Extravagant decorations beautified the Graham family mansion with crystal chandeliers illuminating its features and giving it that warm and classy look.
The wedding anniversary of Eric and Claire Graham, the parents of Melissa Graham was today and the family had gone all out to throw a party for them, inviting guests from only the top echelon of the city.
Tonight was the party and they were the center of attraction seated on the sizable stage that had been mounted in the living room.
There was a ton of dancing and eating and then it was time to gift the couple, so all the family members gathered around them.
"Mom, I see the way you watch the game of tennis keenly. I couldn't find a better gift for you except this crystal tennis bracelet worth $50,000, and it is one out of only 5 in the world." Melissa said with a look of endearment as she handed her the gift.
"..and dad, because of your love for playing dart games, I bought you this dart made of solid gold worth $70,000." Eric grinned widely as Melissa placed the gift box in his hands"
"I can't believe you got the party started without me", Henry surprised everyone with his presence as he had informed them that he wouldn't be able to make it to the party.
Delighted, everybody moved to welcome him and he announced, "I got Dad and Mom, two customized Mercedes Maybach Exelero worth $18 million because they've done priceless things for me and I owe my success all to them".
The guests gasped in shock and applauded Henry for going all out for his parents.
Everyone including strangers brought expensive gifts to impress the high-class couple, so they could fall in their good graces. The couple smiled from ear to ear at the expensive gifts they were receiving.
It was the turn of Ethan, Melissa's husband to give them a gift and their smiles faded quickly. Before Ethan could speak, Claire asked, "What could this pauper possibly afford as a worthy gift for us?"
Everyone burst into a fit of laughter at her mockery but Ethan didn't budge. He was used to this type of treatment from his in-laws so he proceeded to present his gift.
"I got a heart-shaped necklace for the couple to signify their love, long-lasting togetherness, and understanding. Dad can have one piece and mom can have the other, to signify that they complete each other"
After his speech, the whole aura went silent, and you could even hear a pin drop before everybody burst into hysteria.
"How long did you have to penny-pinch from your nonexistent job before you could afford this piece of trash?" Eric questioned mockingly while some guests were still trying to stifle their laughter.
"How dare you show up here to spoil our day or belittle us in front of our guests? It would've been better if you assisted the waiters in serving the guests as that's where you belong", Claire stood up, yelling and pointing at Ethan.
"Melissa, get this worthless piece of trash out of here. He can't even take care of his responsibilities as a man and husband, how would he afford to give decent gifts", Henry added smugly.
Melissa moved to give a befitting reply to her elder brother, Henry but Ethan held her back. He didn't want to be the cause of a fight between brother and sister.
Soon enough, the guests started murmuring,
"Look at how he's dressed for an auspicious ceremony like this one. If it was my celebration, I would've ordered the security not to allow such a person to cross my threshold"
"I hear Melissa is the breadwinner in their little family. She even buys him his underwear and clothes"
"Such a useless man. I can never allow my daughter to associate with a peasant like him"
"Melissa deserves a better man, she should divorce him and start her life afresh".
Ethan and Melissa had been dating for two years before they got married. Their marriage was blessed by Melissa's grandfather who passed on a year after their wedding.
The Graham family has since encouraged Melissa to get a divorce from him so she could marry a man who can take care of her and is worthy of being called their son-in-law, but she has been adamant and insists on staying with Ethan.
Just then, Jason Miller comes into the party and Eric and Claire's eyes light up as they welcome him heartily.
Jason Miller hands them a key and declares "To my future in-laws, I just purchased a vacation home worth $20 million at the upper hills of Beryl City"
Eric turned to Ethan and said, "That, Ethan, is how you surprise your in-laws"
Jason smirked at Ethan and went over to Melissa to exchange pleasantries but she walked out on him showing no interest in whatever he was proposing.
Ethan's eyes were red, his fists were clenched until his knuckles turned white. He wanted to break Jason's arms and legs so he wouldn't have the nerve to belittle him in front of his in-laws ever again.
