Alex's footsteps echoed through the dimly lit hallway as he entered his home on the Friday night of the week, when his parents announced the arranged marriage between him and Isabella.
The air felt heavy with an unsettling tension. As he stepped into the living room, his eyes widened in disbelief.
Her pictures adorned every available space, transforming the familiar surroundings into an unsettling shrine. The frames hung meticulously, capturing the nooks and crannies of his living room. The room, once a sanctuary, pulsated with a strange energy.
"What an audacious act." A surge of anger erupted within him as his gaze fixated on the intrusive display.
His normally composed demeanor shattered, and his head turned blank, consumed by a fiery rage. The audacity of her act struck him like a thunderbolt.
The wall was only filled with a variety of pieces of artwork, and he found it comfortable that way. He didn't know why some persons liked hanging their pictures' frames on the wall because he saw no relevance in it.
"What on earth are all these?!" He dropped his suit coat on one of the sofas as he paced to the stairs, shouting her name.
"Baby boy. You're welcome, honey." As Alex opened his room's door, he was met with the unexpected sight of her pacing towards him, even though he had known of her presence in his home.
His bedroom was his personal space, which he didn't like anybody to be in except for him.
She threw her arms wide, reaching out for a hug, but Alex stood stoically. He didn't retaliate with an embrace, leaving her outstretched arms lingered and suspended in the air.
Alex couldn't believe his eyes at the modifications she had made to his room.
The room was so personal to him that every arrangement and thing there were of significance to him, but she had invaded what he did call his private space.
"Aren't you happy to see me?" She lifted her chin forward to meet his gaze directly.
"What are you doing here? Besides, how did you get in?" He moved his face sideways to avoid making eye contact with her.
"Your dad gave me a spare key to unlock the entrance door since you had been avoiding their calls and mine for days, and why are you questioning my presence here? Am I not your babe?"
He moved away from her to his bed in regret; his face was downturned towards the tiled floor.
Just like he had been, he regretted being his parents' puppet and not fighting for his independence from them, because how could a key to a grown man's house like him still be with his parents?
"But you should have informed me about your arrival. What if I'm away on a business trip?"
"That's not a big deal. I would definitely wait, darling." She brushed his hair tenderly while she beamed in smiles.
The sweet names she was calling him irked him, but there was nothing he could do about it since he was stuck with her.
He could not believe that she was okay with the whole arrangement.
"Isabella, tell me, are you good with this?" He looked into her eyes while holding her hands.
"What?"
"This whole thing—"
"You mean this marriage?" She cut in.
He scoffed at hearing the word 'marriage'.
"Yes. This arranged marriage." He replied.
"It's what our parents want and consider to be good for—"
"What about you? Are you cool with it?"
"Yes, of course." She chuckled.
Her reply weighed him down. Although he had known that she liked him, he had hoped that what he felt for her would have diminished because he did shove and stay away from her like a plague whenever she threw herself at him in the past. She had once seduced him to have sex with him when they were teenagers, but he was able to overcome her temptation and assault.
"Don't you think we are taking this too fast?" He devised another means to convince her.
"What do you mean, darling?"
He wondered why she couldn't stop smiling because he found her smiles disgusting.
"Easy does it, right? I think your move here is too sudden. How about we give what is between us time?" He said.
"Whether it's sudden or not, conventional or not, I don't care. You have no idea how long I've yearned for this moment."
"But—" She shut him up by planting a kiss on his lips, and he instinctively shoved her.
"It's okay, my love." She smiled for the umpteenth time.
"It can never be, Isabella. Why can't you just reason with me for crying out loud?" He cried out.
"Don't worry, darling. It would be." Her sudden burst of passion caught him off guard.
She pushed him onto the bed. The sudden landing on the bed's plush surface barely registered as her fervour intensified. With an intensity that seemed to engulf the space, she leaned over him, attempting to climb on top of him and showering him with a cascade of kisses on every inch of his face.
"Isabella, please stop it." His plea echoed in the room, a continuous refrain that underscored his discomfort.
