The cave was silent, the kind of silence that pressed against the ears and made every breath feel louder than it should.

Vardy stood at the entrance, his staff glowing faintly.

The artifact pulsed in his hand, the whispers louder now.

“This is it,” Selene said from behind him, her voice low.“Your first Trial Quest. It’s not going to be easy.”

Vardy glanced over his shoulder at her, his expression grim. “They never are.”

Ferah stepped up beside him, her sword resting on her shoulder. “You sure about this? You don’t even know what’s waiting for you in there.”

“I don’t have a choice,” Vardy said, his tone firm. He turned back to the cave, his grip tightening on his staff. “If I don’t do this, I won’t survive what’s coming.”

“Then we’ll wait out here,” Tracy said, leaning against the cave wall. “Just don’t take too long.”

“Be careful,” Luthor added. “These Trials aren’t just tests. They’re meant to break you.”

Vardy didn’t respond.

The air grew colder as Vardy went deeper into the cave.

The tunnel opened into a vast chamber, the ceiling above him disappearing.

At the center of the room, Vardy saw a stone.

“Welcome, Challenger,” a deep voice echoed through the chamber.

Vardy froze, his eyes scanning the room. “Who’s there?”

“Your guide,” the voice replied. “And your judge. You seek power, but power is not given freely. It must be earned.”

The runes on the pedestal began brighter, and the ground began to tremble.

A circle of light appeared around him, trapping him in place.

“Your Trial begins now,” the voice said.

---

Back at the cave entrance, Ferah paced impatiently, her sword tapping against her leg.

“He’s been in there too long,” she muttered.

“It hasn’t been that long,” Tracy said.

Selene leaned against the cave wall, her arms crossed. “These things take time. He’ll either come out stronger, or he won’t come out at all.”

“That’s comforting,” Luthor said sarcastically, earning a sharp look from Ferah.

“Relax,” Selene said, her smirk faint. “Vardy’s stubborn. If anyone can survive this, it’s him.”

---

Inside the chamber, the circle of light around him expanded, and a figure came out from the shadows.

A figure, that was looking like a human appeared.

“Face your fear,” the voice said.

The creature lunged at Vardy, its movements fast.

Vardy raised his staff, the artifact’s energy surging around him as he blocked the attack. The force of the impact sent him stumbling back, but he held his ground.

The creature circled him, its smile widening. “You’re weak,” it hissed. “You don’t deserve power.”

Vardy ignored the taunt, focusing on the artifact’s energy. He sent a blast of dark magic toward the creature, but it dodged.

It laughed at Vardy, as it echoed.

“You’ll never be enough,” it said, its voice dripping.

“Shut up,” Vardy muttered, his grip tightening on his staff.

The whispers in his mind grew louder, drowning out the creature’s voice.

Vardy took a deep breath, centering himself.

He raised his staff, summoning another wave of magic.

This time, the blast struck, hitting the creature in the chest.

It let out a shout of pain.

But it wasn’t finished. The creature surged forward, its claws slashing at Vardy. He blocked the attack with his staff as he staggered backward.

“You think this is enough?” the creature snarled. “You’re nothing without that artifact.”

Vardy gritted his teeth, his mind racing. The creature was fast, too fast for him to rely on.

He needed to outthink it, to use his newfound powers creatively.

The whispers in his mind shifted, their tone changing. They offered guidance, a strategy.

Vardy smiled faintly. “Let’s see how you handle this.”

He raised his staff, the artifact’s energy flaring brighter than ever.

The ground beneath the creature’s feet began to crack, dark powers began to emit.

The creature struggled.

“No!” it screeched, shaking violently.

Vardy stepped forward, his staff glowing with a dark, steady light. “You’re wrong,” he said, his voice calm. “I’m more than this artifact. I’m more than you.”

Vardy unleashed a blast of magic that shattered the creature into wisps of smoke.

The chamber fell silent, the oppressive weight lifting.

“Congratulations, Challenger,” the voice said, its tone warmer now. “You have faced your fear and overcome it. Your reward awaits.”

The pedestal at the center of the room began to glow.

Vardy approached it, his heart pounding.

From the pedestal, a spectral form began to take shape. It was a wolf, its body shimmering and glowing at the same time.

“Your ally,” the voice said. “A reflection of your strength.”

The wolf stepped forward.

It stopped in front of Vardy, lowering its head slightly as if acknowledging him.

