As Simon heard the news, he broke into tears and wept like a baby. Finally, his prayers had been answered, and he would soon see his loved ones.

Just as he was about to leave, the inspector said one more thing. “You can actually leave right now if you’re ready. Also, your jail time won’t be on your record anymore because you did an exemplary job in prison. Now you are free for life. Congratulations, Mr. Simon.” The inspector stretched out his hand to congratulate Simon.

Simon accepted the handshake and tightened his grip and said, “Thank you, sir.”

He hurriedly left the inspector’s office, changed into his clothes, and boarded the next available taxi. He quickly gave his house address to the driver.

Upon arriving at his destination, he couldn’t imagine the expression on Ash’s face. Would she be shocked, surprised, or happy?

He just couldn’t wait. As he turned the door knob, he breathed in the scent of his little abode. But before he could fully appreciate the scent, he saw clothes scattered all over the living room. Though Ash wasn’t the most clean and organized person, it had never been this bad.

Maybe she had changed too. He had also changed, with his fully bearded face. He ignored that and started climbing the stairs but suddenly realized he hadn’t bought chocolates or flowers to surprise her. He quickly pushed away that thought, reminding himself that he was the present.

As soon as he reached their bedroom, he realized the door was not locked, and he could hear voices—Ash’s and a masculine voice he couldn’t exactly pinpoint but felt was very familiar.

Tired of trying to figure out who the voice belonged to, he entered the bedroom, scared that what he would see might break his heart.

As he entered, he saw a very intimate and intense scene: Ash was straddling Liam. They were both panting in ecstasy, so engrossed in their actions that they didn’t notice Simon had already come in.

Simon clapped his hands and said, “What a welcome surprise you both had organized for me.”

He said in a bitter, heart-wrenching voice, “Ash, is this what I get for everything I did for you? Do you even know what I went through for me to be here with you? Do you even understand?”

Ash suddenly opened her mouth and said, “Wait, don’t tell me you see yourself as a hero just because you went to prison for my brother.”

Ash chuckled and said, “Lol. If it wasn’t for my grandfather pitying you and giving you a roof over your head, do you think I would be with you? You’re a broke bloke. You are really a dumbo.”

Before Simon could give her a befitting reply, Liam quickly interjected, “Do you know how much it takes to sustain Ash’s lifestyle? You definitely don’t know anything about it. Just because you went to jail for a short time— and it wasn’t like you were forced, were you?”

After what seemed like a century of silence, Simon spoke in a low, calm voice. “You’re right. No one forced me to do jail time for your brother, Ash. Yes, I did it out of my love for you, and I agree it was my fault. Fine, right? Anyway, what about the promise you made to me regarding my foster mother? I hope she’s fine. Can you tell me which hospital she’s currently receiving treatment in?”

As soon as he finished speaking, both Ash and Liam burst into fits of laughter. After laughing so hard that tears started streaming down her cheeks, Ash said, “Wait, did you really believe me? Now I believe that you are a dumbo.”

“I said all that just to make you feel special, nothing more. Don’t you understand? Anyway, I haven’t heard anything about your foster mother since you left.”

Simon sucked in air, gritted his teeth, and clenched his fists. “What do you mean? You lied to me. Do you t—”

Before he could finish his sentence, Ash said, “Yes, I think you are a joke. But before you start blabbering on…” She threw some papers at his feet and said, “Here are our divorce papers. I already signed mine, and you need to sign yours now. Remember, you’re not going to get a share of the Katherine family properties. Now, if you still know where the door is, get out. As you can see, I still have some unfinished business here.”

As Simon turned to leave, he said, “Ash, trust me, I’ll be back for you.”

Simon quickly bolted down the stairs and ran down the street to his mother’s old peoples hospital

As he arrived at the old people’s hospital, he asked the front desk officer in an exasperated voice, “Where’s my mother?”

The receptionist asked, “Who are you? I don’t remember ever seeing you as a relative here.”

Simon understood her confusion, given how drastically his appearance had changed. “I’m Simon. My mother is Mrs. Helen.”

The receptionist said, “Oh, where have you been all this while? Even after learning about your mother’s chronic disease. You are such an unfilial child. No mother should have a child like you. Mtcheww!”

Ignoring her reprimand, Simon ignored her and asked if she was still in her previous room.

The receptionist sighed deeply and adjusted her glasses, looking up at Simon with a mixture of impatience and frustration. “Well, we tried waiting for you since you are a regular client. We made several attempts to contact you about your mother’s condition and impending relocation. But, as time passed and there was still no word from you, we could no longer keep her here. We had to make the difficult decision to send her packing.”

Simon’s face fell as he absorbed the weight of her words. “Where did she go?” he asked, his voice tinged with desperation and fear. “Please, you have to tell me.”

The receptionist’s expression softened slightly at Simon’s visible distress. She rifled through a stack of papers on her desk, her fingers moving quickly as she searched for the relevant documents. “Let me see,” she muttered, flipping through the pages. “Yes, here it is.” She retrieved a piece of paper from the pile and looked back at Simon.

“What I remember,” she said, her tone more considerate now, “is that she went with a nurse she was very close to. The nurse had been visiting her regularly and seemed quite concerned about her well-being. We handed over her belongings and informed her of the situation. The nurse assured us that she would take good care of your mother.”

“Here’s her contact number and address.”

Simon uttered a thank you in response to her good deed. He had to trek to the address as he didn’t have any cash with him. Luckily, it was within walking distance.