Despite his verbal resistance, he squirmed, attempting to evade her advances. However, his attempt to move away from under her was met with resistance, as Isabella, fueled by desire, had effectively pinned him down, her intent clear in the magnetic force that held him captive, leaving him with limited mobility.
He decided to play along. He feigned submission, allowing her to believe she had the upper hand as his body went limp under her hold.
As she momentarily let down her passionate assault, thinking she had triumphed, Alex seized the opportune moment. With a sudden burst of strength, he swiftly reversed their positions, pushing her away and regaining control of the situation.
He groaned in annoyance and left the house.
He called his dad immediately as he entered his car.
"What a memorable day it is for you to call me."
He apologised for ignoring his father's calls and texts, saying that he was busy.
"I know you'd end up getting along, but we all hope you do soon. We are all anticipating your wedding anniversary." He replied when Alex complained about the arrangement and Isabella packing in.
He immediately ended the call because his father seemed to be worsening the issue.
He called Henry immediately and asked where he was.
"Perfect timing." Alex said when Henry told him that he was in the bar they used to patronise.
He ordered a drink when he got to the bar and narrated his ordeal to Henry.
"So in summary, what you mean is that you have suddenly had a fiancee within a week?" He chuckled.
"Are you trying to mock me or what? I came to you to rant my problem to you, but all you could do was mock me instead of advising or pacifying me."Alex retorted.
"What piece of advice do you think I have for you that you haven't heard or that I've told you before?"
"I seriously can't withstand seeing that devil or waking up beside her every day." Alex replied.
"Then send her out of your house. I don't even know why this is an issue for you."
"But I would be going against my parents if I did."
"The ball is in your court then. I've said this countless times, and I'll still continue doing so. You seem to think foolishly doing what your parents tell you to do at your age means you are being responsible, but, bro, it isn't. You are an adult, for crying out loud. That's all I have to say about this. Welcome to the circle, once again."
"Which circle?" Alex furrowed his eyebrows at him.
"To the fiancee's circle, of course." He laughed and placed his hands on Alex's shoulder, but he shoved it, which made him laugh hysterically.
With his unending jokes as Alex continuously complained, he was able to forget his worries as they both laughed it off, but he still didn't have the nerve to send Isabella out of his house or go against his parents.
The persistent ringing of Alex's phone echoed through his throbbing head, piercing the fragile veil of his sleep.Groaning, he fumbled in the dim morning light, his hand searching the cluttered drawer for the phone. The remnants of the hangover from the wild night he had spent with Henry the previous night clung to him like a shadow."It is the weekend, for God's sake! Why can't I have a peaceful morning and night? Can't a guy catch a break on the weekend?" He bemoaned as he stretched his hands to pick up his phone from the drawer beside the bed, while he was still half-awake.His irritation for Isabella from the previous night heightened as he noticed the constrained space on the once-empty drawer as her array of deodorants and cosmetics had encroached upon his territory. He couldn't reconcile himself with the idea of being tethered to her as he cast a disdainful glance at her belongings.A small sense of relief washed over him as he realised she was not beside him. Her absence spare
Isabella was speechless as she saw him leave the house.Although she liked him and wanted him to be hers, the little raging display in her front would have propelled her to pack her things from his house, but she couldn't afford to because of the main reason she agreed to the arranged union. She only hoped she could endure and keep up with her pretence till she achieved her aim.If not for the fact that Alex's employee had been hyped and had looked forward to the mini-party organised to celebrate the agency's latest contract, he wouldn't have attended because he knew the media would be after him due to the video Isabella had posted. He attended the event with his identity concealed. His baseball cap, worn low over his brow, veiled his identity, and the dark aviator sunglasses completed the disguise, with their lenses mirrored and impenetrable. He was a ghost at his own party—the event he poured his heart and soul into to celebrate his success and win.He enjoyed every moment of the e
