Chapter 182

When Marissa went to get her phone from the balcony and found Laura's name flashing on the screen, she had her stomach knot. All her happiness was gone. She could still see Henry standing, waiting for her. She hesitated for a moment, then swiftly cut the call and turned to Henry, who was now lounging on the couch, flipping through a stack of papers.

“Oh it’s nothing it’s just my troublesome ex," Marissa lied smoothly, slipping the phone into her pocket. "Always calling at the worst times." She rolled her eyes.

Henry raised an eyebrow, his piercing gaze fixing on her. "You okay?"

"Yeah, just annoying," Marissa replied with a dismissive wave, hoping her calm demeanor masked the unease churning inside her. She looked at him to avoid looking away. That would reassure him.

She had missed Laura’s call the day before. She knew deep down, she couldn't keep avoiding Laura's calls forever, especially not when she was supposed to be gathering information for her. She had given her much details
