Astron City - the next day
Sun rose from behind the hills. Its rays peeked through, slightly embracing the beautifully designed neighborhood, River Creek. Birds chirped, as they were heard every morning, bouncing from beautifully spaced ornamental trees emphasizing the concrete road webbing through the subdivision.
Almost overlooking the expanse of Astron City, making this property a little bit above the medium-end classification. As the sun was at its peak, the ornamental trees provided shade on roads to maintain coolness if people opt to evade the slightly harmful sun rays.
At this time of day, River Creek was almost a bunch of empty houses as the majority of the tenants went to Astron City, burying themselves to work just to compensate for the lifestyle that they have chosen. But not Lance, he stayed in the house during the daytime to sober up for the next drinking session. Most often than not, he went out during nighttime - a scapegoat to his liking, evading the never-ending sermons of an unhappy wife.
But not today. Today was different.
All day long, Lance was doing his daily routine of watching the news and sitting down lazily on their couch. Even so, his mind never ceased to escape the night with the unknown lady at the bar. He gulped two Advils to restrain his hangover and would permit himself to think straight.
The military-grade watch alarms silently as it was 1700H. Two hours before the meeting. He was also doubtful about the letter he received. Trained for anticipation, he always considered that the invitation was a trap orchestrated by rebel groups for revenge. Maybe this was in connection with Mission Red Sparrow. Or could be a diversion to kidnap his wife.
Fortunately, his wife was out of town as she was scheduled to drive to Barnsford, her hometown, to celebrate her mother's birthday. Barnsford, located on the outskirts of Astron City, was less populated than the cows they raised.
Even so, Barnsford had state-of-the-art farming equipment that could efficiently support the needs of a farmer, especially tilling numerous acres of land. Most of the farmers used digitized farming equipment from Tractors, mowers, and harvesters just to expedite farming processes.
'Lucky.' Lance thought.
He glanced at the letter a few more times to look for additional clues. He mentally prepared himself for what could happen and simulated various scenarios in his mind.
He sat in a comfortable chair in his basement, closed his eyes, and remain motionless for half an hour. A meditation for every mission cleared his mind and revitalize his long-gone focus.
'You need to sober up, Lance!' He convinced himself during his meditation.
He immediately grabbed the black bag and checked his pistol, his hunting knife, his sniper scope, and his bulletproof vest. He holstered his gun at the back of his pants. He wore his vest underneath his white shirt and tucked his knife strapped in his waist.
'Old school toys. They will work.' Lance thought.
These were classic weapons they used years before in service. But after the inventions of electric and digitized weapons, they had a significant advantage against the rebels. Nonetheless, Lance was also adept with the classics.
He was trained for uncertainty and he even survived the hardest of battles he encountered for 7 years of his military service. He went to the garage and decided to ride his bike, and not his car, in case of high-speed pursuits.
He planned to arrive at the meeting place an hour earlier to conduct parameter reconnaissance.
He drove passing through the heart of Astron City. As he passed through high-rise buildings, numerous large LED advertisements, and city street lights, bright enough that there were no dark corners around the city's epicenter. Hope coursed through his veins.
A city worth fighting for.
Food stalls on the side of streets and high-class Restaurants situated on the ground floors of these large establishments, and numerous happy people celebrating life like there was no tomorrow, seemed to delight the scenery as he drove by. Lance felt alive and happy to have survived his 3 tours in various rebel countries and witnessed the fancies of this fine City.
But never did it leave the memories during the Rebel siege as the heart of the City was painted with blood and rubbled structures.
City lights began to fade. He had to turn towards the underground pass to take a shortcut to the port area. The underground pass had a few lights and the inside of the tunnel was poorly lit, with numerous yellow lights and reflectorized traffic signs to avoid accidents. As he began to reach the end of the tunnel, his feeling of happiness faded and a sudden chill to his bones grasp his entire body.
'This is not fear, this is excitement. This is what I am built for.' He convinced himself.
As he reached the port area, he parked his bike 500 meters away from the warehouse. He checked the perimeter of the warehouse and even the roof, and he found nothing suspicious. There were no signs of traps, or other operatives ready for an ambush. He found a port tower 300 meters away from the warehouse.
"Perfect, vantage point." He told himself.
He positioned himself on top of it waiting for the meeting time. He pulled his sniper scope, without the sniper, and used it to survey the area for any movement. He stayed there until 1900 H.
Later, a black government Range Rover parked in front of the warehouse door. Two human figures disembarked the said vehicle.