But deep down, Ethan knew they were right. Melissa deserved all the love and the finest things in life but he couldn't even afford to buy her a proper ring.
He had been a pauper for as long as he could remember. His foster parents couldn't afford his college education so he went on to bag a scholarship just to complete his education. It got worse when his foster parents died in an accident a year before they could see him finish college. He believed Melissa was his only companion left in the world so he cherished and loved her so much.
Suddenly, Eric spoke up, "I'm getting bored and need some entertainment. I'd love to try out my new dart on a board, it's been long I played so my skills might be rusty"
The waiters brought in a board upon hearing Eric's announcement and he tried hitting the bull's-eye with his new dart and he did so effortlessly.
The guests and family members clapped and cheered him on, then he decided to make the game more interesting, "I need a volunteer to place an apple on his head and stand in front of the board".
David, Melissa's cousin, suggested loudly, "Ethan can do it. After all, he gave the least impressive gift and almost spoiled the celebration, this is the least he could do to lighten your mood"
"You're right. Ethan, come over here and stand in front of the board. Place the apple on your head while you're at it", Eric commanded sternly.
Ethan's eyes almost fell out of its sockets in shock but he also needed to impress his father-in-law by being bold so he did it regardless of how fast his heart was beating.
As he was about to close his eyes to say his silent prayers hoping that this wasn't his last day on earth, he caught a glimpse of Melissa running upstairs with tears in her eyes and he hated seeing her cry but he needed to do this.
Eric successfully threw the dart hitting the apple above Ethan's head and Ethan thanked his stars that Eric didn't miss his target.
While the guests laughed at Ethan and applauded Eric, Ethan ran upstairs to check on Melissa.
Ethan pushed the door slightly and he could hear Melissa's sobs coming from inside the room.He walked into the room to where Melissa was sitting and tried wiping her tears off but she flinched. He tried again and she said, "Why did you let everyone taunt you like that?" "Why didn't you allow me to put them in their place?""How dare they speak to you like that in my presence and who does Jason think he is?"Melissa babbled amidst tears and Ethan sat beside her."I couldn't allow you to get in trouble with your parents on their special day. I don't want to be the reason for a squabble among you, that's why I stopped you from defending me", Ethan said as she leaned into his chest.Melissa suddenly shifted from him and started checking his body frantically for injuries or any trauma as she remembered that Ethan had been forced to stand in front of the dartboard."Are you okay?"She questioned as she creased her brows in worry."I'm perfectly fine. Dad is good at darts, hopefully, we'll g
AT THE GRAHAM'S MANSIONEric Graham watched as Ethan drove out through the gate before he reached for his safe and brought out his burner phone making an anonymous call. The only thing being said was, “Do it now” and he disconnected the call. Turning in his chair with a cynical smirk, he reached for the drawer where he kept the contract signed by Ethan. He dropped the contract and removed the carbon paper that covered the actual document he needed Ethan's signature for, divorce papers. He packaged the divorce papers with Ethan's signature in a big brown envelope and used Ethan's phone to send a text message to Melissa that read, “Mel, I'm sorry it has to happen this way. I couldn't bear to see you crying, that's why I have to do it this way. We've been together for 5 years, married for three, and in all these years, I've always felt like I'm pulling you back and bringing shame to you. I love you too much to let it continue. You deserve more than I have to offer and it's a terrible f
WATSON SPECIALTY HOSPITAL “Hello Doctor, is he up yet?” Tony asked expectantly.“Mr. Tony, the patient that was brought in is conscious and we're about to run some tests to be sure he's fine”. The doctor informed Tony and proceeded into Ethan's ward.It had been a week since Ethan got into the accident. Passers-by rushed to his aid whilst calling the emergency line so he could be given immediate medical attention.Soon enough, journalists were at the scene to report the incident live whilst the people from the emergency department were trying to stabilize Ethan before rushing him to the nearest hospital.Upon arrival at Beryl General Hospital, he received treatment and was placed in an induced coma so he could have proper rest while his body healed. The moment the doctor discharged Ethan, he ordered, "Let's go break the amazing news to Melissa and her family. I can't wait to see the look on their faces." He sounded delighted. On the way to Graham's mansion, Ethan had a taste of wealth as he saw Beryl City in a new light from the Ferrari Monza SP1 he sat in. This was the first time that he sat in a luxurious car with the likelihood of it being his.He had more appreciation for everything he saw and contemplated if this was a dream or if this would be his new life. He fantasized about vacations with Melissa and the respect he'll get from his in-laws whom he'll prove wrong for advising against his marriage with Melissa.