They reached the Hunters/witches dorm building after several minutes of trekking across the campus. Most of the courses that the Parapsychology students studied were held in some of the academy's amphitheater-like buildings, all of which were located a fair distance from the dorm areas. The walk was annoying for most students especially when they were in a hurry, but at least it served as a good cardio workout for those who couldn't be bothered to visit a gym.
When the two young adults reached the shared common room of the top floor, they were met with the sight of Jade kneeling on the floor at one edge of the room. Most of the furniture and other stuff had been moved to make space for the massive magic circle that had been drawn on the wooden floor with what looked like chalk. The drawer herself was moving around the circle carefully to avoid erasing any portion, while using the chalk-like item in her hand to draw numerous runic symbols within the circle. "Certainly took your sweet time getting here Hanson," Jade muttered in what sounded like annoyance. But Dean knew that was not the case. "How will this work?" He asked, his dark eyes scanning the diagram curiously. Runes had never been his study of interest though that did not mean he found them any less fascinating. "I think she's going to try and figure just exactly what was used as the base of the sealing spell that was cast on you," Lisa replied before Jade could answer. Surprised by her correctness, the dark haired girl opted to remain silent and let the young witch finish. Lisa pointed to a set of symbols in the left part of the outer layer of the magic circle. "Those runes are diagnosis runes. They're commonly used to determine the magical composition of a spell. Every magic user has an elemental alignment. It doesn't matter how weak or strong it is. A mage's elemental affinity will always remain the same, and it will always show itself in every spell the mage uses although it doesn't necessarily have to be prominent enough to be noticed. Those runes will interact with the lingering ether from the spell and use it to decipher the elemental affinity of the witch that cast the seal." Completely oblivious to the strange looks Dean and Jade were giving her and lost in her admiration for runecraft, Lisa continued on her tirade with sparkling eyes and a pleasant smile on her face. "The runes further into the circle are a bit more diverse than the first set. These are [elemental] symbols from the ancient Sumerian civilizations. Although they've been tweaked to function a bit differently now, their primary function is to release a steady stream of elemental magic absorbed from the world's ether." Her finger pointed at two peculiar symbols on both sides of the [elemental] runes. "However with the addition of those two, the whole thing is pretty much turned into the magical equivalent of an antivirus program. Every element is weak against another specific element. By working with the diagnosis runes, the [elemental] runes become primed to send a surge of the opposing elemental magic of the one detected directly into the seal's framework to destabilize and consequently shatter it."The spectacled girl finally stopped to inhale some oxygen that her lungs were probably begging for. Her eyes eyes caught the looks she was receiving from the two Hunters and a deep blush flooded her cheeks crimson. She retreated instinctively and tried to make herself as small and insignificant as she could out of embarrassment.
"Ah... that's uh... I think that's w-what it supposed to do," she stuttered shyly. "I apologize for my thoughtless rambling—" "Stop that," Dean cut her off sharply then his voice mellowed down a bit. "Do not put yourself down after such an impressive display of knowledge." "Emo Hunter's right kid," Jade chuckled her approval. "You were able to almost completely decipher in seconds, a matrix that took me half an hour to create. If that's not amazing, I don't know what is. You're a really bright girl Lisa." Caught entirely off guard by so much praise from the two legendary individuals, Lisa could only nod her thanks. Her embarrassment had mostly disappeared though but she still fidgeted a bit mostly out of habit. Jade just laughed warmly again and patted the girl gently on the shoulder before moving to observe the completed circle for any mistakes or errors. "The truth is, I actually finished this magic circle in about five minutes. It was the barrier runes that took so much time to get right." Lisa perked up again as the conversation turned away from her thankfully and to something of far more interest: runecraft. Her eyes trailed along the circle slowly, stopping only at several instances. "Barrier runes? There were some runes I didn't recognize earlier. Is that what those are?" "Mmhmm," Jade affirmed. "But they look nothing like any barrier runes I've ever seen before." "That's because you couldn't have possibly seen them before," Jade said with a cocky smirk. "After all, I'm the one who created them." The awestruck expression that appeared on Lisa's face did wonders for Jade's already massive ego. If the witch girl was as knowledgeable as she seemed about the intricacies of runecraft, then she must have known just how difficult and complex it would be to create even a single low level room, not to talk of something as high tier as a barrier rune. She waved a hand at the girl lightly and smiled. "I know you probably have like a million questions to ask, but that's gonna have to be later. Right now I wanna get this over with. I have other things to do with my life."Her tone was harsh and her words harsher still, but Dean knew that was just how Jade expressed her care. She clapped her hands and pushed Dean who had been observing the whole thing quietly as he was often wont to do, into the very center of the magic circle. "You get in there and don't you dare smudge my diagram," she warned the slightly taller man. Then she turned to drag the only other person in the room, Lisa all the way to the edge of the room as far away from the circle as possible.
