"Tell me where they are. Where is the wedding?" Nik asked as he paced.
"There's no need to go there, Nik. You'll just get hurt even more if you see them." Anika said as she touched his arm but he shrugged her off.
"No. I need to see with my own two eyes."
"You're angry, Nik. You may do something that may send you back to jail for an even longer sentence. Is that what you want? You just got out." Tedros said.
Nik took deep breaths and tried to smile.
"I won't, I promise. I'll just congratulate the happy couple." Nik said.
"No, Nik. I'm sorry, but you may have good intentions but you won't be able to stand seeing them. I know how much you love Uri, and Connor has been your best friend for years. I can't trust you to go there and not cause a scene that would get you arrested."
"Why do you care if I ruin the damn wedding, huh? Are you part of their plan too? Are there cameras here somewhere recording me while I lose my mind so you all can watch it later and laugh at me?" Nik said with a furious expression.
"I dont care about them, Nik. I care about what happens to you. You've been through enough already. You need to move on and get your life back together. If you get into more trouble, your future will be at stake. You can rebuild your empire, Anika and I will help you get back on your feet. Forget about Uriel and Connor." Tedros said to him and Anika hugged him.
Nik lifted her and hugged her tight, absorbing her warmth. It had been so long since he let himself be touched by someone. In prison, people were either trying to rape or kill him.
"Okay." Nik sighed.
"I won't go. " He kissed Anika's forehead and stepped back from her.
"But, at least show me. I need to show my mind that there is no hope anymore, that I can never get my old life back, so I can stop longing for what I've lost and move on."
"Their wedding is all over social media." Tedros said as he brought out his phone.
"I'll show you some videos, and then you'll take a bath, agreed?" Tedros asked.
"Do I really smell so bad that you want to force me to bathe?" Nik chuckled and Tedros nudged him with an elbow.
"I'm serious, Nik." Tedrod said and Nik sighed.
"Okay. Video then bath, agreed."
Tedros tapped on his phone for some seconds after Nik had acquiesced.
"Here." Tedros said as he gave Nik his phone.
"Don't lose your shit."
"No promises." Nik chuckled as he took the phone.
He looked like he was okay, but his heart was racing as he tapped play on the video in Tedros' phone. As it began to play, his heart pumped so hard that it felt like it was trying to move out of his chest.
Up until that moment, he had been hoping it was al a lie, a prank that his friends were trying to pull on him. He had still been hoping that Connor and Uri would pop out from somewhere in the house, laughing at him because he believed that they had betrayed him. Uri would have been hurt that he hadn't believed in their love, she would pout and he would kiss her and apologize over and over again. Connor would have just laughed and pat his back.
But instead, he saw videos from people outside the venue. The one he was currently watching showed Uriel walking into the venue wearing her wedding gown. Then the camera moved to show Connor waiting for her with a smile on his face. Nik's whole body shook with unbridled anger, and his vision went hazy with fury. He clenched his hand till Tedros' phone cracked.
"Whoa, man. You've gotten really strong." Tedros said and his voice was what made Nik snap out of it.
"Sorry, man. I'll get you a new one later." Nik chuckled as he gave the cracked phone to Tedros.
"Oh! I forgot. I dont have a dime. I'm broke now." Nik laughed.
Anika and Tedros chuckled nervously at his joke about himself.
"I'm really sorry that all this is happening to you, Nik. You really dont deserve it at all. And I wish there was more we could do for you, but our hands are tied." Anika said with a sad smile.
"Its not your fault. You both have done more than enough for me. Helping me and giving me a roof to stay in even though it must be inconveniencing. If not for the both of you, I would be lost. Don't worry, I'll be fine. Just show me to my room." Nik said.
"It's right this way. I'll take you while Anika makes something for you to eat." Tedros said as he led Nik down the hall.
"After your bath, just put on a robe and come join us at the dining table. We'll launder your dirty clothes so you can wear then when we go shopping later today."
"I don't need to go with you, just get me clothes that are my size, and I'll wear them." Nik said.
"No. You're coming with us so you can pick clothes that you like. This isn't a refugee camp where you have to take what you're given whether you like it or not. You also need something to get your mind off Uriel and Connor's wedding. Going shopping is the perfect distraction. When you're done picking clothes, we'll shop for groceries. With your current size, you probably eat twice more than we usually consume." Tedros said as he nudged Nik, and they both laughed.
"Thanks, Ted. I appreciate all you both are doing for me." Nik said as they got to the door of the guest bedroom.
"Stop thanking me, Nik. What are friends for? Hurry so you can meet the food while it's hot." Tedros said and returned back to Anika.
Almost an hour later, Nik still hadn't come out of the room, so Anika sent Tedros to get him thinking that he probably just feel asleep in the bath tub. But when Tedros went to the guest room, Nik wasn't there and the window was open. He rushed back to the kitchen.
