Lucinda yanked her arm and stood again, taking a few steps back.
“As I said, you do not own me, Damon. I won’t stay here and keep listening to this. Excuse me.” She started to walk away, but Damon followed her and held her by the waist.
“Lucy, come on. I’m jealous, ok? You are to be my wife and I don’t want you talking to that kind of loser.”
“He is not a loser, ok?” She took a deep breath. “Look, Damon, I know our parents want us to marry and all, but it does not mean we have to.”
“No, we don’t have to, but I want to. I want you.” He held her arm, making her stop walking. “Lucy, please. I want to be the man by your side.”
He was looking at her with pleading eyes, but she couldn’t stand him. Yes, he was dazzling handsome and most of the girls were falling for him. But Lucy couldn’t stand his personality.
“I know. But then… please, let me be for a while. I need space. And you need to stop acting like this.”
Damon remained quiet. At first, he was reluctant to marry Lucinda Fairfax. Her family had an agreement with his family and his father was pressuring him. When he saw Lucinda, he changed his mind immediately. She was gorgeous, and smart. The only problem was that she had too much brains and opinion.
“OK, I’ll try. But you have to try to be with me, too.” He asked and Lucy nodded after a while. She had no choice, so it was better if they had at least a good coexistence.
Once at home, Brandon is feeling very different. Lucinda, or how he called her in his head, Lucy, was amazing! She was pretty, smart and a good person. He liked to spend time with her, until her boyfriend, Damn, arrived.
Brandon chuckled, sadly. He really didn’t have good luck, because the girl who seemed to be genuinely nice to him, without expecting anything and even almost got into trouble for defending him, was already with someone. But then, thinking about it he couldn’t remember one single moment she seemed happy around Damon.
He shook his head, trying to avoid those thoughts, because they had no use, after all. Why keep thinking that the girl he was feeling attracted to had another man? Damon Montgomery was rich, handsome, older and everything a girl would want to have by her side.
‘If you accepted to get back to your family, you’d have much more than him’, a little voice reminded Brandon, but he pushed it away. No. If he got back to his family and Lucinda decided to pursue him for that, he would be more than disappointed. And, of course, even with the money, he was still not as attractive as Damon, who was clearly a GYM guy, all muscles - but Brandon was taller.
After his shower, he went to his desk to study and that was when he decided to look at one of the social media sites. He was not there, but it wouldn’t hurt to take a peek. Maybe if he kept his eyes on what was going on around the internet, he could be more aware of people not only making fun of him, but maybe even prevent being beaten and bullied.
Brandon created an account and he saw Lucinda there. He saw that she didn’t have her relationship status visible, and her posts were very beautiful, mostly poems. A smile curled on his lips. She was a sweet girl.
Then, he saw someone that was not that unknown to him. A young man that looked very different from Lucinda, but yet, it stated there they were brother and sister. Brandon knew that guy: Rindley Fairfax.
They met years before, when they were still in elementary school and Rindley didn’t change a single bit, it is, he had matured, of course, but it was visible they were the same. And Brandon wondered if the young man changed his character, because he was something like Kayle, just more useless. And he remembered Rindley mentioning having a twin sister. Could that be…Lucinda? But they looked nothing alike!
Brandon decided to keep looking at her profile later, because at the moment, he had tons of college homework to do.
The next day, people were not messing with him and he wondered why. But, shrugging, he walked to the building where his first class would take place. Lucinda was already there and she looked even more beautiful. She lifted her eyes and saw Brandon, then, a big smile appeared on her lips. Brandon decided to walk to her, but Damon sat right next to Lucinda and her face sank a bit. Brandon felt like dragging the man out of the classroom and keeping him away from Lucy. She was not comfortable!
“Hey there, Brandon!” Damon said with clearly fake enthusiasm. “Come sit around here!”
What Damon really wanted was to keep his eyes on Brandon, just in case the loser tried anything funny with Lucinda.
“I didn’t know you had this class with us.” Brandon said when he approached. “Good morning, by the way.”
No, Brandon was not the talkative type, but for some reason, he didn’t want to stay quiet when near Damon, especially because the man was with his arms around Lucy's shoulders.
“Morning!” She answered, happier and that warmed Brandon’s heart.
