8. First mission

Tick. Tick. Tick. Tick.

The same ticking noise repeated over and over again, creating the only sound that could be heard in the room. Wind blew the curtains unleashing a ray of sunlight onto the bed and his eyes.

"Emma!" Finn burst up from sleep, looking around for his teacher.

"Calm down," Dusk said. "She's safe, you passed out and Hex brought you to a hospital."

"Phew." He let out a sigh of relief. "The demons are really strong... you know I have no intention of fighting the demon king right? I'm not going to change my mind."

"I won't force you."

"Good." Finn tugged the bed sheets further toward his chest before going back to bed.

"But what exactly is your goal then sir?"

Finn paused upon hearing the question, his past life flashing through his mind in rapid images. His sadness, anger and pain. This was a second chance at life and he wasn't going to make the same mistakes again. "I'll become stronger."

"Stronger for what reason? As Madam Kilforhlm said, there are better-paying jobs than adventuring. Why not indulge in those if you have no interest in fighting the demon king?"

"I'll become strong enough to protect Emma." The scene of Emma being hurt by the demon replayed in his mind. "I'll get strong enough to protect everyone I care for, then I'll go to a farm somewhere. Start a family and live out the rest of my days in peace."

"Since your goal is to get stronger we better start now. You have reached level 17, You have accumulated 16 skill points. It would be wise to learn some skills to aid you in combat. Upgrading your weapons will also be wise." Dusk advised.

"I guess there's no harm in doing that." [Kaleidoscope]

"So what exactly should I be learning?" Finn said confused. "And what exactly are these skills in the first place? I'm guessing they aren't spells or forms.

"I guess I never explained." Dusk coughed. "There are two types of skills. Normal skills and Passive skills, normal skills are skills that are activated manually by you calling out their name Or thinking about them. Whilst Passive are always active, think of them as perks."

"I see. So how do learn them exactly?"

"Say learn and then the name of the technique, for now you can only learn recommended skills. Higher level skills will be available when you get past level 100."

"Sounds like a design flaw." [Learn Boost. Learn Double Power]

"Skills have been learned, there are no more recommended skills to learn. You can spend the remaining points on your daggers. That way you can strengthen them." Dusk stopped but continued when he guessed what Finn would have asked. "To upgrade your daggers. Say. Upgrade dagger and a separate screen will pop up."

"And that should be all, during your next near-death experience I'll be sure to remind you about the skills."

"That's not funny." Finn closed his eyes once more, Emma was safe and there was nothing to worry about. His life in this world was average and normal which was exactly the way he liked it... even though it was boring it was better than it was before. Before..."

He forced himself to forget, he didn't want to think about it any longer. The missing spots and nameless scenes drove him mad but the worst thing was... he looked so sad in his past life. He was a loser who would've died the same way he lived. "Pathetic," Finn told himself.

Knock knock. The door shook slightly and Finn's eyes widened in excitement. Was it Emma? "Come in!" He responded eagerly.

The door was pushed open and instead of his short teacher walking through, it was the gold-plated adventurer. "You seem happy, sorry I'm not a little girl in red clothing." Hex walked towards Finn, on closer inspection the clothes of the adventurer resembled something that could be worn on Earth.

A black leather trench coat graced with hints of blue on the shoulders and wrists, and high laced-up boots all coupled together with Hex's striking features made him look like a model out of a Vogue cover.

"Wonder who designed it." He thought to himself before snapping back to it. "Where's Mast- Emma. Where's Emma."

"Well. First things first. She's a silver-4 now, and with that comes new responsibilities. Such as quests and missions that take several days to complete."Hex looked at Finn and the boy had the most blank expression he had ever seen. "You're a copper-2 now, I put in a good word for you at the office."

"When do I get to see her?"

"That's the neat part... you don't." Hex pointed at him but slowly retracted his fingers. "You're a working adult now, with a plate to match." He tossed a copper plate at Finn's bed.

"She's injured she shouldn't move around so soon."

"She's fine. In the meantime worry about yourself, you've been given your first solo mission rookie." Hex walked toward the door of the room. "The chances of death are basically zero but keep your guard up and your client is waiting downstairs." He exited.

