NIKAELEON
***
Everyone turned to look at me, but I didn’t give a damn as long as I got Connor’s hands off my woman. I’m sure this was all a big misunderstanding, Uri would never leave me. Connor must have forced her into this.
“I said let her go!” I said again as I walked towards them.
Everyone moved out of my way. Uri looked petrified as I got closer to them, but Connor just smirked. I realised why he was so calm when some security personnels tackled me to the ground. I wanted to wipe that smirk off his face so badly. The old Nik they knew would have been subdued by guards, but not this prison hardened Nik. I punched the first guard that was on top of me on his face and it felt so good to hear his bones crunch because of the force of my punch.
I kicked the second one that was crouched close to my legs and had been trying to cuff my hands and dragged the third one down to headbutt him. People screamed as I battered three more guards, and hearing how afraid they were of me filled me with immense satisfaction.
“How could you betray me like this, Connor? You were my best friend. You have so much, why take the little I had, huh?” I asked as I smashed a vase from a nearby table on another guard’s face.
“Peasants like you don’t deserve more than crumbs, Nik. You should have just agreed to work in my company like I offered you back then, now you have nothing.” Connor said with a smirk.
“We signed an agreement! You lied to me, you took from me, you sent me to jail.”
“You went to jail because you almost murdered a man in cold blood. You’re nothing but a criminal.” He chuckled and I moved forward to grab him, but I suddenly felt excruciating pain radiate through my whole body.
I collapsed to the floor and convulsed as currents of electricity assaulted my cells from the taser gun that Connor had shot at me.
“How does it feel, Nik?” Connor said as he crouched next to me.
“How does it feel to be reduced back to nothing, to be sent back to the streets where you came from. Look at you, dressed in rags and smelling like a dumpster.” He laughed.
“How did it feel to see the woman you love in my arms? We have a daughter by the way, a little bundle of joy. We’re leaving for our honeymoon in a few minutes. How does it feel to know that you’ll spend the night on a cold floor in a cell, while I have your woman in every position known to man on a soft bed in Paris? It was so nice of you to attend our wedding, Nik.”
As l lay on the floor, I suddenly realised that Connor planned this. He knew that I wouldn’t be able to resist coming here. He must have pulled some strings to make sure I was released today.
“Why?” I asked weakly.
I needed to know why he would do this to me when I had never done anything bad to him throughout the years we had been friends.
“Why? I’ve always hated you, Nik. Do you know that my parents loved you more than me? They adored you. You were always so responsible, always at the top of the class, good grades and perfect records. You were the son they wanted. On the other hand, I was the bane of their existence. Nothing I did ever seemed to impress them, so I stopped trying and started planning. My mother was so heartbroken when you were sent to jail, but don’t worry, I put her out of her misery. I duped my old man into willing everything he owned to me, then I killed them both, you should have seen their faces.” He laughed.
The other guests were too far from us to hear him admit to his crimes.
“They looked so surprised like they never would have thought I had the guts to do something like that. But that’s how it has always been, they have always underestimated me, and they paid dearly for it. I almost feel sorry for you, Nik, because you really didn’t wrong me. It was just unfortunate that you stole my parent’s love from me and Uri.”
“Uri is m…”
“She was never yours. I saw her first.” Connor hissed in anger.
Connor wanted to hit Nik, but people were watching so he kept his composure. He didn’t need a scandalous video that would ruin his good public image, it was bad for business.
“I was friends with her first, and you would have never met her if I hadn’t introduced her to you. You stole her from me like you stole my parents' love. "
"I never stole anything from you Connor, you're delusional."
"Now, I’ve taken her back. We’ll build a family together while you rot in jail. I’ll send you back and make sure you stay there for a very long time.” Connor paused in thought.
“In fact, no, I won’t send you to jail. Jail is too good for you, you stayed in there for three years and somehow managed to come out of it looking more handsome than you used to. I’ll leave you as a free man, so it would hurt you more that you can’t do anything to stop me. You’re a nobody, Nik. The earlier you accept it, the better. I was born royalty, you weren’t even wanted by your parents that’s why they dumped you in the garbage as a child. Piece of advice from an old friend, stop trying so hard to be what you’re not.” Connor said as he stood, just as more security guards arrived and picked Nik’s limp body from the floor.