"Smells like government," He whispered.
The two were wearing black formal clothes, one was a woman with her high heels and tucked black shirt and the other was a tall, heavy-built man wearing a black suit. The woman was holding an attache case in her right hand.
'It could be a weapon.' Lance thought.
Both went inside the warehouse. Lance glanced at his watch and noticed the time, exactly 1900 H. Then he thought.
He went down the tower and sprinted to the warehouse. Gripping his handgun, He was still cautious and ready for action.
'This is a trap. This is a trap.' He expected the worst.
He convinced himself that he was prepared. He did not go directly inside the open door but instead, he leaned against the wall beside it and cautiously peeked inside.
All he saw were stacked containers, and empty spaces and all else was darkness and quietness. Behind the stacked wooden large crates, one ceiling light was turned on but behind it was concealed, only he could imagine - the two government tools.
'This is it. I am coming in. Remember your training, Lance.' He forced the thought.
His heart pounding and adrenalin rushed through his veins. He went inside with his gun pointing outwards aiming at possible ambush points, weaving through the stacked containers like a maze. His forehead was soaked with perspiration.
'C'mon, Lance. If this is a trap, you should know by now. Slowly now. Watch your every move.' He tried to train himself back as an efficient military operative before.
He had gentle strides and went in quietly towards the lighted area. As he went over the side of the stacked containers, he saw an empty chair and an empty table, and behind the table was the tall guy in a black suit, just standing there still without saying a word.
"Who are you?" Lance stopped while pointing his gun at him and shouted to the man. Suddenly, he felt a cold, round metal that kissed his nape. It clicked.
The sudden sensation rushed inwards to his skull as he felt the weight of the circular metal pressed against it at the back of his skull. It was like a kiss of death. Lance stood motionless and realized that it was a gun. He was caught off guard.
'F*ck. How did I miss this?' Lance cursed in his thoughts. 'I am dead. You are dead, you loser. You are a hopeless piece of sh*t!'
"Drop your gun. Put your hands in the air." The woman said with authority and had military experience evident in her voice. Lance threw his gun on the floor and raised his hands gently.
"Is this a trap?" Lance said without turning his back, maintaining his nonchalance.
"No, Lieutenant. This is an invitation." The woman replied.
Warehouse 12, Astron City *** The tall man behind the table finally spoke. "Lieutenant Lance Davis. Welcome. Please sit down." Lance felt sudden ease. He sighed and exhaled deeply. His heart pounding decreased. More than a familiar face, a hero, celebrated by many, a memorable monument made for his unequaled level of service to the country, but to some extent, he was not sure if it was good or not. On the other hand, he was the black operatives Department Head. Maybe he needed somebody to do his assassination missions, off-the-books from government authorities. Nonetheless, he was calm now. If he was targeted then he was already dead years before. "I know who you are. You are Commander James Johnson." Lance turned around and saw Kate, the woman he acquainted with last night at the bar. At that moment, Lance knew that the letter was legitimate for the reason that Kate was under Commander James Johnson. He sensed no hostility from Kate nor from the Commander. Kate lowered her gu
River Creek, Astron City, UAC *** Angela parked her SUV in their garage. She was back from her hometown at Barnsford. It was a long drive and took her 5 hours to Astron City. As she disembarked, she sighed heavily bearing the ungrateful feeling of unhappy married life. The feeling was loathsome, the thought of having a nice home but a failing marriage, it was as if it became normal. Angela did not even have a solid definition of a happy marriage. She was not only unhappy but she was also hurting most of the time. Their home was situated in a quiet neighborhood. Living inside their house provided an immense discomforting quietness that always drove her to cry. Their house was expensive for an average couple. When they were canvassing for a house, Lance wanted to impress her wife when he was still active on duty. Thus pushing him to buy an ostentatious house up above the hill overlooking the beauty of Astron City. It was perfect to live a quiet and private life beyond the loudness o
River Creek, Astron City Angela woke up the next morning from a very deep sleep. She stretched her arms wide, her breast widen, and straighten her back. She realized that their room was so messy. As her memory recuperates, her mind sent flashes of her and Lance indulging intimately with each other last night. She looked around the bed and realized that she was alone, with only crumpled bed sheets, pillows on the floor, and their clothes lying on the floor. This scenery made her smile. Not just a faint smile, but a meaningful one. No need for words to support her feeling. The intimacy they shared was worth a million words that rekindled their marriage a hundredfold. She missed him, she needed to cuddle more to relive their last night's experience. Her heart pounds fast and every beat demands to see her lover. Butterflies in her stomach defined her emotions. She went down to their kitchen and found 4 pancakes, 6 sunny-side-up fried eggs, and a plate of fried bacon served on their din
