Well Smith had only one thing to do in mind the moment he realized that the class had been dismissed. Her new mission for the day was to befriend Allen Mar Corton, and ask him all the stuff Well felt like he needed to know. Obviously, like him, Well was a newly migrated student, too. The way he spoke, the way he looked, and even the way he form his ideas out of nothing would tell so much that he was not a native citizen of New Bill. Well needed to figure out where hee came from, why he chose to study here, and why he believed that the New Bill and the citizens living in it were hypocrites and crooked.

When the class was over, Well waited for almost all of his classmates to depart and empty the room so he could have his time to talk to Allen Mar. It was a matter of right timing and perfect execution. He need to think through his words, choose the right questions, and of course, be friendly. He still had no idea what kind of person Allen Mar was. He could be an introvert or an extro

“I got here in New Bill two months ago. I came here all alone, and just like everybody else, I also thought of New Bill as the perfect city which will bring out the best in me– just like what the teacher has promised. Of course, I used to believe that other than the quality education that I will be getting here, I would also get satisfaction of living in a city that has complete opposite set of culture and norms different from what I used to back in my country,” Allen Mar started. He was looking at Well’s eyes all through out the course of his first statement, but then later on he looked away when he was about to reveal something. His eyes narrowed as he shot it across the series of mahogany trees in front of them. “However, everything has changed during the day that I got here.”Well’s eyes grew big. He knew it. It was another similarity again between him and Allen Mar. Something had happened to him on his first day here in New Bill, too, and that was how Allen Mar exactly said it. “

Allen Mar and Well had began to form the kind of friendship that Well had just wanted to have ever since the moment he lost connection with Joross, the first friend he was supposed to made. But after his disappearance, Well knew that he was going to have a hard time replacing him. He thought Daniel was the guy. He thought Daniel was going to replace what Joross had left for Well– a friendship the will last for four years of his stay here in New Bill. But he was wrong. Because the moment he met Daniel but got denied that they were close, was also the moment Well had realized that he befriended a fake person. But how possible would it be knowing that he talked to the same person? The face was the same. The voice was the same. The height was the same. And pretty much every single detail of him was the same. Would there be a chance that it was his doppelganger? Or an identical twin brother? Or it was indeed just the same person who had come to a sudden and last minute conclusion that Well

As soon as the class had started, Well and Allen Mar knew that this was going to be another episode of keeping up with the lunatics. They were sitting together at the back when all of a sudden, in a spur of a moment, just as when the teacher turned around to write something on the white board, the two felt something strange. Though, not really the two of them. It was just Well. He was feeling a little endangered. He was not sure if Allen Mar felt the same or not, but as for him, this had happened to him during the first period and now it was happening again to him. All of his classmates turned at him. They all looked angry. Their eyes were flaming in anger and dismay, and it was not just the kind of look that would definitely shake Well to the core, but it was also the kind of look that would give him the craziest trauma he could possibly have. He consulted Allen Mar about it, all the long while the teacher had still yet turn around and face the entire class she was handling. “Hey,”

Allen Mar moved his head to the direction of Well, which was on his left side. “Obviously, they hate you,” he said plainly. The tone of his voice was dead, and he spoke it in such a robotic way. “They are hating everything of you, everything about you, and everything that you are doing and you will do. They want you gone. Disappear. Or whatever. I don’’t know anything else apart from the mere fact that you should stay away from any of them because even God does not know what are those lunatics capable to do.” Well finished his statement with a heavy sigh. “Just. . . Just smile at them and don’t make it obvious that you are fearing them. Showing that you are intimidated will only progress their motive of doing something– if, by any chance, they are planning so.” Well leaned on the backrest of his chair and pretended that he was paying attention to the writings scribbled on the white board in the front. “But why are they hating me? Why are they going to do something to me, when as far

It was lunchtime when Well and Allen Mar decided to go for a visit downtown because there is where a famous restaurant serving affordable yet delicious foods stood. According to Allen Mar, it seemed like a hideout– hidden away from the public. It was there even before the reform of New Bill had occurred, but still, only a few people were able to hear and visit the place. “I think I should warn you in advance,” Allen Mar said as soon as they set themselves free from the classroom, their bags dangling on their arms and they seemed to not have any plans of wearing them behind their backs. “It is not the kind of a restaurant you would expect. The ambiance is different, the concept of the place is different, the foods they serve are different, and even the people that serve are different.” Allen Mar kicked a bottled water out of the way. “I actually love exploring different foods from different cuisine. I get that. I am not really a picky eater, and thankfully, I do not have any allergi

They successfully arrived at the tavern-like restaurant Allen Mar had been talking about all throughout the course of their stroll on their way out of the West Berg University and off the busy streets of New Bill. Finally, after minutes (or probably half an hour) of venturing past all sorts of people– both the sane and the insane– they indeed finished the journey and ended up on the right track. Well was sweating excessively and it was due to the scorching heat of the noon time sun. On the other hand, it was nothing but just a normal day for Allen Mar because he had already adjusted to the baby weather that always lingered over both the towering skyscrapers and the old-fashioned infrastructures of the city. Just like what Allen Mar had told Well about it, the place was indeed a secret. It had been surrounded by dilapidated houses, dank, empty, and dusty food stalls, and even just the street itself already felt so claustrophobic. Nothing felt more wrong than this place, but because We

