As Ruth struggled in vain, one of the henchmen spoke up.
"Boss, the bitch hasn't paid the installment for six months. She owes ten grand every month to compensate the Coopers.“
”But every time, she sent us off with old furniture instead. I just checked the house and found only thirty-two dollars in her stash."
The leader spat with disdain.
"You filthy scum of a woman! Where are you hiding our money?"
Ruth wailed in pain and tried to explain herself.
"I'm sorry, mister. But my husband's wages are quite low. We don't have enough for three meals a day. Please forgive us..."
"Do you think this is a joke, wench? Is the Cooper family going to be fooled by your lies?"
Ruth joined her hands, crying profusely.
"Please, I am telling you the truth… Wait! I'll sell some cutlery to neighbors and try to arrange five hundred dollars. I promise! Please give me fifteen minutes."
The leader's eyes were bloodshot in anger.
"Five hundred? Have we come here to collect spare change, bitch?”
“Maybe you aren't taking us seriously. I think breaking your arms will teach you a good lesson!"
He extended out her arm and raised his foot to stomp her.
"Take your filthy hands off her!" Tyler warned with a commanding voice. "If you want to live, you will step away from her!"
The leader turned towards the young man who had just walked onto the porch.
"Who the hell are you?"
Ruth's face put on a look of dismay.
"No, Tyler! They are dangerous people! Gangsters! Save yourself! Run and hide!"
The gang leader scanned him from head to toe.
"So you are Tyler Grant? Are you out of prison already? Good thing we spotted you. Time to shell out one and a half million dollars you owe the Coopers!"
Tyler's eyes became cold and distant, as if he was barely listening to the thug.
Inside him, a volcano was about to explode.
"I won't pay you a single penny. Neither will my family.”
“Today is the day your brutality ends. Now unhand my mother before you lose your life."
The goons broke into hysterical laughter.
"Do you know who I am?" the leader asked bashfully.
"I don't know who you are, and I don't care!"
The leader guffawed.
"Boy! Since you were gone for three years, you are ignorant. I am Huxley, the leader of the Hux gang.”
“Everyone in this locality is scared to death of my name. Your machismo will disappear when I break all your limbs!"
Tyler was unmoved by the gang leader's threats.
"Are you good at terrorizing elderly and disabled people only? You don't scare me at the least!"
Huxley gritted his teeth and let Ruth go.
He felt emasculated for a moment since he was caught dragging and beating a crippled, helpless woman.
It would do well for his reputation if he were to beat up a young man instead.
Tyler straightened Ruth's wheelchair and helped her get on it.
"Go inside the house, Mom. I'll deal with these punks."
Ruth eyed her son nervously.
"Is it necessary to get into a fight? If I grovel before the gangster enough and take some beating, he may give us an extension.”
“Besides, you already have a criminal record. It may get you in trouble with the law. I don't want to see my son in prison again!"
Tyler turned and gave her a reassuring nod.
"You don't have to beg or even lower your head, Mom. From today onwards, no one will bother us. I promise."
Ruth looked uncertain, but her son's conviction made her feel secure suddenly.
She followed his instructions and entered the house.
"If your sob drama is over, it's time for you to become a cripple like your mother!"
Huxley spat with a smirk.
"Bring it on!"
Huxley signaled one of his men, and the latter lunged at Tyler with a swinging arm.
The young man stepped out of the way dexterously and landed a powerful chop on the goon's back.
The latter hit the ground like a bag of sand.
Huxley looked stunned.
What just happened? Could the loser guy really fight? Perhaps it was a fluke?
He figured he needed to step up the attack by a notch.
The gang leader gestured to all his five remaining men, and they gradually surrounded Tyler.
"Let's see how you fare against all of us!"
The goons rushed at Tyler together, aiming punches and kicks at him.
There was no way to escape or evade.
The young man's eyes shifted with lightning speed.
He moved his limbs even faster.
Bam! Bam!
His attacks hit them like a whirlwind.
The five goons bit the dust before they could realize what happened.
Huxley's jaw was left hanging.
How did a young man like Tyler learn to fight like that?
It couldn't be a coincidence or fluke at all.
The leader decided to try different tactics.
"It seems you learned a few tricks in prison. Good for you. But you're still a pathetic loser whose girlfriend is marrying another man. Shame!"