The current from the Taser was no longer running through my body, but I was still weak from the impact.
“Will you press charges, Mr Grant?” One of the reporters that had been allowed to cover the event asked Connor.
Connor sighed like he felt sorry for me and moved closer to Uri to hold her around the waist.
“No.” Connor replied.
“But he’s a criminal, an ex-convict. He attacked you, ruined your wedding, and you’ll just let him go?” The reporter asked incredulously.
The reporter wasn’t the only one taking a video, other guests were recording him too, waiting to hear his reply. Everything was happening just as he planned it.
“Yes, I’ll let him go.” Connor replied with a sad expression.
“Why, Mr Grant?”
“Because, despite what he did in the past, he’s still my friend. We’ve been best friends for a long time. He just got out of prison, I don’t want to send him back to that awful place. He just needs time to heal and adjust. I’m willing to help him in any way that I can, if only he’ll let me. He’s upset with me because he thinks I took from him.”
“That could be said to be true. I mean, you just married his ex-girlfriend. His business is now yours.” The reporter said.
“You have everything all wrong. First of all, yes, My Uri dated Nik for a while in the past.” He kissed Uriel’s forehead.
“But she was never happy in the relationship. You see, Nik has serious anger issues and he sometimes took it out on her.”
“Why was it never reported that he was abusive?”
“Because Uri begged me not to, she thought that she was in love. But Nik manipulated the state she was in at the moment. She had just lost her father and her subconscious was trying to find a replacement for him in Nik. She just couldn’t bear to lose Nik, till I talked with her and helped her break off their relationship.”
“So they had already split up before Nik was sent to jail.”
“Yes. I’ve never wanted to speak about all these because I just want it to stay in the past. But I’d rather it be the truth being circulated than rumours that would hurt Uri’s feelings. As for the company, it was never his. It only had his name on it because I allowed it for the sake of friendship. I’ve been behind the success of the company formally named Roch Enterprises, every project, every funding, it’s been me all along.”
I groaned but the word ‘liar’ that I was trying to articulate never left my lips. I was too weak to speak.
“Wow, this is all so surprising.” The reporter said.
“Yeah. After Nik was sent to jail, Uri and I got close and look where it ended up. I’m the luckiest man on the planet, and I have the best wife. I never imagined myself getting married so early, everyone knows that I’ve always been a ladies man.” Connor said and the guests chuckled because of his notorious reputation as a manwhore.
“But Uri made me realise that some things are not worth the delay. I wanted to officially make her mine for my peace of mind. I was always so scared that she would wake up one day and realise that she deserved better than me, and leave me. But I now understand how irrational that fear is and our love is stronger than it. Now, if you'll excuse me, my wife and I have a honeymoon to get going to.”
~
Connor picked Uriel up in a bridal style and there were a lot of whispers about how sweet Connor was and how good the couple looked together. The videos of Nik crashing the party and Connor’s speech were already trending on the internet.
Nik was carried out of the hall by the guards and dumped in an alley while the rest of the guests thought he had been taken home. The guards took turns beating him up before they left. He lay on the dirty floor, weak, tired, hungry and heartbroken, staring at the sky. At that moment, something in him changed. He promised himself that he would never let himself be humiliated that way again.
