Chapter 6
KENJI
“Gabby, didn’t know you were joining in. I would’ve made arrangements” I smiled. “Oh, you should see your face. You look so cute when you’re angry.”
“I’m gonna—”
“Kill me?” I gripped my knife a little harder. “Yeah, like I haven’t heard that a million times. Come on now, make this a little interesting. Come up with some new material. Hit me with something I haven’t seen already. Indulge me, Gabby.”
*CRASH*
I looked up and noticed that the clear afternoon sky had become riddled with thunderclouds. How did? Of course. Ittetsu was no longer wincing on the floor. Should’ve killed that pest the second I saw him.
“What’s the matter? Can’t handle a little rain?”
“I see you little protectors still have that annoying habit of avoiding one-on-one’s. Somethings never change right?”
“Only reason I didn’t kill you four years ago was because Adachi didn’t see it as a befitting end. Congratulations on making me regret that decision"
“Give it a rest, would ya. It's been four years” I adjusted my stance, now more determined.
“You still have a chance Gabby. Join me. We need someone like you. Someone with your powers, with your intelligence. Together, we will be unstoppable.”
*SWAT*
An uppercut rocked me so hard, I staggered and almost fell to the ground.
“That one packed a punch” I thought to myself, spitting out the soreness.
How’d she get so close so quickly? The little witch had some new tricks up her sleeve. I had to—
“Ryuu?”
“What?”
I turned back as fast as I could, and saw the kid running straight for me. What? He’s supposed to be—
*SWAT*
How was this punch even harder than the last?
*THUD*
This time, I collapsed and clattered down to the tarred road.
“How dare you” I heard, picking myself up and immediately baptized in amazement. “I told you, I’m not done.”
“Oi, now I’m intrigued” I let out without thinking.
The kid was still bleeding. I could tell by the way he clutched his stomach with his hands.
“Ryuu, we can handle—”
“No!” he shut the respawned Ittetsu up before he could suck all the attention.
Ripping off his shirt, he wrapped it around his stomach, tightening its grip on his skin, but not shrieking for a single second. The rain made his hair a little damp, so he packed it back and tied it into a messy bun. “I’ve got it from here.”
“Now you’ve really gotten my attention kid” I smiled at his guts. “This might just be the most pumped I’ve been for a fight in years. Now I’ve got to hit you… with my best” I set out in a burst of pace, but this time, he didn’t reciprocate the energy. Just watched as I got closer, and closer, and closer. Almost like he was calculating something. I watched his eyelids flicker the second a drop of rain fell to his nose. What was this kid so focused on that made him want to—
*SWIPE*
I didn’t see this one coming. He squatted down and swiped for my legs instinctively. Ah yes, the dumbass was trying to use the slippery roads against me. That’s why he waited for me to sprint towards him and didn’t sprint back. He was trying to outsmart me. What a fool.
I leaped off the ground and propelled a powerful kick straight for his head, when out of nowhere, he caught me.
Tsk
“Ahhhhhh!!!”
With a burst of powerful energy, he held my feet but reversed the direction of my motion, sending me plummeting back first on the wet ground.
The second the back of my head smacked against the tar, I went blank.
Was this kid actually beating me at my own game? How did he change his mode of attack so—
Huh?
I saw him fly in the air with a charged up fist ready to sink right through my face, but I managed to evade just in time and his knuckles went through the floor.
“Alright. That’s enough” I picked myself off the ground. “Now you’re just pissing me off.”
*SLINGGGG*
I flung the knife straight for his feet. It punctured through and pinned his left leg to the ground. This was an opening. This was my chance.
*DASH*
Sprinting straight for him, I charged up a demonic right of my own. But that was the moment I saw this kid pull of a move I’d never seen.
He jumped off the floor, but his left leg was still pinned by the knife. So instead of going for a normal kick, he went for a roundhouse. I heard the tweak in his leg the moment he shifted his body weight. Just so he could land a hit, he broke his feet.
*SMACKK*
It connected perfectly, and that should’ve been the end of it, but he wasn’t done there. The force of the follow-through unpinned his left leg with the knife still in it, and he went for an outrageous second. I saw his knife-pierced feet fly precariously for my face. But his first kick had already rocked me. There was no way I was dodging this one.
*SLASHH*
It gashed me across the cheek, but not before piercing through my left eye and sending streaks of blood splattering out with the drops of rain.
*CLAT*
*THUD*
We both slammed to the ground but I was worse off than the nineteen-year-old.
I thought he hadn’t conjured his dragon?
Wasn't he supposed to be weak?
How… How was he so—
I turned my head to sneak a view. Ryuu was bleeding out of his mouth.
How was he this strong?
