Memphis woke up full of energy and ready to continue his learning. By the time his uncles and aunts had arrived, Memphis was already in the training grounds casting fire spells.
Donlan nodded in satisfaction. At least his work would not be difficult. The boy was hardworking. Memphis seemed to notice their presence. "Good morning uncles and aunts! See, I've been able to make my own Fire spell!" said Memphis with a smile. "Excellent! Let us see it!" commanded Donlan. Memphis nodded and closed his eyes, taking a deep breath he thrust his hands forward. "Flame whip!" he yelled. Whips of Fire coiled around his arms. Turning around, he slashed at a nearby dummy, leaving a long burn mark. Donlad and the rest of his uncles begun to clap but Memphis wasn't finished yet. Thrusting his arms forward again, the flame whips left his arms and condensed into a normal looking spear. "Flame spear! Explode!" Little Memphis yelled out, hurling the spear with all his might to another dummy. The spear exploded when it came into contact with the dummy, blasting it away. "The training ground was silent. "Did he just cast an Intermediate Fire spell?" Maureen wondered in her head in shock. "Did I do it correctly, uncle?" Memphis asked with an innocent look. His uncle forced a smile and gave him a thumbs up. "Splendid one there Memphis, where did you learn that?" he asked. "Oh I thought of it and decided to try it out!" replied Memphis. The adults were shocked but they quickly regained their composure. "Enough of that fire magic. Let's move on to the Light element," said Maureen Lerain. She walked forward and stood in front of Memphis. Memphis stood there attentively, waiting to listen to his aunt. Maureen smiled at that and then began to speak."The Light element is one of the rare elements and it signifies purity. It is also an original element which has other elements like Blessing and Healingunder it. Most often, Light element can be used to banish demonic spirits, attack and most often defend. Just remember this; Light is one of the fastest elements. It travels and strikes very quickly so your Light magic shouldn't be focused solely on defense alone. The element is a versatile one and it will only be limited by your imagination. For example, just as I can use the Light element to create a barrier to stop attacks, I can also use it to blind or disrupt the vision of my enemies. Watch carefully,"Maureen waved her hand and suddenly there was a bright flash of light in the training area. "Ugh!" Memphis covered his eyes in pain as the light disoriented his vison. "You see? This element is very useful for sneak attacks. I'll be teaching you three Light spells and as you progress I'll teach you some of our Light spells."Maureen continued speaking, "These are the spells I will be teaching you; Illuminate, Blinding flash and light barrier. Pay close attention.""Illuminate," she called. Calm glowing white light filled her palm, making the training room brighter. "Blinding flash," she said next, clapping her hands. Immediately, the calm glow exploded and became fiercer, causing Memphis to close his eyes in pain. Finally, the flash subsided and Maureen raised her hand again "Light barrier," she said. Immediately, a solidified golden white barrier appeared in front of her. Clapping her hands, she dispersed the light. "Try that," she said to Memphis.Memphis closed his eyes and focused on drawing the mana out of his body like he had been taught. Biting his lips in extreme concentration, he raised his palm. "Illuminate."Bright light emanated from his palm and filled the training room. It wasn't too bright but it wasn't too dim either. "Perfect! As expected of one having the innate ability of impeccable control!" praised Philip. Memphis dispersed the light and moved on to the second spell, Blinding flash. "Blinding flash!" he called out. Light flashed in the training area, causing the adults to close their eyes briefly. Finally, Memphis moved on to the last spell, Light barrier. This one took him longer as he had to condense his mana into a more solid state. It didn't take long and his voice came out clearly. "Light Barrier!"The barrier formed in front of him, blocking his whole body. The adults began to applaud his efforts. "Keep practicing till you totally master this. This goes for all your other spells and elements too. Remember, practice makes perfect," Maureen advised Memphis. As days and weeks passed by, Memphis continued to practice the spells he had learnt. His family had employed the services of Mage Rutherford, a famous summoner and even Duke Narsius, a Space mage who was close to the Lerains. They had taught Memphis about their respective elements and left in awe of Memphis' talent and ability to comprehend everything they taught quickly."He is one in million," remarked Duke Narsius as he was having a discussion with Arius concerning Memphis. "His progress in magic is shocking. I won't be to surprised if he breaks through to the Intermediate Mage level at ten," he said.Master Rutherford though had discovered something more shocking. The Summoning element didn't allow Mages to summon till they became Advanced mages due to mana