Alex decided to comply with his father's request by attending the gala."Darling, it seems I'm having difficulty zipping up this dress," Isabella said, approaching him in the living room as they were dressing for the event.Alex wondered if she intentionally did it or not—whether she wanted to seduce him—as she turned her back to him.Indeed, her figure was a beautiful sight, as his gaze trailed over the exposed melanie skin of her back.Temptation threatened to overcome him, urging him to grab her from behind, but he shook off the thought after a nervous gulp.He zipped the dress as she had requested and left the living room.If he had found her attractive, he might have opted for the chauffeur's service, both of them sitting in the back seat, flirting. He resisted the temptation and took the driver's seat instead to distract himself from the temptation. He struggled to control his thoughts, attempting to avoid fantasies of intimate encounters with her, but his sexual arousal seemed
"Won't you ask for the amount I'm willing to pay you for tonight?" Alex smirked immediately after he closed the door behind her."Uhm...I...""Just name your price. I'm willing to pay you anything you desire." He moved close to her, pining her to the wall, as he could hear her pacing breath. As he got closer, he showered her with kisses.Starting from her nape, he skillfully worked his way up to her lips and simultaneously used his hand to caress and circle her backside, but she did not enjoy the moment but rather felt uncomfortable and uneasy. Her discomfort grew with each passing moment as she felt objectified and invaded by his touch. She flinched involuntarily.Seeing his persistence in not giving her a chance to catch her breath, she mustered the courage to push him back gently but firmly, to let him know that she didn't want him to proceed any further, even if it meant cutting the deal off with him.She shifted uncomfortably away from him as her gaze flitted the room as if she
"Are you joking?" Alex was dumbfounded. On the verge of crying, Emily replied, "I am not." Taken aback by her confession, he questioned her in disbelief. "You have never been close to a man before?""Yes, I haven't." Still in disbelief, he quickly went to flip on the light. "Then why did you decide to have sex this night...with a stranger, for that matter?" He stood in front of the bed, hands on his waist, while she, feeling awkward and embarrassed, immediately used the duvet to cover her unclad body. She was disappointed in herself for acting in a way that turned him off, realising that her means of earning cash for the tuition fee might no longer be effective. In his pants, Alex sat on the bed, anticipating hearing her reasons, because he was surprised that a lady of her age could still be a virgin. He had heard of it countless times, but he had never believed it and still believed that all she was acting out was a fac
Alex ignored Isabella as he walked into the house. He hoped that she would not initiate a conversation with him, because doing so could trigger the pent-up anger towards her."Alex, I'm sorry. I know I acted irrationally. But I promise you that it won't happen again." As Alex glanced at himself in the mirror, meticulously straightening his dress, she said as she sat on the bed.Alex was surprised to hear her apologies because she was known to be an egoistic type. He faced her in confusion and asked, "I think I've asked you before; why are you so keen on this marriage despite how I've been pushing you away?""It's because of my love for you, Alex. I've always loved you before. Right from when we were kids.""Love?" He chuckled in belief. "So what you mean is that the love you have for me is the only thing stopping you from leaving this so-called marriage?""Yes, darling..." She sensually rose from the bed and approached him with a seductive demeanour."I've tried to make the feelings
Alex immediately drove to the bar, but he did not conceal his identity unlike his previous visit. He was so interested in her game that no one could convince him to stop unless he got satisfied. As he parked the car in front of the bar, he quickly searched 'how to make a lady fall in love' on his phone and scrolled through many of the articles online."Be charming. Treat her like a queen." He muttered the line as he stumbled upon it. The line captivated his interest, compelling him to follow it.To win her heart, he decided to shed his cold demeanour towards women whenever he was with her.As he entered the bar, he saw Emily attending to a customer at the bar stand and walked directly to it with a grin plastered on his face. He sat on one of the bar seats."What would you like to have, sir?" Emily asked. She remained focused on a customer, to the extent that she did not glance in his direction."Maybe your attention...if that's available." He chuckled. His plan was to make her fall i