The last Conjura.
I was expecting a lot, but not this much. At this rate, he would be stronger than—
“Ryuu, are you okay?” Gabby rushed to his side. “Oh my God, you’ve lost a lot of blood.”
My eyes trailed down to the cloth he’d used to tie his bleeding stomach, and it was soaked in blood.
“Start the car up Ittetsu, we need to get him to a hospital quickly.”
“What about Kenji?” he said, glancing at me.
Don’t tell me these bastards are gonna pity me after everything we’ve—
“Yeah? What about him?”
Gabby didn’t even turn to look at me. Didn’t even acknowledge my presence for a single second.
“Start the car!” she barked, picking Ryuu’s bloodied body up and heading for the 2019 Toyota Corolla.
They left me. They both left me in the soaking rain as I slowly bled to death, half blind.
The revving engine zoomed off, and passed my cold body.
Why was I feeling bad all a sudden? It’s not like I deserved their pity. So what if we were comrades once upon a time? I left them first, right?
My lungs collapsed and more blood trickled out my eyes.
“And I was so close too.”
The thunderstorm only grew worse. Didn’t expect any less. I was seconds from death.
“Are you sure you don’t want any help?” An unfamiliar character echoed up, and I turned my head to the side.
“Who—?”
“Character of common interest” he squatted down and looked me straight in the eye. “A little birdie told me you once shared the #3 spot of the protectors.”
Tsk. I didn’t respond.
I couldn’t give a rat’s ass about the protectors, talk less about the third spot I’d shared with my ‘sister’.
“In that case, we’ll definitely be able to help each other out” he continued.
“I want nothing to do with those people.”
“And I want to burn them to the ground” he doubled in ferocity, and it caught my eye. My good one, that is. “See, common interest.”
“W… Wh… Who are you?”
My breath was fading.
“I’m the one who’s about to save your life…” he said, more serious.
He rose his left palm and a streak of white light encircled it.
“…that is, if you’re open to striking a deal, Kenji Ohara.”
Chapter 7 KENJI The Skin-Deep technique. Of all existing powers, it was the oldest. With origins in Alchemy, the technique allowed its possessor accelerate the healing factor of its user, and whoever it was used on. It possessed so much prowess, the protectors made us believe it could even ‘resurrect’ the dead or dying if harnessed by its ‘Derecho’ user. Unlike, ‘Ethereal’ or ‘RT’, Skin-Deep was among the techniques that were not only unlearnable, but also extremely hard to control. I’d only ever seen one person harness it… Sophia Hermione, My Ex. So how exactly did this complete stranger just use S-D to heal me? “What? This your first time?” he asked. “How did… how did you just do that?” “Do what?” I got up from the ground in astonishment, scanning wounds that had suddenly… disappeared. “Who are you?” “I believe the correct expression, is thank you.” “Don’t bullshit me, you know exactly what I’m aiming at” I turned my attention to him. “How did you get Skin-Deep?” A p
Chapter 8 RYUU I could feel it The warm wind slowly whooshing around me. I could hear it The rustling figs of barley and wheat gently smacking against themselves in the steady wind. Was I bare-foot? It’s almost like the sand between my toes completed the ethereal feel of wherever I was right now. When my eyelids lifted open, I could see it too. My surrounding had this sort of western touch to it. Like the type of place a Wild Wild West Movie would be— *THWATTTTTTT* My eyelids had barely batted open when a powerful force smacked me so hard across the face, I travelled a couple meters through the freshly trimmed barely. “The hell?” “Mind waking up a little quicker? We haven’t got all day” an unfamiliar voice piped up. The blurry figure of an old-looking man appeared to be the only reasonable threat around me. Great. “Do I get no rest?” I muttered, picking myself up. “And who are you supposed to be?” No response. “Hello? Am I speaking to myse—” *POWWWWWW* “Argh” A th
Chapter 9 This would either be an incredibly stupid decision, or the smartest move I’d ever made. *SLAMM* The moment I fell, It was the latter. Well less like the moment I fell, and more like the moment I woke up. *HISSSSSS, HUFFFFFFFF* My body sprung out of the chilling ice it’d been stacked in, and fell straight into the arms of another. “You’re out now, you’re out now” her calming voice gently repeated. “Are you okay?” I couldn’t stop shivering. “Simple system, breeze burn” A sizzle travelled through my system the second I heard her whisper those words. Lifting my head, I locked eyes with her… “Gabby” I whispered. “It’s alright. You’re safe now.” “That’s not exactly true” I heard another say. “We still have to fetch the results before we can conclude anything. But I got to say, after failing twice, it’s not looking good.” “You almost killed him. Piss off you prick” she said, helping me to my feet. “Sophia? Jared? Ittetsu” I looked around the room. Ittetsu was restin
