He opened the door to the secret room where Elsa was. She was smoking with her eyes closed. He wondered for a moment why she was doing this to herself.

She could escape this place if she wanted but she wasn't attempting to do so. Normally he would have regarded what she is doing as stupid but he was suspecting a fight for power. It made him so curious and frustrated at the same time.