"Aren't you excited sir? A mission means money and money means actual food and not leftovers from Martha's kitchen." Dusk tried to best to make good of a bad situation.

"I just want a normal life." Finn grabbed his head but let go of it moments after. "Let's go, the best way to lead a normal life is to work like a normal person."

Although Hex said 'downstairs.' There weren't any steps leading to a lower floor and the directions Dusk pushed into Finn's head didn't lead down. "I can help with this sir. [MAP] A layout of the building appeared in Finn's head and he stopped walking before going back to the room he came from. "It's upstairs for crying out loud." He pushed a door open and followed the steps that led up.

Once he got to the top of the steps he could hear commotion and chatter, the sweat and oil-filled air. This was the Ianbris guild. "I never knew it had a lower floor." Finn walked up to the reception.

"Mr. Crest-Angel you are finally awake." Yelan waved at Finn who walked up to her. "Your heroic deeds are appreciated by the guild."

"What hero-" Finn remembered the spell he used to distract Quan. "Oh, that. It was nothing really."

"Still although it's our job to apologize to you, you had no business being there. You will be penalized next time if you put yourself in a quest far above your rank." Yelan cautioned him like a mother would her child, with a stern yet worried voice.

"Sorry."

"Don't be, everyone is singing your praises. Mr. Althrathor and Commander Fipl both told us how much you helped to fight the demon, with you landing multiple hits I could only wish to witness the brilliant display myself."

"What the hell did Hex say." Both Dusk and Finn thought.

"Anyways." Yelan coughed. "Your quest today is an escort, the client is Kyla Haccelasties. An orphan from the villain of BaneStead."

"Where am I taking her exactly?" Finn asked.

"Well, she didn't share the complete details but apparently she wants to 'meet' someone in her village." Yelan flipped through a book. "BaneStead is a two-day trip from Gales. You should arrive at the second city Leigrix before the end of the day that way getting an Inn would be easier."

"I see."

"I told her getting some city knights as escorts would be better, but she said she wanted someone who could protect her in case of an emergency." Yelan put down the book.

"Ok, thanks." Finn turned away.

"And wear your plate on your chest. It's mandatory for all adventurers." Yelan told him and Finn immediately put it on. "Your client is waiting at the entrance, something about the guild being sweaty."

Finn walked toward the entrance of the door, he didn't know how far Leigrix was but the sun was out already. Meaning if they wanted to make the trip they needed to get moving as soon as possible.

"Are you my escort?" A voice said from below and he looked down.

"Emma is that you?" Finn joked.

"I'm Kyla Haccelasties, who is this Emma person you speak of?"

"Sorry, it's an inside joke." Finn coughed. "I'm Finn Crest-Angel, I'm your escort to BaneStead." Finn looked at the client once more, not only was she as short as Emma they both wore red garments though Kyla covered her hair and face using a hood and mask.

"Let's go." She started walking and Finn ran behind her.

"Wait up, aren't there knights that help with this sort of thing? Why exactly do you want an adventurer's help." Finn pondered.

"Your job is to walk beside me and not to ask questions." Kyla displayed irritation.

"Can I at least know what you want? Is it just an escort or something else? I'm not the best fighter is all."

Kyla stared at Finn and after moments of thought, she realized he was in fact dumb. "I said don't talk to me."

"Okay but how's your day going so far?" Finn asked.

Kyla burst into laughter that could be heard even from behind her mask. "I'm fine."

"Now back to the question I asked before. If you need an escort why not a knight or you going with a friend?"

"I'm going back to my village to find someone." Kyla continued walking. "A man named Gin, plus those knights are too by the book. They annoy me with their stern attitude."

In an instant, a surge of memories resurfaced in Finn's mind. The person from the cave was also named Gin, coincidence? Probably. "Why?"

Kyla looked at Finn. "He saved my life, I at least owe him a thank you."

"Are you thinking what I'm thinking sir?" Dusk asked.

"Yeah... it might be a different guy but it's worth a shot. I need to know what happened in that mixer." Finn clenched his fist.