“Morning, Bran.” Damon answered, his smile faltering. “And no, this is not a class of mine, but since mine was canceled, I decided to spend some time with my girl.” He kissed Lucy’s cheek.
“I see.” Brandon sat in the chair in front of Lucy and started to unpack his belongings. He looked around and there was no sign of Kayle and his friends.
“They got suspended for a few days.” Lucy whispered to Brandon and he nodded, without turning around.
The professor arrived not long after that and the class started. By break time, Damon had to leave and he seemed uneasy to go, but his father called him. Brandon didn’t move, until he felt someone touching his shoulder. No, not touching, poking him. He turned around and Lucy was looking at him.
“Wanna go have lunch?” She asked and glanced at the door.
“Sure. And Damon?”
Lucy was already on her feet, and it seemed like she was in a hurry.
“He won’t be able to make it. Let 's go!” Brandon didn’t answer a thing, he just followed her.
Then, when they were walking to the parking lot, something occurred to Brandon: what if that was a trap? What if she was all nice to him before and that was nothing more than an act. She is the sister of Rindley Fairfax and for all BRandon knew, he could still be the same malicious jerk from the past.
“Ah, Lucinda… I think I need t-” But before Brandon could say a thing, Lucinda, who was a bit ahead of him and had stopped walking to listen to him, was pulled to the side, behind a wall.
Brandon leaned forward to run, but the doubt about her lying to him was too strong. Her little squeak made him snap out of the transe. It was better to get beaten than just stand by and do nothing in case the girl was innocent.
Three guys were cornering her and Lucinda was glued to the wall, trying to avoid their touch.
“Leave her alone!”
The three men turned to Brandon and looked him up and down. The taller, probably their leader, started to laugh. Brandon was tall, around 6,5”, but he was skinny and the three guys were not buke, but much stronger than him. “Sod off, idiot.” The taller guy said. “You leave her be and I’ll go with her.” Brandon answered and the three of them made weird sounds, mocking him. “She is having fun with us, now, get the fuck out of here! Unless you wanna have fun, too.” The bunker one threatened, taking a small knife from his pocket. “Bran, go and get help!” Lucy said and received a slap across her face. It busted her lips and Brandon couldn’t stand by and watch. He did something he never did for himself, he fought.Of course, he had no chance against one of those guys, let alone two of them. The third one just stayed around Lucy, trying to kiss her and roaming his hands over her body. After a while, Brandon, who was on the floor and raised by his shirt, fell to the ground with a thud wh
The next day, Lucy didn’t go to college, but Brandon did and people looked at him strangely, since he was clearly hurt, but nobody asked him if he was alright or if he needed help. Not that he would ever think they would. Damon saw Brandon and turned his head, pretending he didn’t know him. Brandon chuckled. Of course, it was all an act to impress Lucy. How predictable, huh? Brandon just walked to the building. It was Friday and he couldn’t wait for the day to be over.Nobody picked on him, but he saw some girls looking at him with a certain curiosity, but none talked to him, so he just shrugged and let it be. “Mr. Ashford, may we have a word?” Professor Ramirez asked when Brandon was about to leave class. “Of course, Professor.”The class was soon empty and the tall, dark man leaned on his desk with his back to it, folding his arms in front of his chest and looking at Brandon. “I’ve heard you got into a fight. And for what I can see, that was not a good one.” Brandon sighed befo
After they talked, Mr. Jin showed Brandon the Gym and all the places he would have to clean and what he would have to use. “Is it too complicated?” He asked Brandon, who shook his head ‘no’. “Good, good. The GYM is about to close, so you might start with the rooms already empty.” “Thank you, sir.” Brandon said and Mr. Jin stopped walking. He turned to Brandon and smiled. “You might prefer to call me Jin Sasong, since I’ll be your instructor from now on.” He said. “You’ll learn how to address properly your superiors. Don’t worry. I am a Grandmaster.” “Oh, I’ll remember that… Jin Sasong.” Brandon said and bowed. “Good boy. Now, off to work.” Mr. Jin left and Brandon went to grab his utensils and start to work. As much as the academy was not huge, he wanted to make it neat, cleaning every little halter. Mr. Jin was being very nice to him and he didn’t want to disappoint him, nor Mr. Ramirez. While he was cleaning, Brandon heard people talking here and there until he heard somet
