Whimpers and soft cries woke him up.
He sat up slowly and looked at Cara who was crying in her sleep. Her body was smoky, and the space around her was hot, very hot. Alastair slowly approached her.Tears dropped from the sides of her face as she kept on dreaming. The space was becoming even hotter and he knew he needed to wake her up. But when he touched her hand, he suddenly gasped as he got sucked into her nightmare.Fire.A village was burning and the fire was spreading rapidly. People ran as best they could, mother's trying to keep their children safe. It was not dragon's flames, it was something else. The fire had a source and he needed to find Cara at that moment. Perhaps that was what she feared, the nightmare. Perhaps that was her village getting destroyed.A woman bumped into him as he staggered through the crowd. It was getting more difficult to navigate through as more people kept pouring out. Something had formed an invisible barrier around the entire village, preventing people from leaving.Alastair looked as the flames wrapped themselves around people and consumed them. It seemed very familiar. It began to remind him of that night, at Elderien's keep. He shook his head to clear his mind. He needed to leave the nightmare as soon as possible."Cara! Where are you?" He called out to her and barely dodged a building that fell. The screams of the people persisted but he kept on searching for her."Cara!"He called out again, but then he felt something. He stopped, turned around, and saw a little child kneeling. The child was on fire, like how Cara had looked when she used her powers back at Elle's place. He slowly began to approach with caution and when he was close enough, he slowly touched her shoulder."Cara?"He said, but the child suddenly looked at him and grabbed his hand. He groaned as his flesh began to sizzle, but she would not let go."Cara, I need you to wake up."He said, flesh burning and Cara looking emotionless. He then cried out as the burns began to spread up his arm."Cara! Wake up!"He yelled at her and suddenly, they were back in the forest, with Cara wide awake now and still holding his hand. His flesh was burnt and when Cara saw what she did, she immediately let go of his hand and ran out of the circle, crying as she did."Cara, wait! It's not safe for you out there."He called after her and followed. She dashed through the forest and her cries were the major thing leading him to her. On such an eerie and cold night, it was not safe for her to be wandering all by herself. He followed her through the entire length she'd run through until he found her standing on a cliff, looking down to the deep beyond."Cara, I need you to step away from that cliff. It is not safe. You might hurt yourself." He said to her and began to slowly approach, but she did not move."Maybe that is the best thing for everyone. Maybe I should just die. That way, I would not have to work about hurting anyone else in my life." She said and took a step further.Alastair tried to use his magic on her, but somehow, she was subconsciously blocking his powers. How was she doing that?"Cara...""I did it. I killed them all. Everyone in my village, my parents...I burned them all to ash. And then I did it again, at another village. Someone like me does not deserve to live. I do not belong here in this world. I need to die." She said and cried."You do not need to die, Cara. You are perfectly safe where you are and no one will hurt you, not even yourself. The mages in Elderien's keep will teach you how to control your powers. You will be perfectly fine.""What if I can't?""What if you can? Think of the good you will do for the people. The lives you will save. Think of the wars you will end. You are a special child, Cara. You must see yourself the way I see you. And besides, I will always be watching. I won't let anything go wrong. I promise."Alastair said to her and she turned around slowly. She nodded as she did, streams of tears still falling down her face. She seemed to believe him, and that was a good thing. But as she attempted to step off the cliff, it suddenly divulge beneath her as she screamed as she fell."No!"Alastair yelled. His magic was not fast enough to catch her. He rushed to the cliff and watched as her body hit the ground."N-no..." He stuttered, jumping down and guilding himself with his magic. As he began to walk towards her lifeless body, he suddenly became overwhelmed with emotions. He cried like he had lost a child of his own. He fell to his knees, holding his Face in hand. The sounds of owls hooting could be heard from a distance and the moonlight shone on them. However, at that very moment, something happened.A mildly strong wind began to blow as Cara's body turned into fiery Sparks. Alastair looked in shock as the Sparks began to twirl, following the motion of the wind. Then, then the wind became more violent and it seemed like it had become fiery. Alastair took a step back and watched what was happening. Then the fiery wind began to condense. It took another moment or so, but when the wind had stopped, Cara was standing there, perfectly healthy like nothing just happened to her, like she didn't just die. For the millionth time, Cara had managed to surprise him again, and he wondered if he even knew what he was dealing with exactly. The sun rose up in all its glory as Alastair and Cara descended down the hill that led to the Elderien's keep. Like she always maintained, she was silent throughout the rest of the walk. But that time, Alastair did not want to bring up the issue that she just returned from the dead. She had something powerful within her and perhaps not pushing her was the right thing to do at that moment. They continued to descend further and took the little path which cut through a little bush-path. As it was early in the morning, no one was seen along the way. The walk continued in silence until Cara suddenly decided to break the silence."I died, did I not?" She started, Alastair looking at her she spoke."When I fell from the cliff, I died, right?" She asked again."Yes. You did. You do not remember?" Alastair asked her. A fly suddenly buzzed across her face and she smacked it with her palm. The buzzing always irritated her and she found bees even worse."I remember falling. I remember feeling li
