The order came like a death sentence, which it essentially was. The startled captain actually stepped back subconsciously at the absoluteness of that statement, as did a good majority of his soldiers. Hugo watched with a growing sense of apprehension as a dark grin spread across the face of the dark haired girl, presumably the one called Jade, as she moved to stand in front of the sandy haired young man.
"You guys might want to back up a bit," she warned playfully. It took Hugo a few seconds to realize that she was not talking to them but to her own colleagues and less than one second to understand why. The moment the girl took a step forward, it felt like the air itself had become heavier. An indescribable pressure descended on the entire squad of guards, rooting them to the very spot they stood. It was when Hugo felt the ground beneath him begin to rumble and shake that he knew that this would not be an easy opponent. The unknown girl must have been an highly skilled mage with an Earth affinity to be able to manipulate the ground to such an extent without the use of a complex magic circle. Deciding that he could no longer stand and watch, Hugo reached into the inner recesses of his person and drew forth his magic and at the same time unsheathing his sword. It manifested as a burst of bluish white light that lightened the ominous pressure on his shoulders and spread all over his body like an layer of translucent energy. The magic traveled up and through his sword and altered its appearance mildly, giving the weapon an immense boost in power and durability. "Get a hold of yourselves!" He yelled at his men, snapping most of them out of their petrified state. "Remember your training! You have been chosen as members of the Defense Corps. You must not fail your brethren!" Michael had to give the guy credit for his charisma if nothing else. As he watched from the translucent barrier of all consuming energy he had raised around himself, Dean and Olivia, one of the soldiers, a female dressed in a different outfit from both the captain and the other soldiers came forward and released her own magic in a show of solidarity. Following their example, the other soldiers began to push their magics through their bodies to dispel the effects of Jade's Subjugatio Existentialis. He hummed in acknowledgement. Even though Jade obviously was not going all out, the fact that they were able to not just withstand this but actually shake it off was quite commendable. But still, that would not be enough to save them. The earth fractured and cracked as Jade's steps drew to a stop and she scanned the squad of combat mages facing her. A small sigh left her lips as her keen ears detected the sound of arcane energy springing into existence all around her. She looked up and sure enough, there were over two dozen magic circles rotating around her. A second later, a cataclysm of magical attacks rained down on her from all directions. Fireballs, ice shards, lightning bolts, earth spikes, even blasts of pure energy poured down at their target, causing an explosion that excavated a good portion of the land in a shower of dust, smoke and debris.
"Is that it?" The woman beside Hugo scoffed arrogantly. As much Hugo would love to say the same thing, he was not as presumptuous as his young lieutenant. "No it's not Lydia. Stay sharp and don't—" The rest of his words were lost in the explosion of energy from the center of the dust cloud. The shockwave from the blast instantly dispersed the cloud of smoke and dust and even tossed a bunch of soldiers into nearby buildings. Having shielded himself with his magically enhanced sword, Hugo stared in shock at the absolutely unharmed girl standing in the middle of a four foot circle of untouched earth completely unfazed despite the massive crater around her. As the force died down, Jade eyed the disheveled squad condescendingly. "Are you guys done?" She asked and expectedly received no answer. She shrugged and cracked her knuckles. "Oh well, doesn't matter anyway. My turn now." And then she vanished.Immediately Hugo turned to yell at his men. "Defensive formation! Now!"
