"I'M GOING TO the hospital," A tall thin man in an oversized suit said, getting into the taxi.
Arthur started the engine and drove on.He had been doing this for over a week now and even as he didn't expect to like it, he found himself waking up every morning looking forward to the type of people he was going to meet that day.He had found a small apartment on the outskirts of downtown. It was a shabby building, but he had nice neighbors and a place to sleep. He had also bought some casual clothes, not as expensive as the first set he had bought, but they were not cheap either.Oftentimes, he caught himself thinking of his late friend, William, but he snapped himself out of getting sad, and for that reason, he was glad to have a job as tasking and busy as a taxi driver. It kept his mind from thinking of the past and trying to regain his memory."Would you like some music, sir?" Arthur asked his passenger. The man shook his head. "I would prefer the silence."Arthur nodded. He knew passengers like this. Working as a taxi driver made him very sensitive to people. He was getting very good at reading people. Arthur noted the way the man was tapping his thumb against his thigh and fixed his gaze out the window, He could tell that this was a nervous passenger."Your wife?" He asked the man.The man stilled and looked at Arthur, and then he nodded. "How did you know?"Arthur gave an easy smile but didn't answer. He knew the person in the hospital could either be a wife or a sister. He took a gamble and guessed."She put to bed?" Arthur asked. He guessed again that it was a good news. If it was a bad thing that was taking him to the hospital, he would have been more hysterical and agitated. The man nodded."First tike dad. Congratulations." Arthur greeted."She should not be due till next month. I'm worried about the premature birth."The man said."I'm sure everything will be fine. Don't worry about it, okay?"The man nodded and he was considerably calmer after the talk.Arthur drove and parked in front of the hospital. The man started to pay but Arthur shook his head. "Don't bother about the payment, sir. As my way of congratulating you. Go see your wife."The man nodded gratefully and hurried in.Arthur smiled and relaxed in his seat. He would cover up the man's fare with his own money.Although he had worked with Carl for over a week, Henry's demeanor had not warmed towards him. The short, round man was bent on framing Arthur for something that would make him get fired. The second day after Arthur resumed, Henry had called him into Carl's office. The complaint was that Arthur had been complained by the customers for driving too fast."What?!" Arthur had asked, not believing his ears."I have the proof here," Henry had said. They both looked at Carl who watched them, bored out of his mind. Carl's silence had given Henry the mind to continue, he brought out his tablet and said, "We implanted tracking devices on each taxi, and following the heat map along this route, you were overspeeding."Arthur never went over the city's speed limit. "Let me see that." He grasped the tablet from Henry and looked at the screen."I didn't even drive through here yesterday," Arthur had claimed. "And I have the proof!" He echoed Henry's earlier words. They turned to look at Carl again, who remained silent. Arthur brought out his daily invoice and proved that he was innocent. As he walked out of the office without getting into any trouble, he could feel Henry's gaze burn into his back. He had smiled all the way down. Now, still parked in the hospital's parking lot, he glanced at his watch. It was just 12 noon."I think I have earned myself a break," He started the engine and drove out, "Time for lunch."He found a fast food place just down the street and got in to eat. He took his tune eating, He enjoyed watching people, and he watched as they came and went.[New Task >>> Quit your job as a taxi driver][Deadline in 5 hours]Arthur groaned. "Just when I'm starting to enjoy it,""The system needed you to get some skills from that job, and you have successfully gotten it," The robotic voice said, "Now it is time for the next phase."Arthur sighed. He paid his bill, left a large top for the waitress, and got out. The taxi phone was ringing as he got in. It was a call from the company. He picked the phone up, "Taxi 409, driver Arthur Salvatore. How may I help you?""Get your ass to the office right now!" The person on the other end said and hung up. Arthur knew that voice. That was Henry.Arthur drove back to the tower and made his way to the office on the top floor. Henry and Carl sat inside. Arthur knocked politely before entering.Henhouse immediately stood up to face Arthur. "Why was your car at a spot for a long time?""What are you talking about?" Arthur