requirements and strength but Memphis was an exception. He could summon his first beast if he broke through to the Intermediate level! The one which shocked him the most was that Memphis had the chance to contract more than one beast as his summons!Memphis worked hard each day, aiming to perfect his spells. Very soon, his mastery over his mana was as good as that of an Advanced mage. Now, Memphis had more than 10 spells of different uses learnt under each of his combat elements; Fire, Space and Light. One time Ralph came over to visit. "My mom said you're far stronger than me now. Let's have a duel so I can prove her wrong!" he said proudly. "Be my guest," Memphis shrugged.Arudiz was made to be the referee to step in incase things went out of hand. Memphis and Ralph faced each other in the southern training area. "Go all out boys. I'll be here to prevent you from getting hurt," said Arudiz with his usual mocking smile. "Begin!"Immediately Ralph opened his arms wide and purple lightning began to crackle at his finger tips. "Shock arc!" he cried, flinging his spell in Memphis' direction. "Too weak, try harder," taunted Memphis as he formed a light barrier which blocked the attack. Memphis pointed his finger at Ralph and called out, "Immolation!" A gout of fire left his fingertips and Ralph hurriedly dodged to get out of the way. "Lightning steps," he called, moving with speed to the side to commence his attack anew. "Ha! I dodged your attack!" Ralph gloated. Memphis gave him a wicked smile and that was when Ralph realised something was wrong."Aw shit!" he groaned as he had to duck again. This was because the Immolation spell he dodged had come back to him courtesy of Memphis' spatial element. While he was dodging, Memphis cast a blinding flash which disoriented Ralph and finally fired a Flame explosion spell. "This match is over said Arudiz calmly as he blocked the spell with his bare hands and didn't seem hurt. Memphis realized he didn't even notice when he moved. "How come I lost?" said Ralph in shock. "You're too cocky and flashy," taunted Memphis."Hmmpf! Next time I will defeat you. You just wait " said Ralph as he headed back to his house with fire in his eyes. The adults watching were amused at Ralph's behaviour and surprised by Memphis' composure and magic ability. "He is a true prodigy. I don't think anyone at his level is his match," sighed Arius Lerain. Now Memphis had been able to master how to use magic. One day he was sitting in thought recollecting some of his memories back when he was on Earth. On Earth, He wasn't an exercise maniac like most young guys were because of his situation. Back in the gang, there were a lot of guys obsessed with keeping their body in shape. Memphis recalled a saying in his past world that a sound mind resided in a sound body. Thus, if he wants to become a great Mage, he must train both his body and mind. For the training of the mind, practicing of meditation would be the sure fire way to train his mind. Also, the constant use of magic and spells served as training for the mind too. Memphis decided to make it a point to always have a two hour meditation session in the morning and a three hour meditation session in the evening, making a total of five hours. He had long noticed that after becoming a Mage, his eyesight, clarity of thought and senses had become stronger than before. He could now sense mana
Memphis was now seven years. It had been two years after his Awakening ceremony and since then he had improved by leaps and bounds. Unlike other nobles who were wasting their time on social parties and splurging family wealth, Memphis was always indoors training and cultivating. Had it not been for his mother sometimes making him visit Ralph and go around the capital, he wouldn't have stepped foot out of the house. Due to this, all the maids, servants and guards respected Memphis because he wasn't a wastrel or snobbish young master. Memphis had kept up his strict training regimen and his body had developed very well. His body was now very strong and to his surprise he noticed that the stronger his body got, the more he was able to use magic freely without any hitch. His muscles had developed and his stomach had smoothed out, showing signs of hard abs. Memphis had long decided to incorporate some boxing and martial arts into his regimen too. Thus he had stopped attacking the training
For Mages, especially those of Noble birth who started early on the path of magic at the tender age of five, the time they broke through to become Advanced mages ranged from five to seven years so by the time they became Intermediate mages, they would be 10 to 12 years old. One was considered a genius if made it into the Intermediate level at the age of 10.On the other hand, normal mages who begun their journey at the ages of 10 and 11 normally became Intermediate Mages at 15 to 18 years. There were some though who broke through far earlier or later.Memphis was cultivating in the family cultivation room as he always did but he sensed something different these past few weeks. His elements were growing further apart and they were all pulsating with energy, showing signs of instability and restlessness. Memphis had read and knew it was a natural occurrence when one was about to breakthrough so he wasn't worried. It would be a great shock though if he managed to become an Intermediate m