They recovered with admirable speed and moved to obey instantly. A large dome of white energy rose from the ground to enclose the area the ACDC soldiers stood but it was only halfway done when the dark haired girl reappeared behind two of the soldiers, her arms disappearing up to the elbow through their backs. She ripped her hands of their bodies and they collapsed like puppets with their strings cut. Another soldier, distraught over the deaths of his comrades, cried out and drew his sword to slash at her, only for the sword to shatter against an invisible force around the girl. She flicked her finger at him and he was blasted away, missing his entire right arm. A pair of mages summoned up a massive magic circle and conjured up a large serpent of flames that immediately dashed straight to Jade. It opened its jaws to release a torrent of flames upon the girl but a wave of her hand parted the flames around her. Flexing her fingers, she took control of the space around the large flaming snake and compressed it into a football sized sphere of superheated fire which she sent rocketing towards where a group of soldiers were gathered around a ancient looking building. The ball tore through the multiple shielding spells the mages casted, leaving them no other option than to flee. The sphere detonated upon contact in a massive explosion of fiery hot flames that completely destroyed the building. Jade smiled a small smile as she surveyed the beautiful carnage her actions had wrought. This was, in her opinion, the true joy of battle. Not in the power nor the skills and techniques, but rather in the absolutely marvelous destruction that marked a glorious battle. Her hand snapped backwards to grab at the air, or rather around the outline of an invisible sword that had been on its way to behead her. She turned her head slightly and her smile turned malicious. Faster than Lydia could have seen coming, Jade snapped the sword in half and roundhouse kicked the girl nearly six meters away to crash into a stone statute in a nearby courtyard. Her invisibility had been shattered the moment Jade had caught her. Dazed by the force of the crash, she could barely see out of her drooping eyelids as the dark haired stranger began stalking towards her. Her fingers twitched weakly as she sought to summon up any dregs of magic left in her for protection. Jade waved her hand in the lieutenant's direction, causing the ground to shatter under the weight of the forcefully collapsed space that ripped its way towards the downed woman. A flash of movement caught her eye right before her attack was deflected by something with a loud bang. Her dark eyes glinted with interest and curiosity as she saw the burly captain standing protectively over his subordinate. The man's sword had been unsheathed and was held tightly in his right hand. The weapon's blade had a soft blue glow, but that did not disguise the wisps of energy wafting up from the blade, nor did it hide the noticeably powerful aura the sword exuded. 'So he's capable of using an Awakening huh?'The world of magic was far more complex than the contemporary media portrayed it to be. With so many diverse ways of using the mystical arts, it was all but impossible to confidently categorize all the aspects of magic. But there were a few concepts that would remain the same no matter what branch of magic in question, one of which was the concept of Awakening. Every supernatural that possessed the aptitude and requirements to perform magic had the capacity and capability to do so, whether Arcane, Variant or Blood Magic. But only a small percentage was able to undergo an Awakening. Like the title would suggest, an Awakening was a process that a magic user would undergo in order to awaken their true potential to gain immense power, far more than they were initially capable of wielding. Through intensive training and meditation, a mage would be able to gain total control over his magical energy and by cycling it through their bodies at an incredibly rapid rate, they could boost both their physical and magical abilities to their limits.
The captain leveled a mean glare at the dark haired woman who had effortlessly decimated his squad. She was a complete mystery. He had never seen her before, nor had he ever heard of anyone fitting her description. Even her magic was so unknown to him that he had taken her to be a Variant. Whatever her ability was, there was no doubt yay it was exceedingly powerful. But that simply meant he could afford to stop holding back. This woman had invaded the center of his faction and attacked his men. That was an offense for which there could be no forgiveness. His eyes glowed with a piercing blue light and he drew back his sword. "Awakening: Wrath of the Frost Knight."Jade's eyes widened by a fraction and she disappeared in a purple flash right before Hugo's magically empowered sword slammed into the spot she had been standing on a second ago. The earth cratered under the force of the strike but the real threat were the multitude of ice spikes that sprung up from the ground haphazardly. Reappearing a few meters away, Jade stared at the effects of the attack and hummed.
"I gotta admit, that's actually kind of decent," she commended with a light smirk. "Thank you for your praise," Hugo replied, his breaths coming out in visible puffs of cold air. He raised his sword again. "But it will not save you from my blade." Then he vanished again in a burst of speed. "Heh, isn't that just adorable?"The blue frost-encased sword crashed down with all the strength of an Awakened Captain-Class combat mage in his prime... and was stopped dead in its tracks by a single slender hand. Time seemed to stop but only for a second, just long enough for Hugo's eyes to narrow and Jade to wink slyly at the Captain. The next second was consumed in an explosion of ice, dust and earth that shook the nearby buildings. The scattered ACDC guards struggled to seek shelter from the shockwaves from the impact while Michael and his pack mates merely watched from within his barrier.