snarled."Your car wasn't moving for almost an hour," Henry said. He turned to Carl, "You see, sir. This is what he does. He is a lazy son of a bitch!""Easy, Henry," Carl said. He rubbed his eyesockets and spoke to Arthur, "But he's right, Arthur. Your car should always be on the move, that's why I'm paying you.""I was having lunch," Arthur explained. "It was a long lunch.""Bought with your money, sir!" Henry piped."Shut your mouth, midget," Arthur snapped. "Or I'll be forced to shut it for you.""He called me a midget!" Henry said like he couldn't believe it. He vibrated on a spot like a pressurized bottle. "You should fire him and send him away, sir."Carl simply looked like he was tired of everything. He sighed, leaving Arthur and Henry to face off. And he admitted that standing in front of Arthur, Henry really did look like a midget."There will be no need to fire me, sir," Arthur said through clenched teeth."Yes there –""Shut it," Arthur cut Henry off. "I quit. I was just coming here to tell you before he called me.""Are you sure?" Carl asked tentatively.Arthur nodded. "Would you like a letter to go with it?"Carl shook his head and said, "That won't be necessary. Do you have the keys?"Arthur handed the keys to Carl. They shook hands amicably."You are a good person, Arthur Salvatore. I wish you good luck on whatever it is you're going to do next."Arthur nodded. "Thank you, sir." And walked out."Are you just going to let him go like that?" Henry seethed. "After he insulted me and –""Shut up, Henry, and get back to work!" Carl snapped.Arthur chuckled as he heard.[Task completed successfully][Gifts unlocked][People's skills. It felt like Arthur was in a theater with flicking scenes. He saw an old woman with white hair. She was holding the gold necklace that he had around his neck now. "Grandmother?" He muttered to himself. The images kept flashing in his head. The memories kept on filling the blank spots in his head. After almost 30 minutes, the images stopped rolling. "60 percent of your memories have been restored," The system told him. Arthur released a long breath and nodded to himself. Sure enough, he remembered almost everything. He remembered his father, stepmother, and step-brothers. What he could not fathom was why they had not reached out to him. From the newly gained memories, he could tell that they did not like him so much, but after no contact for over 5 months, they should have tried to find him. Maybe he should find them, he thought to himself. "Not yet," The system replied. "Soon, it will be a task for you. But not now." "You don't get to co
"Little brother?" Arthur asked. "Do I know you?" "Stop the joke, Arthur," The man said. "Look, It's me, Liam. Your stepbrother. Here," He took off his face cap and dark shades. Arthur looked at him again, he was still having some difficulty piecing together some of his memories. It was still all a bunch of garbage in his head. Then slowly, it started stringing together. "Liam? Liam!" He remembered. Liam was the son of his stepmother before she married his father and he had not been really wicked or evil to Arthur all those years ago, but neither had he been exceptionally friendly. So Arthur was confused as to why he was there. "I didn't know what to think when you disappeared all those months ago," Liam said. "Mother wouldn't say anything. Your father, Edward too refused to comment. We all just assumed that you were missing, or worst-case scenario, dead. Where were you?" Arthur shrugged. "I've been… huh, alive. As you can see." Arthur shrugged out of his coat and dumped it on the
ARTHUR GROANED AND opened another can of beer. "A job at a nightclub…" He muttered to himself as he raised the beer to his mouth. Then he shrugged and sat down, after all, The system did not specify if he had a deadline or not. He thought that he could chill for as long as he wanted. But just as he prepared to close his eyes and sleep on the couch, his mind kept on wandering about what his stepbrother had just told him. The major part of his day had been spent being punished for a crime he did not do because he was a 'nobody'. He groaned again, stood up, and put on his coat. He decided that there was no way that he was going to spend the night drinking beer and sleeping, so he took one glance at his living room before walking out. As he walked along the street which was still very busy, he put his hoodie up because it was a cold night. Bright neon lights flashed and caught his attention as he walked past. He hummed to himself as he walked lightly, making sure not to brush past any
