Early in the morning, in a VIP ward of the City's hospital, an unconscious figure on the bed suddenly opened his eyes with a loud cry, "Mother!"

"What's wrong? Does your head ache?" The nurse who was checking his vitals rushed to his side. She quickly reached out to check the newly wrapped gauze around his head.

Maverick didn't respond to the nurse's question. Instead he closed his eyes and inhaled deeply.

While unconscious, fragmented images and fleeting scenes flashed through his mind like an old, broken film reel. Familiar faces blurred with strangers, and memories long forgotten resurfaced. Some faces brought comfort, others dread.

He remembered vividly the night his family was attacked when he was just seventeen. His father had been killed in the chaos, blood staining the floor as his mother desperately tried to flee with him.

But they didn’t make it far. They were caught, and he was torn from her arms, their screams still echoing in his mind.

His mother’s face remained hazy, yet he could feel her anguish—hear the raw agony in her cries as they were separated. Why his family was targeted, why his father was killed, he couldn’t recall.

The next day, Maverick was sold. His captors led him and others like him to a remote island, where survival became their only goal. Every day brought brutal, devilish training that pushed them beyond their limits.

Maverick remembered that the arduous treatment had broken some of his friends. Life on the island was merciless, and every waking moment was consumed by one thought: survive.

For a year, Maverick endured the island’s horrors. At eighteen, he finally learned the truth—he hadn’t just been sold; he had been recruited into a syndicate.

And the price of growing up in that place was survival itself! Maverick remembered the syndicate’s leader, a delusional, fictitious man, believed the island hid treasures beyond imagination—treasures that they desperately needed to find.

Thus, Maverick's first mission, after two years on the island, was to locate a mysterious box rumored to contain powerful, enchanted relics that have been long forgotten.

However, the mission was a disaster. They found the box, but in doing so, they triggered the wrath of an enemy faction. A brutal war broke out, and Maverick’s team was quickly overpowered.

Maverick clutched the hospital gown tightly, his mind replaying the final moments with his teammates. They had sacrificed everything including their lives to ensure his escape.

But instead, he ended up at a hospital in a strange city with no memories of them... And that was where he met the late grandfather Beaumont.

"The box..." Maverick whispered to himself. "I have to find that box."

"Sir, I'm talking to you... Does your head hurt or does it ache somewhere else?" The nurse disrupted Maverick's thoughts and brought him back to reality. "I should call the doctor. He did mention you suffered a concussion. He will give you a proper check-up."

"Wait..." Maverick stopped her before she left. "Miss, who brought me here?"

A smile blossomed on the nurse's face at his question. "You are very lucky. It was the young master of the Huxley's family, Sebastian, that brought you here. He paid for this VIP ward and has sorted out your hospital bills."

'Huxley's family?'

A small frown appeared on Maverick's face. Isn't that one of the most powerful families in Clearwater city? Even the current head of the family was rumored to have been a mighty general in his younger days.

Though he was old and retired now, his name still carried weight. But despite their power, the Huxley's family had always maintained a relatively low profile.

"You have a good physique. Despite suffering a severe concussion, you are still alive," the nurse was unable to hide her amazement as she checked his medical records.

The documents clearly stated that when Maverick had been brought in, his upper body had been drenched in blood, and his head had taken a fatal blow.

The doctor had even performed a CT scan and concluded that Maverick was suffering from a deadly concussion, with little chance of survival. Yet, contrary to the medical reports, he had woken up.

Maverick heard what the nurse said but acted oblivious. He was also unsure and couldn't give an answer to why he was still alive when he had clearly felt the life drain out of him earlier.

"I'll call the doctor over to see. Don't move. I'll be right back," The nurse closed the documents and walked out of the ward.

A few minutes later, she returned with a doctor. The young man also showed surprise in seeing him awake.

After a quick check-up, he arched his brows, "I thought the injuries were going to take longer to heal but you are perfectly fine. Do you feel pain anywhere else?"

Maverick shook his head sideways to indicate a negative response. The doctor hung his stethoscope around his neck and nodded.

"Since you are fine, you can get discharged whenever you want or choose to remain here for further observation," Then the doctor turned to the nurse, "Handle the procedure."

Without a word, he walked out of the room. Maverick attempted to speak but the nurse beat him to it, "Master Sebastian already informed me to call your family to come and complete your discharge procedures but I haven't been able to reach them. Would you give me the contact information of the person I should call?"

At the mention of the word 'family', Maverick's eyes turned cold and his fingers reached up to the gauze wrapped around his head. That vile woman is no family!

"Uhmm... Would you please contact Master Sebastian for me? I'd like to see him," Maverick subtly changed the topic.

The unsuspecting nurse didn't notice and was happy to inform him that, "Lucky for you, Master Sebastian is still in the hospital. I heard the old man Huxley collapsed again and has also been brought here."

Maverick arched a brow at her words. Is she referring to the old patriarch of the Huxley's family?

"Would you like me to take you there? His ward is the last room on this floor."

"Ah, no... I can manage."