Chapter 10 GABBY FLASHBACK FIVE YEARS AGO “Oh come on, lighten up. It was a joke” Kenji said over breakfast. “What sort of messed up joke is that?” Adachi replied, audibly not having it. “Really?” he looked across the dining table and saw that none of us really enjoyed that expensive ‘joke’. “Jesus, am I the only one with a sense of humor here? You guys need to lighten up a little, huh.” “That was actually pretty dark” I remarked “Oh not you too.” “We took an oath to be the ones that protect these humans. The second you start welcoming the idea of overpowering them because you feel ‘nifty’, that’s where we’re gonna have a problem.” “Oh please, what are you gonna do about it?” he bit back at Adachi. “As a matter of fact, it wasn’t a joke” he shoved his plate away and abruptly stood up. “What now?” “Watch your words Kenji.” “No! I’m sick and tired of you telling me what to do, you overpampered prick. You’re not even the strongest, but we gotta follow all your dumb orders bec
Chapter 11 RYUU “Well, for one, Adachi himself. He never got over Asgorath. The way it looked, the way it made him feel… he never got over that” she said, almost whispering in the process. “I also feel like Asgorath drained him.” “Drained him?” “He didn’t fight like he normally would” she shook her head. “It was starting to feel like he was intentionally holding back.” “Maybe for fear that he’d trip off Asgorath once more?” “Probably. I could never really tell” she huffed. “He wouldn’t even talk to me after that. As a matter of fact, he refused to talk to anyone. I thought it’d blow off after a couple weeks but months passed, and he never once uttered a word.” Why was she avoiding my question? I asked her how Asgorath changed her. Why'd she loop back to more Adachi talk? “You didn’t speak since then?” I kept her bluff running. “Just once. A couple weeks before my suspension came in” she lifted her head off her knuckles and locked eyes with me. “We talked about you.” Hehh?
Chapter 12 RYUU “When you told me road trip, I wasn't expecting—" "Boarding a flight?" I nodded. "Well, if we were taking a cab to Princeton, I wouldn't have gotten you some clothes. Plus, I did say we needed to get as far away as possible" Gabby replied, glancing out the window for the seventeenth time this trip. “Is there something you’re looking for?” “Yeah. Just a… yes. That landmark. We're here.” "Where's here?" I was about to slump back into my seat. "Our stop." "Huh?" "We're getting down here." "W… what do you—" "Come on." She got up stretching. Am I tweaking? We're almost six miles above ground level. What'd she mean by 'come on'? “Aren't you gonna get up?" “You’re joking right?” “What, are you scared?” “Me? Noooo. Because I routinely jump off— of course I'm scared. There's nothing normal about jumping off a plane mid-air. What would the other passengers think? What would the pilot think?” “Other passengers? Pilot?” No way. I shrugged off my seat and t
Chapter 13 JORDAN The second I walked into the house, he hit me with the bullshit. “Well, did you see him?” “That’s a very good evening to you too” I slotted off my crocs and turned to head to the living room, but he was standing right in front of me. “Can I at least have a decent shower before you choke me with your inquisitiveness?” “Did you see him?” “who?” “Don’t play with me, Jordan. You know exactly who I’m referring to.” “You know, sometimes, I wonder why you can’t do some of these ‘side quests’ by yourself. Nooooo. It's gotta be Jordan this, Jordan that. And you sit at home all day, hiding behind that annoying muffling mug mask” I wearily said. “You know how important it is for—” “Yes yes, please spare me the details. My brain dissociates anytime you bore me with that time continuum speech.” I forced myself to put up a more serious demeanor now. “Yes, I saw the kid, and he’s nothing like you said he would be.” “I said it depended on varaiables—” “What did I just
Chapter 14 RYUU "Three. Based on the three threat levels, we have three types of emergencies." "Yes. Green. Blue. Red." Harumi and Hiro maintained an impressive back and forth while we sprinted towards the scenery. "Green. Minor issue. Maybe one of our mates gets missing in the forest." "Or the food supply is running short. Green Emergency calls our attention to minor issues. Blue." "Important issue. An unidentified threat found around our borders. Any activity involving extermination or intentional ignorance is usually classified under the blue level threat." "Red? Infiltration. A foreign threat within our borders." “Ryuu" Harumi called out, "...you’re falling behind. Are you trying to conserve your energy?” The hell I was! These guys were fast. Way too fast. I couldn’t count the number of people that had sprinted passed my tiring ass. I was dragging Hiro and Harumi back. “They’re all heading North of the stream. It’s probably where the commotion is coming from. I know a