"WHO ARE YOU?!" A loud voice shrieked. Arthur snapped awake, tumbled backward over the chair he had been sleeping on, and tried to gather himself. "Wha?" He rubbed his face. His brain was still half asleep so he tried to remember why there was another person in his house as he stood from the floor. "Who are you?" The lady asked again. "And where am I?" Then Arthur remembered the events of last night. The bar. The alley. The two men. And finally, this woman. She was awake now. "I saved your ass from robbers last night!" Arthur snapped, twisting his neck to release the cramped feeling there. "Robbers?" The woman asked. "It looks like you kidnapped me!" Arthur sighed. "I don't have the strength for this. Look," He pointed at the door. "That's the door. It's unlocked you can go." He walked over and sat on the couch. The woman looked at him. uncertainty and suspicion glinted in her eyes, but then, she reluctantly went over to pick up her shoes. She sat at the other end of the cou
ARTHUR WALKED INTO the first restaurant that he came across and sat down near the window. When the waitress approached him to ask what he would like, He said, "I want a full breakfast. Scrambled eggs, bacon, waffles, hashbrowns, toast, and a jug of orange juice." The waitress looked at him, "All those for only you?"Arthur nodded. She walked away to get his orders and came back a few minutes later balancing two trays in her arms. She gently placed them on the table. "All those food are going to kill you," She said jovially. Arthur laughed. "No, it won't." Then he dug in. He knew he needed to eat a lot to be able to gain as much muscles as he wanted. After he was done here, he was going to find a gym to enroll himself in. 45 minutes later, Arthur was done with the breakfast. To the waitress's humor, he could barely stand straight. His stomach jutted out and he felt very filled. "I think I over ate," He muttered as he waddled out. He strolled the area until he found a gym. He got
IT HAS BEEN three weeks. Three long, excruciating weeks for Arthur of going to the gym 5 days a week. He groaned awake and turned over on his bed, groaning even more at the sore and aching muscles all over his body. After lying in bed rebooting his brain for 10 minutes, he swung his leg over his bed and stood up. He went to the bathroom to brush his mouth and wash up, as he did his things, he looked at himself in the mirror. "There are no changes!" He muttered at his reflection. "I'm still as skinny and puny as I was one month ago."He rinsed his mouth and went to the kitchen. He had been following his coach's instruction by cooking his meals himself. He had bought a cookbook filled with different recipes that he wanted to try and after he started cooking his meals, he found out that he enjoyed cooking very much.He mixed up his protein shake, broke 5 eggs into his heated-up frying pan, and sat down to drink his shakes as the eggs cooked. All he wanted to do today was just to eat,
ARTHUR CHECKED HIS wristwatch again. It was 8.00 p.m. on the dot when he walked through the door. He gave a nod at the bartender. It was not the one he knew, but that didn't deter him from greeting. Mr. Swan stood near the door of the stairs, beside him was a huge man that made Arthur feel like a dwarf. "Ah, there he is," Mr. Swan said when he saw Arthur coming towards him. The huge man turned and gave Arthur a hard stare. "Arthur, this is your direct boss, Ethan," Mr. Swan said. "Ethan, this is the new guy, Arthur." Ethan and Arthur stared at each other for a while, and then Ethan stuck out his hand for a handshake which Arthur started to take. But then he looked into Ethan's cold eyes and realized what he was about to do so at the last moment, he retraced his palm a fraction and caught the handshake well. He knew Ethan wanted to squeeze his hand and watch him writhe in pain, but Arthur caught Ethan around his fingers instead of his knuckles and watched as Ethan squeezed and ex
ARTHUR GLANCED BACK briefly as he hurried through the dark hallway, he could still see the silhouette of the lady following him. "What the hell?" He muttered to himself as he burst through the door of the employee restrooms. He went to the hand basin and poured water from the tap onto his face. As expected, a few seconds later, the door opened and the lady walked in. Arthur looked at her through the mirror and then turned, "I'm sorry, ma'am but you can't be here. This is the male employee's bathroom," She smirked and walked forward, "Are you going to carry me out?" She asked slowly as she approached Arthur. "What do you want?" Arthur asked gripping the edge of the basin. "I remembered you from that restaurant that day," The lady said. "You've gotten even hotter. More…" she touched his upper arms, "Masculine and harder." Arthur slicked out of her grasp. "So what do you want with me?" He asked. "I want you," The lady said, walking forward again. Arthur took a step back. "Listen,