"I created those barrier runes to contain Dean's magic in the event that something goes sideways," Jade explained to the girl. "Of all the Hunters, Dean is regarded as the most dangerous for a reason. Not only is his Magic insanely powerful, but it is also extremely volatile and unpredictable. It doesn't matter who you are. One direct hit from his Magic and that's the end." Her words sent an involuntary chill down Lisa's back but she forced it down and nodded in understanding. She knew what Jade had meant. She was fairly certain that she had spent the most time around the broody Hunter out of all other witches and every single time they had been close enough, she would feel that eerie bone chilling cold that seemed to permeate her very soul the longer she stayed around him. And if she could feel it there was no doubt the Hunter himself knew hence why he was always trying to moderate the time spent together. Lisa frowned unconsciously and crossed her arms. That didn't seem right neither was it fair. Something had to be done about that.Dean watched Lisa's face as it flickered through several emotions into it finally settled on a small frown. It didn't surprise him that she would be unhappy with the way his power worked. Her kind heart was probably feeling bad for him.
He sighed quietly. Someone like her really was too good for someone like him. He would not let her be dragged down by his own problems.Lisa watched as Jade activated the matrix. Unlike other branches of magic, runecraft was the only one that did not necessarily require one to be insanely proficient or skilled to utilize to its full potency. Runes were mysterious magic symbols, each with a meaning of its own that was built upon the foundation of reality. In simpler terms, a rune was basically an already casted spell locked in a diagram or symbol. All that was needed to actualize the effect of a well drawn rune was only a mere trickle of energy, no matter what the source was.
Jade placed a hand on the diamond shaped rune at the outer edge of the magic circle. Her dark eyes flashed purple and the rune glowed with a similar color. The lilac glow soon spread like controlled wildfire throughout the circle, illuminating every line and symbol till the entire floor shone brightly. Dean stiffened slightly when one of the purple rays of light shot into him like a harpoon straight into his torso. Three more corporal light beams repeated the action until a dark smoke began to emanate from the center of his chest. His body had begun to heat up, Dean noticed. But the piercing pain that lanced through his system had him wincing through his poker face. It felt like something was being ripped out of his chest forcefully and it definitely didn't want to leave. Jade observed the whole thing with curiosity in her eyes. "Interesting," she mumbled. "What's interesting?" Lisa asked. "Well it seems I'll have to give credit to our mystery enemy for being such a genius." "Genius? How?" Jade pointed her well manicured finger directly at the diagnosis runes which were pulsing periodically with a deep purple light. "See that? That means that whoever this person was, she had enough knowledge about seals to fix in so many traps layer by layer throughout the seal. Each of the traps have an elemental origin and do you know what that means?" Lisa's eyes widened in realization. "She just have expected us to use this exact spell to attempt to break her seal." "Exactly," Jade said and clicked her tongue in an impressed manner. "And taking into account that she had only touched Dean for all of three seconds and was still able to do all this immediately, and it looks like we're dealing with a master mage here. I'm pushing this person to Elimination Target Class 3." "Class 3? Is that high or low?" Jade shrugged her shoulders beneath the white cotton blouse she wore. "Somewhere in the middle. It doesn't look like she's actively seeking to kill people otherwise I would have given her a much higher designation." Lisa was about to open her mouth to ask another question but was interrupted when a loud grunt came from the Hunter inside the magic circle. Both girls were alarmed to at the pained look on Dean's face. Before they could ask him what was wrong, Jade noticed the erratic fluctuation of the [elemental] runes as well as cracks that had begun to appear on the barrier runes. "Oh shit!" She cursed and moved to stand in front of Lisa who could not understand what was happening. She threw her hands out made a gesture as if she was tightening an imaginary rope. The space around Dean and the magic circle suddenly warped and and twisted in obedience to her will. It was just in time too, as a second later, Dean exploded in a blast of fire, steam and lightning. The blast was contained thankfully within the secluded area Jade had created, but the shockwave of the concentrated explosion shattered the floor of the common room within the circle and left Dean lying on the broken floor. His shirt had been ripped to pieces and his pants had barely fared slightly better. Burns and cuts littered his skin, although his werewolf regenerative factor quickly took care of those. Smoke still wafted up from his body and the destroyed area even after Jade had dropped the containment barrier. Both girls approached the unconscious male and Jade knelt beside him worriedly. Her hand reached down to feel his pulse. It was there, steady and strong under his hot skin. Jade frowned and returned to her feet. Fearing the worst, Lisa was almost too afraid to ask. "I-is he...? "No," Jade answered before she could finish, drawing a sigh of relief from the other girl. "But his body is still warm." Lisa stiffened with shock. "T-then that means..." "Yep," Jade sighed in annoyance. "His magic is still sealed."Related Chapters

