The news of the anonymous successor spread quickly through Rovers County and beyond. People gathered in groups to analyze the situation.
“Mr. R.R.? Even the original owner did not make himself anonymous. How preposterous of this new successor!” Lady Margarita was not pleased with the news of Mr. Rover’s anonymous successor. She was seated in the courtyard, not far away from the pool like she usually did. All her five grandchildren were seated around her. She had summoned them when she heard the news of the anonymous successor.“If I were a member of the staff, I would protest working for an anonymous boss.”Lionel had a heavily-built body that made him look bigger than his age.“And put yourself at risk of getting sacked? Well, it’s just for a year. It’s not like his anonymity is affecting us in any way. I’m sure he has his reasons.” Diana had a different view.“You call a year ‘just’? Do you know how much I had been eager to know who the successor is so we could make friends with him and strike more deals with Rovers Group?” Lady Margarita looked angrily at Diana who kept quiet and said no more. She could see that her grandmother was not in a good mood.“Granny, don’t stress yourself. What more do you expect her to say? Her loser husband has infected her with stupid opinions.... It’s just so shocking that it’s not Victor Sterling. I wonder how he feels now.”“Yeah. Victor Sterling. I think you should meet with him, Andre. There is no way he will not have a clue on who the successor could be.” Lady Margarita instructed.“Trust me, granny. I will do beyond your request. I will unveil the anonymous CEO.”“Hmmmm…..That name, R.R., I’m thinking about what it could possibly mean.” Dean pointed out.“I’m sure one of the R is Rovers.” Liam observed.“No. There is no surviving Rovers. That’s a certainty.”“We can’t be too sure. Maybe he adopted a child.”“No. He was too sad by the plane crash to think of that.”“You all speak like you are family and you live with him. Anything could have happened behind the scene. He might actually have a surviving family, maybe a distant relative or something.” Diana expressed her diverse view yet again.“You speak too much for someone whose husband is not worth the cost of my belt; someone whose husband has contributed nothing but bad luck to the family. Just keep quiet and watch intelligent people talk about important things.”“Andre, be gentle. That’s my sister you are talking to.” Dean defended.“Oh! She’s your sister now? You speak as if you don’t say worse.”“To her husband; not to her.” Dean corrected.Just as Andre was about to reply to Dean, Ralph rode in on his bicycle. Immediately, the focus of the discussion shifted to him.“Ralph, the gardener. Wait, why has Mr. R.R. not sacked you yet?”“That’s because I’m Mr. R.R., and I can’t sack myself.”That seemed to the Summers like a big joke. Even Diana laughed so hard at Ralph’s outburst. She didn’t know Ralph could be that funny.“You don’t believe me? What if I am?”“I will shave my head if you are the said Mr. R.R.” Lionel vowed.“You will shave the only thing that does not make you look like a monkey? Be ready to shave your head then. It will be a great scene to behold.” Ralph smiled.“I will kneel before you and call you great master.” Andre vowed.“That will be interesting. You have been so disrespectful towards me, and that will be one of the ways to show me some respect.”“Let me add that I will call you my son-in-law and worship you.”“Grandma? You too? Well, I hope you don’t forget to do that when it’s time.”“I, Dean, will wash your feet seven times in a row.”“Wow! Great! But be gentle while you are doing that. Liam? I think you should add your vow. Let me have more vows.”“There is no need to vow because you can never be. At least, not in this lifetime!”“Just add all the same. The others have done theirs. Don’t be left out.”“Wait, his name is Ralph Ross, right? That’s R.R. really, isn’t it?” Andre laughed at his own analysis, and everyone laughed again while Ralph watched them as he leaned against his bicycle.“A joker and a loser! Such a good combination! So, Mr. Rovers would choose you, an uneducated street pauper, as his successor when the likes of Victor Sterling are there. You better stop dreaming and get back to your filthy gardening working before you become jobless!”“Ralph, I think Granny is right! It’s okay that you have two Rs in your name, but don’t go about telling people you are Mr. R.R. of Rovers Group. It may get you a thorough beating, and I wouldn’t want you marked all over your fine body.”“This is the first reasonable advice you would ever give in your 25 years of existence,” Andre said to Diana.Ralph was amused at Diana’s supposed advice. He knew they wouldn’t believe him, but he didn’t want them to believe him yet. He would patiently look forward to giving them the best shock of their lives. When he was done with them, they would beg him for mercy!