"Okay, one round with you only using martial arts, and then one round with you going all out. Fair warning, I won't just be playing defense this time, I will attack and counter," Ifeus informed me.
"Fine by me," I replied with a nod."You can do it, To! Kick his ass!" Called out Lilac with a grin, waving at me.Both her and Iris were seated on the stairs, watching this. I could do without the audience, but I highly doubt they'd leave just because I told them to."Wha-...hey, come on, you're going to hurt your dear old dad's feelings, Li," Responded Ifeus with a wistful sigh."If I'm being honest, I'm rooting for Topaz too...I did train him for quite a while, so he's kinda my student. It'd be nice to see him give you a run for your money, at the very least," Chimed in Iris with a smirk."Well, now, looks like I'm gonna have to take this seriously. Nothing personal, kid...but I gotta look cool for my daughters!" He declared as he met my gaze."Yeah, nothing you just said was anywhere near even remotely cool. Go on then, Apex Mage, take a fight against a fourteen year old newbie seriously. Beat the crap out of me, that's totally gonna make you look cool," I taunted him in response."Crap, good point...ah, whatever, I'll just go with the flow. Whenever you're ready, feel free to attack," He replied, getting into a stance as he gestured at me to come at him."Alright, then...here I come," I muttered, as I shot forward at top speed."Oh, you've gotten faster," He remarked with a raised eyebrow, before evading as I closed in on him and drove a sharp punch towards him with my left fist.As he dodged my fist by jumping off to his right, I swiftly shifted the position of my right foot, adjusting my center of balance as I halted my punch and bent my arm, before rapidly swinging my elbow out towards his chest. He quickly sprang back in response, my elbow starting to thud into his chest before he leapt out of my reach, before the full force of my strike could hit him.I then used the momentum to shuffle my feet across, turning my body to face the direction he was in while maintaining my balance, before zipping towards him as he landed.I leapt towards him as his feet hit the ground, intending to close in on him before he could fully regain his balance, but he's hardly off-balance at all...I suppose that's only natural, with him being an Apex Mage, his physical condition is far superior to mine. He's definitely not going all out, he hasn't used any Magic yet for one thing. And with me only using martial arts, I wouldn't be able to even come close to landing a strike if that was the case. Well, either way, I have no choice but to attack as aggressively and proactively as I can, I won't get anywhere if I go on the defensive instead. He planted his feet as I closed in on him, deflecting my right fist with his left hand as I drove a punch towards him, before I wildly swung my left fist at him. He swiftly halted the swing of my arm by grabbing hold of my forearm, tightening his grip around it."Come on, you can do a lot better than that, that last attack was just-...," He began, before abruptly trailing off as I grabbed both his wrists with my hands, sharply twisting my left arm to weaken his grip over it and give myself the opportunity to grab his right wrist...good thing he grabbed my left forearm instead of my wrist, that gave me just enough leverage and flexibility to grab his right wrist when I twisted my left arm, but I think I might've tweaked something in my forearm, there's a sharp pain around the middle of it..."I've got you now!" I exclaimed as I sprang up and rapidly drove my right knee towards his chest as fast as I could, while tightening my grip on his wrists as sharply as I could, doing my best to ignore the twinging pain in my left forearm.Him being an Apex Mage, I can't possibly hope to match him in terms of brute strength, but that's fine...I just needed to create a wide enough opening to exploit and make use of to land a hit!"[Spatial Art: Telekinetic Shockwave]!" He rapidly chanted in alarm, a powerful shockwave bursting out from him right as my knee made contact with and began to drive into his chest, before I was abruptly sent flying back with immense force.Th-this is bad...!As my back slammed onto a wall painfully, I let out a sharp gasp as intense waves of pain burst out across my back, before collapsing onto my hands and knees as I uttered a weak groan.Damn it, he chanted so quickly, I didn't even think it was humanly possible to speak so fast. And that chant was, like, ten syllables, but he didn't even stutter slightly.Feel like I'd only be able to blurt out gibberish if I tried to chant so quickly...well, not that