Even before the cloud of dust could settle, the sounds of a high paced battle could already be heard from within it. As a captain, it was already a given that he would possess great strength, speed and skill. But his Awakening took it all to the next level. His blade struck with blinding speed at presumable weak points but each strike was either parried or dodged almost without much effort by the strange woman. What shocked Hugo even more than her already unbelievable combat prowess, was the fact that the strange invisible energy that she had been using to repel all magical attacks previously was now absent. By accounts the dangerous energy emitted by his blade would have torn an unprotected mage apart yet here she was still perfectly fine despite not augmenting her body with her magic. Was it possible for a human's skin to be so tough? Or was she even human at all? An overhead slash was batted away by a quick backhand, causing the energy stored within the blade to destroy the land on their left in a blast of frost and ice. Hugo pivoted on his right heel to deliver three rapid strikes aimed at his opponent's neck, torso and waist. The girl leapt back to avoid all three attacks and having sensed an opportunity, Hugo immediately cast a silent restraining spell on her in midair. Ice blue chains snaked through the air to wrap around Jade tightly. But before Hugo could make his next move, she shattered the chains by flexing her arms forcefully. He caught sight of her mischievous grin right before her hand closed around the broken ends of the chain and she yanked with so much force that Hugo was lifted clean off the ground and had him sailing through the air and directly into the punch thrown by the girl. He drew up his sword to block the hit and felt his blade bend slightly inwards. 'She's still not using her magic again,' Hugo mused internally even as he sought to right himself in the air as the punch sent him rocketing backwards. 'So this is her raw physical strength?!'His boots carved trenches through the earth as he slid to a stop almost a dozen meters away. Jade smirked at the man's hardened expression. That last attack had carried a fair bit more power than she had been using so far. From where he stood, Hugo sent multiple energy slashes from his sword which she tore apart with her bare hands. However just as she had done that, twelve large white magic circles appeared around her, enclosing her within a circle. Each circle was maintained by two ACDC mages with one forming the framework and the other supplying the energy. "And what is this supposed to do?" Jade asked in her perpetually condescending tone. "Mock while you can, invader," Hugo declared in a booming voice that roused up morale among his men. "You have been a most worthy adversary. Your strength and skill cannot be underestimated. But this is where it ends." He threw his sword high into the air and manipulated it telekinetically to remain suspended in the air directly above J
The night sky was only slightly cloudy, allowing the full moon and the bright stars to light up the inky black canvas above. With such pleasant weather conditions, it was no surprise that the first game of the season had been scheduled to hold tonight. By the twentieth hour of the day, Starlight Central Academy was just about ready to commence its first match against Providence University. The stands were packed with students from both colleges cheering and chanting their respective school mottos. There were of course several minor alterations between a few hotheads but those were quickly settled by selected security supervisors. There was still about a quarter of an hour until the match was to begin so the cheer squads of each team took to the fields to raise school spirits. Inside the main locker room for the home team, the coach of the Starlight Comets drilled the summarizations of the strategies and plays practiced over the past weeks into the heads of the burly boys in blue a
A loud cheer erupted from the stands outside as the referee called a touchdown for the home team, their third in a row. The school cheer squad broke out into a dance to celebrate their team's lead. But that mattered little to two girls up in an empty classroom at the top floor of the Astronomy Department. "Are you sure you're okay?" Veronica asked for the umpteenth time. Mia rolled her eyes and smiled at the vampire. "Like I've said the past god-knows-how many times, I'm fine. Besides when did you start caring so much?" "I don't," she replied sharply before glaring in the direction of the ongoing game. "But I'll take any chance I can get to rip that bastard apart." Ever since she had found Mia in that empty hallway frozen like a statue, Veronica had hounded the girl ceaselessly for the details of her conversation with the platinum blonde Hunter. But the witch had been unusually cagey about the whole thing, often brushing off the questions by teasing Veronica about her 'worr
"Besides," the girl rattled on as they walked side by side down the long hallway that led to the stairs. "Whitney and Elena are gonna be watching the game as well. Well, Elena's the only one who would actually be interested but she would drag Whitney along with her. Whitney doesn't really like those kind of things. She thinks they're a waste of time." "Smart girl," Veronica commented, her nose twitching slightly. Mia huffed indignantly although it was soon followed by a wry smile. "I told Whitney that you two were a lot more alike than I expected. Try as you might to deny it but it's as obvious as—" "Shh," Veronica shushed the other girl sharply, her facial expression doing a complete one-eighty from relaxed and bored with a hint of cynicism to fully alert and alarmed in an instant. "What? What is it?" Mia asked, whipping her head back and forth confusedly. "Be quiet!" Veronica hissed and turned towards the right wall of the hallway along which the classrooms were locate
