A bat appeared in the sky from somewhere. It was so big that it covered the entire moon. And that shadow was falling on Jack. Lost in a strange daze, Jack wandered off. He absentmindedly stared at the sky. The bat’s eyes were glowing like fire. It was hissing and coming closer.

"Hey, what are you staring at over there?" Max called out, raising his voice.

Jack’s trance broke at his call. He froze for a moment. "N-n... nothing. I’ll be right there," he said, then looked up at the sky again. The bat was exactly where it had been. But it was nowhere to be seen now. He quickly scanned the entire sky. Gone. Nowhere to be found.

From the other side, Max’s impatient voice was heard. "What, are you still not coming?"

Without saying anything else, and without looking in any other direction, Jack shouted toward them. Tania must have been waiting for them, as she opened the door already. She was probably sitting in the living room, waiting for them. As soon as the door was opened, they walked in.

Jack had lost himself in a strange trance. Running away was out of the question, and he had even forgotten to tell Luna. At the last moment, the trance broke. Gently tapping Luna on the head, he whispered, “Hey Luna… Luna.”Luna’s face scrunched up, and with a tone full of annoyance, she asked, “What happened?”Pointing ahead, Jack gestured towards the vampire and said, “Look over there.”Luna looked in that direction and immediately her eyes widened. She tugged at Jack’s hand and said, “Run!”Both of them sprinted towards the door, but after just a couple of steps, they were forced to stop. The vampire was standing right in front of them. Both stood in shock, unsure of what to do. Jack decided that before the vampire could attack, he would strike first. Maybe it would startle it.With that thought, he used all his strength and threw a punch at the vampire’s jaw. Jack thought that if this punch were given to a human, they’d lose consciousness in an instant. But the vampire seemed unaf

"My name is not Tania Dixon," Tania said. "My real name is Nina Cruz."Hearing this from Tania, they were stunned. They looked at each other's faces. Peter furrowed his brow. "Cruz!" He paused for a moment and asked, "Do you know Dr. Roderick?"Tania smiled in response. Everyone stared at her, raising their eyebrows. "Dr. Roderick is my father," Tania said. "I am his daughter.""Ah!" Jack’s jaw dropped. The others were just as stunned. "Then why have you been hiding your identity here?" Max asked."I'm telling you everything," Tania said, raising her hand. She cleared her throat and began, "Dolly Auntie's husband, Mr. Abraham Arnold, was a very good friend of my father. Everyone knows Mr. Arnold died in an accident. But in reality, he was killed by a vampire attack.""What are you saying?" Peter’s voice was filled with disbelief."I'm telling the truth," Tania replied. "Do you want to hear how he died?"Everyone nodded in agreement. They wanted to hear it."My father didn’t believe in

"Have you lost your mind?" Lisa exclaimed. "There’s no such thing as vampires or whatever. It's all fairy tale stuff."Dr. Johan remained indifferent. He spoke in a calm voice, "Maybe. But without vampires, you won’t find an explanation for this.""Maybe I won’t," Lisa conceded. "But that doesn’t mean we have to believe in vampires. It could be some disease that scientists haven’t discovered yet.""Hmm," Dr. Johan nodded absentmindedly. "That could be. But whether it’s a disease or a vampire, one thing is certain—it’s quite dangerous.""Dr. Johan," Tania said. Dr. Johan turned to look at her as if he hadn’t noticed her until now. "Who are you? You must be their friend, right?""Yes, I’m Tania. I’m a friend of theirs.""Anyway," Dr. Johan raised his hand. "What do you have to say?""Yes, I needed some information.""Tell me, what kind of information do you need? If I know it, I’ll definitely tell you.""Okay, how long has your hospital’s receptionist been working here?""Oh, you’re tal

The boy’s name is Axel. He lives on Harden Lane. Harden Lane isn’t far from here. It’s at most a twenty-minute drive. Peter and Max look at something on their phones and laugh. But Jack and Tania are sitting seriously."Do you suspect Cassie?" Jack suddenly asked."Mm-hmm." Tania nodded."Reason for suspicion?""Her hand was unusually cold. Something no normal person could have.""Now I understand," Jack thought. That was why Tania’s eyebrows furrowed when shaking Cassie’s hand. He asked again, "Is this the only reason you’re suspicious of her?""This reason alone is enough to be suspicious of her." Tania paused for a moment, then quickly glanced at Jack. She asked, "Do you remember what Dr. Johan said when we asked where Cassie used to live?""Why wouldn’t I remember? Of course, I do. Near Q