Nik forced himself to stand after laying there a while, and walked slowly towards the exit point of the alley. There was a group of guys smoking who hadn’t noticed him lying on the floor before.“Hey! Stop there.” One of them said.“Who the fuck are you?” Another one asked.Nik ignored them and just kept walking but one of them dragged him back.“Are you deaf or something?” A guy asked as he blew smoke in Nik’s face and Nik grabbed the man by his collar.Nik knew he was too weak to fight against all of them, but he wasn’t thinking straight. At the moment, his emotional pain felt so insurmountable, he wanted another form of pain to replace it. Physical pain was a bit more bearable, and he would heal from physical wounds eventually. The hole in his chest where his heart was supposed to be would never heal.“Give me your phone. I want to make a call." Nik said to the man."Who do you think you are to give me orders? Do you know who I am?" The leader of the gang asked Nik as he removed Ni
NIKAELEON***It was still early evening as I walked down the busy streets. I watched people go about their daily lives and I was filled with resentment because they got to live normally while my life was being ruined. I knew that it was nobody but Connor’s fault, but that knowledge still didn’t appease me. I took a bus and sat at the back as it moved.Scorpion had asked me to meet him at a warehouse in one of the shabby parts of town. I got off the bus at the stop closest to the location and continued walking. I brought out a phone that Scorpion had given to me from my pocket and dialled Scorpion’s number as I reached the warehouse gate. It was the only number saved on the phone.“I’m here, standing right outside where you asked me to meet you.” I spoke as Scorpion answered the call.“I can see you, turn around.” Scorpion said to me.I turned and saw him come out of a car I had just passed that was parked by the sidewalk. I had thought the car was empty, the windows were tinted so I
NIKAELEON***The rage I had been trying to contain seemed to erupt like an active volcano. I moved forward to confront Levi, but Scorpion held me back with a warning look in his eyes. I realised that this was Levi’s territory, he was the Don’s second in command and he could have me killed for one silly offense or the other. Going up against him now would be stupid. Levi smirked as I backed away, the bastard knew that he had the upper hand.“I was just taking him out. I’ll drop him off where I picked him up.” Scorpion said in a bid to distract Levi and maybe make him forget that I had basically threatened him just minutes ago.“It’s your job, and you’re being paid to do it, do you expect a thank you?” Levi said in a condescending tone to Scorpion.“No, Crusher. I was just informing you.” He replied.Levi turned away from Scorpion like he was a nuisance and faced me. I wanted to punch a hole in his stupid smug face like I had done to the wall in the boss’ office, but now was not the ri
NIKAELEON *** Scorpion had been right in his guess that I would be sent to the ring by the boss. The ring turned out to be an illegal street fighting syndicate. Scorpion had contacted me two days after I met the boss, and I was told to train with him everyday for a week. A day after, and here I am. We trained at the warehouse where i had met up with him before I was taken to the boss while wearing a blindfold. I was in the changing room with some of the other fighters but the roar of the crowd still penetrated through the walls. We were deep underground, in a basement arena that had been built for this purpose. I wondered how they were able to construct the place without law enforcement being suspicious of it’s purpose, but with money, a lot of things were possible. They policemen were probably on the bosses’ payrolls. The arena were soundproofed in a way that the sounds from down here wouldn’t get to the surface. There were almost three hundred spectators, mostly men and some wome
NIKAELEON *** It had been months since I started fighting in the ring. I had at least one fight scheduled every week, and I had gotten used to the rules of the place. Following the boss’ orders while fighting was no easy feat, imagine having to look away from your opponent to seek directions from your master and giving your opponent a chance to catch you off guard. The difference between life and death, winning and losing, was just one second. But I had learnt the way to do it without giving my opponent a chance to knock me out and win the fight. I just had to look up when my opponent was down temporarily, or when they were far enough from me that if they moved closer while I was distracted, I would have time to defend a direct attack. The boss also gave me a hand there. Unlike other masters that gave their fighters instructions one at a time and made them have to look away from me multiple times in a fight, the Boss gave me a string of commands at a time so I only had to look up tw
NIKAELEON***I groaned and tried to open my eyes but for some reason they felt so heavy. I would have just continued sleeping, but staying dormant like that felt so wrong, like my body was tired of sleeping. Or maybe it was my mind that was tired of the inactivity, who knows. My body also felt weirdly heavy and I couldn’t even move despite how much effort I was trying to put into lifting something, anything. Dread filled me as I realised that I may be paralysed, and I tried to remember why I was stuck like this, what could have led to it, but my memories were blank. Seems like my body and mind were on strike today.I began to hear movement and faint voices.“He’s stirring, get the doctor.” One voice that sounded so far away said and feet shuffled, probably to obey the order.“Nik.” I heard another voice that sounded closer, calling out to me.It was easier to try to pull myself out of whatever abyss I was stuck in when someone was calling for me, guiding me back to consciousness. All