“We're here sir,” Tony said, interrupting Ethan's fantasies. Ethan looked through the car window to see a lineup of cars that he only ever saw when the Grahams hosted events in the mansion. Puzzled and wondering what they could be celebrating, he asked Tony to find the nearest space to park as there was no way to dr
"Divorce papers?” Ethan echoed with bulging eyes while frantically trying to grab the papers that were flying around to confirm if they were divorce papers.“Yes, divorce papers with your signatures on them," Melissa yelled with hatred evident in her tone."That can't be possible. I never got divorce papers prepared, not to talk of signing them, so how are my signatures on this?" Ethan tried to defend himself while raising his eyebrows in confusion."Don't play dumb with me. You're only upset because I'm not in my room crying into a pillow like a 14-year-old." Melissa paused and started laughing maniacally."You thought you could live without my family's money and now that you've been proven wrong, you want back in and you think I'll jump right into your arms?'' Melissa tutted in disbelief.“Babe, this is a misunderstanding. I didn't sign these divorce papers. Someone must've forged my signatures on them. You've got to believe me." Ethan said, trying to hold Melissa's hands to make he
After the drama that ensued in the Graham's mansion, Ethan and Tony went to Paradise Valley, the city where Ethan's biological family resides.Upon Ethan's arrival, he gaped as this Mansion could comfortably contain 3 different buildings and there would still be space. It was 3 times bigger than what he had ever seen in his life. The drive-through had fields on each side with the grasses leveled, giving the scenery a feel of nature's touch. Ethan had some flashes of the times he spent playing with his sister, mother, and father here and noticed the gardens which still had red and white roses planted and this added color and beauty to the classy nature of the surroundings.Tony pushed the imposing mahogany doors to the mansion open, revealing Ethan's grandfather, Mr. Ben Watson, and Ethan's mother, Brianna Watson. Ethan had vague flashes revealing some memories from his childhood.Brianna rushed towards Ethan, holding his cheeks like she was holding her lost gold, "It's him. It's reall
After signing the papers, Ethan discussed with his family to keep his identity secret for now and that he had some business in Beryl City so he returned to Beryl City leaving Tony as the frontline of the business while he made the important decisions in the background.Ethan decided to visit his friend from college, Jack Greene whom he hadn't seen since he got married, with plans of catching up on everything that had been going on in both their lives.“Ethan! It's been a while, man. The last time I saw you was when you got married to that witch, Melissa. Seems you've not been able to take your share of their family money yet ”. Jack said with a chuckle as he shook hands with Ethan and led the way into his home. "You and Melissa never got along. You still haven't told me why though" Ethan chuckled as they walked into the house.Jack's house was a decent modern bungalow with 5 rooms. Jack and Ethan walked into the living room and Jack offered Ethan a seat while he went in and brought o
Ethan woke up the next day and rolled into a sitting position on his 60 by 80 inches queen-sized bed.He stared at the ceiling and for a brief moment admired the beautiful POP ceiling designs illuminated by the diamond-shaped chandelier. He got up and took a walk to the window and looked through the window pane at a vibrant city littered with middle-class working men. He stared at those on construction sites a few meters away, as they laughed, drank beer, and made use of heavy machinery. He looked down on the street and took a glance at businessmen and women running behind time and the performers by the road playing to the emotions of passers-by with the hope of getting some cents out of them.It was a beautiful city for those in power and wealth. He had never seen the city from this view before. And since his ascent up the ladder of social class, he had been too busy to enjoy this view. This was the first time since he could remember that he didn't feel like everything was against hi
