4. Unorthodox

Slaying a quartet of goblins was the trial Finn needed to conquer to earn his adventurer's permit.

"Umm. Emma. Shouldn't I have been the one to kill the goblins?"

"Oh, Yelan didn't inform you about my methods." Emma cleaned her hands. "You know Gales hasn't been having the best coppers in recent years."

"Isn't Iron only two places above Copper?" Finn thought to himself, he dared not say it after seeing what she did to the goblins.

[Air construct: Chair] Emma gracefully seated herself upon a invisible chair, inducing a slight chuckle from Finn, who swiftly regained his composure.

"Killing four goblins. Kill one Gui. Kill two Jinxes. These are monsters a group of villagers with a pitchfork can kill. At copper-5 you'd take stronger quests than these, so why set the bar so low?" Emma folded her arms. "I understand the Ianbris guild needs more talent but even still... Well, whatever you thought we were doing today it would be better if you removed that from your mind."

"What do you mean?"

"Well. I'm going to be your mentor until you enter Granite. That way I can make sure you aren't a noob who thinks taking quests at Copper forever is okay." Emma stood up from her chair and stretched.

"Yelan never mentioned anything about a mentor." Finn backed up. "And why are you getting up as if you want to att-"

[Air magic: Furious slashes]

"Incoming attack sir, DOGDE!" Dusk shouted and Finn's body moved faster than his mind.

Although Finn managed to dodge the first attack Emma wasn't done with him, she charged him down while creating more constructs of wind.

"She's an air user, although she's charging you the last thing you want to do is run. They are deadlier at range." Dusk instructed Finn.

Amidst the maelstrom of actions, Finn was faced with a barrage of instructions, Emma's aggression and Dusk's words. Just as he began forming a decision, his focus shifted to the sun, and the sensation of sand bits pricking his back asserted itself.

"You can't tense up when an enemy approaches you, if this was a real battle you wouldn't be on the ground. You'd be under." Emma put out her hand and Finn grabbed it.

"How did you make that? The air blades. I could barely see them."

"Wait. How much of a noob are you to all this? You know all the elements and what magic is right?"

Finn shook his head.

"This is the problem I'm talking about." Emma sighed. "We'll figure this out tomorrow then. In order to give you the best explanation there's somewhere we'd have to go to."

Following the rigorous training, Finn went to his guild, what he needed right now was rest. He walked over to the Inn, surviving off Martha’s kitchen once more before he returned to his room, despite having some doubts about this straight-out-of-a-film world, he knew one thing for sure. He needed to get strong enough to survive. “Sir, you've leveled up one from your scuffle with Lady Kilforhlm, and you've acquired a skill point."

"Umm, how do I do this again? [Kaleidoscope]" The same blue panel popped up and although it wasn't the first time Finn still stepped back in fright.

"I can't use it for anything, till I reach level 10." Finn kept looking at his stats. "Oh most of them got higher, my health did too."

"Yep, that happens every time you level up. You'll stop leveling up when all your skills hit their limit. Keep in mind that it'll get harder and harder to level up so you need to take on more quests."

"There's still so much I don't know about this world, everything's so bizarre and different from how it is on Earth and I still haven't met anyone from the cave." Finn paced around his room, walking back and forth.

"Just calm down, the best thing we can do for ourselves is get stronger. We can start traveling across the globe once we have a way to defend ourselves." Dusk explained and it only made Finn pace even faster.

"I get you, Emma said we'd start tomorrow so it's hard for me to get any rest."

"Change of plans then." Finn looked back and Emma was floating outside his window.

"What a useful element." He thought. "Emma! What are you doing here? How do you know where I live?"

"Your freeloading off the guild and Martha doesn't necessarily give top-tier security. Plus, there's something I want to show you." Emma put her hand out.

"Umm..." Finn grabbed her hand and stood on the edge of the window

"Jump. My wind construct will catch you." Emma instructed but Finn hesitated, how the hell did he do this before?

"..." He wanted to jump, he forced himself to but he wouldn't move an inch until he heard Emma's voice.

"Don't be scared, don't hesitate either. Life comes at you fast. Be faster."

"Fear? Me?" Finn jumped off the window's edge and was caught in mid-air by what felt like a cold pillow.

"See you did it." Emma's face lit up with a smile.

"Yeah, so what now?" Finn said and the pillow-like air construct started floating higher into the air.

"I wanna show you something." Emma winked.