Looking at Tania, he asked, "Where are we heading now?""Wine Lane," Tania answered, checking her phone. "A girl named Kathy lives there.""I know Wine Lane," Peter said from the backseat. "Not too far from here, about ten miles. By the way, what did you learn from the trucker’s house? You didn’t say."As they drove, Tania and Jack filled them in on everything. I don't like staying home alone in the mornings, so I thought I'd come to bother you guys.""Oh, no, no." Jack waved his hand. "Why would you bother us? Anyway, what are you going to have?""I already had breakfast before coming," Peter said with a smile. "If I eat more, I'll get a belly.""Then Juliet won't like it, right?" Jack winked. Everyone laughed.Peter blushed. "Oh, stop it." He picked up an apple and took a bite. "So, what do you plan to do?""I'm going to kill Harry," Jack replied nonchalantly. Wouldn't it be better to call the police instead?""No police in the world would believe in vampires," Jack said. "I'm sure it's vampires that attacked Elisa and her friends. That means we have to go. There's no time to talk—everyone, get ready quickly."Max didn't say anything more. He had no choice but to agree to go with them. Tania handed each of them a wooden stake. Their calls filled the night jungle. The incessant chirping of crickets was almost deafening. An unknown bird wailed continuously in a mournful tone. Luke sat alone, chewing on jerky. He didn't enjoy sitting idly like this; it felt monotonous. He needed to do something. But then, recalling Jack's warning, he hesitated. Jack had instructed him not to move from here. But for how long could he stay like this? He was already healed. So, what was the point of just sitting around? It was better to do something. Let Jack say whatever he wants later. But what should he do?The answer came immediately. Right in front of him were several dolphin trees. They don't grow very tall—about ten feet high and as thick as a fist. The main characteristic of these trees is that they are straight and very flexible, making them ideal for crafting bows.Without wasting any time, Luke used his pocket knife to cut down a six-foot-long dolphin tree. He split it down the middle, then carved and shaped it into a functional bow. Now he needed a string. Where could he find one? Vines could be used to make a string, but they wouldn't work well for a bow. He was t

Jack had been gone for quite a while in search of water. His prolonged absence began to worry them."Could it be that Jack's in trouble?" Orin wondered."Why is he taking so long?" Lily's voice was filled with anxiety. "I hope he hasn't run into any danger.""I don't know." Orin shook his head uncertainly."How about we search the area around us?" Lily suggested."That could be done," Orin agreed. "But I think we should wait a bit longer."Lily looked at Orin inquisitively. "Why?""Imagine we go out looking for him, and he returns in the meantime. If he doesn't find us here, he'll get worried and start searching for us. It's better if we wait a little longer to see if he comes back."Orin's reasoning made sense. The strain was pressing down on their ligaments — any more running and it felt like they might snap.Suddenly, Orin came to a stop. Bending over, hands on his knees, he gasped, “I can’t go any further.” He was panting heavily. Seeing him stop, Jack and Lily halted as well, collapsing onto the ground. For a while, no one spoke. The only sound was their ragged breathing.“I can’t take another step,” Lily finally broke the silence.“Me neither,” Orin agreed. Jack stayed quiet, though his legs were just as drained. It dawned on them that they had ventured deep into the jungle. The trees here were denser, their canopies so thick that barely any sunlight reached the forest floor. The ground was damp, and everything around them felt moist. It rained here almost year-round, making the humidity sky-high. The air felt heavy, with over eighty percent humidity, making t

"Hey!" someone shouted. The monsters all turned towards the sound. Jack and Luke stood there, each holding two torches. The torches were made by wrapping cloth around the head of a metal wrench and soaking it in petrol. Jo, Orin, and Lily saw them too. A smile spread across Lily's face. Luke hurled one torch at the monsters. Flames engulfed their bodies. Luke lit another torch with his lighter. Jack handed Jo a metal rod and told him to open the door with it. Meanwhile, Luke and Jack fought to keep the monsters at bay. Jo shoved the rod into the door and twisted it hard. The door creaked open. One by one, Jo, Orin, and Lily scrambled through. Jack and Luke stayed behind, holding off the monsters."Go!" Luke shouted. "I’ll handle them.""But I won’t leave you behind," Jack protested."Don’t worry about me."