"Anika, he's gone."
AUTHOR'S NOTE; If you were in Nik's shoes, would you go to the wedding to cause a scene and risk getting imprisoned again?
"Gone? That's not possible. We would have seen him if he tried to leave the house. Maybe he's in another room. It's his first time here, he probably just wants to explore a little bit." Anika replied to her husband with a look of disbelief."The room is empty, I checked it. I checked the other rooms too before coming here. He didn't leave through the door, he left through the window in his room. I should have known he would go no matter what we said to him. Nik is a stubborn bastard." Tedros said as he picked up his phone."Are you trying to call him? He doesn't have a phone." Anika said and Tedros ran his hands through his hair."Damn it, I forgot about that." He said."What do we do, Teddy?" Anika asked in a panicky voice."I don't know. I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens. He may not even be able to get there before the wedding is over. He'll probably get lost, he doesn't even know the venue.""Nik is smart, Teddy. He had seen what the venue looked like in the vide
NIKAELEON***Everyone turned to look at me, but I didn’t give a damn as long as I got Connor’s hands off my woman. I’m sure this was all a big misunderstanding, Uri would never leave me. Connor must have forced her into this.“I said let her go!” I said again as I walked towards them.Everyone moved out of my way. Uri looked petrified as I got closer to them, but Connor just smirked. I realised why he was so calm when some security personnels tackled me to the ground. I wanted to wipe that smirk off his face so badly. The old Nik they knew would have been subdued by guards, but not this prison hardened Nik. I punched the first guard that was on top of me on his face and it felt so good to hear his bones crunch because of the force of my punch.I kicked the second one that was crouched close to my legs and had been trying to cuff my hands and dragged the third one down to headbutt him. People screamed as I battered three more guards, and hearing how afraid they were of me filled me wi
Nik forced himself to stand after laying there a while, and walked slowly towards the exit point of the alley. There was a group of guys smoking who hadn’t noticed him lying on the floor before.“Hey! Stop there.” One of them said.“Who the fuck are you?” Another one asked.Nik ignored them and just kept walking but one of them dragged him back.“Are you deaf or something?” A guy asked as he blew smoke in Nik’s face and Nik grabbed the man by his collar.Nik knew he was too weak to fight against all of them, but he wasn’t thinking straight. At the moment, his emotional pain felt so insurmountable, he wanted another form of pain to replace it. Physical pain was a bit more bearable, and he would heal from physical wounds eventually. The hole in his chest where his heart was supposed to be would never heal.“Give me your phone. I want to make a call." Nik said to the man."Who do you think you are to give me orders? Do you know who I am?" The leader of the gang asked Nik as he removed Ni
NIKAELEON***It was still early evening as I walked down the busy streets. I watched people go about their daily lives and I was filled with resentment because they got to live normally while my life was being ruined. I knew that it was nobody but Connor’s fault, but that knowledge still didn’t appease me. I took a bus and sat at the back as it moved.Scorpion had asked me to meet him at a warehouse in one of the shabby parts of town. I got off the bus at the stop closest to the location and continued walking. I brought out a phone that Scorpion had given to me from my pocket and dialled Scorpion’s number as I reached the warehouse gate. It was the only number saved on the phone.“I’m here, standing right outside where you asked me to meet you.” I spoke as Scorpion answered the call.“I can see you, turn around.” Scorpion said to me.I turned and saw him come out of a car I had just passed that was parked by the sidewalk. I had thought the car was empty, the windows were tinted so I
NIKAELEON***The rage I had been trying to contain seemed to erupt like an active volcano. I moved forward to confront Levi, but Scorpion held me back with a warning look in his eyes. I realised that this was Levi’s territory, he was the Don’s second in command and he could have me killed for one silly offense or the other. Going up against him now would be stupid. Levi smirked as I backed away, the bastard knew that he had the upper hand.“I was just taking him out. I’ll drop him off where I picked him up.” Scorpion said in a bid to distract Levi and maybe make him forget that I had basically threatened him just minutes ago.“It’s your job, and you’re being paid to do it, do you expect a thank you?” Levi said in a condescending tone to Scorpion.“No, Crusher. I was just informing you.” He replied.Levi turned away from Scorpion like he was a nuisance and faced me. I wanted to punch a hole in his stupid smug face like I had done to the wall in the boss’ office, but now was not the ri
NIKAELEON *** Scorpion had been right in his guess that I would be sent to the ring by the boss. The ring turned out to be an illegal street fighting syndicate. Scorpion had contacted me two days after I met the boss, and I was told to train with him everyday for a week. A day after, and here I am. We trained at the warehouse where i had met up with him before I was taken to the boss while wearing a blindfold. I was in the changing room with some of the other fighters but the roar of the crowd still penetrated through the walls. We were deep underground, in a basement arena that had been built for this purpose. I wondered how they were able to construct the place without law enforcement being suspicious of it’s purpose, but with money, a lot of things were possible. They policemen were probably on the bosses’ payrolls. The arena were soundproofed in a way that the sounds from down here wouldn’t get to the surface. There were almost three hundred spectators, mostly men and some wome