"Isabella, please don't do this to me." Alex kept on sobbing as he drove Isabella's lifeless body to the hospital. He knew that he was in trouble if something bad happened to her and regretted his reaction to their argument.Apart from his aversion to the sight of blood, he was also a hot-tempered person, always avoiding altercations, which is why he was a man of few words. He prayed silently at the hospital's reception, pacing around as Isabella was being treated in a ward there."Doctor, please, what's happening?" He rushed to the doctor immediately upon his appearance in the reception. ""Be rest assured, Mr. Alex. She is going to be fine." The doctor replied."But what happened to her?" He asked.Alex lied that she slipped in the bathroom and fell, but the doctor seemed not to believe him as he shot him a quizzical face."Yes, you can, but do not disturb her because we gave her a drug to make her sleep." The doctor replied after Alex had asked him if he could visit her in the war
Weeks had flown by, each day adding another vibrant brushstroke to the masterpiece of Alex and Emily's relationship. The storm that had once threatened to tear them apart seemed like a distant memory now, their bond stronger than ever. Their love had blossomed into something even more beautiful: an engagement. He had popped the question in a cosy little restaurant, the kind of place where fairy lights twinkled like stars and the aroma of exquisite dishes filled the air.***Flashback***"Em..." His voice cut through the comfortable silence, with a hint of nervousness in his tone. She looked up from her plate, a forkful of pasta halfway to her mouth. "Hmm?" she mumbled, her eyebrows raised in curiosity. He took a deep breath, his fingers fidgeting with the edge of the tablecloth. "So, there's actually a main reason I set up this date. I mean, besides just hanging out and enjoying this sick view of the city lights."Her interest was instantly piqued. She set down her utensils with a so
Alex froze just a few a few steps away from Emily's hospital room. He had just returned from home with the doctor-prescribed meal and some clothes, but what he overheard stopped him cold."Those few days... I've never been so terrified in my entire life." Emily's voice trembled from behind the door.He knew she would probably never open up to him about the horrors she had endured in captivity, no matter how much he begged her to share. Torn between respecting her privacy and his desperate need to understand what she had been through, he hesitated, deciding to listen."They starved me," she continued, her voice barely above a whisper. "Even though I was in agony, even knowing my condition, they only allowed me one meal a day. Like an idiot, I asked who was behind all this torture. They said it was Isabella's order." She let out a bitter laugh that barely masked her anguish. "Asking that question... God, they made me regret it."Her voice dropped to a whisper. "But the worst part, th
Alex pushed open the door to Emily's hospital room, his heart sinking as he saw her still form on the bed. The steady beep of the heart monitor was the only sound breaking the silence. For a moment, he just stood there, frozen, as the weight of everything crashed down on him.He approached slowly, his eyes fixed on her pale face, willing her to open her eyes. She looked so fragile, surrounded by tubes and wires. He sank into the chair beside her bed, taking her hand gently in his. It felt so small and fragile. A lump formed in his throat as he struggled to find words."Hey, Em," he whispered, his voice cracking. He took her hand gently, his thumb tracing circles on her skin. "I'm back. I... I need you to wake up, okay? Please."He then squeezed her hand, searching for any sign of response. Nothing. His voice broke as he continued, tears welling up."I'm so sorry. God, I'm so sorry for everything. I know I've messed up big time. But I swear, if you just open your eyes, I'll make it r
Alex could not tell if the chaos in his life lately was karma for what he had done, especially to Emily and their child. He wished he could take the punishment instead of them. Seeing Emily suffer was unbearable.Even without knowing the full extent of her ordeal during the abduction, watching her struggle on the hospital bed for the past two days was gut-wrenching."Mr. Thornton..." The doctor began."She experienced severe cardiac arrhythmia due to the extreme stress of recent events. We have managed to stabilise her condition, but she remains unconscious. The trauma appears to have been overwhelming for her system. At this point, we are monitoring her closely and hoping she regains consciousness soon. Her recovery is largely dependent on her body's ability to heal itself now."The doctor's words hit Alex like a sucker punch, leaving him winded and hollow. His mind reeled, trying to process the gravity of Emily's condition."God knows what happened to her in there." He muttered afte
