To be more precise, David was aware that Jeff had been treating him leniently. He listened to the police officers whispering next to him as he stood to one side and watched his grandmother converse with the commanding officer.

They had been discussing Jeff.

David wiped his sweaty palms on his trousers, his nerves betraying him in tiny droplets of perspiration, a visible sign of his inner unease.