“Ralph? What was that about?” Diana and Ralph were now in their room. Diana noticed something different about Ralph. He now had the boldness to reply taunts from anyone, even Lady Margarita. The Ralph she knew would keep quiet or walk out of the scene. This new Ralph had responses to any bully!“What was what about? Anyway, thank you for the advice. But, do you believe I’m Mr. R.R.?”“Are you?”“Answer first.”“Well? …Mr. R.R.? How can you be Mr. R.R.? You are not even related to Mr. Rovers. Just a mere gardener in Rovers villa.”“Don’t call my source of income mere, dear. That is not a good thing to say.”That was it. Diana was more sure that Ralph was different. Normally, Ralph wouldn’t object to calling his gardening job ‘mere’ but he now seemed to have an issue with it.“Ralph? Is everything alright with you?”“Why do you ask?”“Normally, you wouldn’t reply my family that way but you did even when I was trying to signal you to keep quiet.”“Don’t read too much meaning into that. I was just having a good time.”“So, you are not Mr. R.R. right?”“No. I’m Ralph Ross, your darling husband.”Diana sighed with relief. Of course, how could Ralph be Mr. R.R.? That was such a ridiculous thought for her to have. Mr. R.R. was Mr. Rovers’ relative who nobody knew.“Granny seemed affected by the news. I wish I could do something.”“The only thing I think you should do is to shut all of them up by beating their expectations. Let no one look down on you, not even your brother or your parents. Come to think of it, you are the only female grandchild in the family. It’s high time you gave yourself that relevance.”“How?”“I will tell you how later. First, let’s go get some fresh air outside.”“Fresh air? Where?”“Just follow me, darling.”That evening, Andre and Victor Sterling convened at Rovers Royale, the epitome of luxury within Rovers County. It stood as the grandest among all Rovers hotels, exclusively frequented by the crème de la crème.It marked a departure from their usual business meetings at Rovers Group. While Victor had represented Mr. Rovers’s interests in numerous business dealings, Andre, as a representative of Summers Luxury Automobiles, had never interacted with him beyond the professional realm. This casual meeting was the first time they connected on a more personal level. Although Andre sought the meeting for genuine conversation, Victor was more in need of someone to talk to than a personal interest in Andre.Andre and Victor were meeting casually for the first time. It had always been business meetings at Rovers Group. Victor had represented Mr. Rovers’s interests in many business meetings of which Andre was part as a representative of Summers Luxury Automobiles. None knew the other beyond the b
Andre saw them first. At first, he concluded they were not the ones. What would the loser be doing there? Someone who couldn’t afford the cheapest hotel in Rovers County! But at a third look, he concluded they were the ones. They were moving towards where he sat with Victor and Stuart, who just joined them.“Diana?”“Andre. Hi!”“What are you doing here?”“What do they do here? What are you also doing here?” Ralph interjected as he settled with Diana at the table opposite Andre. He deliberately chose that location.“How did you enter? What was the guard thinking when he allowed you in?”“Why don’t you go to the guard and ask that silly question?”Stuart wanted to join the conversation, but he did not want Ralph to expose his lie. He had always bragged to the Summers about having the Elite Reserve Card. If he talked, Ralph might put him in a situation where he would be required to show the card to the others. He didn’t want Diana or Andre to know he had been lying all this while. He wo
Soon, the waiter and another waiter brought Ralph’s orders, and Andre, Stuart, and Victor opened their mouths wide. Diana was equally surprised. She didn’t know what Ralph had ticked on the menu but was sure they were the cheapest of the items. But Ralph had gone ahead to order the most expensive wine, food, and dessert! The waiters placed the order in front of Ralph and Diana. The first waiter brought a card reader out.“You have to pay now!” He instructed.“Now, I’m sure he will soon be thrown out. How can he even afford all of those?” Andre said confidently while Victor and Stuart nodded in agreement.Ralph dipped his hand in his pocket and brought out his Elite Reserve Card. The two waiters were stunned to see the cheap-looking man holding the prestigious card. Stuart had seen it before. He only wanted to confirm if it was original. Andre and Victor were surprised yet again. How could a common gardener have such a card that they did not have?“I am sure that is fake. Get ready to