NIKAELEON *** It had been months since I started fighting in the ring. I had at least one fight scheduled every week, and I had gotten used to the rules of the place. Following the boss’ orders while fighting was no easy feat, imagine having to look away from your opponent to seek directions from your master and giving your opponent a chance to catch you off guard. The difference between life and death, winning and losing, was just one second. But I had learnt the way to do it without giving my opponent a chance to knock me out and win the fight. I just had to look up when my opponent was down temporarily, or when they were far enough from me that if they moved closer while I was distracted, I would have time to defend a direct attack. The boss also gave me a hand there. Unlike other masters that gave their fighters instructions one at a time and made them have to look away from me multiple times in a fight, the Boss gave me a string of commands at a time so I only had to look up tw
NIKAELEON***I groaned and tried to open my eyes but for some reason they felt so heavy. I would have just continued sleeping, but staying dormant like that felt so wrong, like my body was tired of sleeping. Or maybe it was my mind that was tired of the inactivity, who knows. My body also felt weirdly heavy and I couldn’t even move despite how much effort I was trying to put into lifting something, anything. Dread filled me as I realised that I may be paralysed, and I tried to remember why I was stuck like this, what could have led to it, but my memories were blank. Seems like my body and mind were on strike today.I began to hear movement and faint voices.“He’s stirring, get the doctor.” One voice that sounded so far away said and feet shuffled, probably to obey the order.“Nik.” I heard another voice that sounded closer, calling out to me.It was easier to try to pull myself out of whatever abyss I was stuck in when someone was calling for me, guiding me back to consciousness. EPILOGUE *** NIKAELEON * I thought I understood nervousness when I was about to get married, or fear when Aina had been held at gun point, none of that compared to the feeling of watching my child being born. Aina and I had already agreed before hand that I would be inside while she was giving birth. She needed my support because this was her first birth, and I wanted to watch , it would help me treasure her sacrifice to have our babies. Yes, babies. It seemed Sophia's prayer for a brother and sister came to pass. We found out we were having twins when we went for a late ultrasound scan. She screamed as another contraction hit her and her grip on my hand almost crushed my bones but I just stroked her hair with my other hand. "I don't think I can do this anymore." Aina sobbed and my heart broke for her. I wish I could take her pain away even if just a little bit and I hated being so helpless because at this point, there was nothing I could do for her. "Just a little bit more, Mr
NIKAELEON *** I never expected to be nervous today. It was usual to be nervous when you’re getting married, but I didn’t expect to be nervous, I expected to go through it calmly like I usually did everything in my life. Instead, I was fidgety, checking my reflection in the mirror a hundred times even though I looked perfect physically. “You look great, son. Stay still before you make a hole in the floor with your pacing.” My father chuckled as he walked into my room. “I don’t know why I’m even nervous. I was fine yesterday.” I said to him as I adjusted my tie again. “I was the same way when I married your mother. A lot of people no longer value marriage, but it’s supposed to be sacred. A lifelong vow of commitment to the one person you choose to live the rest of your life with. And you love her, you’re afraid of making a mistake and ruining what you both have.” I was about to protest and tell my father that this marriage was just an arrangement, after all, as a mafia boss, love w
NIKAELEON *** It has been weeks since Connor was arrested along with the leaders of the Black Knights. Some other lower ranked members had also been apprehended these past weeks. Connor and the leaders had already been tried in court and sentenced to life imprisonment. The others were still awaiting trial but it didn’t matter, they were just pawns, the main players were already in jail. Last I heard, Connor had been nearly paralysed and had to be hospitalised for almost two weeks. I had no sympathy for him and neither did the government, he was still sent back to prison on crutches to continue living with his assailants. My revenge on him was complete. Uriel had also been tried for illegal possession of a firearm and threatening people’s lives with it, but she hadn’t been sent to jail because I didn’t press charges to add to these ones. She was on house arrest for a year, with community service and court ordained therapy. I went to visit her occasionally so she could video call Soph
