Chapter 5 - Failed?

The next day.

"How do you know my phone number? Who gave it to you?" Sarah protested.

Sarah and Steve were in a lonely, mossy little alley.

"Anyway, why did you ask me to meet you in this disgusting place? Do you want to hurt me?! I offered you money yesterday!"

"I don't want that." Steve's voice was cold and serious.

"So?" Sarah looked at him suspiciously.

"I want to ask you to work together."

"You can't be crazy! Can you afford to pay me?!"

"Keep your voice down. Do you want someone to catch us and then spread a hoax?" Steve warned while observing the surroundings warily. He had deliberately chosen that place to protect Sarah.

"I don't have time to deal with you." Sarah's voice softened, though it remained firm. "Tell me quickly what you want from me?" she demanded.

"I want you to marry me."

PLAK!

"Ouch!" Steve rubbed his sore cheek. "Why did you slap me?" He gave Sarah an exasperated look.

"Are you out of your mind?! There's no way I'm marrying you because I already have a fiancé! Is it because I've invited you to stay in my apartment that you can be so insolent to me?!" Sarah's face turned red with anger.

"I'm not done yet-"

"If I'd known you invited me here just to talk nonsense, I wouldn't have come! You piece of trash!" Sarah spat at Steve's feet, then hurried to leave, but he grabbed her arm.

"Wait a minute! I'm not done talking yet! If you'll marry me, then I'll pay for all of your mother's treatments until she's cured!"

Sarah's steps stopped, and her body stiffened.

Steve smiled triumphantly. He knew this was the most effective way for Sarah to grant his request.

Sarah spun around, then kicked Steve's cock.

"ARGH!" Steve groaned in pain.

"You can't bring my mom into this, damn it, it's not funny!" Sarah hit Steve over the head with her bag, then left.

"I love you, Sarah!" Steve shouted desperately, making Sarah's steps again stop. "Please marry me! I'll do anything you want! I can clean the house, cook, do the laundry, be your personal assistant, or whatever. I'm even willing to hide our marital status, or you do not think of me as your husband in public." She pleaded with a look of frustration.

If he lost Sarah, he would lose any hope of revenge. He was not willing to lose the hundreds of millions of dollars on offer just like that.

"Do you want me to kill you, huh?! Stop talking nonsense!" Sarah glared at him, but she couldn't hide her flushed face.

Steve approached her while hobbling, then fell at her feet. "Please ...."

Sarah stepped back, a little surprised by Steve's behaviour. "I'm not a cheap woman who can be proposed to by begging."

"Then, what should I do?"

Sarah thought for a moment, then smiled wryly. "I want a dowry of a mansion, a sports car, a lavish wedding and $100,000,000 in savings. If you can afford it, I will marry you." Sarah said haughtily. She knew Steve was just a lowly waiter working in a simple restaurant. Of course, she knew because she had investigated his origins at the time of the accident.

'That's the end of my story. Steve cursed his bad luck.

"I can do that if you accept my proposal first."

"Tsk! I'm not a foolish woman who would fall for a poor man like you! I know you're just a lowly servant!"

Steve was disappointed to hear that. "You're just like my ex. Are all artists fond of putting others down? Am I not worthy of respect and love for being poor?" He vented the disappointment that he had been keeping to himself. The girl's words deeply offended his feelings that had just been hurt by Emmy's betrayal.

Sarah paused, realizing her words were too harsh. However, she was too proud to apologize.

"Never mind. I don't have any more time. If you can't fulfil my request, I can't marry you. Look for another woman."

Sarah left Steve just like that. Immediately, regret filled her heart. Even though she only knew him, she was sure he was a good man. He never blackmailed her or threatened to ruin her reputation for money.

He had filled the void in her heart, even if only for a moment.

Steve drank a can of beer while cursing his earlier behaviour. "Damn it! Why did I beg her like a beggar? Where's your pride, Steve?!"

He was babbling incoherently. Due to his obsession with revenge, he forgot his life principle of never lowering himself to others.

After all, who wouldn't be tempted if promised 10 million dollars? Especially when the only condition is to marry an actress?

Still, it's hard for a poor, ugly man like Steve.

"Do I just be honest with Sarah about the system's mission, and then we split the money?" Steve shook his head quickly. "No! She's not a stupid woman. There's no way she'd just trust me."

Steve snorted softly as he took a sip of his beer.

"I'd better forget about the revenge mission and the money. I need to focus on the realities of life. After all, I can't complete that mission."

The morning was flat. Due to stress, Steve stayed up late.

He took a quick shower and went to a small restaurant on the edge of town.

"Where have you been, Steve? Why did you disappear without news and leave a pile of dishes in the kitchen?" Jonas, a man with a shaved head and fat build, scolded him. He was the head employee.

"I'm sorry, Boss. I had an accident yesterday and was paralyzed, so I can't move."

"Nonsense! Do you think you can lie to me?! Now you're fired!"

Steve was shocked. "But I didn't lie, Boss! I really had an accident and was paralyzed! Please don't fire me!" He panicked.

"No paralyzed person recovers in just a few days! Hurry up and leave! I don't want to see you again!"

"But-"

"Or should I call the police to evict you?!"

Steve clenched his fists tightly, wanting to punch Jonas' greedy face. However, he had no other choice but to leave.

He walked languidly down the sidewalk, thinking about his future. Especially since he had to pay the rent soon.

"Because of Emmy, my life is ruined."

He didn't know whether to be grateful or complain when he recovered from paralysis. Because of his recovery, he lost everything. Sarah and her job.

"I was really miserable— Tsk!"

Steve was surprised when a car drove by and splashed a puddle onto his shirt.

"Asshole!" He walked up to the luxury car and banged on the window. "Don't you have eyes, huh?! If you can't drive, you should take the train!"

Steve was surprised to find Jacob and Emmy in the car.

"I'm sorry. I just bought this new car for my future wife but made a mistake. I'll compensate you." Jacob pulled a few dollars from his wallet and tossed it to Steve. "Is that enough?" He smiled dismissively.

"You!" Steve's body shook violently with rage. He instantly remembered how he had snatched Emmy away from her.

"Stop it, honey. Don't waste time with Steve. Don't we have a wedding dress fitting? Mary is waiting for us." Emmy hugged Jacob's arm, deliberately showing off her affection.

The wound Emmy had just inflicted on Steve's heart reopened. It was as if she was squeezing lemon onto his heart wound.

"You're right, sweetheart. I shouldn't waste my time with your useless ex-boyfriend." Jacob drove the car back, making the water wash over Steve again.

He wasn't annoyed at their lovemaking but was upset that he couldn't get revenge on those two jerks.

For him, revenge on the rich required a lot of capital.

"I have to get Sarah to marry me. No matter what!"