NIKAELEON***I blinked repeatedly as I stared at the man that owned my life for the year. The man I had been working for that now somehow thinks I'm his son. These medications I’m hooked on must be really strong because there’s no way I just heard him say that he’s my father. That was ridiculous, I’m an orphan. I had no memories of my early childhood before my life on the streets, but children don’t live on the streets if they have parents somewhere. Then I was put into the system, into foster care, after recovering from the accident that almost claimed my life. If I had any parents, the authorities would have found them instead of putting me into the system.“You’re my son.” The boss said to himself as he stared at the paper in his hand with a bewildered expression.I turned to Scorpion who was gaping at me and the boss with a bemused and puzzled expression. If he’s staring like that, then he must have heard what the boss said too, that means I’m not crazy. But that didn’t make me f
NIKAELEON *** I stayed at the hospital for three more days before I asked to be discharged because I couldn’t bear the constant inactivity. It normally wouldn’t have been allowed, but my father just ordered the doctor’s to discharge me and they immediately signed me out. Father… it sounded so surreal anytime I thought about it. I have a father now, I’m not an orphan, I’m not a nobody. It was crazy to think that I spent so many years thinking I had no family when they were out there somewhere looking for me. I still wasn’t able to call him father out loud so I still called him the boss. He asked me to at least call him by his first name, Marco, because it felt wrong to him for his own son to call him boss. But calling him by his first name seemed worse to me. It was so weird to have such familiarity suddenly expected of me. We left the hospital with the boss’ entourage and were driven to his house, a different place from the other mansion. I was told that he only used that place fo
EPILOGUE *** NIKAELEON * I thought I understood nervousness when I was about to get married, or fear when Aina had been held at gun point, none of that compared to the feeling of watching my child being born. Aina and I had already agreed before hand that I would be inside while she was giving birth. She needed my support because this was her first birth, and I wanted to watch , it would help me treasure her sacrifice to have our babies. Yes, babies. It seemed Sophia's prayer for a brother and sister came to pass. We found out we were having twins when we went for a late ultrasound scan. She screamed as another contraction hit her and her grip on my hand almost crushed my bones but I just stroked her hair with my other hand. "I don't think I can do this anymore." Aina sobbed and my heart broke for her. I wish I could take her pain away even if just a little bit and I hated being so helpless because at this point, there was nothing I could do for her. "Just a little bit more, Mr
NIKAELEON *** I never expected to be nervous today. It was usual to be nervous when you’re getting married, but I didn’t expect to be nervous, I expected to go through it calmly like I usually did everything in my life. Instead, I was fidgety, checking my reflection in the mirror a hundred times even though I looked perfect physically. “You look great, son. Stay still before you make a hole in the floor with your pacing.” My father chuckled as he walked into my room. “I don’t know why I’m even nervous. I was fine yesterday.” I said to him as I adjusted my tie again. “I was the same way when I married your mother. A lot of people no longer value marriage, but it’s supposed to be sacred. A lifelong vow of commitment to the one person you choose to live the rest of your life with. And you love her, you’re afraid of making a mistake and ruining what you both have.” I was about to protest and tell my father that this marriage was just an arrangement, after all, as a mafia boss, love w
NIKAELEON *** It has been weeks since Connor was arrested along with the leaders of the Black Knights. Some other lower ranked members had also been apprehended these past weeks. Connor and the leaders had already been tried in court and sentenced to life imprisonment. The others were still awaiting trial but it didn’t matter, they were just pawns, the main players were already in jail. Last I heard, Connor had been nearly paralysed and had to be hospitalised for almost two weeks. I had no sympathy for him and neither did the government, he was still sent back to prison on crutches to continue living with his assailants. My revenge on him was complete. Uriel had also been tried for illegal possession of a firearm and threatening people’s lives with it, but she hadn’t been sent to jail because I didn’t press charges to add to these ones. She was on house arrest for a year, with community service and court ordained therapy. I went to visit her occasionally so she could video call Soph
