Jefferson drove to the Adam’s mansion with a gloomy look on his face. He couldn’t stop thinking about his company and the possibility of bankruptcy. As he walked into the Adam mansion, everyone was already gathered in the sitting room. He scanned the looks on their faces and realized that no one was happy. Angela’s grandmother, Mrs Adam, who usually welcomed him with a smile on her face didn’t utter a word to him as he sat on one of the sofas.“Is everything ok?” He asked. “Nothing is ok.” Mrs Adam said almost immediately. “Our company is at the verge of bankruptcy. The Adam’s company is all we have to sustain this family and we cannot afford to lose it. We need your help to revive the company.” Jefferson swallowed. He didn’t know how he could tell them about his own company that was also on the verge of bankruptcy. “Why aren’t you saying anything?” Mrs Adam said when Jefferson didn’t say anything for minutes. “You promised to handle these things when you asked to marry Angela.
Charles received a call from an unknown number few minutes after he woke up. “Hello, who am I speaking with?” He asked, yawning and stretching on his bed. “Good morning, Mr. Charles. I apologize for waking you up so early. My name is Kevin, the CEO of Dreamstone Enterprise. I have an offer to make to you and I think you’ll be interested.” Charles cleared his throat. “Go on. I’m listening.” “I heard about your latest success at the auction yesterday and the rapid growth of your hotel’s shares. I have been searching for a high value company to partner with and you’re the best fit for me. If you accept the partnership, you’ll receive 200 million dollars for working with us. What do you think?” “This is a very nice offer. Not only will it boost my hotel to the highest spot in the city, I will also get 200 million dollars.” Charles thought as he considered Mr Kevin’s offer.“Your offer is quite generous and I agree that it will beneficial to both our enterprises. I’ll like to know mor
"What rubbish!" Angela yelled, wiping the dust on her skirt. The guards dumped them in the parking lot and warned them to never return. "How can they treat us like this? This is the worst company in the city?" Jefferson leaned against the wall, his mind heavy with disappointment and sadness. He couldn't believe that his back up plan had failed him. Dreamstone's CEO rejected him like a refuse dump on the street. "Are you going to say anything?" Angela queried, her face contorted with disgust. She was angry and at the same time ashamed. "You claimed to be good friends with the CEO, why did they kick us out? Did you lie?" "I did not lie!" Jefferson bit back. "Obviously, someone already got the contract and I'm sure the secretary didn't pass the message well to him. I will call my father and have this sorted out." Angela laughed bitterly. "Your father? The same man who couldn't come to our rescue when that secretary was embarrassing us?" "I'm sure that—""You're not sure of anything!"
Charles was surprised to receive the call from Jefferson. He didn’t think Jefferson would ever call him talk more of asking to discuss business with him. “What kind of business issue do you want to talk about?” He asked. “It’s about my company. I know you’re skeptical to see but I wouldn’t call if I wasn’t desperate.” “Ok. I’ll text you my home address shortly.” “Thank you.” About an hour later, Jefferson arrived at Charles mansion. When Charles had texted him the address, he didn’t believe that he was living in Diamond Home Estate. But when he arrived and Charles welcomed him, he realized that Charles was bigger than he imagined. In fact, he believed that he was only faking his poverty back then because nobody could become rich overnight. “So, what do you want to discuss with me?” Charles asked, handing him a glass of wine. “To begin with, I’m very sorry for what happened with Angela. I shouldn’t have embarrassed you back in the hotel or abused you in front of her family. I’m
“Wake him up!” Charles vaguely heard someone say but he couldn’t see anything. He was blindfolded and tied to a chair. Suddenly, the blindfold was removed and he found himself in an old, dirty room. The windows were broken, cobwebs clustered around the walls and it stank of urine. From his observation, it seemed that the thugs had taken him to an abandoned house. He glanced around the room slowly, his eyes slightly blinded by the rays of sun beaming into the room. There were about six of the thugs present and they were all glaring at him. Whoever sent them must have paid them a lot of money, he thought. “Mr. Charles, the newest millionaire in town.” The leader drawled, leaning closer to him. “Are you surprised you’re here? Are you shocked that all your money could not protect you?” He teased and the rest laughed. Charles tried to talk but his mouth was stuffed with clothes. He made a gagging sound and tried to break free but couldn’t. “That’s not going to help you.” The leader sa
“Tell me now! What did I do to you? Why did you try to kill me?” Charles grit his teeth, tightening his grip around Mark’s neck. “Mark, what did you do?” Angela was trembling as she asked. “What have you done? Are you trying to ruin all our lives?” “Yes, I tried to kill him!” Mark barked, choking. “I tried to kill him because he’s a pain in our ass. I needed to get rid of him because he spoils all our plans. He destroyed everything we planned and I had to take action. No one was willing to do it so I took it upon myself.” The words were like a bee sting to Charles. He shut his eyes, trying hard not to lose control. After some seconds, he released Mark and pushed him away. “I’ve got your confession on tape.” He said, raising his phone in the air. “The thugs you sent had no personal information about you but I had to make sure to get evidence. Now, I’m going to take it to the police and you’ll spend half your life in jail for attempted murder.” Angela fell to her knees before Charl
Immediately after Charles left the Adam's mansion, the atmosphere within the sitting room turned cold. Mrs. Adam's patience had worn thin, and she lashed out at her son, Mark, her voice trembling with anger and disappointment."How could you wager our company for that hackathon? Do you understand the gravity of what you’ve done?!" Her words were sharp and filled with frustration. She had always been a strong believer in preserving the family business at any cost.Mark, struggling to maintain his composure, tried to explain the predicament he found himself in. "Mom, you don't understand. Charles has evidence against me. If I didn't accept the challenge, I would have ended up in jail. It's not like I wanted this."Angela, Mark's younger sister, chimed in, her voice filled with disdain for her brother's actions. "You are unbelievably foolish and reckless, Mark. Sending those thugs after Charles was a terrible idea. You're very unlucky he got away, but if you don't do everything in your p
ONE WEEK LATERThe grand hall of the Golden State Hotel was packed with influential businessmen from the city who were all there to watch the hackathon. Charles had invited them all to witness the contest between him and Mark. He wanted this event to be a public spectacle, a stage which the humiliation of the Adam family would be on full display once he emerged victorious.Of course, many businessmen accepted the invitation. After all, it was Charles that invited them, one of the most influential man in the city. Many of them really wanted to witness his abilities physically like they read in several articles. The buzz of anticipation filled the air as the guests chatted amongst themselves. Some couldn't help but gossip about the audacity of the Adam family to challenge Charles, a popular figure in the business world. To them, the Adam’s family were only trying to humiliate themselves. "I can't believe the nerve of the Adams," one man commented, shaking his head in disbelief. "To th
