After listening to the self-confident declaration of a soul whom I thought of being unable to speak, I just wanted to sleep for a while.

I suddenly realized that I wasn't conscious enough to understand what I had just heard. What did he just say? A devil could convert into three types of weapons? It was my dream for seven years repeatedly, not the reality.

I… I might be too tired out by long nighty vigils in the last mission.

In front of those two hopeful looks at me from Anne and the soul, I asked with obscuration:

“Pardon me?”

“I can transform into all the weapons you need.” The soul repeated slowly, “And now I wanna sign a contract with you.”

Oh, and I didn't misinterpret anything, right?

Maybe my look was full of distrust and then overflowed, the devil seemed to be dissatisfied. He emphasized coldly:

“I don't lie.” That meant you didn't know that the word “devil” was also used for mischief, dear.

“Okay… Let me reevaluate you, err, wait a minute.” I said, and then, I was between the devil and the deep blue sea.

Every devil raiser had one devil at least. And after signing a contract with the master, they could be able to transform from their initial form into weapons or something like that, which we used to exterminate the bad devils and lead the good ones to the next world. As usual, our devils just could transform into only one thing. Two, three, or four types of weapons were rare to the extent that I had just heard of one case: Mr. Director of the Realm Security Agency (RSA).

My partners in RSA gossiped that he had just three devils but two of them could transform into three types of weapons, and the other one, can even transform into four: whip, sword, spear, and gun.

I didn't know if that was true, but anyway, that was potential. He was our Director, right?

The number of weapons that a devil could convert depended on his or her demonic power, and even their lust in some cases. And I had never heard of any devils understanding his abilities thoroughly before signing because it looked like you could foresee how many eggs that a hen would lay the next day.

It was impossible! I spoke from my seven-year experience!

But what would happen if I told this soul something like “Oh, dude, stop telling jokes and reincarnate now”? He would curse me!

And what would go on if I signed a contract with him recklessly and he just could transform into another pair of gloves?

Haha, I would be mad, absolutely.

“Master, you should sign him.”

This situation may not be bad enough, so Anne clung to me again and then added an extremely big fuel can to the flame.

I turned to look at her beautiful face, and then, I was bewildered unconsciously.

“Why are you supporting him, Anne?” I whispered to her with the volume which was just enough for us, “Didn't you remember two years ago, when I asked you to sign a quite good devil?”

“Err…” She blinked for a while and then pouted, “Nope. What's the problem?”

“You refused him,” I answered softly.

Do you wonder the reason that I didn't sign any devils for seven years continuously? Anne was my problem! Due to my occupation, I had met innumerable devils, most of whom were so nice and strong, but this gorgeous girl prevented me from signing anyone. Then I still remembered a little boy that I met two years ago, he was so cute and…

“You told about that mischief boy in the Saigon river?” Anne remembered with the anger stroke immediately to interrupt my line of thought, “He was disobedient, master, I've said so many times. I have passed away for about half-century, are there any types of the devil that I haven't met?”

“No, he wasn't, you misunderstood him.

“Yes, he was, and he might betray you if you signed at that time.” Anne grabbed my face and then emphasized, “Therefore, we have to find someone innocent, and after seven years, I found this gentle devil.”

I couldn't bear her talking for a second and then I glanced at the devil who was still floating patiently, “Do you see any ‘gentle devil’ boasting that he can transform into all the weapons I need?”

“I…”

“YOU LIED TO ME, YOU BASTARD!”

A jarring voice interrupted our conversation suddenly and made us stop speaking for a while.

Where did that irritating voice come from?

I turned and saw a bewildered look on Anne's face, then I stared at the devil floating over there.

“What did you just say?” I asked and quietly decided that if I saw any doubtful expressions, I would strictly refuse him, no matter what Anne said.

But that devil was still calm and answered.

“It's not me. That voice comes from behind the school building.”

Oh, I forgot that the three of us were in the schoolyard. Since I broke in by climbing through the fence and I didn't have much time to search for the devil, Anne chose to use her forbidden magic, just to summon him from the school. She wasn't care less, because I knew that that day was Sunday and…

“Isn't it Sunday today?” I asked.

“Yeah.” The devil replied, “But this is a high school, you know, physical fighting among students is frequent.”

“You mean someone is fighting right now?” Anne asked, but I could see an exciting look on her face.

The devil nodded, and Anne continued to ask me.

“Master, may we go to watch the fight?”

I looked at the pale hand holding my hand and then sighed.

I admitted that I was really fond of watching the fighting among students when I was a boy, of course, that was a stupid habit, but that was usually unsuccessful also.

I signed a contract with Anne at that time, and thanks to her, I always ran out as fast as I could, whenever someone rushed into the class and screamed “fighting over there”. But it seemed to be cursed in some ways since I couldn't see anything except people hustling themselves into the crowd. My curiosity was smaller than the fear that I might be trampled to death, and no matter what Anne said, I gave up that habit and didn't take her to any violent place, but…

Why was she still excited up to now?