266 The Prophecies
Amelia straightened, letting her playful demeanor slip away. “I know who you are, Victor.”The Mayor raised an eyebrow, fishing for meaning. “Well… As the leader of the most powerful military-industrial city, I must say that many people are familiar with me. I don’t see why you wouldn’t—”“I’m not playing games, Victor Cromwell. Or must I call you Victor Damone?”The man’s expression hardened, but he did not respond immediately.Amelia smirked slightly. “Surprised? I know the prophecy, too—the Peerless Man with a Thousand Gifts. There’s no point denying it.“The room went still. Victor stared at her for an entire minute silently. When he spoke, his voice was calm, but there was an edge to it. “What else do you know? Especially about the prophecy.”Amelia didn’t blink. “I know you’re part of the triad prophecies: The Gilded Man with a Thousand Lives, The Peerless Man with a Thousand Gifts, and Eve of a Thousand Wakes.”His fingers tapped once on the desk, a flicker of surprise crossing
265 The Lieutenant Mayor
The military stronghold, Fort Cromwell, loomed over Springfield like a steel monolith. Its gray, impenetrable walls blended into the smoky sky of the industrial city. It looked like a monstrous building in a dystopian future.Amelia Briar’s car was finally allowed inside after scrutiny of her visiting papers. Apparently, Springfield’s Mayor did not allow non-citizens to enter the city without permission. After all, it was the country’s largest supplier of firearms.Inside the stronghold, the air was sharp with the tang of metal. Amelia kept reminding herself that this was a place built for war, not comfort. She stood in a sterile chamber, her arms crossed as two lady soldiers faced her. Their uniforms were crisp, and their expressions blank.“Strip,” one of them barked. “Down to nothing. We need to check for weapons.”Amelia’s lips pressed into a thin line, but she didn’t argue. She’d never get access to the Mayor without going through the security checks. The young woman shrugged off

“Bingo.” Ashley’s eyes gleamed. “Mine are pretty cool if I do say so myself. I discovered them the hard way though.”Natalie was star-struck. “What are they?”“Well… I get visions—snippets of the future. They’re usually about unfortunate and horrific tragedies. And the big one?” She leaned in. “I can die and come back. Rewind time and start over. Done it several times, many of which weren’t voluntary.”Natalie stared at the woman, her mouth dry. “You’re serious? That is epic! But I can understand time travel since I know it to be possible. Tyler did it once to save Kat.”Ashley raised an eyebrow. “Oh, did he? He must have lost a great deal in the process. The men of prophecy can’t do time travel seamlessly like me. The point is, you’ve got something too. We just don’t know what yet.”Before Natalie could process that, a group of men approached—three of them. They were in crisp, expensive suits and brandished oily, perverted smiles. The leader leaned on their table, his breath heavy wi

Natalie Anderson stepped out of the elevator, her sneakers squeaking faintly against the polished marble floor. It was a high-rise lobby, much fancier than the one back home at Anderson Industries. Norwich City glittered through the floor-to-ceiling windows. It was a sprawl of lights and noise. She had always wanted to visit Norwich as a child, having heard stories of its majestic ports and gargantuan ships. However, right now, her mind was too tangled to take in the grandeur. Tyler’s words echoed in her head: Go to Norwich. Find out what it means to carry Eve’s womb. It’s bigger than us, Nat. Find out more about yourself. His voice had been urgent, almost pleading and caring then. It didn’t matter anymore. They were broken up. But life didn’t end there. She had to find her origin. The receptionist waved her toward a private elevator with a curt gesture. “Ms. Anderson? Top floor, Ms. Palmer’s waiting for you.” Natalie nodded, stepping inside. The ride up was silent, the numbers cli
262 Immortality
Tyler wished the Lady of the Lake had given him at least a few seconds' head start before unpausing time. He saw Veronica's bat arcing toward Yara's skull. A thick smear of glee and satisfaction marred her evil grin. Perhaps the murder of someone helpless and unarmed was a fetish for her and Dagon. However, Tyler was no longer helpless. His mystical energy connection had not returned. But he had the Excalibur now, a weapon that transcended the mystics and the divine. There was no time to hesitate—every moment counted. With a surge of adrenaline, he launched himself forward. As expected, the young man's super-speed had returned. Tyler closed the gap in a split second. And dealt his blow in the second. The Excalibur gleamed in his hand as he swung, the blade slicing through the air with purpose. The first cut landed hard, hacking off Veronica's arm just above the elbow. Her scream was blood-curdling but very satisfactory to Tyler's ears. The severed portion of her arm fell to t
261 The Sword of Destiny
Tyler rubbed his eyes with a shaky hand, half convinced he’d hit his head too hard. Of course, he had dealt with gods and goddesses before, but they were part of scripture and mythology. This particular fantasy story coming to life was rather incredible.“This isn’t real,” the young man muttered. “No way this is happening.” But it was as real as rain. The Arthurian legends he’d read about as a kid—knights in armor, magic swords, enchanted ladies—were crashing into his life right here, right now.Still battling with death, he let out a shaky laugh. “I’m in a storybook. A freaking fairy tale.”Tyler’s body ached terribly, his injuries still bleeding and excruciating. However, beyond the pain, he realized something strange. It was the world around him. Everything had stopped, like someone had hit pause on a movie.Tyler turned his head to see Veronica standing a few yards away, her gnarled baseball bat raised high, mid-swing toward Yara’s head.Yara was immobilized, her eyes wide in horr
