A loud, mocking laughter suddenly filled the entire room as Lewis burst into a hearty laughter. Matilda’s face flushed in embarrassment and the look in her guests’ eyes changed as they stared at her. There was no mistaking it now and certainly no need for them to hide how they felt towards her any longer. Lewis was the first to sneer at her. “Come on, Aunt Matilda, Joshua Mendes, your self-proclaimed butler went out with Claire just when we need him? How convenient!” “None of us here is a child. We’ve all used this same trick once or twice in our life, so we know very well you’ve plotted with this lowlife you call your butler to say Joshua Mendes is out of the house.” “Say the truth, how much did you give the original owner of this house just so you can lie to our face and treat us like children?” Matilda’s nose reddened in rage as she yelled at him, “Lewis William, watch what you sayh! I would never lie to anyone here. This house is really mine!” Lewis huffed in ridicule, “Oh,
Chloe’s tired eyes which were half-way closed, flew open and took in the sight before her. Honey was scared seeing the strangers in their house and scurried closer to her mother. Chloe bent slightly and scooped her into her arms protectively. She didn’t remember Matilda had invited people from the party last night. She raised her eyes to meet Matilda’s and asked solemnly, “Mother, what is going on? Who are these people and what are they doing in our house?” Before Matilda could reply, Lewis leaned away from the wall and sneered in contempt. “What is this? Is your entire family really trying to deceive us into thinking you own this house? How shameless!” The guests believed him without thinking twice and and lashed out at Matilda. “Mrs. Miller, unlike you, we have better things to do than stay in a house belonging to someone else. Hurry up and hold up to your own end of the bargain by slapping yourself across the face until Lewis William is satisfied!”“Yes, do that! I’ve heard
The words were yet out of his mouth when Lewis sneered in disgust. “What? You’ll call the Minister? What kind of joke is that?!” “If you wish to lie, at least say something believable. The Minister isn’t someone just anyone can see, you fool!” Adam, who had been silent the whole time, huffed and stepped forward. “You say we will slap ourselves in the face if you call the minister and she does come to verify the authenticity of the signature on the deed of the house, but what will you do if you can’t bring her?” Lewis didn’t wait for Ethan to answer and huffed, “I know, grandfather. Claire and Aunt Matilda will hand over the gifts they took from Charles Wilkins. Then you’ll also slap yourselves in the face to our satisfaction!” Adam hummed in approval, “That sounds right.” Matilda panicked and grabbed Ethan’s shirt roughly. “What do you think you’re doing? We can’t give them the gifts from Charles Wilkins for any reason because they are Claire’s betrothal gifts!” Chloe turned to
Lewis hissed and took the phone down when he heard the call disconnect tone. “Tsk! This cunt hung up. She probably realized she’s been caught impersonating the minister!” Adam clasped his hands behind him and sneered at Ethan in disgust. “Not only did you lie to your wife and her family into believing this house is yours, you’re now trying to trick grown-up like us into believing you just called the minister. Have you no shame, Ethan Black?!” One of the guests stepped forward and harrumphed impatiently. “I can’t stand his shamelessness any longer. Why don’t we talk to the security in front? I’m sure they will be more than happy to know they’ve been treating the wrong people as the owner of this house!” Others nodded in agreement. “Yes, I agree. They’ll be able to drag him out and put him in his place better than we can.” Honey shuddered and wrapped her arms even tighter around Chloe’s neck.“Mommy, these strangers are scary. Are they street thugs? I don’t want them in our hous
“Wh-what? Are you sure that’s him?” “Are your eyes not working? I’m holding up a picture of him on my phone and you’re looking at him, yet you still ask if I’m sure?” “It’s him. It’s really him everybody. There’s no mistaken him!” Lewis drew his lips into a thin line and walked up to the person holding up his phone. “Don’t tell such a joke. How can it be him? If it’s him, doesn’t that mean this house really belongs to this pathetic Ethan?” However, as soon as he laid eyes on the man on the photo, he went mute. The guest whose phone had been snatched from him, took it back and huffed in annoyance. “Are you eyes not functioning too? This man in the photo and the one standing before us are the same person!” Lewis still refused to believe as he gnashed his teeth and shook his head in denial. “I-impossible! That’s impossible!” “Chloe, how could you be so bold to hire a man who looks like Joshua Mendes just to fool us into believing this house is really yours?”Claire dropped the b
Everyone turned to see a group of men in black suit and dark sunshades hurriedly walking towards them with a serious look on their faces. When they got to the front, they halted and made a path in their midst. Only then did everyone see a sophisticated woman who seemed to be in her late 20s walking forward majestically. She was wearing a stylish, form-fitting black suit that featured a double-breasted blazer with prominent gold buttons. The blazer had a structured design, emphasizing her waist and giving her a sleek, tailored look. Accompanied with it was a matching black trouser. It was high-waisted, long, and flared out slightly towards the bottom, elongating her legs. She completed the outfit with pointed black shoes that peeked out from underneath the trousers. She wore her long, dark hair loose letting it cascade down her side. Matilda would’ve been the first to ask who she was and what she was doing in their house if she wasn’t scared by the frightening men in suit behind
Everyone instantly fell silent. Lewis blinked his eyes numerous times before he huffed shamelessly, “Slap ourselves on the face, you say.” “Does that mean you will heartlessly stand by as your father-in-law slaps himself on the face to your satisfaction?” “What?” Matilda didn’t know when she blurted out in surprise. “What? Are you that heartless you will really insist that your father-in-law who is old and feeble slap himself on the face?” Matilda clenched her teeth tightly unable to come up with anything to defend herself with. Seeing she had gone quiet, Lewis grew even bolder. “You’re not saying anything which means you will! Do you even have a conscience, Matilda Brown?!” Seeing his blackmail was working, the guests quickly added fuel to the fire to save their selves too. “You’re even worse than I thought you were.” “Poor man. Other people have daughter-in-laws who protect them, but he has one that wants him to slap himself in the face right in front of so many people.”
Her assistant raised his eyes and cautiously reminded her, “Minister Montgomery, weren’t they just talking about some kind of bargain? Apparently, it has something to do with them slapping themselves on the face.” Lewis, who was still reeling from the shock of what she said to him, instinctively refuted him through clenched teeth. “What are you talking about? How does the bargain we had have anything to do with you?” Claire placed a hand akimbo on her waist and scoffed, “What do you mean, Lewis? You should keep to your own end of the bargain by…” Lewis didn’t wait for her to finish as he instantly cut her off by shouting, “Shut your darn mouth, Claire William! Do you even have a conscience? How could you keep insisting that our grandfather slap himself on the face just to satisfy your ego?!” Claire was taken aback by his words as she also found it unproper that her grandfather was to slap himself. No matter what, Adam was her grandfather. So it naturally didn’t sit well with her
