Chapter 6
STEPHEN P.O.V
“Isn't it highly time you returned home, sir Stephen?” she said.
“Excuse me?” I replied.
I was both annoyed and perplexed by her question. Like, how the fûck could she ask someone she met at a party such a question?
Her soft chuckle from the other end reminded me that the call hadn't ended yet.
“I know you're confused, sir”
Can someone please ask her to stop addressing me as *sir?*
“But let's meet, and you'll understand everything better” her voice was filled with eagerness and hope as she said this.
Not knowing what to do, and I didn't want to prolong this conversation, I simply nodded my head, but quickly muttered “yes” when I realized she couldn't see me nodding.
There's no harm in investigating this woman's motive, right?
“I'll send you the address immediately we hang up. Let's meet in a few hours' time,”
Hold up… I hope I'm not going to regret this? Because, why do I sense so much urgency in her words?
“Alright, let's do that,” I said, still perplexed by her cryptic message.
We ended the call, and I shoved my phone in my pants' pocket.
“What are you doing, Stephen?” Susan's voice suddenly boomed, and caught me off guard.
I gave her a mean look, my perplexity turning into mild annoyance.
“Can you do me a favor?” I asked, making my voice more assertive.
She nodded eagerly. It's too obvious that she's very ready to help with whatever I need. That is something new.
“Anything for you,”
Anything for me? I smirked triumphantly at that statement, and the fact that she's so humble now that she wants something from me.
“Vamoose out of my way!” I ordered, catching her off guard.
She was greatly taken aback by my tone, and quickly retreated, leaning against the bed for support.
But she didn't let me move an inch, before jumping right in front of me again, and blocked my way.
“I won't let you leave until you go downstairs and tell my parents that you were just joking, and that you didn't know what came over you,” she yelled with a mixture of frustration and desperation.
I could feel my anger rising already, but I tried my best to maintain my composure. I pushed her out of the way forcefully before walking out, leaving her to wallow in her frustration.
Walking inside the living room, Mr. and Mrs. Clinton quickly rose to their feet, their expressions were mixed with surprise and concern.
“What the hell do you think you and your wife are doing? Is this some sort of prank?” Mr. Clinton asked, his voice filled with disbelief.
I scoffed at his assumption. If only he knew this was nothing but the truth…well, I've already told them the truth, it's left for them to believe it or not.
“Bloody answer me!” Mr. Clinton growled. “Is this a joke or what?”
“Do I look like I am joking?” I retorted, feeling offended at how he cursed at me. “I have told you the truth. It's up to you to accept it or not”
Alright, I think I like the new me.
“I'm heading out at the moment, and I'll be leaving this house when I come back,” I said firmly, my words laced with determination…then, stormed out.
As I stormed out of the house, I checked my pocket for some money. Luckily, I still had a few dollars left.
After reaching the bus station, I flagged down a cab and gave the driver my address. I was ready to go and hear the woman out.
Surely, she couldn't have lied to me, right?
********
“We are here,” the cab driver said, jolting me out of my deep thoughts.
Stepping out of the cab, I was greeted by an enormous and extravagant mansion that seemed almost impossible.
I had never seen such grandeur before. Even Susan's home isn't as gorgeous as this. What's happening? Am I having a vision of heaven?
I pinched myself just to make sure, but it seemed that I was indeed awake. I approached the gate and pressed the intercom, prompting a well-dressed man to open it.
The man glared and looked disgustingly at me, from my head to my toes, as though he's accessing my outfit.
“Young man, what are you doing here?” the man asked rudely.
His question and tone of voice made me look at my outfit, then I bite my lower lip when I realized that I didn't quite fit into this opulent setting.
But fûck whatever this buddy thinks. I was given this address and I had to come no matter what.
"I'm here to see the president of Legion, electronic and more,” I replied, maintaining a cool and professional personality.
However, my response elicited laughter from the man, who proceeded to scrutinize my appearance from head to toe again.
“Take a look around” he nodded at the building. “Do you think someone like you is supposed to come ten inches near a place like this?”
“Excuse me?”
“No, excuse me” he snapped. “Now, take a look at yourself…do you really think anyone…" he eyed my sneakers. “...just anyone can just see her? Are you out of your senses?” he scoffed.
This wasn't the first time I had faced humiliation, in fact, my fake in-laws humiliate me every single day, but I must say this man is the rudest man I've ever come across.
“You should leave now,” he concluded in an *end of discussion* tone.
I couldn't help but wonder why he thought I was here as a joke.
“I want to see the president; she gave me this address herself,” I replied, holding on to my resolve.
