Chapter 4: Goblins, Frying Pans, and the Unexpected Rescue
last update2024-12-19 21:09:57

Trevor trudged through the dense forest, his frying pan in one hand and Sir Clucksalot perched precariously on his shoulder. The Pyrocluck had been surprisingly quiet ever since Trevor decided to take on the goblin quest.

“I’m starting to think I’ve made a huge mistake,” Trevor muttered, eyeing the thick underbrush around him. “There’s no way a frying pan is going to help me take down goblins.”

“Don’t be so dramatic,” GL1TCH buzzed from his pocket. “Goblins are weak. A well-timed frying pan swing and you’ll be fine. Trust me, it’s all about timing!”

“Right,” Trevor said dryly, glancing down at Sir Clucksalot, who let out a low, annoyed cluck. “What do you think, Clucksalot? Are you ready to save me from a horde of goblins with your firebreathing chicken powers?”

Sir Clucksalot pecked at Trevor’s ear in response.

“Yeah, that’s encouraging,” Trevor sighed.

A rustle in the bushes ahead caught Trevor’s attention. He froze, gripping his frying pan tighter. The sound grew louder, then suddenly—out of the shadows—four goblins leaped out at him with grins plastered across their green faces. They were small, scrappy creatures, each wielding a jagged knife or a wooden club.

“Uh oh,” Trevor muttered. “Okay, here goes nothing.”

The first goblin lunged at him, but Trevor was ready. He swung his frying pan with all the strength he could muster, connecting with the goblin’s head. The creature was sent flying into a nearby tree with a resounding thud.

Critical Hit! Goblin Defeated.

“Hey, that actually worked!” Trevor blinked.

“See? I told you!” GL1TCH cheered. “Now, finish the rest of them!”

Trevor barely had time to register the victory when another goblin rushed him from the side. He swung the pan again, but this time the goblin ducked and slashed at his arm. Trevor yelped, stepping back as pain shot through his shoulder.

“Okay, that wasn’t part of the plan!” he groaned. “Sir Clucksalot, do something!”

The Pyrocluck ruffled its feathers and, with a determined cluck, flapped its wings—sending a small burst of flame directly into the second goblin’s face.

The goblin screamed in terror as it ran in circles, trying to put out the fire.

Critical Hit! Goblin Defeated.

Trevor gaped. “Wait... did Clucksalot just save me?”

Sir Clucksalot puffed out its chest proudly.

“Okay, now I’m really starting to get used to this,” Trevor said, a grin tugging at his lips.

He spun around just in time to face the third goblin, who was charging at him. This time, Trevor didn’t wait for it to get too close. With one smooth swing, he smacked the goblin across the face with the frying pan. The goblin crumpled to the ground.

Critical Hit! Goblin Defeated.

Trevor exhaled, looking around for the final goblin.

“That’s three down,” he said, catching his breath. “One to go.”

Before he could react, the last goblin appeared, sneaking up behind him with a jagged blade raised. Trevor spun around, but the goblin was too quick—it slashed at him again, this time catching him across the back.

He hissed in pain and staggered back, clutching the wound.

“Not good,” Trevor muttered, trying to stay on his feet. “Clucksalot, where are you?”

The Pyrocluck seemed to sense his distress. It let out an aggressive squawk and lunged at the final goblin, pecking at its face with alarming speed.

The goblin screamed, swiping its knife at the chicken. Sir Clucksalot dodged and retaliated with a burst of fire so intense it nearly set the goblin’s tunic ablaze.

Critical Hit! Goblin Defeated.

Trevor collapsed to the ground, clutching his back as the final goblin fell. “You’re a lifesaver, Clucksalot,” he wheezed.

Sir Clucksalot strutted over to him, pecking at the ground like nothing had happened.

“You really did it,” Trevor said, half-laughing, half-crying in disbelief. “We just took out an entire goblin squad with a frying pan and a fire-breathing chicken.”

GL1TCH piped up. “See? You totally got this.”

Trevor blinked and smiled, despite the pain. “I don’t know how much longer I can keep up with this madness.”

He reached into his inventory for a healing potion and winced as he uncorked it. The potion was a disappointing shade of green but, to his surprise, it actually worked, easing the pain in his back and healing the slash.

"Alright, I'm not dying yet," Trevor muttered. "What now, GL1TCH?"

“Now you collect your loot!” GL1TCH said, buzzing excitedly.

Trevor groaned but stood up anyway, walking over to the defeated goblins. As he looted their bodies (which was mostly just some poorly made daggers and tattered clothes), he found something unexpected: a small, glowing crystal tucked inside the final goblin’s pocket.

“What’s this?” Trevor asked, picking it up. The crystal hummed with energy.

“That’s a mana crystal!” GL1TCH said. “You can use it to refill your magical energy. Very rare and very useful.”

“Great,” Trevor said, slipping it into his bag. “Another magical thing I don’t know how to use. So, are we done here?”

“Not quite!” GL1TCH said. “You still need to return to town to collect your reward.”

Trevor groaned. “I swear, if they try to take Sir Clucksalot again, I’m setting the whole town on fire.”

Sir Clucksalot let out a defiant cluck, as if agreeing with Trevor’s threat.

“Alright, let’s get back to the inn,” Trevor said, feeling strangely proud of his fiery little companion. “And hopefully, we can rest for five minutes without some ridiculous quest popping up.”