Wasn't my life frightening enough?

I worked with uncountable scary and dangerous creatures, but she never looked at me like that!

“Anne…”

I was intending to advise my devil that fighting was not interesting, but when I just said one word, another annoying voice interrupted me again with some beating sounds.

“PHAM PHUONG CHI, YOU BITCH!” Oh, then we knew the victim's full name.

“Master, does that name sound familiar to us?” Anne asked me suddenly.

“Really?” I rubbed my chin and then nodded, “It seems to be familiar, I think I have heard this name somewhere…”

The devil calmly asked, “A devil raiser and an ordinary person? Are you sure?”

One thought crossed my mind, and then, I ran like a devil toward the school building.

“Master?”

“The girl in the Predestined Map! I remembered! My fiancée! This is my fiancée's full name!”

I had never known that the girl who was my fated fiancee could be this rich. Her house, or mansion for detail, was in the luxurious District One, with the outer decoration wasn’t lower than the most beautiful constructions I had seen in New York, Paris or London. Its historical-like beauty hid behind the huge closed gate, which was about three meters high and gave me the feeling of a cage, a beauteous one for the rare, precious birds only. I didn’t know if it was a personal hobby, but in a devil raiser’s opinion, I could tell you this: they shouldn’t have made the gate too high like this one.According to Phuong Chi’s guide, I came to the right location in just ten minutes. Then I stood in front of the mansion, being invisible before the workers—who were walking back and forth in the garden with a serious expression on their faces, looking up at the glass windows and asking for Phuong Chi without turning back.“Is this your house?” My eyes rolled around, glancing at the garden. I once

Finally, I chose to release all of those spirits. After getting ‘tortured’ by Phuong Chi's tentacles, they were all scared like hell. They begged me for my forgiveness, promising that they would never tell anyone that I used to get there. And of course, they cried in such a fearful and freaky way that spirits usually did, and for short description, that sound made me get goosebumps. In normal cases, I wouldn't trust them. Our Vietnamese had a whole saying ‘devils first, ghosts are second, and the third are students’ to tell about the mischievousness. It's silly to believe in those who used to want to eat you up. But this case was completely different, so I just let them go.“Why do you release them? They might have consumed you, devil raiser.” Looking at those cannibal spirits flying away like rockets, Phuong Chi reached out her limbs to cover my neck, saying with a regretful tone.“I am Xavier, you can call me by

Since we were born with the ability to feel the dead in such an obvious style, spirit speed was a basic standard for us to evaluate their demonic power. Or, briefly speaking, their ‘ranks’.There were plenty of ways to determine how strong a spirit was, such as the way it attacked you, its understanding of its own death, or the lust. But all of them were time-consuming and inefficient as hell, especially for the investigators like me. You know, in a case where the victim still waited for help, who would let you spend all day long asking those spirits about that? Then checking their physical features was another solution, and one way was judging their speed. It was the academic knowledge for young devil raisers. And after years of learning with effort, I can summarize it in one sentence: the faster they were, the stronger they were.

But when Austin had said nothing yet, one of those evil spirits suddenly shouted out with the voice heard like lots of different tones echoed then mixed in a potion of fear. “Run! Run now!” That weird voice turned my head back. I watched those dead souls trying to escape in all the directions. Their figures flickered like flashes, some just drowning themselves in the dark or disappearing in the smoke's way with the rapid pace. And when I was aware of what was going on, there was just an empty place left in front of my eyes, as if those cannibal spirits had never come. “Hmph? Running away?” As a habit, I narrowed my eyes to see clearer. But not so long after that, I recognized I was seeing with my own eyes, which were completely blind in the dark, not the ability I always got from Anne. Everything was pure black, and if I left it there in my mind, it must be the buzzing sound in my ears. The situation of the dead souls hunting us devil raisers was quite

That defiant attitude seemed to be the last thing that I could do, because I immediately vomited a blood puddle right at the moment I came to the intended location. “Ugh… Ugh…” My hand covered the mouth, but the blood didn’t stop overflowing. It moved along my fingers, dying them a freaky red color, then dropped in a fleck of crimson blood on the ground. Everything in front of my eyes was spinning now. It was hard for me to stand still. Both my legs were trembling—a sign showing that I couldn’t use magic for a really long time—and if I did magic once again, it would be the final time in my life. I let my back lean against the cold wall, staying for a while until I didn’t see any blood pouring from my mouth. It took time, but I had no choice. I couldn’t let Diederich arrest me, for all the reasons. First one, I had no time to sit in jail, waiting for someone to come and claim that I was damn innocent, while the devil was running out there and Phuong Ch