I need to, since I can use chantless casting.O-on a more immediately relevant note, I-I'm...I'm in so much pain right now..."O-oh, crap, that might've been a bit too-...u-uh, you okay over there, Topaz?" Inquired Ifeus nervously, walking over as he gingerly rubbed the spot on his chest my knee had collided with."Definitely...n-not...okay...," I muttered in pain, unable to stand up."What the hell, dad!? That was way overkill!" Frowned Lilac indignantly, rushing over towards me with a vial in hand, before kneeling down beside me with a worried look on her face as she opened the vial, "Here, it's a Healing Elixir, To, drink up.""Thanks, appreciate it...," I replied gratefully, opening my mouth before she poured the Elixir in.I gulped it down, a trickle of the liquid running down the corner of my mouth as I let out a strained sigh of relief, the pain rapidly fading as my injuries healed."Sorry about that, I panicked a bit and reacted on instinct back there. That was a good move...using a seemingly clumsy attack to create an opening. You almost landed the full brunt of that knee strike too, well done," Remarked Ifeus in approval, as he helped me up.A few compliments aren't gonna be enough to make me forget that he hit me with an Apex Tier Art, even if it wasn't at full blast..."I really wanna punch you in the face right now...""A-anyway, uh...let's take a five minute break and move on to the second round, shall we?""You know, now that I think about it, wouldn't it make more sense for me to be the one who tests Topaz? Even if I don't hold back at all, he won't be completely overwhelmed, which will certainly be the case if you go all out, dad," Remarked Iris objectively. "Oh, it's fine. I can assess his current level a lot better if I'm the one sparring against him than if I was just watching him fight someone else. And after that first round, Topaz, I can confidently say that you'll be easily able to pass yourself off as a Martial Artist, an Ascended Mage of the Physical Class, with solely your hand to hand combat skills. I mean, there's no way in hell that a Basic Mage could ever land a hit on me, and you came close to landing two! Actually, considering the level you're currently at...I'd say you've been at the required level for at least a few weeks now. I know it's been a while since I last checked in on your progress, but you've exceeded my expectations, I'm intrigued to see how far you've c
"I wanna know too, what did you do back there? The speed you displayed was incredible, not to mention the amount of force you generated behind your punch," Remarked Iris with an intrigued look on her face. "Well, it's kinda simple, actually. About a couple of weeks ago, I realized that the three Arts of my Ether Mage Ascended Tier don't necessarily have to be used in the same sequence. Ether Materialization manifests Ether outside of my body, Ether Modelling lets me control and give shape to the manifested Ether, and Ether Emission lets me fire it out. Obviously, I can't use Ether Emission without first using the previous two Arts. Well, I technically can skip Ether Modelling, but then my output has no real shape or momentum to it, resulting in a weak attack. I can also technically use Ether Materialization on its own, but that limits me to using the manifested Ether at close range only. The game changer was when I realized that I can use Ether Modelling without using Ether Material
"So, tomorrow's the big day, To. Well, you excited?" Inquired Lilac, as I finished up my breakfast. "I'm not sure...I guess I'm equal parts excited and nervous? Maybe a little anxious too. And the fact that my daily routine will now be interrupted is pretty bittersweet...well, mostly bitter. Yeah, that about sums up my feelings on the subject," I surmised wryly. "I don't get you, To. I know I'd feel super restless and impatient if I'd been stuck indoors for over four months. Come on, you should be way more excited about this," She grinned in response. "Sure, I'll just change the way I feel because you said I should, that's super doable," I replied dryly. A couple of days have passed since my sparring matches against Ifeus. And tomorrow, I'll officially be joining his Magic Guild, Solaris. Incidentally, it's also my birthday tomorrow, my first since the start of my current memories. Today's the 19th of April, the year is 505 PA, the date on the day I first woke up here was the 2nd