NIKAELEON***A FEW DAYS LATER*The courtroom buzzed with tension as the arguments echoed through the room, each side presenting their case for Sophia's custody. It was Manolo’s turn to speak now."Your Honor, We have substantial evidence to establish that Ms. Uriel is mentally unstable and unfit to provide a stable and nurturing environment for Sophia. We also have expert testimonies from qualified mental health professionals who have evaluated Ms. Uriel and have concluded that her mental state poses a risk to the well-being of the child."We gave the court a video clip from the security footage from the mansion showing the moment Uriel had grabbed Sophia roughly after Sophia announced that she was having a sibling. There was no sound because it was CCTV, but it was evident that Uriel was being aggressive to Sophia. That was enough to help our case.Uriel's lawyer countered with equal enthusiasm.“Your Honor, I assure you that my client is mentally sound. Those reports were taken wh
NIKAELEON***“I know what you’re going to say, Aina. You want me to release them without punishment, but I can’t do that. Yes, I know they’re in love and no one is above mistakes, I also know that this crime isn’t as bad as it would have been if he had been the traitor.” I said to her as we stepped out of the interrogation room and began to walk towards the back entrance to the house.“If you know, then why can’t you just release them?” She asked.“I’m sure you already know why. I set my rules for a reason, and if someone breaks any of my rules, no matter how justified they are, there has to be a consequence or no one will respect my rules. That’s why there are laws, and prison is the consequence if those laws are broken.”“Can’t you make an exception just this once? She’s pregnant, Nik.” She said and I sighed.“I’m not sending them away if that’s what you think. For their own good and mine. If they aren’t here, they’ll be easy to kill by my enemies or captured and tortured for infor
NIKALEOEN***“Fine. You can come along. But don’t interfere.” I said to her and the look she gave me said she would definitely interfere.“Don’t interfere too much.” I acquiesced with a sigh and she smiled.“And you better not cry.” I said to her and she huffed.“I’m not a baby.”As much as I wanted her by my side, I knew the path that lay ahead would test the limits of her resolve. "I never said you were a baby, Aina, this won't be easy. I may have to resort to violent means, and I may do things you may not approve. I don’t want you to resent me for it and begin to see me as some kind of monster. I really don't want you to witness what might transpire in that interrogation room. It could get ugly." I admitted.“I’ve always known there is a dark side of you, Nik. And I’ve made my peace with it. I know you don’t just go about torturing or hurting people on a whim or for fun, and when you do anything, it’s for a reason. I won’t blame you for anything you do today, you’re trying to pro
NIKAELEON***“And I also wanted to apologise for the scene I caused, it wasn’t my intention to let Sophia know that you’re my baby’s father. I just wanted to get her mind off seeing you both fighting so I told her I was having a baby and showed her the sonogram. When she asked me who the baby’s father was, I just replied without thinking and then she bolted out here to tell you before I could stop her.” Aina explained.“It’s fine. I know you didn’t have an ulterior motive for telling her, and I could see the look on your face when she ran here with the sonogram, I knew it was just a mistake and I don’t blame you for it. In fact, I think I’m relieved, I’ve been thinking of a way to tell Sophia that she would have a sibling soon, wondering how she would react. Now I know that I was just worried for nothing.” I replied to her.“Yeah, she’s so excited to be a big sister. She has already told me in detail all the things she plans to do, and by the way, she says she wants two siblings, one
AINA***I led Sophia away and she followed me, her tiny hand clutching onto me tightly.I took her to my room and sat down on the bed with her in my lap. I put her small hand on my tummy.“I have a baby in my tummy now.” I said and her eyes widened in surprise and childish delight.“You swallowed a baby?” She asked incredulously and I burst into startled laughter.“Oh! Heavens no! I can’t swallow a baby, I’m not a cannibal. The baby is growing in my tummy.” I said to her and there was a look of childish wonder in her eyes.“Babies grow in tummies? I thought they were sent from heaven by storks, I watched that in a cartoon. All the animals were on a train and when it was time for them to have babies, the birds carried the babies in white cloth and dropped them off one by one in the mummy and daddy’s cages.” Sophia said and I laughed again.I definitely wasn’t having the talk on where babies come from with her. It had been awkward when my own mother had ‘the talk’ with me, and I wasn’t
NIKAELEON***“We need to talk, Nik. That’s why I’m here.” She replied to me and I nearly chuckled at the audacity she had to show up at my house to demand an audience with me.“We have nothing to talk about, Uriel. Or rather, I have nothing to talk about with you even though you may have something to say. I have no interest, nor do I have the time or patience to listen to whatever nonsense you want to say to me. So leave before I have you arrested for trespassing.” I said to her.“You can’t do that.” She said and I scoffed.“You have no idea what I’m capable of, Uriel. I suspect it’s the reason why you dare defy me so often.” I said to her. “If the police come, I’ll just tell them that I came to see Sophia and you denied me entrance. It will look bad on you while the custody case is still being deliberated on by the court.” She said.I was about to tell her to go fuck herself when Aina put a hand on my forearm. I turned to look at her and she didn’t need to speak to communicate her