Vardy reached out, his hand hovering above the wolf’s head. He hesitated for a moment before touching it.

The wolf let out a low, rumbling growl, a sound of approval.

---

At the cave entrance, the group grew tensed.

The ground trembled faintly, and a faint glow appeared at the mouth of the cave.

“He’s coming,” Selene said, her tone calm but expectant.

Ferah stepped forward, her grip on her sword tightening. “Let’s hope he’s still in one piece.”

A moment later, Vardy emerged from the cave, his staff glowing faintly in his hand. Beside him, the spectral wolf padded silently.

Tracy’s eyes widened. “What... is that?”

“My ally,” Vardy said simply, his voice steady.

The wolf let out a soft growl, its glowing eyes scanning the group before settling on Ferah.

“Well, that’s new,” Ferah said, raising an eyebrow.

“What happened in there?” Luthor asked, his voice filled with awe.

Vardy glanced at him, a faint smile tugging at his lips. “I passed.”

Selene smirked, her arms crossed. “Looks like you’ve leveled up.”

Vardy didn’t respond. He looked down at the wolf beside him. The whispers in his mind were quieter now, their tone more subdued.

The stakes had risen, and the path ahead was darker than ever.

But, Vardy felt... ready.

The spectral wolf padded silently beside Vardy, surveying the environment.

The group moved through the shadowed alleys of Haven City.

“This thing’s giving me the creeps,” Luthor muttered, keeping a noticeable distance from the shimmering beast.

“It’s a wolf, not a ghost,” Ferah said, though she glanced at it warily. “Still, I don’t blame you. It feels... off.”

“It’s powerful,” Tracy said, her voice quiet but firm. “And we’re going to need that power.”

Vardy didn’t respond. His hand rested on the shaft of his staff, the whispers from the artifact subdued but ever-present.

The wolf moved in sync with him, like a silent shadow, its fur glinting faintly under the moonlight.

Selene, trailing behind the group, smirked faintly. “You know what this means, right?”

“What?” Vardy asked without looking back.

“More attention,” Selene said, her tone almost playful. “You’re already a thorn in Dean’s side. Now you’ve gone and added a glowing wolf to the mix. Subtlety clearly isn’t your strong suit.”

“I didn’t summon it for attention,” Vardy said, his voice sharp.

“Doesn’t matter why you did,” Selene replied, her smirk fading. “Word travels fast in Haven. People are going to notice. And they’re going to come for you.”

“Let them,” Vardy said, his tone cold.

---

In a smoky tavern on the edge of the slums, whispers of the Dud’s new companion spread like wildfire.

“Did you hear?” a man said, leaning across the table toward his companions. “The Dud’s got himself a new pet. A spectral wolf.”

“A wolf?” a woman replied, her brow furrowing. “What does that mean?”

“Means he’s stronger than we thought,” the man said, lowering his voice. “And if Dean doesn’t stop him soon, he’s going to lose everything.”

At a nearby table, a hooded figure listened silently, their drink untouched. They stood after a moment, slipping into the shadows as the tavern’s chatter continued.

---

The group stopped in a narrow alley, the distant hum of the city buzzing around them.

Vardy leaned against the wall, his breathing steady but heavy with thought.

“We can’t keep moving like this,” Ferah said, crossing her arms. “The more we stir up trouble, the more people are going to come after us.”

“We’re already targets,” Tracy said, her spear resting against her shoulder. “What’s the difference now?”

“The difference,” Selene interjected, stepping forward, “is that they’re not just scared of you anymore, Vardy. They’re scared of what you’re becoming.”

Vardy glanced at her, his expression unreadable. “Good. Let them be scared.”

Selene’s smirk returned. “Fear can be useful, sure. But it can also make people desperate. Dean’s men won’t just sit back and let you tear his empire apart. They’ll fight harder, dirtier. And they won’t come at you head-on. They’ll find other ways.”

“Let them try,” Vardy said, his grip on his staff tightening.

“You’re not invincible,” Selene said, her tone softening. “You might have this wolf, but you’re still human. And humans break.”

Vardy stared back at her, his expression unreadable, without uttering a word.

As he observed the crowd, he estimated that there were approximately two hundred 'normal' students bustling about, each with their own aspirations and dreams of becoming heroes. In contrast to the grandeur of other renowned hero schools, White Oak appeared modest in size.