"This is not good." "Yeah no kidding." "Oh shut up Lee. This is serious." All five Hunters had gathered in Michael's room. As both their leader and an alpha, it was only right that his living space was the biggest among the team. With Dean lying on the large bed and Olivia sitting beside him, there was still more than enough room for Lee to lean against the door and Jade who was sitting at the study desk. The owner of the room himself was standing, his eyes fixed in a pensive stare as he watched Olivia glide her hands which glowed green with her magic over Dean's body. No one had asked her to do that since there hadn't been any visible wound on the other Hunter's body earlier but her love and worry for her teammate had driven her to his side from the moment she had stepped into the room. Nevertheless, no one made a move to stop her. Because, more than they were a team, the Hunters were a family who relied and cared for each other. And family always took care of family. "Wh
The Hunters Volume Two: War Chapter Twelve: Awakening
The order came like a death sentence, which it essentially was. The startled captain actually stepped back subconsciously at the absoluteness of that statement, as did a good majority of his soldiers. Hugo watched with a growing sense of apprehension as a dark grin spread across the face of the dark haired girl, presumably the one called Jade, as she moved to stand in front of the sandy haired young man. "You guys might want to back up a bit," she warned playfully. It took Hugo a few seconds to realize that she was not talking to them but to her own colleagues and less than one second to understand why. The moment the girl took a step forward, it felt like the air itself had become heavier. An indescribable pressure descended on the entire squad of guards, rooting them to the very spot they stood. It was when Hugo felt the ground beneath him begin to rumble and shake that he knew that this would not be an easy opponent. The unknown girl must have been an highly skilled mage with

His boots carved trenches through the earth as he slid to a stop almost a dozen meters away. Jade smirked at the man's hardened expression. That last attack had carried a fair bit more power than she had been using so far. From where he stood, Hugo sent multiple energy slashes from his sword which she tore apart with her bare hands. However just as she had done that, twelve large white magic circles appeared around her, enclosing her within a circle. Each circle was maintained by two ACDC mages with one forming the framework and the other supplying the energy. "And what is this supposed to do?" Jade asked in her perpetually condescending tone. "Mock while you can, invader," Hugo declared in a booming voice that roused up morale among his men. "You have been a most worthy adversary. Your strength and skill cannot be underestimated. But this is where it ends." He threw his sword high into the air and manipulated it telekinetically to remain suspended in the air directly above J
The Hunters Volume Two: War Chapter Fourteen: The First Game
The night sky was only slightly cloudy, allowing the full moon and the bright stars to light up the inky black canvas above. With such pleasant weather conditions, it was no surprise that the first game of the season had been scheduled to hold tonight. By the twentieth hour of the day, Starlight Central Academy was just about ready to commence its first match against Providence University. The stands were packed with students from both colleges cheering and chanting their respective school mottos. There were of course several minor alterations between a few hotheads but those were quickly settled by selected security supervisors. There was still about a quarter of an hour until the match was to begin so the cheer squads of each team took to the fields to raise school spirits. Inside the main locker room for the home team, the coach of the Starlight Comets drilled the summarizations of the strategies and plays practiced over the past weeks into the heads of the burly boys in blue a

A loud cheer erupted from the stands outside as the referee called a touchdown for the home team, their third in a row. The school cheer squad broke out into a dance to celebrate their team's lead. But that mattered little to two girls up in an empty classroom at the top floor of the Astronomy Department. "Are you sure you're okay?" Veronica asked for the umpteenth time. Mia rolled her eyes and smiled at the vampire. "Like I've said the past god-knows-how many times, I'm fine. Besides when did you start caring so much?" "I don't," she replied sharply before glaring in the direction of the ongoing game. "But I'll take any chance I can get to rip that bastard apart." Ever since she had found Mia in that empty hallway frozen like a statue, Veronica had hounded the girl ceaselessly for the details of her conversation with the platinum blonde Hunter. But the witch had been unusually cagey about the whole thing, often brushing off the questions by teasing Veronica about her 'worr