The man opened the gate, I was expecting him to usher me in, but he did the total opposite. He stepped out to meet me, and locked the gate.
My brows furrowed.
“I said you should leave, are you deaf?” he snarled.
“What?”
“I'll beat you up if you don't leave here this minute. Someone like you must not be seen around here,” he said, his voice filled with aggression.
I'm dumbfounded, but ashamed of myself as well. I lowered my head, realizing that it wasn't entirely his fault, and he's right.
He shoved me forcefully, causing me to stumble, almost falling onto the ground.
Just as this was happening, a car drove into the scene and stopped at a meter away from us.
Someone alighted from it, and to my utmost surprise, it was the same woman whom I met at the party, the same woman who had given me this address.
“What do you think you're doing, Marcus?” she yelled, her voice filled with righteous anger as she approached us.
The man stopped assaulting me abruptly.
“Welcome, Ms…"
“Apologize to him right now!” she demanded, cutting him off.
Without hesitation or even giving the man a chance to apologize as she had demanded, she delivered a resounding slap across his face.
“In fact, don't apologize, you're dismissed! How dare you do that to him!” she exclaimed, her voice seething with fury.
The man appeared visibly surprised, his expression revealing his astonishment that she had slapped him on my behalf. Confusion clouded my mind as I tried to comprehend the situation unfolding before me.
“I am deeply sorry, ma'am. I know I made a mistake, but please don't take away my job. It's the only way I can take care of my family,” he pleaded, tears streaming down his face.
Tears? How can a grown man shed tears so easily?
“Did the head of security train you guys to behave like this? Did he teach you to look down on people?” she asked, her voice firm yet filled with disappointment.
“You're dismissed, as I said,” she concluded decisively.
I stood there, speechless and unable to find the right words. How could she let him go because of me? The weight of the situation settled heavily upon my shoulders, and I felt the need to intervene.
“You have only one option,” she said, her voice carrying a sense of authority.
The man quickly looked up, eagerly awaiting the opportunity. Similarly, I was curious to know what this option entailed.
However, I couldn't help but ponder if this man truly deserved a chance to redeem himself. After all, he wasn't any different from Susan and her family… and one thing I hate most is privileged people looking down on the less privileged people.
“Apologize to him. He is the only one who will decide whether you're staying or not,” she stated, her words taking me aback.
What?
I was surprised at the weight of responsibility she had just placed on me. Who am I to decide the fate of any individual?
Chapter 7STEPHEN P.O.V“Why me?” The word flew out of my mouth, and she responded with a chuckle. “It's simple. He offended you, he should apologize, and you should decide whether to keep him or not since you're the heir,” she explained.Heir? I'm the heir? Heir of what? The man quickly turned to me and fell on his knees.“I'm deeply sorry, sir. Please forgive me. I didn't know who you are, I didn't know you are an important personnel,” he said, his tone very apologetic. I scoffed at his statement, realizing he was missing the point. No one is entitled to insult or embarrass anyone based on their status. Everyone is equal before God and the law.“I'm deeply sorry, sir, please forgive me” he lamented.Another drama…I have had enough of dramas today to last a lifetime.“You may rise” I reached forward to help him up. “I have forgiven you, but you must learn to treat everyone equally. We are all equal, and you must ensure this does not happen again” I said firmly. He quickly nodded h
Chapter 8STEPHEN P.O.VAm I ready? I've been through a lot, I've been to hell and back. I shouldn't let this opportunity pass, I can't let this opportunity pass. There are numerous things about me that I want to find out, there are numerous mistakes I wish to correct in my life, and if working at this company can provide that opportunity, then I am fully prepared.“I'm ready” I responded with determination. Karen let out a loud, relieved breath. It's obvious she was holding her breath, she feared what my answer would be.“I was afraid you might not be ready” she said, “The chairman is getting older, and it is crucial for him to pass on the responsibilities to his child. And thankfully, you appeared at the perfect time, and it will undoubtedly bring positive changes to your life and status,” Karen expressed, her words filling me with happiness. Just hearing this news was enough to brighten my day."So sorry for not offering you anything, I was just too happy to see you" she says.
