Mother love

I hesitated, unsure of what to do. A part of me wanted to know what she wanted and why she was calling now, while the other part of me was terrified of hearing her voice again.

"Come on, we need to find out what she wants," she urged, taking the phone from my hand. She swiped the answer button and held the phone up to her ear.

"Hello?" she said in a measured tone, taking the lead in the conversation. There was a brief pause as the line crackled to life with a response. I held my breath, my heart racing.

"What do you want?" I asked, her my steady and unemotional. I was playing it cool, determined not to give the caller any power over the situation.

"I want you to send the money to me," the caller said, her voice as cold as ice. "And if you don't do it, I'll release all the information I have on you."

My stomach sank as I heard the words. I wasn't sure that she had something on me, something that could ruin my life. But what could it be? And why is she doing this to me?