As they made their way back, Trevor couldn’t help but wonder what kind of world he had stumbled into. Whatever it was, it certainly wasn’t boring.

But then again, he thought with a sigh, when had his life ever been simple?

Trevor walked back into the small, bustling town of Draethor, his legs sore from the goblin battle, and his mind still reeling from the strange series of events. Sir Clucksalot was happily perched on his shoulder, clucking every now and then as if gloating over its fiery victory. As they entered the town square, Trevor noticed the usual hustle and bustle of market stalls and townspeople haggling. But everything felt a little... off. Was it the weird clothes everyone was wearing? Or maybe it was just the fact that he was now a frying pan-wielding hero with a fire-breathing chicken companion. GL1TCH buzzed from his pocket. "Well, congratulations! You just slayed four goblins, got a mana crystal, and didn't die. That’s a pretty good first day on the job." “Right,” Trevor muttered, running his fingers through his hair. “Except I have no idea what I’m doing here, and now I have this ridiculous chicken on my shoulder that keeps catching fire. Who thought this was a good idea?” “You’re

Trevor leaned against the jagged stone wall of the dungeon corridor, his breaths echoing in the silence. The flickering light of a torch barely illuminated the narrow path ahead, casting shadows that danced like specters. His trusty sword, Bob, was strapped to his back, humming faintly as if eager for action. “This whole dungeon life thing is overrated,” Trevor muttered, taking another swig from his water flask. He glanced at the crumpled map he’d found in the last dungeon—its edges burned, and the markings on it cryptic at best. The scroll mentioned "breaking the rules," but the only rules Trevor wanted to break were the ones forcing him into another dank, monster-infested cavern. “Why couldn’t the system drop me into a nice meadow or, I don’t know, a beachfront resort?” Before he could lament further, a faint rustling sound reached his ears. Trevor stiffened, his hand instinctively reaching for Bob. The sound grew louder—a mix of hurried footsteps and... jingling coins? Sudden

Trevor sat cross-legged on the cold stone floor, staring at the Fragment of Ascension glowing faintly in his hand. The weight of it felt far heavier than it should, as though the fragment was aware of the destiny it carried. Across from him, Lyra paced back and forth, her leather armor creaking softly with every step. "So," Trevor began, breaking the silence. "How exactly does this thing work? Do I rub it like a genie lamp or—" "Don’t be stupid," Lyra interrupted, rolling her eyes. "The fragment doesn’t work on its own. You need all of them to activate the Ascension Gate." Trevor frowned. "And how many are there?" Lyra paused, leaning against the wall with her arms crossed. "Seven." "Seven?" Trevor groaned. "That’s a lot of running around for someone who’s still trying to figure out how not to die here." "Welcome to the system," Lyra said dryly. "It’s not exactly forgiving." Trevor sighed, tucking the fragment into his inventory. "Fine. So, where do we start?" Lyra smirked. "

Trevor had learned quickly that nothing in this world was as it seemed. The sky above him was the kind of blue that could have been lifted from a dream, while the air felt unnervingly light, as though every breath could be the last. After securing the second Fragment of Ascension in the temple, the three of them had made their way down the mountainside and into a town called Willowbrook. It was nestled in a valley, surrounded by misty forests and sparkling streams, giving it an almost surreal beauty. Yet, as they walked through the town's cobbled streets, Trevor couldn’t shake the feeling that something was wrong. The people who bustled around them seemed to have an air of secrecy about them, eyes darting behind closed doors, whispering when they thought no one was listening. “This place feels off,” Trevor murmured, glancing around. Lyra shot him a look, though it was hard to tell if it was one of agreement or annoyance. "It’s not the people, Trevor. It’s you." "You can’t blam

The deal had been made, but the unease that followed it lingered in Trevor’s chest like a knot he couldn’t loosen. Zane had told them just enough to make them realize how dangerous this new mission could be, but not enough to fully trust him. After all, anyone who knew about the Heart of the Ancients had to be powerful—and more than a little dangerous. The Heart, Zane claimed, was located somewhere deep within the Emerald Caverns, a labyrinthine system of caves that ran beneath the city of Solace, a place no one dared to venture into for centuries. Trevor didn’t like the sound of that. He wasn’t sure if it was the vague threat in Zane’s voice or the fact that the man had seemed far too calm for someone who was supposed to be handing over an artifact with so much power. But they didn’t have much choice. As far as Trevor was concerned, the faster they retrieved this artifact, the sooner they could get back on track with their true goal: finding the remaining Fragments of Ascen

The first light of dawn had barely broken over the horizon when Trevor, Lyra, and Kael set off towards the Emerald Caverns. The map, now carefully rolled up and secured in Trevor’s backpack, was the only guide they had. Solace was behind them, its golden spires barely visible through the trees as they made their way deeper into the forest, toward the rumored entrance to the caverns. The air was thick with humidity, the scent of wet earth and moss creeping up their nostrils with each step. They had been walking for hours, the only sounds being the occasional rustling of leaves or the distant call of birds. But it wasn’t the natural sounds of the forest that kept Trevor on edge. It was the oppressive silence of the world around them—like the forest was holding its breath, waiting for something to happen. “This is taking longer than I thought,” Trevor muttered, adjusting the strap of his bag as his feet sank into the thick mud beneath him. Lyra glanced back at him, her face unr

His gaze darted around the room, searching for the source of the voice. “We need to leave. Now.”Trevor opened his mouth to agree, but before he could, the ground beneath them trembled once again.