"Besides," the girl rattled on as they walked side by side down the long hallway that led to the stairs. "Whitney and Elena are gonna be watching the game as well. Well, Elena's the only one who would actually be interested but she would drag Whitney along with her. Whitney doesn't really like those kind of things. She thinks they're a waste of time." "Smart girl," Veronica commented, her nose twitching slightly. Mia huffed indignantly although it was soon followed by a wry smile. "I told Whitney that you two were a lot more alike than I expected. Try as you might to deny it but it's as obvious as—" "Shh," Veronica shushed the other girl sharply, her facial expression doing a complete one-eighty from relaxed and bored with a hint of cynicism to fully alert and alarmed in an instant. "What? What is it?" Mia asked, whipping her head back and forth confusedly. "Be quiet!" Veronica hissed and turned towards the right wall of the hallway along which the classrooms were locate

"Catenae Gehennae!" Mia incanted as soon as her feet touched the ground. In response to her call, flaming chains of magic burst out of the circle above and interwove themselves around the beast. It struggled to free itself and howled loudly as the flames sizzled its skin. Taking advantage of its distraction, Veronica aimed a direct kick to its solar plexus that had it gasping for breath. Then she lifted the hand pinning her down with pure strength and stabbed forward with all her might, intending to blind the creature at least. The sharpened tips of her sabers found their targets and the Rougarou howled in pain once again. In its agony, it flailed around furiously and caught Veronica in one of its backhand swings. It sent her tumbling back but she was quickly able to right herself by stabbing her swords into the ground. "Hey Mia," Veronica called out, licking away the blood that had spilt out of her lips. Chapter Ninety Nine: It Begins...
Rosaline stared at the ground in front of her where a raised mound of earth was all that remained of one of her longest friends. The pain and grief in her heart was far greater than the ones still wracking her body even as she stood in the pouring rain. Unlike other mounds around her, this one did not have a cross atop it, nor did it have a headstone. Rosaline had felt it would definitely not be fitting to put up a cross on Aria's grave considering how the girl had died. And as for a headstone, she had considered it at first, but that idea had eventually been discarded. After all, even if she were to make one, what would she write on it? Aria was the last of her family to die and as far as Rosaline knew, the girl did not have any other relations outside the Order of The New World. Even within the organisation, the only people she had really gotten along with had been Rosaline herself and Ezra. The latter had been in a strange love-hate relationship with Aria, something that Rosali

Chapter Ninety Eight: A Coming Storm Mia could not stop staring at the girl lying oh so innocently on that white hospital bed like she had not just tried to suck away all of Mia's powers like some kind of energy leech. The memory of that terrifying experience was still very fresh and raw in her mind, leaving her very uneasy about getting any closer than six feet to the girl's bed. She just kept pacing back and forth, imagining just what could have done this to the girl before her. But Rin was in no mood for such indecision. "Hey Mia," the ex assassin snapped the mage out of her thoughts sharply. "What the hell just happened right now?" "I... I don't really know..." She answered, her voice less shaky that it had been a few seconds ago but still just as uncertain. "I mean I thought I had recognized her from somewhere but when we first got here, I wasn't able to get a reading so I just thought I had been imagining things... But this..." "Ok you better start making sense or I'm
Chapter Ninety Seven: Looking Deeper
"As you know by now, all of the Hunters possess a specific Variant ability in addition to the powers we already have by virtue of our werewolf nature," Olivia explained. "Michael has his Erasure, Dean has Absolute Death Inducement, Jade has Space and Time Manipulation and Lee had his own particular brand of Blood Magic. As for me, well the closest thing we've been able to find as a suitable name for my ability was the Eternal Soul." "The Eternal Soul?" Mia repeated in surprise. "And if that name was to be believed literally," Rin leveled the girl with a flat look. "Then it means you are essentially immortal?" "That is correct." "But Shin said that he had both gravely injured you and hit you with an unavoidable attack that was meant to inflict death upon any target it hit regardless of—" "Ah ah, that's where you're wrong," Olivia cut in with a knowing grin. "Immortality does not always equal to invulnerability. You can cut me, stab me, shoot me and I'll still bleed just li
Chapter Ninety Six: Backlash
As the morning sun rose above the sky of Starlight Central Academy, the shrill sound of the wind whistling through the rows of ornamental trees planted all over the school was nearly drowned out by the loud singing from the large open field that was situated just off the north of the school. The pitch was mostly devoid of regular students leaving only members of the two most well known extra curricular clubs in the entire academy: the football team and the cheerleading squad. Both were having their practices on the same field, which was fortunately large enough to easily accommodate the two groups without either having to worry about bothering the other. As the cheer squad went through the complex choreography of their routine, a lone figure sitting on the middle row in the bleachers watched them with unconcealed interest. A few of the girls on the squad had noticed the individual's staring and had begun to whisper among themselves. Eventually one of them seemed to have had enoug
