Chapter 39

“Good morning, sir,” Kate greeted as she stood right in front of her boss in a pitiful ramrod posture as soon as she got inside his office. As she was still at her office before her boss demanded her presence, she prayed so hard for his boss's decision to suit her.

“Morning, Kate. How are you?"

Nancy forced a smile. “I’m fine,” she squeaked.

“Relax yourself; you may have a seat,” Jack said.

Nancy sat down, and Jack noticed she was relaxed a bit. She quickly passed the ledger on the table over to Jack.

Jack realized at a single glance that it was the stolen ledger but decided to neglect it simultaneously.

“I know all these nervous looks on you are that you fear what the outcome of my reply will be.” Kate was baffled that it was that obvious and Jack could read through her. “Well, you are retaining your job, but on a condition.”

A flicker of hope passed through her eyes. “Please let me know whatever it is, I will do it,” she replied desperately.
