The Fortune Engine [I]

"Arthur, where do you think you're going?" Just as Arthur was about to step outside the office, George Holloway, the manager of the project development department, came out and asked angrily.

"Just want to clear my head, Boss." Arthur replied, trying to sooth his forehead with his hand. He had been thinking about the medical bill he received from the hospital where his father was admitted.

"Clear your head? How many times do I have to tell you that this is a critical moment for the company's development?"

"I understand, Boss." Arthur clenched his fists, suppressed his anger, and answered with a fake smile.

"I don't think you do, Arthur. If you do, you won't be slacking off at this time." George said and patted him on the back with a bitter smile. "I know you've been putting in extra work these past few months, but I have higher expectations for you. You can do better than this, Arthur. So, for your own sake, don't let me down."

"Yes, Boss. I won't let you down." Arthur sneered in his heart but managed to give a fake smile. He put his jacket back on the chair, and sat down slowly. He had been working himself to death for this company, all for little money, yet this overbearing manager wanted him to really die.

"Good..." George puffed out his huge beer belly and nodded with satisfaction and called the beautiful female secretary into the office. "Miss Harlow, in my office."

A few minutes later, a burst of laughter could be heard coming from the office.

"Pfft." Arthur sneered fiercely at the closed office door.

"Calm down, Arthur. You know how the man is." Williams Anderson, who was sitting next to Arthur, handed him a calm gum. "Here..."

Arthur thanked him, put the gum in his mouth, and opened the Fortune Engine app while chewing absentmindedly. He didn’t have any other hobbies to calm himself down except playing Fortune Engine since he was a child, and he always hit the simulation targets.

Just after hooking two diamonds, he received a text message.

"Hello, Mr. Arthur. This is the County Hospital. Your father's hospitalization f*e is 24,230 dollar. Please, pay it in time."

Arthur silently removed the gum from his mouth and dropped it inside the bin before drooping his head. He no longer had the interest to play the game or scold his forsaken manager in his heart. He was really out of money, and had no other form of savings. What was he going to do now?

Deep in thought, he raised his head, and was about to close the game when he stopped himself. Why was there a translucent interface in front of him?

Arthur focused his attention on the translucent interface, and saw that the originally translucent screen had become solid, and on it was a Fortune Engine application with a bold caption.

[Welcome To The Fortune Engine: Play For Real-life Rewards!]

Real life rewards? Good marketing strategy but people couldn't be stupid enough to believe it, could they? Arthur pondered.

The application was just like the previous one he was used to playing, but the difference was that the rewards of this Fortune Engine were not gold, diamonds, or explosive bombs, but bank cards, miniature buildings, and model cars.

Yea, right, bank cards! The best it could be was a gift card of one dollar, and you'll probably get it after one thousand tries.

For a while, Arthur observed the speed of the golden hook, dangling above the items, and decided to give it a try.

A few minutes later, he hooked a bank card up.

[Congratulations to the player for receiving a cash reward of 10 million!]

Where's the money? How was he going to claim it? After waiting for a while and seeing no response, he smiled self-deprecatingly and closed the game interface. What was he expecting before, ten million dollar to drop from the sky?

Then suddenly his phone vibrated twice. He looked at the screen and found that it was a text message from the bank.

"Your account has been credited with 10,000,000.00, and your account balance is 10,00,147.00."

Arthur dropped his phone after reading the message. He picked it up and read the text message over and over again. He checked himself to see if he was dead or just hallucinating.

When he was certain he was still alive, he checked the message again before he took a deep breath.

He turned off his phone and ran out of the office with his coat in hand, not forgetting to throw a message to his coworker, Williams. "Hey Will, I need to go. Something urgent came up. I'll see you later."

"What happened, are you okay?"

"Yes, please, tell the boss I'm off." Arthur replied and rushed out of the office.

Arthur ran to the nearest ATM in one breath, panting. He inserted the bank card into the machine, and stared at the screen in anticipation.

After waiting for a few seconds, the ATM showed the balance numbers, ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, tens of thousands... It was actually 10 million!

Immediately, he transferred 100,000 dollar to the hospital without hesitation for his father's subsequent treatment expenses, then took out his bank card excitedly and chuckled intermittently while walking on the road.

He actually had money?!

After turning a corner, Arthur saw a large oriental restaurant with a very bourgeois decoration in front of him. He had heard about this restaurant from his boss before. The food tasted very good, but the price was not cheap. Now he could try it too.

Thinking of this, Arthur pushed the door open and entered the restaurant.

The pretty waitress at the restaurant couldn't help but frown when she saw Arthur wearing cheap clothes. She reminded him with a hint of sarcasm. "Welcone sir, our rate starts from 5,000. Would you like me to book you a seat?"

Five thousand, way more than his monthly salary... Arthur smacked his lips, but when he thought of the 10 million in his bank card, he calmed down again: "Yes, please."

Holding the menu, Arthur started from the beginning and ordered a bunch of food that interested him, wanting to try them all.

But the waiter, holding the menu card, did not leave with hesitation displayed on his face: "Sir, can we collect your card payment first?"

In fact, expensive restaurants require you to consume first and pay later, but Arthur didn't look like someone who could easily spend thousands of dollars on a meal.

Just when Arthur was thinking that the restaurant was indeed different from the others, a mocking voice came from behind him: "Arthur, the waiter thinks you can't afford to pay and is afraid that you will dine for free."

Following the sound of laughter, Arthur saw the person speaking was a woman with heavy makeup on her face, so her features couldn't be seen clearly, but she had a very hot body. She was wearing a low-cut top, and her cleavage was very deep.

There was a middle-aged man sitting next to her. He looked old enough to be her father, but seeing how she rubbed her cleavage against him, he looked more like a godfather than her biological father.

After seeing the woman's face clearly, Arthur's expression froze for a moment.

Julia Harrison, his girlfriend in college.
