“What the hell was that?” Jake asked, his arms crossed and fury blazing in his eyes.

Anthony just shook his head and sighed.

“Jake, don’t say anything. Catherine apologized and said we are still together.” he said.

Jake’s eyes widened.

“Are you out of your mind, bro? Can’t you see it? She just said that to get money from you. I can’t believe you!” he walked out angrily.

Anthony just groaned and took a deep breath. Suddenly, someone caught his attention. He saw the guy wearing a black tuxedo he had also seen from the cafe yesterday.

“I am sorry, do I know you?” he asked the guy.

He must be on his 40’s already. The guy smiled at him and shrugged his shoulder.

“I am sorry. I didn’t mean to dwell with your own business, but I couldn’t help but stir up. We don’t know each other, but I remember you. You were the guy who was rejected by his girlfriend at the cafe yesterday, right?” he chuckled.

Anthony suddenly became shy.

“Y-Yes.” he said.

“I was right then.  Just a little advice, I think you need to hear from your friend, the guy a while ago.” he winked at him and left.

Anthony was stunned but ignored it. He went back to work and Jake kept on ignoring him. The day ended; he doesn’t have any money left because Catherine took it all. He decided to walk but he noticed a black car following him. He hurried up until he arrived at his place. He quickly looked by the window to check and saw the car parked in front.

“Who is inside? And is someone following me? Nah. It must be a mistake.” he shrugged his thought.

After preparing his dinner, he grabbed his phone to call his girlfriend.

“Hey, babe.” Catherine answered.

“Hey, were you busy? You never texted me.” he asked.

Catherine laughed from the other line.

“Did you forget? I am here at my grandma’s, babe. I think I would be home soon enough.” she said.

“Ohh, okay. Babe, about my proposal... now that we’re back together, is there a chance you would ac---- Uhm, babe. Can I call you later? Grandma needs me. Bye!” Catherine cuts him off and even ended the call.

He just slowly realizing what Jake told him about her. Anthony sat in silence, the phone still pressed to his ear long after the call had ended. Catherine's abruptness, her refusal to even let him finish a sentence, gnawed at his mind. He clenched his jaw and exhaled slowly, shaking his head to dismiss the nagging thoughts creeping in.

"Maybe Jake's just overreacting." he muttered to himself, trying to convince his heart of something his mind already doubted.

The evening dragged on, with Anthony unable to shake off the unease. He sat by the window, staring at the street below. The black car he had noticed earlier was gone, but something about it left him unsettled. Who would be following him, and why? His life was far from eventful—just a modest job, a complicated girlfriend, and little else.

As he debated whether to call Catherine again, his phone buzzed. It was a message from Jake.

Jake: "Dude, I’m sorry for being harsh earlier, but you need to open your eyes. I saw something today, and I need you to see it too. Meet me at the corner diner in 10 minutes."

Anthony sighed, his shoulders slumping. He wasn’t in the mood for another lecture, but Jake was his best friend. He grabbed his jacket and stepped into the chilly night air, walking to the diner a few blocks away.

The small diner was nearly empty, the faint aroma of coffee and fried food lingering in the air. Jake was seated at a booth near the window, his expression tense. He didn’t look up as Anthony approached.

“Jake, what’s this about?” Anthony asked as he slid into the seat across from him.

Jake didn’t answer right away. Instead, he pulled out his phone and placed it on the table, the screen glowing with a photo. Anthony hesitated before picking it up. His heart sank as he recognized Catherine—laughing, her arms around a man dressed in a sharp suit. The man had his hand resting possessively on her waist.

“What... what is this?” Anthony’s voice wavered.

Jake leaned forward, his voice low and filled with frustration. “That’s Catherine, isn’t it? I saw her earlier tonight. She wasn’t at her grandma’s, man. She was out with this guy, acting like they were a couple.”

Anthony’s hands trembled as he stared at the image. The cozy way Catherine leaned into the man, the carefree smile on her face—it wasn’t the look of someone reluctantly using another. It was the look of someone happy.

“This doesn’t mean anything.” Anthony said weakly, though even he didn’t believe it.

Jake groaned, running a hand through his hair. “Anthony, come on. I get it, okay? She’s pretty, she’s got charm, and she’s good at wrapping you around her finger. But she’s using you, man. She’s been lying to you this whole time.”

Anthony’s mind raced. Catherine’s sweet apologies, her pleas for money, the way she had so easily brushed off his proposal—they all replayed in his head with a painful clarity. He wanted to believe in her, but the evidence was staring him in the face.

“I... I need to talk to her.” Anthony muttered, rising from the booth.

Jake grabbed his arm. “Don’t do something stupid. If you confront her, she’ll just manipulate you again. You need to cut her off, Anthony. She doesn’t deserve you.”

Anthony pulled his arm free and stormed out of the diner. His breath came in ragged gasps as he walked aimlessly through the streets. He didn’t want to believe Jake, but deep down, he knew his friend was right. Still, he needed to see it for himself.

Half an hour later, Anthony found himself outside a fancy bar he had seen in the background of the photo. He hesitated, his heart pounding, before stepping inside. The dimly lit room was filled with chatter and the clinking of glasses.

And there she was.

Catherine was seated at a booth with the same man from the photo. She laughed, her hand brushing against his as she leaned in closer. Anthony froze, his chest tightening. He wanted to walk away, to leave and never look back, but his feet carried him closer.

“Catherine.” he said, his voice barely above a whisper.

“A-Anthony?!”