Mages most often formed spells for their use. Even though technically, mages could create spells, only a select few could create spells of a higher level. Most Noble families had their trademark spells which were destructive spells made by powerful mages in their family. Creating spells at a young age or level and even above one's level was unheard off. That was why Memphis' uncles were shocked when he created an Intermediate spell when he was only a Beginner Mage.Spell creation is a delicate process so the Mage had to have a clear idea of what spell he was going to create. In spell creation, there were many trials and errors as the Mage had to deliberately construct his mana and magic in the shape of his spell to bring it out. Of all the forms of spell creation, creating spells of one element was the easiest while combining two or more elements was the hardest. This was the reason why mages with two or more elements had an edge over those with one element because spells which are fo
Memphis had now become nine years old. Apart from meeting Ralph and going round the city with his family, Memphis rarely came out of the Lerain family mansion. His second bedrooms were the cultivation room and training area. That was where one would always find him. Irias Lerain sat behind his desk reading a letter he had received. The letter was from the King of the Daris kingdom. He wanted to meet all the Noble families in the kingdom apparently to discuss an urgent issue and also allow their kids to meet each other and interact as they would be taking over from their parents and would need to foster good relationships when they grew up. This event was going to be held in the Jade Pavillion in the royal palace. Irias was pleased as this would allow Memphis to at least meet other young nobles of his age and form good relationships as he had become more like a recluse. Had it not been for them dragging him out sometimes for parties and gatherings, he probably wouldn't know the capita
The Lerains were the last to arrive so after a few minutes of socializing, all the adults withdrew into the inner room of the Jade Pavillion which was sealed with soundproof spells to prevent eavesdropping, leaving the kids alone in the big room. There were seats available so all of them took a seat. The king had a small throne in the room which he promptly sat on. Beside him was his right hand man, Stefan, a powerful mage. There were murmurs as the nobles present all were speculating on the issue which had forced the king to summon all of them to gather here."Nobles present and ministers, as we all know, many promising mages are being abducted from most kingdoms with our kingdom not being an exception. Before I elaborate further, I have good news and bad news for all of you," said King Muriel, looking around with all seriousness. King Muriel was a tall man with a handsome face and blonde hair. He had the elements of Air, Lightning,Water and Blood and bone element, having a gold Affi
The servants sensed the intent to fight in the air but did nothing. They would not interfere till things were about to go out of hand. After all, they were expecting an occurrence like this. There had never been a time where nobles had met and a fight hadn't occurred. Their only surprise was that it had taken this long. They moved out to watch the battle silently. Outside, the sky was a dark blue with twinkling stars and a crescent moon. The noble kids had grouped in front of the Jade Palace, eager to spectate the duel. Memphis and Claud stood fifty meters apart, looking fiercely at each other. "Who is going to be the referee?" asked Catherine, looking at the servants who were standing behind. "I will," volunteered an elderly servant. His elderly looks were just a guide as he was a peak Epic Mage! "Very good, then let's begin," said Catherine, turning around. The elderly servant walked forward and stood in between Memphis and Claud. "Go all out. Battle ends when I deem it fit, one of
"Is this all you got Claud? Pathetic," scoffed Memphis. Playtime was over, it was time to give Claud a taste of true fire!••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••Back in the inner room, the nobles were wrapping up with their discussions. Reluctantly, they agreed to allow their kids to attend the magic school when they turned twelve. Andrew West, the head of the Daris Royal Academy spoke again. "Honourable nobles, please be reminded that even though in terms of accommodation and protection, that of your kids will be better than that of others, hey will have to work hard and compete with each other for resources. Due to this change, we have restructured our magic educational system for all the schools so that we can bring out the best in the kids. This means that your kids will have to take a compulsory entrance test to determine their resources," Andrew West sat down. Some of the nobles were displeased with this new change but they couldn't complain as they