"Catenae Gehennae!" Mia incanted as soon as her feet touched the ground. In response to her call, flaming chains of magic burst out of the circle above and interwove themselves around the beast. It struggled to free itself and howled loudly as the flames sizzled its skin. Taking advantage of its distraction, Veronica aimed a direct kick to its solar plexus that had it gasping for breath. Then she lifted the hand pinning her down with pure strength and stabbed forward with all her might, intending to blind the creature at least. The sharpened tips of her sabers found their targets and the Rougarou howled in pain once again. In its agony, it flailed around furiously and caught Veronica in one of its backhand swings. It sent her tumbling back but she was quickly able to right herself by stabbing her swords into the ground. "Hey Mia," Veronica called out, licking away the blood that had spilt out of her lips. "Can you burn that thing in one shot?" "I can try," the other girl a
I600 AD, Western China, Was it by design? Or was it just fate dealing him a terrible hand? He had been born to a poor family and had grown up knowing what it meant to have to struggle every day just to survive. His parents were peasants, his family dependent on the ruling king's provisions for the masses. And when war came to the nation, he had been drafted into the army to perform his vassal duties on behalf of his family. Scared and unsure of his next actions, he found himself thrust into a battle of proportions that he could never have fathomed. Eventually, a blade from an unforgiving enemy found its way into his heart. It was in the middle of all the fighting, all the deaths, all the bloodshed, as he lay bleeding and dying on that battlefield that Lee Shen, barely out of his teenage years yet watching as his life slowed to an end, Awakened. It felt like he had just woken up in another person's body. The scent was all around him. It filled his lungs, his nose, the l
Present Day, Starlight Central Academy's Astronomy Department, The swirling blood rose to form a pair of single edged swords that Lee grabbed with both hands and swung them in circles. He leveled a dark smirk at the Rougarou who took a small step back at the sheer amount of blood lust oozing from the white haired man. "Here I come," he warned, raised his foot to take a step, and disappeared. The Rougarou immediately spun in time to block the crimson blade that sought to remove his head. Still in midair, Lee rotated his body to land a skull rattling kick on the side of its head that destabilized the large beast that was over twice his body weight. The second blade sliced down in a movement faster that the monster could block and carved a deep gash along its flank. With a pained growl, the Rougarou attempted to smack the Hunter out of the air. But like an agile feline, the white haired Asian contorted his body to roll over the monster's arms and landed behind it. His hands c
The Arcane Circle was the main governing body that oversaw all matters concerning arcane magic and witchcraft in the mortal realm. The organization was extremely widespread to includea vast majority of all magic users worldwide. It provided for its members a place to commune together, a safe haven to practice and further their mystical arts under the tutelage of other older and far more experienced mages. In return, its members were assigned different positions and tasks that were either aimed at furthering the faction's strength, gathering resources or defending their territory and all that was theirs. Unlike the spells they used, ranks are divided into Classes in the Arcane Circle. The divisions were done based on some military titles. Starting from the lowest, the ranking went from Private-Class, Lieutenant-Class, Captain-Class, Commander-Class, Colonel-Class and the highest class obtainable by any normal mage, the General-Class. Above even that was the Elder-Class but that was
Rosaline stared at the ground in front of her where a raised mound of earth was all that remained of one of her longest friends. The pain and grief in her heart was far greater than the ones still wracking her body even as she stood in the pouring rain. Unlike other mounds around her, this one did not have a cross atop it, nor did it have a headstone. Rosaline had felt it would definitely not be fitting to put up a cross on Aria's grave considering how the girl had died. And as for a headstone, she had considered it at first, but that idea had eventually been discarded. After all, even if she were to make one, what would she write on it? Aria was the last of her family to die and as far as Rosaline knew, the girl did not have any other relations outside the Order of The New World. Even within the organisation, the only people she had really gotten along with had been Rosaline herself and Ezra. The latter had been in a strange love-hate relationship with Aria, something that Rosali
Chapter Ninety Eight: A Coming Storm Mia could not stop staring at the girl lying oh so innocently on that white hospital bed like she had not just tried to suck away all of Mia's powers like some kind of energy leech. The memory of that terrifying experience was still very fresh and raw in her mind, leaving her very uneasy about getting any closer than six feet to the girl's bed. She just kept pacing back and forth, imagining just what could have done this to the girl before her. But Rin was in no mood for such indecision. "Hey Mia," the ex assassin snapped the mage out of her thoughts sharply. "What the hell just happened right now?" "I... I don't really know..." She answered, her voice less shaky that it had been a few seconds ago but still just as uncertain. "I mean I thought I had recognized her from somewhere but when we first got here, I wasn't able to get a reading so I just thought I had been imagining things... But this..." "Ok you better start making sense or I'm
"As you know by now, all of the Hunters possess a specific Variant ability in addition to the powers we already have by virtue of our werewolf nature," Olivia explained. "Michael has his Erasure, Dean has Absolute Death Inducement, Jade has Space and Time Manipulation and Lee had his own particular brand of Blood Magic. As for me, well the closest thing we've been able to find as a suitable name for my ability was the Eternal Soul." "The Eternal Soul?" Mia repeated in surprise. "And if that name was to be believed literally," Rin leveled the girl with a flat look. "Then it means you are essentially immortal?" "That is correct." "But Shin said that he had both gravely injured you and hit you with an unavoidable attack that was meant to inflict death upon any target it hit regardless of—" "Ah ah, that's where you're wrong," Olivia cut in with a knowing grin. "Immortality does not always equal to invulnerability. You can cut me, stab me, shoot me and I'll still bleed just li