Route 55, Brensby, Bower City *** A fat and bald police officer, in his early forties, sat down on his chair with her both feet placed on top of his desk. He was eating peanuts and waiting for something to happen. Suddenly and unexpectedly, his landline phone rang loudly. The police officer stretched his right hand while staying in a slouched position. "Brower Police Station, this is Officer Jones." The police officer lazily answered as he always anticipated a prank call. "Officer, there is a car accident. The car collided with a lamp post and it is burning.. here in route 55." The anonymous male voice spoke at the other end of the phone. Officer Jones jerked and took his feet off the table and sat rigidly while hearing the voice over the phone. "Hello, hello, hello, who is this?" Jones exclaimed. The conversation was suddenly cut-off. "This is Roy. I am riding on Route 55 towards Astron. I just passed by a burning car right on the curb. Hurry up, maybe someone got hurt." It ans
Castle Rise Hotel, Bower City, UAC *** Bower City was known for its glorious Casinos, vast strip clubs, and luxurious hotels. Although the City was smaller than Astron, high-ranking officials, tycoons, and high-class citizens were frequently seen in the former to escape from work, destress, or find class hookers. It was declared the second Capital City of the United Alliance Confederation. It provided a large contribution to the UAC's economy due to its glamour and an indulgence of vice, inviting tourists from around the Globe. More foreign money came into this city than Astron. Bower City also held the second-strongest military stronghold. This city served as contingent for Astron if ever crisis overwhelmed the latter again. UAC officials made sure that these contingencies shall be solidified and sometimes enacted to truly augment the true strength of the Confederation. Even secret bunkers were also constructed within the City's territory to house VIPs if ever a second war would t
Base Camp, Mt. Elberus Captain Luke was lazily lying down on his cot facing up the ceiling. Mission Blacksweep never left his thoughts. It was not that his comrades have disappeared that troubled his mind but the moment he opened his eyes after he was unconscious. During the debriefing was all an act. An act to retaliate against any attempt from the Commander to exploit interrogative scrutiny. He remembered every detail of it after his unconsciousness on the night of their ambush. *** He found himself sitting on the tree where he hit his head. He opened his eyes and felt excruciating pain at his nape. Startled, he saw a tall and slim woman standing safely away from him. He quickly recovered from his dizziness and attempted to find his weapons but only found out that his holsters were empty. Even his helmet and his hand grenade were not on him anymore. He realized that there was nothing left to do but confront what was in front of him. He gathered all his might to muster strength w
Blackwolf Base camp, Mt. Elberus *** Agent Kate Brown, Lieutenant Lance Davis, and Commander James Johnson rode a Government-issued black Helicopter from Astron City to the secret base camp of Mt. Elberus. Lt. Davis looked downwards through a circular window of the helicopter's door watching the base's top view. Lance felt melancholic at the moment. He had a lot of feelings rushing inside his thoughts, but what stood out the most, apart from his memories of Angela, was the feeling of excitement to be in service again for the country. To be a hero again. The base camp had a small airstrip, 2 helicopters lined near the heliport, and 3 predators parked at the start of the strip. There were 3 large bunkers formed like domes and painted with brown camouflage all over them. These bunkers were made of 30-inch steel designed to withstand missile or even nuclear blasts. The Facility was fenced with electrified barbed wires on top of the solid concrete 100-meter-high square fence. There we
Blackwolf Base camp, Mt. Elberus Captain Luke gave a tight brotherly hug to Lance and tapped both each other's backs. Both considered themselves brothers; they did several missions together when they were assigned to the heart of a rebel nation. “I just can’t believe that you are here, alive and well,” Lance said with subtle happiness in his voice. “Me too, brother. I can’t believe you joined the cause and left your perfect life outside the service,” Luke responded. They released each other's hug. “It is far from perfect, yah know. Just missed the bullets. I guess.” Lance said. “Well, you are in the right place, Lance.” Luke tapped Lance’s shoulder. They have a solid carrier together and their team was known by high-ranking officials. They were assigned to special operations, rebel camps infiltration, and all was successful. Until the Captain had issues with his immediate superior. It was a discourtesy of conduct as he confronted his superior doubting the mission details. Then,