"So, what exactly is this game?" I asked her, as she entered my room, holding a pack of cards. "It's a pretty simple card game, it's a deck of thirty cards, we each hold three cards in our hands at a time. Each card has one of three symbols on it...rock, paper and scissors. We both play one card each turn, and then the rules of rock-paper-scissors apply," She explained, as she sat on my bed, across from me. "Oh, okay, so it's just rock-paper-scissors in card form, then?" I surmised in bemusement. She wasn't kidding when she said that this is a simple game. I suppose it could be a slightly more fun way of playing rock-paper-scissors, but it seems kinda boring, especially for a game that she picked herself. There's gotta be more to-... "Hehehe...come now, who do you think I am? Obviously there's more to it than that! Did you really think I'd waste money on a game that's got nothing more to it that just rock-paper-scissors in card form?" She responded smugly, as she opened the pack an
"...""...""...""S-so...shall we, uh, continue the game?" Stuttered Lilac quietly, breaking the silence. After, uh, you know, THAT happened, I lifted her off my lap and turned away, feeling absolutely mortified as I calmed myself down. She was pretty quiet too, which means she probably realized what it was that, uh...p-poked her. "I-I think we should just stop already, I told you it had to be age-restricted for a reason...," I muttered, my gaze fixed downwards, as I was unable to look her in the eye. "Wh-what, are you chicken? Come on, you aren't scared, a-are you?" She taunted me, poking my shoulder a couple of times...but her taunts are definitely a lot less spirited than usual. This is painfully awkward. "You should be more worried about it than me...I-I mean, I bet that was a super unpleasant experience for you, and it might get even worse from here, s-so...," I trailed off. "Well, um...I guess it was kinda awkward, b-but I wouldn't go so far as to say that it was unpleasan
"Are you ready to get going?" Inquired Ifeus with a smile, as I made my way down the stairs. "As ready as I'll ever be, I guess...but, uh, what's with this outfit?" I inquired in bemusement. "That's your gear. It's made of highly durable, but still quite light and flexible, leather. You're about to be a Guild Mage, so you might as well look the part, right?" He grinned with a thumbs up. "Okay, first off...I'm only going to register today, aren't I? So what I'm wearing really shouldn't make any difference either way. And second...I feel kinda exposed," I frowned apprehensively. It's the next day, the 20th of April, 505 PA, which happens to be my birthday, and I was just about to head out to the Guild with Ifeus. Lilac's gonna be tagging along too, while Iris is busy on a Quest in another city at the moment. A few minutes ago, Ifeus handed me this new outfit, to use as battle gear. So, I went back up to my room and changed into it, but, uh...it's kinda missing something. It consist
"Ah, good to see you, Rex. You seem to be full of energy this morning," Ifeus greeted him with a smile. "So, this is guy you were talking about before, huh, Master? He sure doesn't look all that impressive...and what's with the dumb hair?" Frowned the redhead, narrowing his eyes at me as he peered at my face, "That's one girly face you've got there...tell me, you have any experience fighting Monsters or anything?"Yeah, I already don't like this guy."Hey, there's no need to be such an asshole about it, Rex," Responded Lilac coldly. "Stay out of this, Lilac. This is between me and the pretty boy," Replied Rex, continuing to glare at me. "Hi, I'm Topaz Oriole, and I'm the guy not judging someone based on their appearance. Nice to meet you, dickhead," I responded dryly. "Come on, Master, there's just no way this guy's strong enough to start off at the same rank as me! He's obviously got no experience whatsoever," Scoffed Rex dismissively. "That may be true, but he's more than strong
"Hm...? Oh, hey, Master...g'morning," Yawned the person sleeping on the stairs lazily, sitting up groggily. A little girl? She looks younger than Lilac...but Lilac has previously mentioned that she's the youngest member in the Guild. Maybe this girl's another new member like me? "I thought I told you to stop sleeping down here," Sighed Ifeus in response."But it's so nice and cool down here...," She muttered sleepily, before turning her gaze this way, "Huh? What's going on? Why are there so many people down here?"Hm? Oh, looks like pretty much everyone in the Guild followed us down here. I didn't even notice. "We're holding a duel, you might as well stay and watch. Oh, let me introduce you, Topaz...this is Sapphire Roselle. She's an Apex Mage, specifically an Ice Mage. Sapphire, this is Topaz Oriole, our newest member, an Ascended Mage, a Martial Artist to be specific. Since you're both named after gemstones, I'm sure you'll get along," Remarked Ifeus with a grin. "Come on, that's