As the morning sun rose above the sky of Starlight Central Academy, the shrill sound of the wind whistling through the rows of ornamental trees planted all over the school was nearly drowned out by the loud singing from the large open field that was situated just off the north of the school. The pitch was mostly devoid of regular students leaving only members of the two most well known extra curricular clubs in the entire academy: the football team and the cheerleading squad. Both were having their practices on the same field, which was fortunately large enough to easily accommodate the two groups without either having to worry about bothering the other. As the cheer squad went through the complex choreography of their routine, a lone figure sitting on the middle row in the bleachers watched them with unconcealed interest. A few of the girls on the squad had noticed the individual's staring and had begun to whisper among themselves. Eventually one of them seemed to have had enoug
Sometimes Loretta wondered if this power she had been born with was a blessing or a curse. The Celestial Eyes had always been something she had taken extreme pride in. With those Eyes, there was practically nothing that was hidden to her. She could see all the truths of the world, the inner workings of the human mind, even the most concealed secrets of most people she came across every day. But for the first time in her life, Loretta felt completely blind and lost on what to do as she stood on the paved walkway along the avenue that led out of the residential part of the campus. There was a slight chill in the air, something that was not uncommon this early in August since that was when fall started bleeding into winter. But though Loretta had worn a comfy looking long sleeved blue parka jacket and was even going as far as to keep cycling her magic through her body at all times, it did not alleviate the cold that was boring into her soul. At least unlike the last time she had
A single flap of his wings had him closing the distance between them immediately, his swords coming up for a double diagonal slash from both sides. Ezra reacted accordingly by blocking both attacks with a brand new pair of blood axes that formed instantaneously from the swirling magic around him. Vincent raised an eyebrow at the appearance of a second arm in the vampire's body, formed from solidified energy to replace the the Exorcist had severed earlier tonight. But even then, the strength of a Celestial being was not something that could be matched by simple Blood Magic. The axes shattered after a few seconds of bearing the weight of the Exorcist's power and Vincent attacked again. Having fully expected this, Ezra did not make any attempt to dodge since doing so would put him in a far more unfavorable position than he already was. Rather he stepped forward and raised his arm, the one that was made of energy and intercepted the stab. The sword pierced right through the arm but t
Vincent dove down sharply in the direction of Rosaline, having deemed her as the biggest threat among all three at the moment. Technically neither of them were a threat in actuality but the Exorcist still felt it it would be better to be safe that sorry later. The Arcane mage dodged out of the way of the dive-bombing angel/human but was immediately forced on the defence by the Exorcist's constant barrage of attacks. Whenever she tried to make space between them to cast one of her more powerful incantations, the man would always choose to close the distance between them with one flap of his wings. The first couple of strikes she had defended against with her stave had already gotten her seriously concerned since she had felt her own weapon crack ominously. A follow up diagonal slash directed her left arm away, leaving her open for another attack which came in the form of a powerful kick that Rosaline was barely able to block using the stave. The force of the blow snapped the st
The first time Ariana Carmine had ever seen an Exorcist had been when she was twelve. At that age, she had just barely matured enough to understand that the world was not as black and white as the teachers at her school had made it out to be. There had been duties, obligations and responsibilities that had been the cause of many arguments in her home back then. Every day she came home from school, she would almost never failed to find one new letter joining the stack on the table by the door. Whenever that was the case, her mom and dad would enter a shouting match that was often so bad that she would always flee into the safety of their attic to escape the noises. Eventually her parents found a way to somehow settle some of their outstanding bills. Right from a young age Ariana had always known that her mom and dad were... special in a way most other kids' parents were not. She had liked it back then, liked how she would come back from visiting a friend's house sometimes and get
"Is it over?" Ezra asked as he rotated his left arm in a slow circle. "Did that last attack get him?" "I doubt it," Rosaline said, the irises of her eyes gaining an electric blue glow as she pushed arcane energy into them to boost her eyesight. "I saw him just before that last strike hit. His expression was way too relaxed for someone facing the possibility of instant death. He probably had a way to survive that thing." Ezra looked back at the large cloud of smoke and dust that drifted upwards slowly. The vampire chuckled in disbelief. "Well damn. If he really does survive that, then he is one tough son of a bitch." Beside the dark skinned mage, Aria tightened her hold on her daggers impulsively. "... We have to... We need to kill him..." "Someone sounds like they have a personal grudge," Ezra said with a smirk full of mischief. "Care to share with the rest of the class?" Aria turned to glare furiously at him. "It's none of your business—" "Actually it is," Rosaline cut