Alex was relieved when the doctor smiled before he spoke. The doctor then told him that the operation was successful."Thank you so much, doctor." He thanked the doctor, beaming with a smile."When can we visit her in a room?" he asked, his voice tight with worry."We will be moving her to the post-op floor in about 20 minutes. However, I'm afraid you won't be able to until tomorrow morning, Mr. Thornton," the doctor replied.Alex's face fell, his shoulders slumping. "Seriously? Why can't I see her tonight? Is it because of the visiting hours?" He pressed, frustration creeping into his tone because visiting hours were not meant to be a restraint for a person like him. "Or is something still wrong that you are not telling me?" He added."No, Mr. Thornton, it is not because of the visiting hours." The doctor smiled."It's just for precautions to avoid some implications because she would be examined closely in the room throughout today. But rest assured, they are both fine." He added,
"Could she...could she..." Alex shook his head, not bringing himself to believe the thought that had overwhelmed his mind upon hearing the doctor's utterance. "Mr. Thornton, it would be better if we discussed it in my office." The doctor added. That confirmed his worst suspicions, and he felt his world crash down, believing Emily had died because of him—or so he thought."What do you mean by that?" Henry interrupted, while Alex stood in shock, convinced of the worst."I'm his best friend and confidant," Henry continued. "There is no need for him to follow you to your office to hear the news. I will be there too. Please tell us right now."The doctor glanced at Alex, as if seeking permission to break the news. Alex nodded sluggishly, convinced he already knew what the news was about. The doctor began, "Whatever she witnessed caused her severe shock, resulting in a panic attack and loss of consciousness. Given what she endured while being held captive, including physical and emotiona
Alex's heart raced as he clung to Emily's hand, his voice breaking with desperation. "Em...please stay with me. Don't die on me, please. Wake up; I'm now here." His words echoed down the hospital's hallway, his tears falling on her lifeless body as three nurses wheeled the stretcher rapidly towards the emergency ward, their faces masked with determination. As the stretcher approached the heavy doors of the emergency room, he tried to follow, his grip tightening on her hand and his heart pounding in his chest. But a nurse, her eyes kind but firm, gently blocked his path."Please, Mr. Thornton..." she said softly, placing a comforting hand on his arm. "You can't enter inside with us. Stay here while we attend to her in the ward," she said, her tone firm but understanding."What do you mean?" He scrunched his face in annoyance."Look, that may be your protocol, but I'm going inside there. Nothing can stop me from that." He added sternly. The nurse sighed, her expression serious. "Mr.
Upon arriving at the location, Alex was disappointed to find that the police officers had not arrived."I don't see the point of these useless officers," he muttered under his breath as he got out of the car.Henry called for him to return to the car, but he ignored him and walked determinedly towards the house at the address the private investigator had given him."Mr. Thornton," a voice from behind made him halt his track as he turned to see who it belonged to. It was the private investigator."What do you think you are doing? Where are the police officers? What's taking them so long?" He inquisitively asked Alex."Those useless officers are not here, which is why I have to go in myself." His face was creased. Henry had moved to stand behind them."Do you know what you are saying? You don't know what is in there, and you still want to go in regardless.""I don't care what awaits me in there or who the hell is there... All I know is that I'm going in." Alex insisted. "What is happ
As promised, Henry returned to the city the next morning and headed straight to Alex's mansion.Alex could not believe his eyes when he saw Henry at his doorstep. In fact, it was Henry's arrival that woke him from his slumber, the remnants of last night's drinking still weighing him down.He chuckled in disbelief and threw his arm around Henry's shoulder, pulling him into a brotherly hug."Thanks, man. I really appreciate this. Thanks for always being there for me," he said, his breath reeking of alcohol as he patted Henry's back. "Man, you drank a lot last night," Henry chuckled as they disentangled from the hug.Alex's eyes, which had been bright upon seeing Henry, suddenly transformed into gloom. "You can't blame me, man. I just didn't know what to do.""It's okay. It will be fine." Henry assured him as they walked inside.Once inside and seated, Alex explained to Henry how his conversation with the investigator had gone."I'm very sure we are going to save her. I trust the invest