They entered at the dank tavern and to their surprise, a man suited in formal attire exited the place. Allen Mar instantly draw his attention to the old man in black and red suit because it was the very first time he had seen a well-groomed and extravagant-looking person going into the place. Usually, or at least according to what he had witnessed and experienced, only the poor and those who were living under the fine line of poverty could go into the place. The simple logic was because, if you are a person who were enjoying the luxury of life, why would you even bother to visit a place that was completely cheap, claustrophobic, unethical, and utterly out of your league? However, upon witnessing such rare situation, Allen Mar instantly new he had to check why was the man there to begin with and what was his motive of bothering to go into the said place. Because sure enough, he knew it was not about the food or the cuisine itself. It was absolutely about something else. Something that

“Tau Gamma Penumbra Secret Society?” Well asked Allen Mar, although yet again it was nothing but just another rhetorical question he had asked to him that needed no answers. True enough, just the name itself already brought shivers to the back of Well’s neck, and they crawled all the way from their up to his spinal column. He did not expect to cross paths with that word. However, he knew since the moment Daniel talked about it to him back when they were still on the bar that he was going to encounter it sooner or later. Secret Societies. That’s exactly how Daniel had said it to him. “West Berg College is not your typical college. Even though it is indeed a top tier in terms of best performing schools, there is no denying that secret societies are forming without the knowledge of the Board of Committee and of the college school itself. It has been existing ever since, but up until now, it is still working and no one has still found out about it,” these were the exact words of Daniel. O

“Nowadays, it is not only tangible things that are stolen. Culprits and stalkers like them are often sent out in the world to steal impossible things like information and codes. I believe that is the thing that keeps them from running after us. Because if it is only a material thing, they could have stolen it long before already. But it’s different. They are needing a piece of information, and only the best of the best spies and culprits can do it. Only those who are willing to risk their lives and last breath only to get their ears closer to the information that their bosses need,” Binsent Anchorman explained. “Okay, okay. Hold on, why are we here again? Because, technically, since I am now an official member of the alliance, am I not right to know the basics of this group? Like, what are we working for? And who? And why? And basically all the questions you think I need the answer from?” Arjay chimed in, standing by the end of the bleacher together with Allen Mar. Even up until this

  • Chapter 157: Their Own Shadows

In the taxi, nothing much had happened other than a small conversation involving Well, Binset Anchorman, and some interesting and trivial things about the late Detective Deib Anchorman, his twin brother. It was surely a wholesome moment. It was surely a wholesome conversation. But if not for the fact that Well was the one that initiated the conversation, none of those would have ever existed. “I only met Detective Deib Anchorman for like a couple of days,” Well started two minutes just when the engine started. “And just like you, he started as a taxicab driver, too. I met him when I asked for a taxi who can send me to the nearest ATM station because I just lost my phone and I needed to buy something. He was the one who accompanied me to the Octagon Shop where I was able to find myself a new phone. He was a good man, indeed. I don’t think if I have said this earlier, but this is something that I was not able to tell him. I was too selfish to even inform him how good of a man he was,” We

Just when Well arrived at the ground floor, he noticed some coalition of people not far from where he was standing. Intrigued by the on going noises, he went to see what was happening over there. After a few more meters of walking, he finally figured out what that mess was all about. Simple. It was primarily because over there was a food hall and the reason why he could hear metals banging against each other was because they were spoons and forks, and noisy people who were trying to satisfy themselves with the food that they eat. Apparently, it triggered the growling of Well’s stomach. All of a sudden, he wanted to dive into the line too to get himself something to feed for his angry tummy. Convinced that there was no time for his social anxieties anymore, he absentmindedly fell in line. He tucked his wallet out of his pants’ left pocket and draw out his credit card. Finally, he could eat now. It took him roughly ten to fifteen minutes to finally make it to the counter. There, he ord

Detective Deib Anchorman was the first to make it close to the manhole. When he got there, he drew his ear closer to the ground floor. “I don’t hear anything,” he said after five seconds of focusing all his hearing senses on the ground. “I am supposed to be hearing footsteps and cranking guns and indistinct chatters coming from the soldiers, but I don’t hear anything right now. “Is that supposed to be a good thing or a bad thing?” Well asked, his heart had been pounding so fast and so strong it was no different compared to a jack hammer used in smacking a hardened soil. Allen Mar chimed into the conversation and then corrected Well, “It is supposed to be a good thing, I believe. The detective not hearing anything from above only means that the soldiers have not returned from the search yet. That means we will have enough time to make it out here and perhaps even out of the vicinity as well. Although the latter would be so dangerous, and I don’t think our chances of success are that