Ralph came out of Rovers Royale with Diana. They had eventually had a nice time out after Andre, Victor, and Stuart had been thrown out. At the entrance, it was another security guard who was there. “Where is Bright Moore?” Ralph asked, looking like someone seeking confirmation. He knew what happened to Bright Moore. It’s a result of his instruction. “He has just been suspended for six months with no pay.” Diana exchanged knowing looks with Ralph. “Really? What is his offense?” “He insulted a customer earlier on. Seemed Mr. R.R. got wind of it and stated his punishment. This new owner now seems to tolerate no nonsense. I wonder if he is a ghost.” Again, Diana looked at Ralph questioningly. “Oh! He should learn to treat people better then. I’m sure the punishment will reform him.” “Do you want to give him a tip, sir? I can collect it on his behalf.” “He doesn’t deserve anything, but let me find you something.” Ralph gave him a few bucks. “Thank you, sir. I will look forward to
The next morning, Diana awoke to find herself alone in bed, Ralph absent beside her. Did he even come home at all? Slowly, the events of the previous night flooded back. As she attempted to rise, Ralph entered, adorned in one of his usual work outfits.“Hello, beautiful.”"And where are you going this time around?" Diana was not in the mood for Ralph’s romantic greetings."Where else? Work, of course. Or have you forgotten I work?""Lol…you call that work? Where did you go last night, Ralph? What's happening?" Diana asked, concern etched in her eyes.“Okay. Now I know why you are tensed. I went to return the card we used yesterday to the owner.”"Return the card? Did it not display your name? How?"“Yeah. You remember my friend from long ago that I told you about? He was the one who did it in my name to repay me for how much I helped him back in Vernice. But I can only use it sometimes with his permission. Isn’t he nice?”“Who is he?”Ralph hesitated before speaking. “You will meet hi
Bridget looked hurt as she sat up and stormed out of the room. At the door, she met Diana who had obviously been eavesdropping. She had come to check up on her grandmother like Ralph advised.“And what are you doing here?” Bridget poured all her anger into the statement, and Diana cowered before regaining her composure.“I…I…I have an urgent message for Granny.” She lied, quietly, not wanting her to know she was there for no cogent reason.“What message could someone like you possibly have to tell the almighty Lady Margarita. We both know that the message is irrelevant, but you make it look like it’s something meaningful. Anyway, I’m not in the mood for this.” She hissed and walked away.Diana thought it was a good time to gain her grandmother’s favour since she was angry with her favorite child and grandchild. She knocked gently and opened the door to Lady Margarita’s room. She just got the proof that Granny only loved Andre because he seemed to be running the family business well.
Ralph carefully parked his bicycle in the bustling premises of Lowell Real Estates and confidently strolled towards the entrance. A multitude of property buyers milled around, but Ralph was not his usual recognizable self. His hair had been restyled, and he sported a mustache and a pair of old glasses, carefully chosen as part of his disguise. His tools had worked seamlessly; he even found it hard to recognize himself in the mirror. Memories of his survival tactics in Vernice, where disguises were a necessity, flashed through his mind.Suddenly, he heard his name being called, causing his heart to skip a beat. Had his disguise failed? Slowly turning around, he identified the caller – Liam Summers. What on earth was Liam doing there?Pretending not to hear his name, Ralph continued walking toward the main entrance. However, Liam persisted and caught up with him. Ralph was already thinking of the explanation he would give for his being there. He didn’t want him to know he was there to
Asphalt's phone rang. It was his boss, Mr. Lowell, calling him. Eagerly, he put the phone on loudspeaker, expecting praise from Mr. Lowell as usual. He would want Ralph and Fancy to know how high and valuable his boss viewed him. However, his excitement turned to shock. “Hell….” Mr. Lowell cut him off and unleashed a barrage of reprimands on him. “You bastard! What are you doing? Is that how to treat a client? Do you know who is before you? A client referred to us by a respected friend who can make Rovers Group withdraw their shares. If they do, we are finished. You idiot. Is Fancy there?” “Yes,…yes sir,” Asphalt stammered. “As from this moment, she is now the director. You will go back to being a receptionist. No! Not receptionist! I wouldn’t want you to tell clients off at the entrance. I will decide a very lowly position for you when I return from my trip. Till then, help the cleaners tidy the premises!” Mr. Lowell's harsh verdict left Asphalt dumbfounded. Asphalt, bewildered,
