6. Mana

Mana was within everything, whether it's within plants, animals, humans, or demi-humans. Each entity on the planet possesses mana, although in varying quantities. Despite everyone being born with mana, the ability to transform it into an elemental form isn't universal.

Elements vary from person to person but they usually revolve around the basic seven being Water, Air, Earth, Lightning, Fire, Yin and Yang. With Yin and Yang being raw applications of darkness and light.

The existence of mana was said to have dated back to the beginning of mankind and although no one knows when it was transformed into an element, ever since a few centuries ago. It's been as rampant as dogs.

"I know training in an open environment is always better but why exactly are we in the middle of the desert?" Finn asked Emma who kicked her feet up on an invisible table.

"This 'desert' wasn't like this a hundred years ago, it used to be a city called Thyme. Good city even better people."

"What happened to it?" Finn squinted his eyes as a dust cloud blew past.

"The demon king was born at this very spot, his mere creation alone turned the entire town to ash." Emma pointed at the sand. "It's also a hotspot for demons and monsters so it's good training."

"I'm sorry what?" Finn turned around.

"Mana is present in all things from plants to humans. However, we're the only ones capable of harnessing it... well naturally of course." Emma demonstrated by lifting sand. "Try manipulating the sand using only raw mana."

Finn concentrated but he could feel nothing, nothing she was saying made any sense in the first place. Mana this, mana that. Why was the power structure of another world harder than sixth-grade math. He sighed but continued concentrating.

"Try visualizing it, mana appears to most as a raging fire or a calming water. By picturing it, you can sense it and by sensing it you can manipulate it." Emma focused mana on her hand. "Send it to your arm or whatever part of your body before launching it away."

"A raging fire or calming water." Finn stood still for minutes before stretching his arm out, and within it what looked like a spiral of energy spawned.

"Now try pushing it outwards, visualize a firework flying into the sky and exploding."

Finn pointed his hand at the sand and released the blast of mana. "Wow!" Emma shouted as a large crater was created from the blast. "Most basic mana blasts don't have that much power." Emma stood up and did the same as Finn but a significantly smaller crater was created. "Maybe you truly were blessed by the gods."

"That's what I've been trying to tell you."

"Yeah yeah." Emma sat back down.

"But how do I use elements though? I can use a fire spell but that's about it. How do you create your constructs?"

"There are many forms of magic and even more sub-elements, twin attackers use 'forms' in battle. But I'll show you more on that later." Emma raised her hand and Finn was lifted into the air. "When your sync your basic mana control with an element it allows you to do this, of course, it's not as easy as it seems but it is more or less how I control the element freely without the use of a spell."

"So much information." Finn scratched his head after being let down by Emma. "[Kaleidoscope]"

"I haven't leveled up since then, what happened?"

"You haven't engaged in any sort of combat, you gain exp. by completing quests and fighting regardless of its outcome. Though you get more if you win." Dusk explained.

"I see. So the fastest way would be a spar between me and her?"

"Yes sir. Someone of her caliber would increase your level dramatically." Dusk answered. "And since she failed to explain forms, I'll do it during the spar."

"Okay." Finn took a deep breath in. "Master! Please spar me!"

"Do you honestly think anything you do will hurt me?" Emma flicked her fingers and a burst of wind blew Finn away.

Finn fell but didn't stay there for long. "To equip your weapons bring your hands out and visualize them, then say equip!" Dusk explained and Finn did just that [Equip] two blades formed in his hands and Emma looked at him closer as if finally accepting his request.

A gust of wind blew past him again but he didn't flinch, he charged his teacher with both blades in his hand but she dodged accordingly before pushing more air towards him. "I'll never be able to get close to her like this." Finn tried standing his ground but he couldn't hold on for long. "Twin attackers and classes that use weapons use forms for their attacks, forms can either carry an element or technique. Visualize your technique and your body will follow."

Finn rolled over to the side running diagonally across the sand, "How do I visualize something I haven't witnessed before." Finn tasted sand as he was pushed onto the ground by a blast of Emma's air.

"Trust yourself."

[Air magic: Collapsing wind] Finn was further pressed into the ground by a surge of wind sent by Emma, although he asked for a simple spar it seemed she was serious. Finn got up from his pseudo demise before rolling out of the way to avoid another blast of wind.

Though it was slow, he could sense it and not only could he sense it. He could also see and hear it, he dived out of the way and a blast of tempest surged by him. He could sense her attacks, he could dodge them. Finn gripped his daggers in his hands the best way he could, with his left hand in front of his right and both blades covering his face. A stance he had seen once on tv. "Visualize the form." He ran diagonally again, running being the only way to avoid the constant blasts of wind.

Emma watched as her student ran around like a rat scurrying away from a predator, she was the hunter in this scenario and she had the rat against a wall but something felt off. Finn racked his mind, there was nothing there. Dusk said to trust himself but that meant nothing. What did he mean by that? What was he trying to convey?

'Visualize your technique' the words of Dusk echoed in his ears and Finn made a beeline for Emma. Blasts of wind hitting him as he ran towards her but he didn't stop. "Trying to get closer?"

[Air magic: Tempest] "Dodge!" Dusk shouted but Finn didn't listen, he just ran toward her. He had no idea what was in his head but he trusted his guts. The wind blew against his skin, almost ripping it apart but he planted his feet to the earth and rushed through the attack. He was within meters of Emma and the only thing that played in his head was a zigzag line accompanied by a burst of lightning.

It made no sense but he didn't care, he primed the daggers and strengthened his muscles. He had no idea what the first form was supposed to be and he didn't care. "[Twin dagger form 1: Star Trail]" Finn glided through the earth at a ridiculous speed, his blades turning blue as he rushed towards her and his mind was almost not being able to register what was currently going on. The sound of thunder could be heard and in an instant, Finn was behind Emma with his dagger pointed at the back of her neck.

"Wow. Lightning magic. I'm impressed." Emma raised her hands in defeat and Finn fell on the ground panting like he ran for miles. "You finally figured it out?" Emma put her hand out and Finn grabbed it.

"Yeah, I'm the one that creates my form." Finn bent over still catching his breath. "Why didn't you just explain it like this?"

"It's much easier having you learn it instead." Emma laughed.

"Nice work Sir. You've gone eight levels up and now you have nine accumulated skill points."

"Finally."

"By the way." Emma chuckled. "Why star trail?"

"Shut up," Finn said embarrassed. "It just came to me."

"Sorry, I increased my magic pressure during the battle I received a message that messed with my thoughts a bit."

"What message?"

"There's a sentient demon at the catacombs of Alza."

"Don't tell me." Finn facepalmed.

"They need my assistance."

"Goddamnit!"
