe she wouldn’t be so eager to help. Emilia didn’t appreciate Lucia’s kindness. In fact, she detested it. If someone treated Emilia the way she treated Lucia, there was no amount of begging that would make her accept her forgiveness. Was this how she seduced Ezekiele? With the kind act? Emilia wondered, eyeing Lucia with resentment. Lucia didn’t notice this look in Emilia’s eyes, but Ezekiele, who paid close attention to everything, saw it and knew what Emilia was thinking. He was about to burst her bubble. “Now that you’ve gotten what you want

Upon hearing the charges that were brought against him, Ezekiele’s smile widened. He’d suspected that Giacomo would make a move soon, and sure enough, he was using Emilia to do his dirty work. And she looked very happy to be a part of it.Taking his eyes off of Emilia, Ezekiele looked at the unsmiling officer with the gun. “Be careful with that thing. You wouldn’t want to fire it by mistake, huh?”He acted like he didn’t hear, but the other police officer, who opened the door, then proceeded to put handcuffs around Ezekiele’s wrists. A bit overkill since he was already prepared to go with them, Ezekiele thought but didn’t argue.“Ezekiele Moretti, you’re being arrested under the suspicion of sexual and p

Work had begun in full swing, meaning the steel mill was the most active Ezekiele had ever seen it. The covering of the dark night followed Ezekiele as he went out of the Rovings house to the location Giacomo asked to meet at. In ample time, he arrived at a diner at the outskirts of town. At that late hour, the inside was bustling. As Ezekiele walked in, his eyes immediately fell on the table Giacomo was seated at the back of the room. Other than that, he took note of everyone else in order to ascertain whether or not there were any suspicious persons around. The other people seemed to be regular diners, but Ezekiele didn’t let his guard down. When he reached Giacomo’s table, he leisurely pushed back his coat and lowered himself onto the chair opposite with a carefree smile. It was a bit careless of him to be alone, Ezekiele thought as stared at the top of the other man’s head. Anyone just arriving at the scene would never know that he’d slapped someone just moments ago.“You bastard!” Jeremy, having had enough of nursing his bruised cheek and pride, made to rush an attack at Ezekiele. He was only able to move a few seconds before he stopped again with wide, shocked eyes. It was a lot to process, but Anna knew for a fact that Emilia wasn’t going to sit back quietly while a big fish got away from her, and she would try to sabotage Lucia. Anna took it upon herself to make sure that didn’t happen. “What?” Emilia sneered at the older woman. “I still have some questions to ask Ezekiele.”In response, Ezekiele was quick to shut that down. “Emilia, I believe I have answered all your questions, and I’m cert