NIKAELEON***A FEW DAYS LATER*The courtroom buzzed with tension as the arguments echoed through the room, each side presenting their case for Sophia's custody. It was Manolo’s turn to speak now."Your Honor, We have substantial evidence to establish that Ms. Uriel is mentally unstable and unfit to provide a stable and nurturing environment for Sophia. We also have expert testimonies from qualified mental health professionals who have evaluated Ms. Uriel and have concluded that her mental state poses a risk to the well-being of the child."We gave the court a video clip from the security footage from the mansion showing the moment Uriel had grabbed Sophia roughly after Sophia announced that she was having a sibling. There was no sound because it was CCTV, but it was evident that Uriel was being aggressive to Sophia. That was enough to help our case.Uriel's lawyer countered with equal enthusiasm.“Your Honor, I assure you that my client is mentally sound. Those reports were taken wh
NIKAELEON***“I know what you’re going to say, Aina. You want me to release them without punishment, but I can’t do that. Yes, I know they’re in love and no one is above mistakes, I also know that this crime isn’t as bad as it would have been if he had been the traitor.” I said to her as we stepped out of the interrogation room and began to walk towards the back entrance to the house.“If you know, then why can’t you just release them?” She asked.“I’m sure you already know why. I set my rules for a reason, and if someone breaks any of my rules, no matter how justified they are, there has to be a consequence or no one will respect my rules. That’s why there are laws, and prison is the consequence if those laws are broken.”“Can’t you make an exception just this once? She’s pregnant, Nik.” She said and I sighed.“I’m not sending them away if that’s what you think. For their own good and mine. If they aren’t here, they’ll be easy to kill by my enemies or captured and tortured for infor
NIKALEOEN***“Fine. You can come along. But don’t interfere.” I said to her and the look she gave me said she would definitely interfere.“Don’t interfere too much.” I acquiesced with a sigh and she smiled.“And you better not cry.” I said to her and she huffed.“I’m not a baby.”As much as I wanted her by my side, I knew the path that lay ahead would test the limits of her resolve. "I never said you were a baby, Aina, this won't be easy. I may have to resort to violent means, and I may do things you may not approve. I don’t want you to resent me for it and begin to see me as some kind of monster. I really don't want you to witness what might transpire in that interrogation room. It could get ugly." I admitted.“I’ve always known there is a dark side of you, Nik. And I’ve made my peace with it. I know you don’t just go about torturing or hurting people on a whim or for fun, and when you do anything, it’s for a reason. I won’t blame you for anything you do today, you’re trying to pro
NIKAELEON***“And I also wanted to apologise for the scene I caused, it wasn’t my intention to let Sophia know that you’re my baby’s father. I just wanted to get her mind off seeing you both fighting so I told her I was having a baby and showed her the sonogram. When she asked me who the baby’s father was, I just replied without thinking and then she bolted out here to tell you before I could stop her.” Aina explained.“It’s fine. I know you didn’t have an ulterior motive for telling her, and I could see the look on your face when she ran here with the sonogram, I knew it was just a mistake and I don’t blame you for it. In fact, I think I’m relieved, I’ve been thinking of a way to tell Sophia that she would have a sibling soon, wondering how she would react. Now I know that I was just worried for nothing.” I replied to her.“Yeah, she’s so excited to be a big sister. She has already told me in detail all the things she plans to do, and by the way, she says she wants two siblings, one
AINA***I led Sophia away and she followed me, her tiny hand clutching onto me tightly.I took her to my room and sat down on the bed with her in my lap. I put her small hand on my tummy.“I have a baby in my tummy now.” I said and her eyes widened in surprise and childish delight.“You swallowed a baby?” She asked incredulously and I burst into startled laughter.“Oh! Heavens no! I can’t swallow a baby, I’m not a cannibal. The baby is growing in my tummy.” I said to her and there was a look of childish wonder in her eyes.“Babies grow in tummies? I thought they were sent from heaven by storks, I watched that in a cartoon. All the animals were on a train and when it was time for them to have babies, the birds carried the babies in white cloth and dropped them off one by one in the mummy and daddy’s cages.” Sophia said and I laughed again.I definitely wasn’t having the talk on where babies come from with her. It had been awkward when my own mother had ‘the talk’ with me, and I wasn’t
NIKAELEON***“We need to talk, Nik. That’s why I’m here.” She replied to me and I nearly chuckled at the audacity she had to show up at my house to demand an audience with me.“We have nothing to talk about, Uriel. Or rather, I have nothing to talk about with you even though you may have something to say. I have no interest, nor do I have the time or patience to listen to whatever nonsense you want to say to me. So leave before I have you arrested for trespassing.” I said to her.“You can’t do that.” She said and I scoffed.“You have no idea what I’m capable of, Uriel. I suspect it’s the reason why you dare defy me so often.” I said to her. “If the police come, I’ll just tell them that I came to see Sophia and you denied me entrance. It will look bad on you while the custody case is still being deliberated on by the court.” She said.I was about to tell her to go fuck herself when Aina put a hand on my forearm. I turned to look at her and she didn’t need to speak to communicate her