The next day, Brandon woke up feeling so much better! He prepared his breakfast, took another shower - he liked to start his day very clean - and turned on his computer. He wanted to take a look at Lucy and maybe she had posted something about her state. She didn’t go to class and he worried she was unwell. He entered her page and saw there was nothing about her. Opening her album, he scrolled again through her pictures. Yes, he felt a bit ashamed as if he was stalking the girl. ‘You ARE stalking her!’, his conscience screamed at him, but he pushed her away and got back to what was interesting: Lucy. She was so beautiful and full of life. Even through the pictures he could see she emanated light. Her energy was clean, pure. Perfect. He had never thought of anyone like that, but Lucy had no other word to describe her. PER-FECT. After a few minutes, Brandon decided he had things to do and couldn’t waste more time. Not that praise Lucy was a waste of time. He shook his head. What the
Brandon fought the urge to roll his eyes, because he knew nothing good would come out of that. “You keep pretending that I’m not here, Brandon, and you’ll regret it.” Taking a deep breath, Brandon decided he didn’t have to hold his tongue as well. “Something you should do, Kayle: pretending that I am not here. I believe the time you spent at home was not enough, was it?” Kayle looked at Brandon with fire in his eyes. “You think you’re funny, right?” Kayle approached his face from Brandon’s, but this time, it didn’t cause any reaction. As a bully, Kayle was like those chinese finger traps: the more you pull, the more it sticks to your fingers. It was what kept him alive, fed. And Brandon was tired of giving fuel to Kayle. The difference was that he would not just stay by and get beaten. “It doesn’t matter what I think on this matter. You should try to use your time better. Like…” Brandon got closer to Kayle and whispered. “Like helping your father to make the family’s compan
Brandon arrived at the Park and looked around the fountain, finding Lucy sitting on one of the benches there. He walked to her and the moment she saw him, her pale face brightened.“Oh, Brandon!" SHe got up and threw her arms around his neck, or the closest she could get from it. She acted out of impulse, caughting not only Brandon by surprise, but herself. “I-I’m sorry.” She said, looking down, shy.“It is okay, Lucy. How have you been? I mean, you never answered my message and I didn’t know what to do.”“Sorry.” She said and sat again, patting the space next to her and Bandon sat as well. “I… Let’s say things at home are a little bit complicated at the moment.”
*WHEN LUCY WAS AWAY. FLASHBACKS*FridayAfter Lucy was dropped off at the house by Brandon, she was more than pale, shaking from what she'd been through with those men.“What the hell happened to you? Did you see a ghost?” Rindley asked, holding a plate of goodies, ready to head back to his room. He looked at his sister with a certain jocular stare.Lucy just looked at him seriously and walked up the stairs, not responding at all. He watched her and shrugged, walking up the stairs, too, but heading into the opposite hallway. As soon as the door closed behind her, Lucy leaned her back against it and let her backpack drop to the floor with her. While with Brandon, she didn't feel so bad, so exposed. His mere presence warmed her body. Now, alone and back in the house she didn't feel like home, Lucy just cried, desolated. After some time, she went to the bathroom to take a shower and took off her clothes. As she was about to put them in the laundry basket, she stopped and looked at the ga
Monday arrived and Brandon headed off to college, anxious to know whether or not Lucy would show up for classes. He feared that she hadn't just been away for a week, but that she wouldn't come back to Illinois Wesleyan University anymore.;When he got there, he found Damon tangling his fingers in Lucy's hair, while she kept her face serene, eyes downcast, writing down something.“Yes, I am very lucky indeed!” Damon was talking to another guy, super smiling.“When will the wedding be?”“After we finish college, we will spend a year of official engagement before society and then we can get married.” Damon said and leaned down to kiss the corner of Lucy's mouth. Despite her face downcast, Brandon noticed the movement of her mouth, indicating that she wasn't satisfied.“Get in or out of the way!” A messy haired girl yelled at Brandon, startling him. He entered and stepped to the side to give the girl passage. When he looked ahead, his gaze and Lucy's met. For a few seconds they stared at