Chapter Ninety Five: The Unseen Shadow
Sometimes Loretta wondered if this power she had been born with was a blessing or a curse. The Celestial Eyes had always been something she had taken extreme pride in. With those Eyes, there was practically nothing that was hidden to her. She could see all the truths of the world, the inner workings of the human mind, even the most concealed secrets of most people she came across every day. But for the first time in her life, Loretta felt completely blind and lost on what to do as she stood on the paved walkway along the avenue that led out of the residential part of the campus. There was a slight chill in the air, something that was not uncommon this early in August since that was when fall started bleeding into winter. But though Loretta had worn a comfy looking long sleeved blue parka jacket and was even going as far as to keep cycling her magic through her body at all times, it did not alleviate the cold that was boring into her soul. At least unlike the last time she had
Chapter Ninety Four: Duty
A single flap of his wings had him closing the distance between them immediately, his swords coming up for a double diagonal slash from both sides. Ezra reacted accordingly by blocking both attacks with a brand new pair of blood axes that formed instantaneously from the swirling magic around him. Vincent raised an eyebrow at the appearance of a second arm in the vampire's body, formed from solidified energy to replace the the Exorcist had severed earlier tonight. But even then, the strength of a Celestial being was not something that could be matched by simple Blood Magic. The axes shattered after a few seconds of bearing the weight of the Exorcist's power and Vincent attacked again. Having fully expected this, Ezra did not make any attempt to dodge since doing so would put him in a far more unfavorable position than he already was. Rather he stepped forward and raised his arm, the one that was made of energy and intercepted the stab. The sword pierced right through the arm but t

Vincent dove down sharply in the direction of Rosaline, having deemed her as the biggest threat among all three at the moment. Technically neither of them were a threat in actuality but the Exorcist still felt it it would be better to be safe that sorry later. The Arcane mage dodged out of the way of the dive-bombing angel/human but was immediately forced on the defence by the Exorcist's constant barrage of attacks. Whenever she tried to make space between them to cast one of her more powerful incantations, the man would always choose to close the distance between them with one flap of his wings. The first couple of strikes she had defended against with her stave had already gotten her seriously concerned since she had felt her own weapon crack ominously. A follow up diagonal slash directed her left arm away, leaving her open for another attack which came in the form of a powerful kick that Rosaline was barely able to block using the stave. The force of the blow snapped the st
Chapter Ninety Two: A Futile Struggle
The first time Ariana Carmine had ever seen an Exorcist had been when she was twelve. At that age, she had just barely matured enough to understand that the world was not as black and white as the teachers at her school had made it out to be. There had been duties, obligations and responsibilities that had been the cause of many arguments in her home back then. Every day she came home from school, she would almost never failed to find one new letter joining the stack on the table by the door. Whenever that was the case, her mom and dad would enter a shouting match that was often so bad that she would always flee into the safety of their attic to escape the noises. Eventually her parents found a way to somehow settle some of their outstanding bills. Right from a young age Ariana had always known that her mom and dad were... special in a way most other kids' parents were not. She had liked it back then, liked how she would come back from visiting a friend's house sometimes and get
Chapter Ninety One: Absolute Power
"Is it over?" Ezra asked as he rotated his left arm in a slow circle. "Did that last attack get him?" "I doubt it," Rosaline said, the irises of her eyes gaining an electric blue glow as she pushed arcane energy into them to boost her eyesight. "I saw him just before that last strike hit. His expression was way too relaxed for someone facing the possibility of instant death. He probably had a way to survive that thing." Ezra looked back at the large cloud of smoke and dust that drifted upwards slowly. The vampire chuckled in disbelief. "Well damn. If he really does survive that, then he is one tough son of a bitch." Beside the dark skinned mage, Aria tightened her hold on her daggers impulsively. "... We have to... We need to kill him..." "Someone sounds like they have a personal grudge," Ezra said with a smirk full of mischief. "Care to share with the rest of the class?" Aria turned to glare furiously at him. "It's none of your business—" "Actually it is," Rosaline cut