He looked down on them both and then crunched, his bones cracking as he did. He slowly took Alastair's face in his hand and looked at him."You have grown thinner over the years. Perhaps life hasn't treated you well?" The old man said and Cara watched as Alastair sobbed."Master...""You should not have come back here Alastair." The old man said and stood up, walking away from him."I know, master Orion. But I just need you to take her in. She is a mage and she needs your wisdom." Alastair said and Orion looked at Cara."You risked your life to bring her to me. Who is she? Your daughter?" Orion asked but Alastair did not reply. Then, he directed his gaze towards Cara."What is your name, child?""Cara." "And you are a mage?"" He says so." Cara said and looked at Alastair. "Hm." Orion added and walked away."Throw Alastair out of this city...""But master Orion, the judgement was passed!" Blaize objected. But Orion continued"...take the child to the Inyens. They will tell us what we
She could hear the cheers from the men inside the large hall and that made her sigh. Yet again, another cheer erupted and as the voices seemed to shake the foundations of the castle itself, Miranda shuddered. Why could they take so much joy and privilege in doing unnecessary Things? She knew she was not perfect, however, she understood the responsibility that came with being a royal. Most of the time, a royal would have to forfeit their happiness for the sake of the people. That was a fact that, sadly, her older brother did not understand."Argh!" She exclaimed as the maid pulled the ropes behind her dress tighter than she'd expected. For the sake of the ridiculous party, she was meant to wear the ridiculous dress as well. The maid, however, did not appear to read her mind. She just kept on with her business."Oh!"Another pull. However, at that time, the maid stopped and looked at her."Did I do something wrong, princess?" She asked politely. She was about Sixteen or seventeen
As usual and as expected, everyone's eyes fell on her. She took care and calculated steps as she walked into the Hall. The entire hall was silent for a moment as all got transfixed by her beauty. She could feel the eyes of some of the men undressing her already, some of the women looked at her with admiration but others, like her dear cousin Bianca, were probably killing her over and over in their heads. She did not care about that. Her eyes roamed the hall and she could see her older brother, Kevin who was standing with a woman and smiling at her. Then, she noticed a peering eye from the sides and turned to see her eldest brother Richmond, gazing at her with spite. He was the heir to the throne as tradition demanded for he was the oldest and he was male. But he felt strongly intimidated by her. Well, how could he not, when she managed to steal his party for herself? As it was customary, Miranda proceeded to pay her respects to her father who looked delighted to see her, but fr
"Hello Miranda" Alastair said as he walked closer, watching her as she tightened her grip on the sword. She had not expected to see him inside her room, but there they were. So when she unsheathed her sword and pointed it at him, he took a step back, receding from the anger that was written all over her face."Bastard!" She cursed at him."I know how you feel at this moment..." He hadn't finished the statement when she swung her sword in an attempt to wound him. He quickly jerked back, dodging the strike before it could do any damage. "Miranda, just listen to me!" He yelled but she did not stop. She came right at him again, distracting him with her sword before she kicked him in the stomach. He groaned but he did not hit her. He was not even fighting."Miranda..." Another charge escaped her lips and she pointed the sword at him, in an attempt to cut him down. He caught the sword and held on to it even as it made him bleed."Why are you not fighting? I want you to fight. Fight!" She
They carefully left the room, observing the passing maids go out of their way before they headed down the corridor. They were fast and cautious, but then, Miranda saw some guards coming."Hide!" She whispered and Alastair hid with Cara. Miranda pulled off her hood as the guards walked past her, paying their respects as they did. Then, she turned around to gesture to them to come outside but just before they did, Miranda felt another presence."Where are you going in a cloak?" Her brother, Richmond suddenly said to her. She turned around, looking him in the eye. He was angry. He always looked that way towards her."How is that any concern of yours? She asked him and he walked even closer, the smell of alcohol and women following him like a second companion."You are my sister. It is my duty to protect you." He said and she laughed."More like monitor me. You have never looked at me like your sister Richmond. You have always felt anger towards me whenever you look at me or am I lying?""
Alastair crunched and watched as the mages swum towards the ship, hands on the deck as he listened to the vibrations within the large vessel.None of them had infiltrated the ship yet, and that was a good thing. He could see the panic on the Captain's face and he could only wonder what was going on in the man's mind. But yet, he could not help but wonder how the mages found them so quickly. Was that Blaize's doing? It couldn't be. He had always cleaned his tracks after using magic and there was no way Blaize or any other mage could track him, atleast, not yet. Then those Mages were not from Blaize, they were under someone else's authority. One of the mages grabbed the ship and began to climb. Alastair sent a wave of energy to surround the ship, knocking the mage badk into the river with a cry. Others began to climb as well but the same wave was sent to clear them off. They fell into the river, screaming when the wave hit them. The wave was not kind, and Alastair did it that way fo
Alastair closed his eyes and opened his ears. He let them spread far and wide, sensing the ripples that pulled on the river, the tails of the fishes as they swam towards their foods, then to the river bank where the mages he had sent out of the river were gasping and regaining their strength. One of them suddenly carried a curious look, like he was hearing something, and then, the Mage looked at him and Alastair's eyes opened. He had been right. The mages were from the palace. He needed to warm Miranda but he was in no position to do so at that state. Invading someone's dream took a lot of energy if the mage had no natural affinity for Dreamscaping. He did not have that affinity, he did not have any natural affinity to be precise. He just learned every and any form of magic. The rest of the night proceeded that way but when morning came, they were already at Rheina's port. He'd dosed off for a moment and woke up when the captain yelled at his crew to "hurry the fuck up". Cara st