Chapter 9STEPHEN P.O.VShe was taken aback by my request. Her eyes widened, and her jaw dropped slightly as she processed what I had just asked. “What did you mean? You can't do such a thing,” she exclaimed, her voice tinged with disbelief.I opened my mouth and was ready to enlighten her, but she didn't give me any chance.“Do you want the chairman to grill me? I can't accept that, it's not possible,” she said, her tone filled with a mix of anger and disbelief, firmly rejecting my offer. In response, I paused, considering her objections and also thinking of ways to convince her.“Come to think of it, I can't take over the company like this,” I stated thoughtfully. “I know nothing about the business world. If I'm truly the heir like you said, then I must learn from the root” I explained calmly.Karen nodded thoughtfully at my words, which encouraged me to continue. “So, I think working as a cleaner will be better, It'll make me familiar with the workers and the environment,” I add
I was taken aback when I saw Albert, Susan's cheating partner, standing in front of me. Words like philanderer and home wrecker came to mind as I tried to process the situation. In the character’s point of view, the description could go something like this:I was frozen in place, unable to comprehend what I was seeing. There he was, the man who impregnate nmy ex wife, the man who have been sleeping with my wife, sitting right in front of me. I couldn’t believe it. I felt like the ground had been pulled out from under me. However, I knew I had to maintain professionalism, even though deep down I felt this guy didn't deserve my respect. "I am here to work," I responded, attempting to remain respectful despite my conflicting emotions. "You being a worker here? That's a joke, right?" she scoffed, her disbelief evident. "How did you even manage to get a work here? Who in their right mind advised you to come here as an intern?"I took a deep breath, refusing to let his condescending tone
"Drag him out," he barked, his words causing me to fight back horselaugh. Who did this fool suppose he was, ordering people around to forcefully remove me? "Are you certain you want to go through with this?" I queried, meeting his furious aspect "What are you all standing around for? Drag this imbecile out of my office now!" he screamed, egging the guards to fleetly approach me. Digging into my fund, I recaptured the appointment letter given to me by Mrs. Karen. I extended it towards him, watching as a mixture of surprise and unbelief flashed across his face. His eyes widened in shock, his jaw slackening ever so slightly as he took in the sight of the appointment letter in my outstretched hand. I could see the astonishment marshland over his face, rendering him temporarily speechless. A profound sense of unbelief sounded to stamp his former address, as if he could not sound the possibility that I had some licit claim to be there. The color drained from his face, leaving a pal
Chapter 12 "Did you know," Albert's voice reverberated through the walls of his office, his frustration visible. "You're inside my office? You don't intrude on my working place!" In response, a hearty chuckle escaped from my lips, filling the room with a sudden burst of lightheartedness. Susan, swiftly shifted her gaze towards me, her eyes widening in a mixture of shock and curiosity. The shock on her face spoke volumes, a perfect reflection of her surprise. "What's he doing here?" Susan's voice was filled with disbelief, her eyes darting between Albert and me. "Did you both plan this?" Her surprise was vividly displayed on her face, unable to conceal her confusion. "Leave my office!" Albert's stern command echoed through the room, his voice leaving no room for argument. "We will talk later once I close from work." Despite his demand, Susan seemed undeterred as she stepped closer towards me, her determination clear. "You planned this with him, right?" Her accusation hung heavil
Chapter 13Stephen POVI take a deep breath, then start to inspect the machinery. I studied the controls, the wiring, and the moving parts. I can feel the eyes of the workers on me, but I try to block them out and focus on the task at hand. Then, I notice something, a loose wire. It's out of place, and I have a feeling that's what's causing the problem. I reach out and carefully adjust the wire, then wait to see if it works. After a few tense seconds, the machinery starts to rumble to life. The workers let out a collective sigh of relief, and I felt a wave of relief wash over me. I did it! The assembly line is running again. But there's no time to celebrate; there's still work to be done. I turn to the workers and say,"Let's get this line back up and running! It's nice meeting you all. I'm Stephen Owen, one of the new interns." I smiled, and they gave me a warm welcome. I feel so honored and dignified. This is the least respect I have gotten so far. I feel a tinge of release after th
Chapter 14."Why, Sir?" I replied with a puzzled expression, as I wasn't sure why President Karen would suddenly change my supervisor. He gave me a stern glare."She has heard about what you did at the company today, so she wants you to have a different superior." His words were filled with anger and annoyance, causing me to scoff in disbelief. As I let out a laugh, he shot me a warning look. "Why are you laughing? Have you forgotten that I am still your boss? Don't do anything that will make me angry. I also know how to pull some strings to get you out of here. I am just trying to be kind," he replied, asserting his authority. I simply nodded my head."You don't respond with a nod, I expect you to reply with your voice," he stated firmly, causing me to let out a scoff in response. "May I take my leave now?" I asked, attempting to maintain a polite manner despite feeling frustrated. "Yes, you may leave. But before you go, do you genuinely believe Susan is pregnant?" he asked, an al
