Chapter 4

CHAPTER 4

I ran as fast as my bike could carry us, I could hear distant siren blaring, the gunshots had seized and I had gotten to my apartment and none of us had been harmed thankfully.

The lady stranger seemed too weak to move, so I carried her on my back till I got to my room. I quickly gathered my first aid box to see what I could do about her injuries.

"Give me your hand." She stretched her hand forward, with her head bent almost like she didn't want me to see her face. I looked at it and against the serious blood stain I had seen earlier, it was just a slight wound. I pushed her head backward to see if all that blood came from her face but it wasn't so bad to cause a worry just slight bruises.

"What's the matter?" She asked, her face settling with questions.

"You don't seem badly hurt."

"Oh...." She looked down on herself as if trying to scan her body for more wound, but when she saw my expression she quickly understood what I meant. "The blood stains? I stabbed one of the men." I gasped upon hearing her reply. " They shot at my glass so I grabbed a piece I could find to stab the first guy that got close to me." She continued seeing how alarmed I had gotten from her previous response.

I sighed and went ahead to clean up her wounds.

"You're good now." She looked at me with an expression of gratitude rather than saying it out. She was obviously wealthy but I didn't expect her to be too proud to thank a poor man like me.

"You never learnt how to say thank you from where you come from?" I said standing up to my feet.

" I'll repay you." She spoke just immediately. Lines of frown settled on my forehead listening to her. Was it that difficult for rich folks to say?

I leaned down to her, pressing my arms at the sides of the bed, creating a wall on both sides of her. " Then make it a big reward. I saved your life." She had initially tried to pull away from my proximity but relaxed back once my words fell out.

"I think I'm hungry. Do you have something decent I can eat?" I stopped in my tracks tilting my head to the side. " Please...." She finally let out. I walked into the kitchen and prepared a meal I considered decent for her. At least I was a good cook. Even though she had that disgusted look on her face, she readjusted once she had a taste of it.

"What's your name? I asked. She dropped her spoon and looked at me as if she had not expected the question.

"Why do you want to know?"

"I saved your life... I deserve to..."

"Louisa_"

She paused as if regretting instantly. " Are you trying to lie about your name now?" I was getting suspicious. She ignored my question and continued eating in silence. It was weird, she wouldn't tell me anything especially not about herself. I switched on the television to have some sound in the room. The moment I switched on to the news, she quickly grabbed the remote switching off the TV entirely.

" I don't like the news, it's full of bad news." she explained before I could ask about it. I was wordless but I could sense she wasn't being honest with me. "Can I use your phone? I lost mine." I handed my cell phone to her without saying a word and watched her as she walked out of the room to make a call. She returned shortly and my suspicion increased. Why was she being so secretive?

The next day, Loiusa had asked me to take her somewhere and I obliged sheepishly. We arrived at the venue but it wasn't a strange environment to me. It was the place where she had been attacked the previous night. We walked into the corner of the road and I was taken aback by the unexpected sight before me.

Lots of men on suits hovered around the scene, I could see the gun stuffed in one of the men's side when he fliped his suit to the side, to rest his hands on his waist. They all had guns, I could tell. One of the men with a short curly black hair stood right in the middle, he seemed to be their leader and he was talking to two police men. Their combo had ended and an envelope was given to the policemen who bowed slightly before leaving.

I looked at Louisa hoping for explanations but she avoided my gaze and continued walking towards her battered vehicle. I hesitated and followed behind her but stopped once I noticed everyone was staring at us.

"Louisa." The curly haired man called, rushing towards her. He looked across to me with a questioning gaze and turned to Loiusa who had forgotten my existence behind her. "Dad has been terribly worried about you." He said even though his expression didn't seem genuine.

"I'm fine now can we go?" She replied rather rudely to him. He sighed and trailed his gaze to me once more but this time his expression bore anger in it. Was I wrong to save her? Weren't they siblings? He had mentioned dad.

"Who is he?" He asked referring to me. I caught Louisa looking up to the guy in disgust before she finally landed her eyes on me.

"He is a nobody."

My heart sank at her words, she had referred to me as a nobody. Still something wasn't right. I wanted to be angry at her but restrained myself. Her brother didn't appear to believe her but he nodded anyway, leading her away from sight.

I turned to leave on my bike but turned back just immediately. I had seen a familiar face stepping away from the crowd moving through the back. My tension hiked even more realizing he was one of the guys I had seen at the bar. Yes! He looked like the leader in the table. He had smirked at me when our eyes locked and it sent cold shivers on my spine. He definitely marked my face.

I spent the rest of my day at the bar and drank miserably. Hailey had forced me home before I turned into a corpse at the bar. I had a strong head for alcohol but it kind of blurred my vision a little as I rode home. Finally I made it to my apartment but then, I found my door opened. My eyes seemed to have cleared all of a sudden as I saw my apartment completely ransacked. I rushed in to see what had been destroyed but the door closed right behind me and a group of men came out suddenly from every corner they had hidden. One man sat on a chair by the side, lighted his cigratte and started smoking. He was the same gangster I saw earlier today with Loiusa's brother. Two men came behind me

"Who are?" I asked fear gripping my whole being. He stood up and walked towards me.

"Learn to mind your own business the next time." He said, a gun pointing at me. My head shook frivolently as I wondered if he was really going to pull the trigger.

Before I could provide an answer to that, his gun clocked and then came the sound of gunshot and excruciating pain. It was in-between seconds before my last breath. He had just shot me to death.
